My dog is a patient here at Huron, she sees Dr. Evans. We've been at Huron for 6 years now and I don't picture myself going anywhere else for my pets. I appreciate the divided lounge for cats and dogs, and the friendliness of the front desk staff. You can tell that the people that work here love animals. My dog is a little nervous but they are so kind to her and give her pets and treats to make her comfortable. Also, this location is super clean. No fur balls on the floor, the reception area looks like it's cleaned daily. I also appreciate how much bigger the new clinic is compared to the old one on beacon street. read more

Hands down, indisputably, best outpatient veterinary clinic in the Boston area, particularly in this modern landscape of corporate-owned, profit-focused vets with high staff turnover and opaque pricing practices. Dr. Ulrich is excellent. I knew when he walked in to the waiting room to greet me and my dog for our first appointment that we were meeting with someone dedicated to his job - his scrubs were covered, head to toe, in white cat fur. He's kind and knowledgeable, and he has in spades what I think of as the most important quality in a healing professional: Dr. Ulrich masterfully shares his expertise in a way that allows me, as a dog owner without any veterinary training, to make informed decisions. I had been bringing my dog to nearby Somerville Veterinary Center on Highland Ave for years. Unfortunately, I noticed a major downturn in their services when they were bought by the Callanan Veterinary Group. So, I decided to switch to Huron after my partner heard good things. I have a 9yo rescue dog, who has had some considerable tartar buildup on her teeth ever since I met her 8 years ago. I have known for years that she needed dental treatment, and was dreading getting it done and trying to save up because I have heard how expensive dog dental work can be. Somerville Veterinary Center quoted me low-end $4k, high-end $6k to do a dental cleaning. Huron quoted me low-end $1.4k, high-end $1.9k. And Huron ended up charging me LESS than that low-end estimate, even though they ended up having to do four tooth extractions. I can't vouch for other dental situations... please, PLEASE PLEASE don't use those numbers to price compare or haggle with Huron... I hope to share them to outline how fair their pricing practices are and how they are trustworthy and in their profession for the right reasons. read more

Dr. Ulrich and his staff are top notch and Dr. Ulrich is amazing human being. I switched to their practice with my first dog and made sure I was able to stay in the practice after she passed. I can tell you I don't know how many stories about the great quality of care my dogs have received (along with so many other pet owners that I have referred). Through the years I've gotten to know Dr. Ulrich personally and am regularly in awe when I find out something new. My opinion is that while it is a business, it's driven by actual care and compassion. Not the care you claim to hear on commercials, but care you see in how the practice is run. As far as the care my dogs have received, i never felt it was driven by profit with unnecessary tests (my first dog had a liver issue and I was bringer her in ever 2 weeks to get them checked and he actually recommend that we hold off as nothing was changing once they stabilized) and Dr Ulrich has a great mix of eastern and western medicine. If there is a natural remedy shown to have a positive impact instead of drugs, he'll offer that first... and the thing about the eastern medicines, the practice Isn't selling you a prescription. Out of the countless stories I could tell the most important one is when I brought my dog in on a Saturday for her annual when she around 10. She was retriever mix and started getting lumpy. She had a large lump on one side and when a second one showed up that was a mirror image I wasn't concerned as Dr. Ulrich checked the first one regularly and it was fatty. She had her annual about a month or two after I noticed it, so I figure it could wait. I never really felt pressure to do anything, but when Dr. Ulrich saw the lump, he said he wanted it now. I asked him to do a fine needle aspiration first and he did, but the results just confirmed his feelings. He's usually booked out about 6 weeks for surgery, but said drop her off on Tuesday (3 days after the appointment and his next actual work day) as that is his surgery day. Needless to say, his instinct, gut, experience, concern, how ever you want to put it was dead on. After it was removed, he ASKED me if I wanted to have it biopsied as it wasn't inexpensive and I did have it done. He was right- it was cancer and I have no doubt his concern for my dog and getting her squeezed in gave me more time with her... another 4+ years... not bad for a 70lb retriever mix with a birth defect. read more

Such an amazing experience! Setting up an appointment was super breezy, they called exactly when they said they would, and found me a very convenient appointment. Dr. Evans was so knowledgeable and so utterly delightful, she made us first time dog owners feel very comfortable. I've had a great experience will all 3 vets at this office. They've taken care of my two adult cats and have been patient with my Siamese mix who is particularly feisty and difficult to examine. I especially have appreciated their compassionate care for my kitties, while still being affordable and reasonable with their fees/prices. I get the impression that they are thoughtful not to add additional tests just because and try to keep in mind the big picture. Also each time I've dropped my cats off with current COVID restrictions, the vets have called me to explain everything thoroughly over the phone and were generous with their time and did not feel rushed. My dog was coughing (because he is sick!) and the receptionist ask us to leave and go to an emergency vet clinic. Before my colleague told me about Huron, I hadn't found a vet office in Boston area that I felt was perfect for my furbaby Andrew, the mini Dachshund. First, the front desk staff are always so happy and friendly. This is so hard to find in Boston whether it's at a doctor's office or at the vet. Every time, I get a phone call from them or see them when I walk into the office, they are always willing to help and answer questions without making me feel like I am bothering them. Also, you can tell that they love animals, which is kind of a big deal for working at an animal hospital. Second, although I've only met one veterinarian here (not counting the helpers), he was very helpful. He was willing to spend the time to explain the reasoning behind why my dog needed a vaccine or an operation and when it wasn't necessary, he was honest with me, while giving me the option. He was knowledgeable and it never felt like he was judging me for not knowing something (this was a problem at the last vet we used to go to). Lastly, the products that you can get at the office are top quality. The "No-Hide" dog treats are great (you should try to avoid those white rawhide treats that you find at most pet stores) and the dog food selection here is great as well. Overall, this place is great if you have a furry companion/furbaby, but only thing to keep in mind is that the first client appointment may take weeks to book, since they only keep limited numbers of time slots to allow time for the current clients. read more

I have always had a good experience with Huron and have brought my dog there for five years, but I don't normally write reviews. However I felt now was a good time, as they just saved me from a huge amount of stress and anxiety. I board dogs in my home, and my resident dog started showing symptoms of a very contagious parasite. Despite their schedule being full for the next few weeks, they managed to fit me in and got me the test results much more quickly than I was expecting. Brought Patrick in for a follow up visit with Dr. Leaf this AM for his ear. All is good, for the most part. She is a wonderful addition to Dr. Ulrich's practice, as is Dr. Mc.Gee. However, it breaks my heart to even rate Huron Veterinary anything less than 5 Stars. Why? Because I was told by Dr. Leaf that ALL FOLLOW UP CARE and any medications would be covered, which is okay by me. The Front Office and Vet Techs are claiming that's not the case, and I left there after Patrick's Appointment without scheduling another follow up, I was that upset. I think somebody somewhere is trying to double-dip me. I hope it's not the case, because if it is, then the City of Somerville and The State WILL BE GETTING INVOLVED. read more

I'm something of a crazy cat lady. You need to be when you have a high maintenance handicapped cat. In his seven years, my cat has seen over a dozen vets of varying quality from here to Alaska. How does Dr. Ulrich rank? Well, let's just say I am 99.9% certain that he is a cat god personified. I would follow that man anywhere, although my cat may feel differently about a longer trek. Dr. Ulrich is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, compassionate, and just plain nuts about animals. Out of all my cat's former vets, only Dr. Ulrich recommended not vaccinating him in his healthy back legs in order to avoid possible injection site tumors. It was a relatively simple-sounding idea that had a lot of thought behind it. There may come a time when I'll have to make some important medical decisions on my cat's behalf, and I can't tell you how relieved I am that I'll have Dr. Ulrich to guide me. I completely trust his judgment. Given the popularity of the practice, they could charge just about anything they wanted and people would still pay. However, their prices are insanely reasonable. My cat has had two dental cleanings thus far which are typically spendy. Not at Huron! He had one in 2012 without extractions ($302) and another in 2014 with extractions ($394). And he once spent an entire day there for testing and monitoring as he was having trouble urinating ($155). I always end up spending less than I anticipated. They are also fantastic about getting your pet in quickly when an issue arises. Thankfully it's only happened a few times with my cat, but each time I called first thing in the morning and I was able to bring him in almost immediately. This is immensely important to me as one of my cat's former vets could not fit him in when he had a urine blockage, and I had to take him to an expensive emergency hospital instead. Thus concludes my review which has been over three years in the making. I would encourage anyone and everyone to switch vets immediately, but unfortunately, Huron rarely accepts new patients. But definitely keep on trying! Dr. Ulrich and the Huron team are in a category all their own, and I doubt another practice in Greater Boston could ever eclipse them. read more

Avoid this unprofessional place at all costs! I had arranged an initial appointment last Friday to establish a vet relationship for my dog. I showed up at my appointment time, after taking time off from work, to accommodate their inconveinent hours, and fought through 45 minutes of rush hour traffic only to be told that someone at the office had accidentally rescheduled my appointment to that morning, with no discussion with or notification to myself. The woman at the desk informed me that I could reschedule, or sit around and wait to see if someone else didn't show up, which is a ridiculous waste of time after I already had an appointment scheduled a month in advance. She offered no explanation as to how or why this occurred and didn't try to remediate the situation or even offer an apology for the situation that was solely the fault of their "front office" and severely inconvenienced someone who was a potential customer for many years to come. Save yourself the hassle and go somewhere organized, professional and who values their customers and the experiences they have! How they treat their customers says a ton about their lacking respect and professionalism and that attitude inevitably transfers to the treatment of your pets as well! read more

My partner and I recently rescued a cat off the streets, and I immediately brought her here as my partner's cat is a client here. The front desk people were SUPER super nice and helped with naming the cat. Dr. McEwan looked over Luna, determined her age, if she was fixed, had fleas, etc. Luna turned out to be a healthy kitten but had ear mites. He told me that he put some medication in her ears to kill off the mites and then advised me to put a flea/tick preventative called "revolution" on her to "kill off the rest of the mites." (I found his statement strange after I researched 'revolution' and found out it was a preventative.) However, despite following Dr. McEwan's instructions, Luna still has the ear mites. My partner and I took her to another clinic, and they were able to prescribe the proper medication. Also, as a first time cat owner, I asked a lot of questions. Dr. McEwan answered the questions, but he made me feel stupid for asking those questions. Unfortunately, I will not be coming back here with Luna. If I do, I'd request for a different vet instead of Dr. McEwan. read more

I couldn't be more enthusiastic about this vet. We have two dogs and have been going here for seven years. Over that time we have met with all the doctors and each one has been exceptional. They don't try to gouge us on unnecessary treatments and they have accommodated us on multiple occasions-- they even fit us in on a Friday afternoon for an emergency when they easily could have sent us to Angell or Blue Pearl (which surely would have cost us significantly more $.) The staff have always been super nice and one of them lives in our neighborhood and even recognized our dogs when we didn't even recognize her. All the vets working there are exceptional. I have been taking my cats there since 1996 and have always had an excellent experience. Over the years I have worked with Dr. Ulrich - enough good cannot be said about this down-to-earth, plain spoken vet with exceptional bedside mannert! More recently I also worked with Dr. Michael McEwan and Dr. Evans. Since it was during the pandemic, I did not get to meet either face-to-face but the information in Dr. McEwan's phone calls was thorough and detailed, helping me to make better decisions. Dr. Evans was very compassionate as I stepped through trying to treat my latest beloved cat. I ended up having to let her go, and received a lovely condolence card, signed thoughtfully by many in the office. I also had to let my 18+ year old go the previous fall and received a timely condolence card for him as well. Such a nice and meaningful touch. read more

They take no responsibility for their mistakes. I recently had an incident with the hospital which has soured me to practice and how I think they really feel about their clients. I will also say up until this point we had been happy with our experience with the vet. We recently moved and went to a new vet. Huron made a mistake (which they admit to) and did not send complete records to the new vet. Because of this mistake, my dog was double vaccinated resulting in adverse effects for my dog and costing me about $400 of unnecessary charges. When I called to express my frustrating and displeasure, Hannah offered a simple "we're sorry". I then asked if that was their official response. She then asked me what I think would be fair. I said what would be fair would be a refund on the profit they made on me during that visit and that I am fine paying for the wholesale cost of the vaccine. She said she and Dr. Ulrich are the ones that decide on refunds and they don't want to give one. She reiterated that they really care though. I then asked if they really cared then Dr. Ulrich would call me back before he left for the day. He did not call which answers that question. read more

I was worried when I had to take Ginsberg the cat to the Vet... and ended up going back to the place I got her spayed, because they had her file... the treatment was fine, but the vibe was previously sub-par. But Lo! I arrive and wait in the room, and there is this new guy (He'd taken on the clinic in NOV 2006), and I'll tell you, he comes in, smiling, and starts building rapport with Ginsberg -- petting her trying to make her comfortable, starts talking about what is wrong, and goes through all of some very potentially scary procedures, very carefully, in an extremely responsible and thorough fashion. Because its been a complicated problem, we've seen him several times, and he remembers her name, and treats her very respectfully, and with the utmost gentleness. Another thing i respect about him is that he was able to communicate where his limits were as a "general practitioner" and when it came to it, he called a specialist to see if she has any perspective... which saved me specialists' fees and Ginsberg a lot more trauma. Dr. Ullrich has been more than patient with all my questions, and very accommodating... Even at one point I was leaning on the table, and Ginsberg crawled up on my flat back and settled there instead of on the metal table... and he conducted the look-see right there... since that was where she was comfortable. His love for the animals is really apparent and he's not "just doing the job." -- I'm not out of the woods yet with Ginsberg, and I'm absolutely comfortable with and fully trust Dr. Ullrich with my pet's health and happiness. I just wanted folks to know not to get your hopes up because the first available appointment for new patients is 6 weeks from now, in September. So if your pet needs more than a checkup, its best to look elsewhere. I hope they hire more vets, its surprisingly hard to find good vets in this town! IN CASE THE CLINIC READS THIS: if you have to turn away pet owners it would instill more loyalty if you could tell the person answering the phone to recommend another clinic rather then just say "good luck" when their pet is sick. I know it doesnt seem like the best business practice, but it will build an even more loyal client base in the long run,setting you above the others and that you care, even about non-client pets. read more

I had a horrific experience here, but to be fair, it was about six years ago (and still has me feeling terrible for my poor feline). They may have a new vet there now. In any case, I had adopted my kitten at a local no-kill animal shelter and was given a voucher to get him neutered at Huron. I dropped him off in the morning, and was called later in the day to pick him up. When I got him, it was clear the poor cat had JUST been operated on, and his little deflated balls were still bleeding! He was also still completely drugged up from the anesthesia and when I raised my concerns to the staff, they waved me off and said he was fine. When I got him home 30 minutes later, the cat was literally staggering around for hours, crashing into things and falling over. Ultimately, I think it was really inappropriate for them to send an animal home that soon after an operation. They really needed to let him recover. The poor cat was totally traumatized and so was I. In related news, my cat is an asshole. read more

We have been taking our cat, Lasagna, to Huron Vet for the past two years (as soon as we adopted him)! I cannot say enough about how wonderfully compassionate, knowledgeable and caring the staff/vets are. From the vet techs, front desk associates and the vets themselves-- all are helpful, welcoming and absolutely love animals. Our cat is a male and recently experienced a urinary track obstruction-- an event which was scary, and also potentially life threatening for the cat as well. Dr. Ulrich and Dr. Leef went ABOVE and BEYOND to ensure he had the best care possible. They answered all our questions, took Lasagna in and cared for him. They continued to follow-up with us with phone calls to ensure he was doing ok, and on the road to recovery. They not only treated our cat, helping him through this illness, they supported us, the owners, and made us feel confident in all aspects of his care and well being. Please bring your pets here!! A good vet is worth their weight in gold, and with the current price of gold ($880/oz), I estimate that Dr. Ulrich is worth about 2,323,200 dollars, if one were to melt him down and sell him. Dr. Ulrich always takes the time to assuage my overprotective pet parent fears, never rushes, always explains every detail, takes the time to listen to me, and is a fair bit cheaper than other vets to boot. I love Huron so much I wish I could be a patient here. I've been taking my two cats, Penelope and Earl, to Huron as long as I've had them, and over the years they've seen Dr. Ulrich, Dr. Leef (when she was still with the practice), and most recently Dr. McEwan. All three have been caring and gentle with my cats, and patient and informative with me. The vet isn't usually a place of joy but every person who works there, from the front desk staff, to the assistants, to the doctors, has made the experience of bringing in a sick yowling cat as pleasant as can possibly be. I don't know who hates going to the vet more: me or my cat. It's usually traumatic for the both of us. Not at Huron, though. Dr. Ulrich was so kind and caring to both of us, it was almost surreal. My cat normally hates strangers, but Dr. Ulrich cuddled her and talked pretty to her straight away, got her to trust him. He was exceptionally thorough in his understanding of her lifestyle and home environment, and let that impact his diagnosis and recommendations. For the first time in the many, many years I've had cats, I felt that I could trust him and his nurses with my furry little family member. Oh, and when we got home, my cat bounced right back to her usual energetic self. None of her usual traumatized hiding or acting like her shots made her sick. I am a huge fan of the Huron Clinic. I've been taking my two cats there for probably two years now, having been referred by a friend when I was ready to tear my hair out over high prices and frustrating veterinary practices. I met Dr. Ulrich who has a straight forward way of dealing with people. He's very patient, very open, and very good with animals. Something about him just puts me AND my cats at ease. I feel like we're finally with someone that knows what he's doing and isn't just blindly guessing and requesting tests. It's refreshing. He's just hired Dr. Beale, who I met this evening, and I couldn't be happier. She compliments the clinic beautifully. My cat loved her, and her advice was well thought out. She listened to my concerns and didn't rush our time together. I could not love this place more. I was concerned when I heard he'd hired someone new, because I want to see Dr. Ulrich when I go, but now, after meeting Dr. Beale, I'm certain she'll do just as great a job. Plus, the rest of the staff is amazing. I'm bummed that every time I go in, I don't get their names, but they know every patient and they give the place it's welcoming vibe. The administrative lady is wonderful and always answers my questions and provides excellent service. She pretty much runs the store, and the clinic. She's always so happy and nice to every person and animal. I wish I knew the name of the vet tech. I bet my cat does too. He turns into a puddle of sweet goo when she stops by to say hi. She has an accent I can't place, but if you meet her, you'll love her too. She has a way with animals. Sometimes, I think seeing her is my cats only pleasure outside my house. So, in conclusion, if you're looking for a new vet, look no further. I've never had a bad experience, or paid too much money, or for anything unnecessary at all. I just have to say, this office is incredible. I have a kitty who's given me much trouble in the past couple of years, and never have I been treated with the kindness and respect that this office has shown me, from each and every person I've come into contact with. From the folks who answer the phone to the vet himself, everyone is friendly, professional, and incredibly easy to work with. Even before I was a patient, I called in distress about my mis-behaving cat, and they gave me loads of helpful information over the phone. They were understanding and empathetic to someone who was not a paying client, just a pet owner with a problem on her hands. I was miraculously able to secure a new patient appointment with Dr. Ulrich, and he too treated both me and my kitties with such understanding, patience, and concern. He made me feel listened to and understood, and didn't let me leave the office that day until I felt completely prepared to deal with my kitty issues head-on. It's also worth noting that the way he handles animals, and his clear love for them, is remarkable. He may actually be a cat whisperer. His suggestions have worked wonders, and we're now living in a much more harmonious household. Yelp for the win. We brought Beatrice- Beatriz to this clinic for her first check up with 'us' as her parents. She was checked out and complimented profusely by Dr. Ulrich. He is a really nice gentle man who clearly loves what he does. Like everyone else he fell in total love with Beatice (all 3.5 pds of her) and even appreciated her regal name. She got a rabies vaccine and an intra nasal vaccine. Clean bill of health and peace of mind $87.00. It's totally worth it. I also witnessed a woman walk in with her hurtin' puppy and he saw her right away, which I thought was the right thing for any dr. to do. It's nice to know that if we had an emergency we could pop in and receive the same treatment. When I asked him about a product (revolution drops for heart worm, intestinal parasites, ear mites and flea's) that I ordered on my own, he didn't try to persuade me to a product they carry and actually recommended it. I went to another vet in the area and just wasn't happy about it. I'm all about atmosphere and when I went into the first vet I felt like it was a place animals went to die...Then enter Huron, this place is absolutely fantastic!! The warm welcoming atmosphere was great for Angelo, he wasn't as distressed as the other place. The receptionists were friendly, quick and helpful. Dr. McEwan was awesome and very informative as well as incredibly gentle with my best friend. This place just adds to the reasons I keep falling in love with Somerville !! :) read more
