It was a busy morning after homecoming weekend, but we only waited about 10-15 minutes for our group of five, which wasn't bad. I tried the hot PB Cup of Joe, and it was just okay. It was missing some extra PB, chocolate, or sweetness, and it got really milky toward the end. My friends had the hot Pistachio, and I kind of wish I'd ordered that instead. Soma is a Bloomington staple that is quickly disappointing locals by continuing to raise prices. I've been a loyal costumer for 3 years now and my drink has gone up at least $1.50 in price. Used to be $5 now it is $6.42 for a medium mid tier coffee. Kinda ridiculous. Service is always great but I just wish they would stoppppp raising the prices every 6 months. My second Soma in two days and this one was just as good today as yesterdays. A perfect cortado (followed by a cup of drip) and I stayed here for a good few hours until my work day ended. Soma has everything you could want in a coffee shop. The vibes are immaculate with fun decor and music that all can enjoy (I would describe as chill/indie rock). The baristas are super helpful and kind. The service was fast and the drinks were made with care. They have a rotating specials board with seasonal items and plenty of pastries to choose from. We had a dirty chai and their cold brew, both tasted perfect. There are three seating areas - one outdoors (with and without umbrellas), inside the main entrance, and a back room. No music is playing in the back room, making it a great place to study or read. Depending on the time you go, seating can be limited or you will have to sit next to someone you don't know yet. I came into Soma coffeehouse to get me a smoothie and a brownie and she tells me that the brownie was only a day old. But a day old brownie I've had here before, but this one was so dried out it crumbled as I bit into it very disappointing so now I'm wasting my money on that cause I have to throw it in the trash also ordered a smoothie and definitely scared to drink this smoothie because if she can lie so easy about the food that she serves on how old it really is, she probably serving bad drinks too. They can get a sick if the dairy is bad and old as well, so I just gave them the smoothie back and lost my money that I spent, and I gave them a tip on top of it for no reason, but I gave them a tip before I even got the food without knowing if the food was gonna be even good, so apparently I should not have given them a tip either She didn't even seem to care about my concerns that I had her name was BARISTAK unbelievable that I got this terrible service today so disappointed. read more

I've been here so many times and I've never had a complaint. Each time I've had something different. I think I've settled on a hot Lewinski as my drink of choice. I've gone here twice and each time I ended up being disappointed. The first time I got a pineapple smoothie and a sandwich. The smoothie was okay but the sandwich was pretty bad, the bread was really soggy and I had to throw away the bottom slice. The second time I got the farmer boy Tim smoothie and it was pretty good. Unfortunately, I also decided to buy some muffins for a snack. I was especially deceived by the cheesecake muffin because I thought it would have the cheesecake core all the way through, but it was actually a thin little layer of cheesecake plastered on top of the dryest most flavorless muffin I've had in my life. The service and the environment is actually really great. So for that I give 2 stars. I haven't had their coffee so I can't speak on that, for all I know it could be great, which probably matters more than dry muffins considering its a coffee shop and not a bakery. read more

the downtown soma is literally falling apart. the tiles on the floor are lifting up so bad I see people trip on them all the time. the wall in the back room is caving in on itself. one time i tried to use the microwave but the stand it was on was so rickety, it almost fell off. it has that cute college town coffee shop vibe and the people who work there are always chill. food and coffee is always good. but the level of grime in that place completely takes away its charm. if they just fixed the walls, wallpaper, tiles, and gave it a deep deep scrub, it would exponentially improve the quality of the place. read more

Although it is not provided here, their Oregon Chai concentrate isn't half bad. The Bee Sting (honey and habeñero latte) brings a sweet bite to the palette. If your tall (6'+), watch your head. The Peppermint Patty latte is minty delicious and a perfect pick-me-up for a crisp fall morning. My visit to the cafe was short, but the interior was cozy with different types of seating and lots of games and books on a bookshelf. I told my brother he should come with his friends. Another wonderful experience at Soma, with friendly baristas and excellent coffee. With the current heat wave, my husband and I sprung for two iced coffees. The ICED VIETNAMESE COFFEE was absolutely amazing. Whether you are in the mood for it hot or iced it's a sure bet. I had the ICED HONEY HABANERO LATTE, which was a delicious and interesting mix of cool and spicy. It was great for a hot summer day. Seriously, stop in here and investigate the menu. I've been coming to this establishment for about 1-2 years. The coffee is always amazing and the service is also great (most of the time). My most recent visit was a little different as the air conditioner seemed to be off and it felt like 90 degrees in there. The coffee was good as always but I felt extremely uncomfortable waiting for my drink as I was swamped with sweat. I also noticed the baristas were also sweating a lot and while I do appreciate their hard work, I don't want sweat in my drink. Soma is a quirky little coffee place, but overall underwhelming. I ordered the Swamp Thing and was pretty excited to try, but the drink left me wanting more. Nothing really jumped out at me in terms of flavor, and the iced drink was too warm for me. I guess they aptly named it however as it was muddled and warm. I will give the place props on the cool aquarium they have and the info they posted on their fish, and the place was pretty busy on a Saturday with people studying and hanging out. Soma is the epitome of nostalgia for me and a must-visit when in Bloomington...so many hours spent during undergrad in the brightly-colored, oddly-decorated basement, sipping on a murky-green Swamp Thing or rhubarb-tinged Farmboy Tim smoothie. Since revisiting Soma, I've noticed some positive changes that could influence those who previously described Soma as "dirty" or "messy": - The beat-up floor in the main entrance and coffee shop area has been replaced with nice, easy-to-clean hardwood-looking tile. -The walls have been repainted and a lot of the bric-a-brac has been removed. This could be considered a plus or minus, depending on your leanings...but no worries, TV aquarium has made the cut! - The pastries, cards, and other areas have been more efficiently organized, lay-out wise. - The menu board is larger and easier to read. I've always experienced friendly service at Soma, so am wary of fellow reviewers who have experienced worse or use the dreaded cliché "hipster" moniker. The drinks and flavor options are stellar, with the aforementioned Swamp Thing (espresso, soy & mint over ice) always my first pick. The smoothies are entirely fruit-based, with no added sugar, syrups, or dairy; I highly recommend the Farmboy Tim (rhubarb, peach, melon, & blueberry) or TD's Peachy (peach & raspberry). You can also continue to easily explore Soma's neighbors, connected via staircase or open door; I recommend checking out TD's CDs & LPs, as you sip on your "hipster"-crafted latte. read more

Soma is the place to be if you're looking for quality coffee, espresso, tea, and baked goods. Soma is one of the coziest coffee shops in Bloomington. Slightly sub-terranian with plenty of light and warm yellow lights from a host of lamps, Soma is a welcome stop on a chilly day in Bloomington. There's free wifi and plenty of seating in the front room or in the back room extension, and good music everywhere (there's even a record store attached to the back room!) The coffee here is good enough to drink without a hint of cream or sugar (or soy milk and simple syrup, if that's more your thing). Normally they have three caffeinated blends and one decaf out on the bar, with one blend being from a special monthly roaster. The espresso drinks are just great too. A variety of choices from the traditional (cappuccino, latte, americano) to more exciting choices (try the Swamp Thing--espresso + soy milk + mint). And the smoothies/juices are incredibly refreshing if you're here on a hot day. They can be customized to your hearts desire. Baked goods here never disappoint either. They've got vegan stuff, savory things, goods from the local Italian bakery Piccoli Dolci, bagels, you name it. I've been stopping by Soma off and on for 10 years and it the more post-college I get, the more weird nostalgia I have about strange little places like this. The tv fish tank. The mannequin legs in the bathroom. Something about basement establishments always adds to the mood. Oh, and they have great drinks too. Soma is a Bloomington place, 100% They are a coffee house AND a juice bar with some serious personality. Take time to skip Starbucks and check out this local business. Everything you are getting here is local and delicious (not frozen and shipped). Now, I go to the bux, but when I am at work on Kirkwood Ave, I choose Soma for my caffeine boost or a little treat. This location is in a basement and not shiny or fancy, but eclectic and full of personality and art with a nice patio on Grant street. This location is a little more hipster feeling than the others that have opened around campus the last few years. When I moved to Bloomington for college, this was the only location and I quickly loved it. I love this place because the have the most delicious juices and smoothies - Berry Berry Good is awesome, but they have a lot more adventurous options as well. The smoothies and juices are made fresh. Vegan treats and the cosmic muffin is YUMMO! My favorite coffee drinks are the Razz-Ma-Tazz (chocolate and raspberry) and Peppermint Patty. This summer they also had a nitro coffee that was worth the trip to any location. Ice tea is my go to in the summer. They have a great loose tea selection and always have 2-3 iced and ready to go. Last visit was ginger peach and jasmine mint. Keep Bloomington Weird, play with the magnets on the espresso machine and if you need lunch, walk up the staircase to Laughing Planet for a burrito. read more

On this particular visit, I was treated very well, as one of the burristas actually walked my drink to me. They also let me eat my kabab from street truck.
