I can't believe the previous review on here. Totally not my experience at Sleepy Dog. I couldn't have had a better experience and been in a better place for treatment. My 17 year old poodle loved it and has more time to thrive with Sleepy Dog! Check out their google and facebook reviews. Not sure how anyone could have a bad experience here from the receptionist to the staff nothing but love. Bonus is the ice cream next door!

Having a long history with my last few dogs and Dr. Meade - who was amazing - I am highly…read moredisappointed with the care my dog has received since covid hit and Dr. Meade retired. Having an anxious animal makes it hard each visit - with having to give him calming meds that were prescribed by this new staff(which don't help) to getting him out of the car and into the building - and he won't go with one of them - has to be me. He has not seen a vet for a full physical in 4 years - has had his allergy shots and other shots in the car several times and even after the staff had covid last year (I know they had it as I had to change my appt because they were closed and they still were following the come out and take the animal policy they seem to have adopted). Over the past 4 years, We did have a great visit with a "fill in" vet last year when he needed an allergy shot, she went over, above, and beyond to check him out and get some overall other areas of his health covered, which was the only reason I didn't switch vets when his physical came up this years. This visit, I got an email to schedule his shots, physical, etc. I responded he needed his allergy shot also and they set the appointment. Gave him his medication to relax him the night before and day of the appt, pulled up to the parking lot - no more COVID note on the door (just lunch closed hours), I was relieved - took 10 minutes to get my dog out of the car, he is over 100 lbs and afraid of being there, get to the door and it is locked - again. Called them - they are still doing the tech to the car and then bring the pet in. Get the dog back in the car and he is now in full blown panic mode....and I am totally frustrated. Once again, this does not work for my dog, hasn't for the last 3-4 years. I expressed my concerns for the 100th time when the tech came out, asked if we could just do his rabies shot and allergy shot then as a visit isn't going to be possible with these conditions still being their mode of operation - not with his anxiety. She comes back out and says he is only scheduled for an allergy shot and can't see a vet today anyway as she is busy with a highly contagious animal. Wait, what? You sent me an email with all his things he needs and you only scheduled the allergy shot I added to the list???? And he takes medication to go to the vet - so you want me to do this again in a week or two??? She gives me some excuse about them having to clean everything because of the contagious cough and they would then let me bring him into a room to get his allergy shot. They did not care one bit that a long term client, basically told them to send the records over to a new vet that day. Just "we understand". Glad you understand....lol. They also proceeded to tell me how wonderful all of their 4 vets were (great, haven't seen one of them in 4 years....) Made an appt with Cambridge Street Animal Hospital while in the parking lot. The woman on the phone was great and very helpful, got him in for this week so he can get his rabies shot before it expires and be seen - even have an anxious pet entrance area. Happy already. It is sad to end a relationship with any business, but it was necessary.

Even they take the pet to the back for procedure. I fully trust the doctors here. However for this year's visit, the nurse(with red hair, glasses, tall and slim she was wearing a red scrub that day) who is doing the nurse initial assessment of my cat, she is just rude, impatient and not helpful at all. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET TO THIS CLINIC. My true rating is 0 stars, but Yelp doesn't allow that…read more It is the most unprofessional, poorly-run veterinary business I've ever dealt with. Last year, my older dog was suffering from (what we later found to be) an anal fistula. At Winchester Animal Clinic, Dr. Alisha Martin misdiagnosed him as having a ruptured anal gland and put him on two different rounds of antibiotic over a course of weeks. Because of the incorrect diagnosis, the antibiotic treatment did not help. I continued to try and reach Dr. Martin to understand why it wasn't healing, what it should have been looking like, etc., and the office staff continuously brushed me off and told me she "couldn't talk" or "was at a different clinic location" that day. After calling on 3 different days, I finally got a receptionist to walk over to Dr. Martin and speak with her about my concern. Instead of chatting with me over the phone, Dr. Martin cursed me out in the background ("Why the F*** does she keep calling? Does she have the f***ng cone on him? Is she giving him the pills? What the F*** does she want me to say?"), unaware that the receiver of the phone was uncovered and I could hear everything. When I confronted the receptionist about it, she apologized that I heard it, and then said "Dr. Martin had a stressful surgery to perform this morning." Could you imagine your primary care or ped doctor behaving in this way? Could you imagine getting cursed out for wanting to talk to the doctor? I asked to speak to the office manager. Hours later, the "manager" called me back and apologized - then offered me a "discounted re-exam." I told her there's no way I'd let Dr. Martin near my dog ever again. Dr. Alisha Martin NEVER called me back to apologize for her rude, unprofessional behavior...or to even inquire about my dog's condition. She simply did not care, which is not indicative of a good doctor. All along, my dog suffered with a painful anal fistula which then required an ER visit to Mass Vet Referral Hospital. There, we dealt with an intelligent, communicative, and helpful vet named Dr. Victor Caudal, who correctly diagnosed and treated my dog's anal fistula. For primary care purposes afterward, we switched to Bulger Veterinary Hospital and Dr. Libby Holman. Again, a vet who wants to help your pet in a kind and compassionate way - and willing to SPEAK TO THE CLIENT to plan and share details. I highly recommend these two vets. They are worth the extra drive if your dog has serious health problems. And, to be honest, they are light years above and beyond the horrific business that is Winchester Animal Clinic.

When I called later, I was told the only available appointment was 6 weeks from the date of the last visit and that it had to be an appointment with the vet. I asked if they were sure it had to be a vet appointment and couldn't just be a tech visit and they insisted it had to be a vet visit. When I arrived for the appointment, the representative at the clinic told me 6 weeks was too late for a booster and that I would need to pay for both a new vaccine and a new booster. I explained to them that I had not been offered an appointment in office and was only offered an appointment 6 weeks out when I called later. They refused to give any further explanation. They state it was there policy and would not escalate me to any one else. They would not look up the name of the person I spoke to on the phone. They would not tell me the last name of the manager. The in office manager in the office was dismissive and walked out of the room, leaving the person at the front desk to "handle" me. They also did not weigh my dog at my first visit because they said the scale was broken. They would not weigh her 6 weeks later because it is apparently still broken.

I unfortunately had to do a little tour of veterinary clinics the past few days, as my sweet cat Babs had a bit of a medical mystery that is now *hopefully* resolved. I'll spare the details, but I ended up at PetMedic this week in the late afternoon. First, amazingly, they have 3 reserved parking spots behind the building which were all available when I arrived. There is also ample metered parking available in the neighborhood. I had called ahead, and so the receptionist greeted us by name (well, the cat's name!) and immediately took him back to see the doctor (it was an emergency situation). They brought me into an exam room to wait, and as I was having a minor meltdown, offered me a hug, brought me tissues, and offered water, tea, "whatever I needed"-- which was very sweet. The doctor (Dr. McCoy) popped in quickly, introduced herself, and double checked that it was ok to give Babs a sedative and some oxygen which was needed immediately before doing additional diagnostics. I agreed, she left, and shortly thereafter a tech came in to get some background. I had a small wait, and then got a text with a proposed plan and high and low cost estimate. As soon as the text came through Dr. McCoy came back in and walked me through it all, why it was necessary, and talked through the cost. Was it cheap? No, it was emergency vet services. (If you don't have pet insurance you are honestly either a billionaire or insane. We get 90% reimbursed!) But I think given allll the stuff they had to do, it felt pretty reasonable. I got clear discharge instructions and so much compassion from everyone I spoke with. It turned out their dx was likely not correct, but they treated his symptoms appropriately and my vet a few days later said that their dx did make sense given what he was presenting at the time. Since we had a very negative experience at Blue Pearl Charlestown last year (the closest one to our house), we are THRILLED that there is such a caring and efficient urgent care facility within a short drive and with parking. Though, respectfully, I hope I never have to see them again

I didn't mind having to drive out from Boston and I felt confident in the practice he had built. I admit I was disappointed on one occasion maybe 2 years ago with the service a couple of years ago (I felt rushed) but I gave my feedback and things immediately improved thereafter. I think it was bumpy as everyone adjusted to the practice being bought out by private equity. That's really difficult for the staff and doctors because they want to provide care but the entity wants to funnel animals through to make big bucks. Anyway, I put my dog down a few days ago at Thrive. The technicians on staff the morning of 2/13 and Dr. Shinohara were incredibly compassionate and made me feel so supported in what was a very difficult decision. As it is for all pet owners who have to say their inevitable goodbyes, the experience of letting him go is something that will always stay with me. I am grateful to Dr. Shinohara and her team for being so intentional and caring Friday morning. It was peaceful and I wouldn't have wanted it to unfold any other way than it did.
