I called Central Animal Hospital and they said they can treat my cat. Dr Grambow took his time explaining diabetes and the treatment options and answered all of my questions with patience and respect. So far the follow-ups have been good here as well.

We wanted to…read moretry a new vet since the vet we used in the past couldn't determine what was wrong with my dog in 4 months, but the ER diagnosed cancer in 10 mins. I looked at reviews and Central was less than a mile from our house and got very good reviews. I called and spoke with Tim, who was super nice and informed me that the first exam would be complimentary but any lab work/vaccines would not be - totally fair and understandable. We go for our appt the following week, and my dog received 2 vaccines and a blood panel and heartworm test and it was $380! If that had included an exam charge, I would think it was bad enough, but it did not as we were new clients. At that point I realized the same services plus an exam charge next year would probably be $500 +\-, which seemed very steep to me based on past experience at other vets and the pet ER in Woburn. We needed to go back after 3 weeks for booster shots, and had no further questions/concerns. A tech came into the room to ask if the dog was doing ok since the last appt and my husband said he was fine. It was an interaction that lasted seconds, and we were billed a $46 vet tech fee for it. The two appts consisting of 2 vaccines with boosters, an exam and blood panel and heartworm test came to $570, which seems very steep to us. I have called and provided my feedback on this vet tech charge and was told it was charged to account for the tech's time. I get that, but for brief interactions such as ours it should be broken down further. We all know inflation is affecting the cost of everything, but given how hard we work for our money, a $46 charge for a simple question we didn't even need asked is taking advantage of people in my opinion. In addition, getting lab results was frustrating. The vet was on vacation and I was told only she could get the results, which didn't seem right. We will be going elsewhere in the future. I only wrote this review for others who may be on a budget like myself. I've spoken with the office manager already and she knows how we feel about this. If you get great care there and don't mind the prices, that's your business, but I think people should be warned that a follow-up booster shot will include a $46 fee to ask if the dog's been ok over the past three weeks.

I'm trying to find the right words to adequately praise Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital…read more(MVRH), its staff, and Dr. Kelly Larabee, an Emergency Physician whose compassion and professionalism made an extraordinarily difficult day more bearable. While traveling from northern New Hampshire to Boston, we stopped in Woburn and discovered that one of our very elderly dogs could no longer get out of the car on her own. When she finally did, her rear legs collapsed beneath her. In addition to the weakness in her hind legs, she was breathing rapidly and drooling excessively. As a longtime dog owner, I recognized the look in her eyes immediately--the look that says, "It's time." Fortunately, we were less than a mile from Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital, a Level 1, 24-hour emergency and specialty veterinary hospital. We arrived without an appointment and were met by a team that was immediately welcoming, compassionate, and remarkably efficient. It was clear from the moment we walked through the door that MVRH has built a system of care designed to deliver expert treatment with both urgency and empathy. Our dog was promptly brought into the treatment area and made comfortable. Shortly thereafter, we met Dr. Kelly Larabee, whose kindness, professionalism, and genuine concern were evident from our first conversation. Dr. Larabee confirmed what we had feared but already suspected--that the time had come for our beloved companion to cross the rainbow bridge peacefully. Dr. Larabee and her team brought an extraordinary degree of humanity to veterinary emergency medicine. They treated our dog with dignity, tenderness, and respect, as though she were a member of their own family. During one of the most difficult moments a pet owner can experience, they provided not only exceptional medical care but also comfort and compassion for us. I am not sure the average pet owner--or member of the public--fully appreciates the expertise, systems of care, and operational excellence that make an institution like Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital function so effectively. Having spent much of my career in process engineering, I was deeply impressed by both the efficiency of their operations and the quality of care they delivered. Every aspect of our experience reflected a well-designed system staffed by highly skilled professionals who never lost sight of the human and emotional side of their work. Dr. Larabee and the entire MVRH team were as compassionate as they were capable, and as caring as they were efficient. Their professionalism and humanity turned a heartbreaking day into one marked by dignity, peace, and gratitude. We would all be fortunate to receive the same standard of care in human medicine.

I booked an appointment online with them on a Saturday for the following Wednesday. I also received a confirmation of this visit. When I arrived first thing in the morning, I was told by the (Very nice and sweet) vet tech that the doctor wasn't in this week. I was shocked considering they had several days to call, text, email, or send a carrier pigeon and let me know that I wouldn't be able to be seen. Additionally, from reading other review online, it sounds like this vet needs to retire or hire another person to help him run the business if he's planning on being out of town so often. He also sounds like he is lacking in bedside manner and doesn't take the time to actually get to know your pet or their illness. There are about 3 other vets within a 3 mile radius of this place, choose one of those.

The problem is Dr Jawitz is the only vet and only works until "lunch time" and also frequently travels for a week at a time. So it's very likely you will need a vet and your vet won't be working. My cat was just diagnosed with diabetes and on the call when Dr Jawitz told me the diagnosis he told me he doesn't treat chronic conditions because he's not in the office enough and recommended I take my cat to the veterinary hospital for treatment. So basically as long as your pets are easy to treat Dr Jawitz is great but when you really need a vet for a sick pet he'll tell you to go to the hospital. Thankfully I found another vet in Stoneham that was happy to treat my cat's chronic condition.

The only reason they did not get a 5th star is because of Barstow the groomer. He is not a people person nor an animal person. I find him a bit arrogant. My little rescue loved going to the vet until he starting cutting her nails (and the QUICK every time). My dog now shakes like a leaf, he has to drag her in or Ashley or someone she loves takes her and again he made her bleed. I now have the vet do it and it's perfect and she goes willingly and happy. And as I read all these wonderful comments, the consistent negative is him unfortunately.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET TO THIS CLINIC. My true rating is 0 stars, but Yelp doesn't allow that…read more It is the most unprofessional, poorly-run veterinary business I've ever dealt with. Last year, my older dog was suffering from (what we later found to be) an anal fistula. At Winchester Animal Clinic, Dr. Alisha Martin misdiagnosed him as having a ruptured anal gland and put him on two different rounds of antibiotic over a course of weeks. Because of the incorrect diagnosis, the antibiotic treatment did not help. I continued to try and reach Dr. Martin to understand why it wasn't healing, what it should have been looking like, etc., and the office staff continuously brushed me off and told me she "couldn't talk" or "was at a different clinic location" that day. After calling on 3 different days, I finally got a receptionist to walk over to Dr. Martin and speak with her about my concern. Instead of chatting with me over the phone, Dr. Martin cursed me out in the background ("Why the F*** does she keep calling? Does she have the f***ng cone on him? Is she giving him the pills? What the F*** does she want me to say?"), unaware that the receiver of the phone was uncovered and I could hear everything. When I confronted the receptionist about it, she apologized that I heard it, and then said "Dr. Martin had a stressful surgery to perform this morning." Could you imagine your primary care or ped doctor behaving in this way? Could you imagine getting cursed out for wanting to talk to the doctor? I asked to speak to the office manager. Hours later, the "manager" called me back and apologized - then offered me a "discounted re-exam." I told her there's no way I'd let Dr. Martin near my dog ever again. Dr. Alisha Martin NEVER called me back to apologize for her rude, unprofessional behavior...or to even inquire about my dog's condition. She simply did not care, which is not indicative of a good doctor. All along, my dog suffered with a painful anal fistula which then required an ER visit to Mass Vet Referral Hospital. There, we dealt with an intelligent, communicative, and helpful vet named Dr. Victor Caudal, who correctly diagnosed and treated my dog's anal fistula. For primary care purposes afterward, we switched to Bulger Veterinary Hospital and Dr. Libby Holman. Again, a vet who wants to help your pet in a kind and compassionate way - and willing to SPEAK TO THE CLIENT to plan and share details. I highly recommend these two vets. They are worth the extra drive if your dog has serious health problems. And, to be honest, they are light years above and beyond the horrific business that is Winchester Animal Clinic.

Banfield Pet Hospital

Banfield Pet Hospital

I am beyond disappointed with Banfield Pet Hospital and especially the management at this location…read more I booked an appointment TWO DAYS in advance for my dog, who is limping and clearly in pain. The appointment was scheduled for 5:30 PM. Then, the MORNING OF THE APPOINTMENT, I get a call saying they suddenly need to reschedule due to a "conflict." This has happened repeatedly with this location -- almost every later-day appointment I've booked somehow ends up needing to be moved. At this point, it feels less like bad luck and more like they simply don't want to honor late appointments. When I politely pointed out that this keeps happening, I was given a vague "system error" excuse. Then I was told they "wouldn't be able to do X-rays that late." As someone familiar with animal handling and basic veterinary procedures, I asked whether they were assuming sedation would be needed, because for a dog of this size and the location of the injury, sedation would likely be unnecessary and the positioning for the X-ray would be very straightforward. Instead of having a professional conversation, the manager became defensive and accused ME of being rude. He then lectured me about staffing shortages and implied I should have just taken time off work. That response was unbelievably inappropriate and dismissive. Pet owners schedule appointments in advance specifically because many of us work full-time jobs and rely on the appointment time we were given. I understand staffing issues happen. What I do NOT understand is repeatedly canceling or moving appointments last minute and then treating concerned pet owners with disrespect when they question it. The most concerning part is that this behavior came from the manager himself. If this is how management handles clients, it explains a lot about the ongoing issues at this location. I will be escalating this to corporate because this was unacceptable customer service and, more importantly, poor care coordination for an animal in pain.

The moment I ask, "Do you want to go to school?" my dog is up and ready, heading straight for the door. It's such a joy to see her excitement as we drive down the street - she knows exactly where we're going and I can't contain her enthusiasm, bouncing from window to window. When we finally pull up, I have to brace myself because she drags me to the front door, eager to get inside. It's adorable how her whole-body wiggles like an "S" when she's excited - it never fails to make me laugh. Under the new ownership, which has been in place since 2023, Pet Companions Bed and Biscuit has only improved. The facility looks better than ever, with separate rooms for chilling out, enjoying treats, solving puzzles, and even taking nature walks with the staff. And that's just the tip of the iceberg! There's so much more for the dogs to do besides playing with their friends. They even offer grooming and cageless boarding. This place is truly amazing, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
