We have been loyal clients through more than 36 years and three cats. Yet today we were "fired" by the staff for being 10 minutes late (due entirely to horrid rush hour traffic on route 28) and objecting to their refusing to see our cat due to their "policy" of not allowing what they delightfully called our "tardiness". What is this, second grade? We adore the vet (Kathryn Peabody), but the staff and administration have become more and more difficult over the years. Our cat is horribly averse to carriers and drives, so it takes two of us and lots of sneakiness to capture her. The only reason we made this appointment was because she has taken to peeing outside her box and we were worried she might have a urinary tract infection. Yet they flatly and repeatedly refused to even consider checking her over quickly, although there was no one else in the waiting room and no one on either of the exam rooms. This was the last straw for us as well as them. We're out, and suggest you think three or four times before going there. read more

Wanted to switch to a local vet after we moved for our 11 year old Chihuahua mix. We booked our first appointment with them and when we contacted to confirm some other information they made us reschedule for a different time that day. He needs several anxiety meds to go which were prescribed from the previous vet, so we gave those to him per the recommendation of the vet and I brought him in his carrier to the appointment. We get there and now they say there was a schedule error and they won't be able to see him today. So I had to waste his meds which make him barely able to walk, and carry him back and forth to the vet for them to not even see him. This is the service they provide to new patients, don't waste your time. read more

We used to bring our dear Boston Terrier to this clinic, but we left after Dr Neenan left because the service and care wasn't good anymore. Dr Neenan and her staff were so loving and caring, whereas the new ownership and staff seemed to just "be there". Everything was so transactional. No signs of care for our pet. I understand this is a business, but customer loyalty is built by showing us that you also care. My Mona was treated indifferent at best, and she was the sweetest doggy ever. When I asked for Mona's records to be sent because I was switching her, they sent hundreds of pages and not a word else. I had to figure out and organize everything for the new vet. I called when I first brought my kittens home to see if they were talking new patients. I was told yes but they were scheduling 8 weeks out (fine, normal for the pandemic) so they would need to call me back in a few days to schedule (huh??). I asked if that meant they didn't actually have availability and was told they did have availability... maybe..., they needed to work out their schedule and see, and they'd call me back by the end of the week to confirm. The person answering the phone acted like this is just how scheduling works when they're busy and didn't acknowledge that it was unusual. So I had to assume it would be the norm here, and that they are just disorganized. I was disappointed since the location is convenient and reviews are generally great. They called me back 3 weeks later to say they have a new patient appointment available and asked if I wanted it. No. Definite no. I suggest you put up a notice that you're not taking new patients, rather than take this confusing approach. read more

As mentioned in my previous review I've been bringing my furbabies to WHV for years. The quality of the care they've received has always been okay and Dr. Neenan has always seemed on top of things. Until today. When leaving my bill is always paid in full. I have never carried a balance and have never had any billing issues. However, today I rushed over mid afternoon to pick up a prescription for my dog. I did not grab my wallet and only had my AmEx in my back pocket. Upon arrival I tried to pay for the script and was informed that they don't accept Amex. I completely understand this. Small businesses don't always accept Amex because of the transaction rates. However, it's how the situation was handled that I'm really appalled with. I was near tears when the receptionist told me I can't leave with the script because I know that I will not be able to come back to get his medication that the doctor claims he needed so badly for his hip. She told me I could call with a different card when I got home and come back in and pick it up. I told her that wasn't possible and went to my car crying. I then thought to myself this can't be right. We've been coming here for too many years and we've brought not only my 3 pets but two others in as well. It's impossible to have a relationship for 7 years and be told that you can't have a $67 prescription of five pills for your dog and that you can call in a Visa when you get home. I explained this to the receptionist, unhappily of course, and told her I don't understand how it's possible we've been coming here for so many years and we're being treated this way. It was my fault for bringing the wrong card. She then told me she would ask Dr. Neenan. I went back to the car and waited then came back in and was told Dr. Neenan would call me. When I arrived home I received the rudest phone call from Dr. Neenan telling me I am not allowed to berate her employees. She then told me that it cannot happen again. I told her "I don't know what you're talking about, could you please explain?"Dr. Neenan told me that her receptionist came to the back crying saying that I was upset about not being given the prescription. What upsets me with the situation is I was not asked my side of the story. I was not asked anything. I was just called and attacked and accused of something that wasn't true. I've seen that office transition through many receptionist's and now I understand why. I will be taking my business elsewhere. Your tenure and business mean nothing here in the long run. Bottom line, at the end of the day your pets health doesn't matter. You're just a number and source of cash. A vet who cares about pets, with a history like ours, would have given the script and allowed me to call from home SINCE THERE'S NEVER BEEN AN ISSUE WITH PAYING FOR SERVICE OR SCRIPTS IN THE PAST 7 YEARS. I came and saw Dr. Borofsky with my golden retriever who has been having knee/hip problems. She was very kind and went through all the options we had to get him back to normal. You could tell she cared about him and assured me through every step of the way. Kate at the front desk is also very sweet and the vet techs were all helpful too. I love Dr Neenan! I adopted two cats two years ago, and she's been their vet for the whole ride. The office is a purely joyful and kind place, and they really care for your pets. I have been able to connect for different crisis without problems, I only wish they had later hours (though I understand it's a small office). When I've had to take my cats to the emergency vet because of the lack of availability I've always known it would've been better if I had been able to take them here. For specifics; one of my cats is prone to crystals in his urine and sometimes strains to pee which is a very bad sign. To take care of him, we've needed to give him prazadon and sometimes a painkiller. He also takes prescription food c/d which seems to help. Winter hill vet has accommodated and helped make sure he's happy and healthy without delay. I highly recommend! read more

If I could not rate I would, my family pets, more members have been patients at this vet clinic for over 30yrs. My mother took her pets there, therefore I followed along with my sisters. Since Dr. O'Donnell sold the practice it has gone down hill. Today was the last straw for me. I had an appointment for my 8yr old blind border collie, Freta. It was a 9am appointment, I did not receive any confirmation call or email with any information until 8:30am this morning. During this call the person was only concerned on if I was arriving for the appointment. I said yes, at no time did the girl calling remind me of any protocol that was still in place or any form. We arrived 15min early, we waited outside and at approximately 8:53 someone came out and started to talk to me. She might have mentioned her name but I do not remember it, she mispronounced my dogs name then asked it I had a form for the appointment. I did not I was not aware of the form I told her and that I juat received a call to confirm and the girl didnt say anything about either issue. At this point I was considering not doing the appointment but Freta has been having a hard time walking and she was my main concern. (To go alittle in time, I have been waiting for a reply to an email I submitted through their website in regards to medication for her hips and legs....to date no reply) I gave in to the best for Freta and let her go in, the girl walked her to the stairs where Freta got a little jumpy and I had to assist in getting her up them, it seems to me the girl didnt know she was blind. While I waited I tried to find the form for the appointment on their website on my cell phone..i could not find it but kept looking until another person came out to touch base with me. I dont remember name. She claimed to be the doctor checking Freta and that she just tried my number and got a machine. I gave her my cell number to call me on, but I asked why we couldnt talk then her response was not only cause Freta's records were inside but so was the AC. That was rude, disrespectful to me. She didnt know if we walked there or drove, but rubbed it in that she wanted to go back into the AC. I informed the girl who took Freta I would be outside waiting and why she did not confirm the number is totally beyond me. I explained I was not happy as the email i sent did not get a response and that I was not re-informed or reminded of the protocol. We have not been there in a year nor have I checked the website..if they call to confirm they should remind people of their protocol or changes to the protocol. The doctor didnt even ask any questions about Freta she just kept pushing that I was not being cooperative but I was trying to get her to realize what her office did wrong. After about 10min of this doctor trying to belittle me she asked if I did not feel comfortable with their care maybe I should find another vet. My response was I havnt in about 3 years but my family has been coming for years and it is the neighborhood vet. She then stated she will have the records sent to me by email. She turned around and went into her AC building. 2min later the girl brought Freta out and stated they were able to get her weight and would I like to know it was..I said yes I would, she stated it handed me her leash and walked back inside. This clinic is lacking in respect and compassion for families and pets. Last year my little pup had a reaction to something and when I called for help they pushed for an email..I emailed they emailed back and referred me to a Vet hospital in Charlestown, not once did this office call or email to check on her. If it was Dr. O'Donnell, she would have. I just opened my email and they did send the records with a nasty email. Just to be clear i am not upset about the protocol, I am upset that they don't think they need to inform/remind people of their protocol, the person who took my dog didnt even know she was blind and that this doctor was more worried about being out in the heat then talking to me in person about my family member. I used to refer everyone to this clinic, it used to be friendly, caring, understanding and respectful now it is all about making money they make on the appointments. If you take your family members to this clinic, PLEASE make sure you watch them carefully, understand their billing ask the questions about their costs and ask about all types of visit protocol. They gave my dog his rabies vaccination off an expired tray. While that alone is bad, it gets worse... They did not tell me for 4 months. In fact, I only found out when I called in to make an emergency appointment because my dog was violently ill. Of course, because my dog was so sick they could not administer one then. When I talked about setting up an appointment down the road to get it re-administered, the receptionist "did not know" if there was going to be a charge. That answer is NO. I already paid for an office visit and vaccine - a bad, expired vaccine. So it will not cost me another dime. Winter Hill was able to identity which animals received vaccinations off of the expired tray, therefore they should have proactively called those owners to get their pets in there to fix it - AND at no cost. I really hope no dogs contracted rabies or experienced any problems due to Winter Hill's obvious negligence - that would be seriously disheartening. read more

Update to my previous review: I was always pretty happy with my choice of vet clinic but I have to post that I was extremely disappointed with how the staff here handled the death of my cat (about two years ago - writing this after the fact). She passed away overnight and I brought her in to the clinic right as they opened. She had already passed, so I had wrapped her up in a blanket and carried her in. Needless to say I was crying when I told the receptionist that she had died and asked her what were the next steps. The receptionist was pretty nonchalant, almost cold, when she gave me my options. I felt almost like I was inconveniencing her with my emotional state. I decided on my course of action, handed off my cat to the vet tech to take her to the back, paid for the services, and left. I wasn't offered any condolences, there was no follow-up after the fact. No note card, nothing. It was unexpected after the quality of care I had received for the several years before. read more

I should start this review off by saying that anyone who is willing to handle my cat, Skylar, automatically starts off with 3 stars, even if you suck. You see, my beautiful cat Skylar is the progeny of a promiscuous housecat who always somehow got out of the house and a feral tomcat who is the Flava Flav of the feline world. That combination didn't bode well for the litter, which ended up being five of the bitchiest female kittens you will ever meet. You can't get near any of the cats without them growling, scratching, and hissing like crazy. Skylar is over four years old now and she has tamed down a little. The only two people she lets near her are my mom and me. She will still scratch the occasional passerby, and don't you dare attempt to touch her because she will hiss bloody murder. With that being said, this is where I take Skylar for her vet appointments. You know you have a problem cat when the vet and techs need to put on the industrial-sized, mattress-padded gloves in order to handle your cat. Despite Skylar's temper tantrums, they treated her very well and were as calm as possible given my cat's temper tantrum. She actually had to be knocked out in order to receive all her shots and a proper checkup, but they were very good about it. They also spayed her and her operation went extremely well. She didn't have to wear one of those atrocious cone contraptions, her underbelly was shaved very cleanly and nicely, and all her fur grew back in two weeks. All of her shots, tests, surgery, etc., only ended up costing me about $200 and the shots are good for several years. Can't go wrong with that! I dread taking my cat anywhere with me because she REFUSES to get inside her cage, no matter what we tempt her with. Hopefully the staff will be just as friendly and calm when I bring her back in a few days to have her ear checked out because she recently scratched all her fur and partial skin off in that area :-( read more

Dr. O'Donnell runs a lovely clinic - with a calm, home-like, and comforting feel. Every staff member I have met has been sweet and affectionate to my furball and understood/remembered the past history. A great clinic for all of your general medicine needs. What I really want to mention is their involvement with local animal rescue groups. I have heard them mentioned by countless rescue groups all over the greater Boston area. The work they do for the cats of the Charles River Alleycats is heartwarming. Thanks to them, my boy Hugo received the care he so very much needed - and I have and will continue to take him there for follow up care and annual visits! I took my 2.5ish year old cat, Motoko, to Winter Hill Veterinary this morning with symptoms of an upper respiratory infection. I called at 10am and was able to get an appointment for 11:20am, which was great. The receptionist was friendly, the paperwork was straight-forward, and the waiting area was clean and relatively quiet. I almost docked a star because I did have to wait 20 minutes before the vet was available to see my kitty, but the service was so great that I gave them five stars anyway. The vet and vet technician were both very gentle with Motoko, listened to everything I had to say, and offered solid advice. I was impressed that they didn't push any products on me -- instead, they said that they had products available that might help, or that I could get the same things from a pet store or drug store if I wanted to save a few dollars. The total cost of the visit was less than I expected to pay -- the visit fee is only $45. Even with intravenous fluids for my poor dehydrated kitty and a few remedies (a tube of lysine and smelly wet food that she's more likely to eat), the bill was less than $100. read more

I went to this vet for nearly eight years, and can't say enough good things about them. They took wonderful care of my greyhound, and were always happy to discuss issues over the phone. I always appreciated the small feeling of the clinic (it's in a house), and the calm approach of the two vets. I've reluctantly switched vets, just because I needed someone closer to my house, but I would certainly recommend Winter Hill to anyone in the Somerville/Cambridge area. read more

I went to WHV Clinic because I have 2 friends who work there and recommended the place. My oldest kitty Thelma was not doing well. She had fluid in her chest that was suspected to be lymphoma. Her sister passed from the same issue in 2007. Dr. Neenan was terrific with my petite little girl. Drew the fluid out, gave me some meds and we both hoped and prayed for the best. Unfortunately the fluid came back a week later and we both agreed that it was best to put her down. All of the staff were great even though I was falling apart. They gave me time with Thelma to say goodbye. I was able to have two GREAT friends with me during the procedure which helped a lot. There's no way to make it a pleasant experience but I will say they did the best they could to explain everything and to be there with me every step of the way. Not the best way to try out a new vet for the first time but I will definitely be bringing my other fur babies there in the future. Hopefully it will be just for checkups. read more

I eventually hung up both times and will not be calling back. The first time you leave me on hold for a long time is understandable but 2 weeks later i call back and again, I'm left on hold for an extended amount of time is pushing it! My dog Miles has been treated by Dr. Neenan for 8 years. She always showed love and compassion for Miles. When he became terminally ill we asked if she wanted to have somebody else do the euthanasia. She said no that she wanted to be there for him and us. We brought Miles in and it was apparent that she was tearing up and it showed how much she loved Miles. Dr. Neenan and her staff person gently prepared Miles and us for putting Miles to rest. We received the kindest card from Dr. Neenan with the most heartfelt personal message that really reinforced what a kind, loving doctor she is. I took my cat to the Winter Hill Veterinary Clinic from 2017-2019 and would not recommend this practice. At the beginning I thought that the staff were nice enough, however after a few annual checkups, it seemed that Dr. Neenan was always eager to order expensive tests. It also seemed that they would nickel and dime every aspect of the appointment. At my last visit, even though I was charged around $85 for the annual check up, they charged an additional $25 to clip my cat's claws in addition to a host of other miscellaneous charges. This prompted me to compare receipts from the previous three year stretch and I noticed that some of their prices had increased by 66%. After a final difficult exchange with a prescription refill, I asked Dr. Neenan to call me back so that we could discuss my price observations. Not only did I not receive a call back, but received something in the mail a few days later saying that I was being terminated as a client of their clinic. The date of the letter was March 5th, the end of the first week in March when the world was falling apart due to COVID-19. Instead of returning my call back to talk about why I was upset, Dr. Neenan felt this was an appropriate response. The so-called professionals at this practice should be ashamed of their price gouging and their non-existent customer service. My advice to those looking for a local veterinarian, keep looking and check out some of the other practices in Somerville and Charlestown. I now take my cat to Huron Veterinary Hospital and find their staff much friendlier. read more

Dr. Emily Neenan is an extraordinary vet. She helped me take care of my elderly cat with CRF, multiple allergies, and a heart arrhythmia with compassion and innovation. She was totally cool with me researching and buying supplements online, and helped me balance all of his meds and supplements out to keep him comfortable to the very end. The staff are polite, compassionate, and helpful. I was never kept waiting, and could always get an emergency appointment when I needed one. My cat was always kept separate from dogs. My only beef is that they're only open 9 to 5 on weekdays, and for anything else urgent I had to go all the way to Jamaica Plain to Angell Animal Hospital's emergency room. read more

Dr. O'Donnell started caring for my dog Zelda when she was eight weeks old until she passed away at almost 11. I don't write a lot of yelp reviews, but I really wanted to express my gratitude and how wonderful Dr. Neenan and winter hill vet were to me and Zelda during the end stages of her life. Dr. Neenan went out of her way to get me medication, kept in contact with me during her vacation, and was super supportive throughout the process. Choosing to euthanize your dog is one of the most awful decisions a pet owner has to make, but I never felt judged. I will be forever grateful that they helped end Zelda's pain with a loving and nurturing environment. read more

I've been taking my inherently-owwie-prone bulldog/sharpei to Winter Hill Vet since 2010 and I've been almost consistently happy with their level of care, concern, followup, pricing, etc. Jane O'Donell who used to be the main vet there retired or moved, but she was great and loved both of our dogs - now Emily Neenan is our pups' doctor and she is absolutely terrific at what she does. The amount of personal interest on behalf of her and the other vet techs just warms my heart and lets me know our dogs are not just income for them - they always follow up, check in, and are otherwise attentive to our dogs' needs and have been very flexible with me during hard scheduling times. We just can't say enough about the excellent care our cat Toby has received now for over 12 years at WHV. Dr. Neenan has been the most incredibly caring and competent vet, who always has time to listen, explain, and demonstrate authentic care and love for Toby. The same has been our experience with the support staff and admin crew. Dr. Neenan has expertly treated Toby for a number of more serious conditions, one of which required surgery. In addition, Dr. Neenan has demonstrated flexibility and understanding on a number of levels which makes us feel respected and appreciated. The office is inviting and civilized. Appointments are strategically scheduled so that your pet is not disturbed by numerous other pets waiting. Often we were seen as scheduled on time and our cat does not need to contend with the anxiety of seeing or hearing other pets. We moved 20 miles away from Boston/Somerville almost two years ago, but could not conceive of changing vets, so continue to make the trip whenever necessary. This place did great with getting my dog in and being warm and friendly to us (even though they knew we regularly used another vet.) We had a vet with an irish accent. Like Anna, I have a problem cat. I was bringing the kitty-girls in for routine shots, and made sure to warn that Damon gets violent with strangers (Manny just gets nervous like a normal cat). No big deal, Dr. O'Donnell just had an assisting vet don the goggles and giant leather gloves, as well as wrapping my cat in a towel. No sedation - even though I said I'd be fine with it if they needed to. It was impressive to watch, and when it was over she spritzed my cat's carrier with Feliway to calm her down. It did work a little - she went from spitting to mumble-growling - improvement! And not once did the doctor even hint it was my fault that I have such a f*ed up cat. I like the homeyness of the office, all the staff was nice, I didn't have to wait too long for an appointment, and all in all the visit wasn't too traumatic on my cats. When we first got our puppy from a shelter she had worms and the homeopathic medicine the shelter gave us wasn't helping, and we were generally worried. We called Huron Animal Clinic in Somerville after reading good reviews and the next appointment they had for us was OVER a month and a half away! I wasn't entirely thrilled with the location but we called Winter Hill and they were able to fit us in 4 days later. The office is in a lovely re-done house with parking in the front which made me feel better and the office staff was nice and caring (our puppy was very shy and they made her feel at ease). We recently had a series of procedures done and again- they were very caring. They had given us an estimate when we dropped her off and it was within $5 of what we were charged at the end. By the bedtime the day of her surgery she was amazingly back to herself but they had made sure we had pain medicine and knowledge of what to look out for just in case. "Dr. Jane" as she's referred to by our cats has been taking care of our kitties for over a decade. Our first born passed away a couple of years ago at the ripe old age of 16. He had oral cancer. We asked Dr. O'Donnell to put him down after it was clear his quality of life was becoming intolerable for us and him. It was the most difficult thing we've ever done. I am kind of a big manly, man and I cried like a baby for days. It was so hard to accept that I made a choice to end the life of a little fuzzy being that I loved so much. I can't begin to tell you how important Jane became during that horrific time. She made the most tragic event in our lives bearable for both Moozer and us. I get teary just thinking about it. I think being a good clinician is a baseline and Dr. Jane goes way beyond that, she also knows how to address the human suffering that occurs when our "children" are not feeling well. Despite what the Dog Whisperer instructs, I humanize animals. I can't say enough positive things about Dr. O'Donnell and her staff. read more

I originally gave Winterhill 5 stars but after my horrible experiences I wish I could give them 0 stars. They were negligent and overdosed my puppy on pain medicine during his neuter. They did what they could to make sure he was okay but they still made me pay $500!! That was their "discount price"...Anytime I had to bring in my puppy for a last minute appointment, they make you pay over $100 just to walk in the door. I have never had to pay extra to see my vet before. I would just bring your animal to an emergency hospital. I do recommend angell animal medical center. They are also very negligent in their examinations, if they even did one ? I wouldn't know, I'm not allowed in the room but you would think they would check for dewclaws? They never told me my puppy had them (he is very very fluffy). His feet were bothering him and I was feeling around and I found he had 2 very overgrown dewclaw nails. This is something the vet should be checking for! I ended up paying $140 to be seen and get his nails fixed. Winterhill only cares about money and they are careless and negligent with animals. I would not recommend bringing your animals here and I will not be coming back. read more

Dr. O'Donnell, Dot and the rest of the staff at Winter Hill are awesome. I've been bringing my cat there now for a year and have been really happy with the family doctor experience I've had there. They seem to know my pet and really care which means a lot to me. I appreciate it when my doctor is willing to tell me that they aren't sure what's wrong with my pet, but that she's going to do everything she can to find out instead of just pushing me out the door. Also, their bedside manner is wonderful, dealing with the human reaction to our pet's difficulties can be difficult, but the whole staff does a wonderful job of addressing concerns and outlining game plans. I've been taking my kitties to Winter Hill for almost 20 years now--first the littermates I got as kittens who made it to 15 and 16 years, and now the two rescue boys from Pets in Need who've called my house home for several years. Dr. O'Donnell has been terrific in everything from routine care to advising when preventative care might be considered to calling me after the 16-year-old had to be put to sleep to help reassure me that as hard as it was I'd done the right thing. Dr. Neenan and the vet techs are so sweet and doting over my cats when I take them in. It sets not only the cats at ease, but me too! My cat Pants went from 12 lbs to 7 lbs over a few months, and Winter Hill Vet went over and above to find and fix the problem. When a more intense surgical procedure was needed, they set me up with a surgeon at the MSPCA - i didn't have to do any calling at all. They picked out the perfect doctor there and had him call me to set up an appointment. Such a nice thing to not have to deal with the logistics in an an already scary time. Dr. Neenan had Pants come back several times to check her blood, etc. and made sure Pants was doing ok. They stock a lot of food, which was great for me because I needed prescription food. They even had coupons at the front desk to save me $10 on a $60 bag of food! There is always at least one parking spot available, if not more. You can count on it! Appointments are always available within the week too. :) Go there. Go there and enjoy it, because I sure miss it. read more

We have been taking our yorkie callie there since we got her over a year and a half ago. I love it here. As new pet owners they have been very helpful in the best ways to raise our little pooch. We both work and can find it hard to make a vet trip. Winter Hill helps with flexible appointment scheduling and makes it easier to take care of your pets. When our puppy was sick and as parents we would panic, they got her in right away, took care of her, and followed up after hours to make sure she was doing better. I wish my PCP cared as much about me as our vet cares for our dog. I have reccommended to friends and will continue to do so. The Vet-Techs are loving and are helpful in making sure your dig stays calm and is comforted. read more

I have been taking my dog to see Dr Jane O'Donnell and her staff for four years and could not be more impressed with the quality of care. I love the 'small practice' feel and find everyone I have encountered to be caring and extremely knowledgeable. I am thinking of moving and one of my concerns is if I have to give up my vet!!!! read more

Great vet, much less expensive than the one I was taking my puppy to in Newton. They're very patient with her, despite her skittishness. They're very patient with me, despite my neuroses. My dog's spay surgery went off without a hitch, and the vets were very responsive to my questions about her healing process (she has very sensitive skin that seems to heal quite slowly). The office staff (or at least the woman who I've interact with) is kind and organized. With one exception, my messages to the vet have always been answered within the day. I give four stars instead of five because sometimes they're a little difficult to reach via the telephone. read more
