Then there are the ones that have truly made their lasting impact in the town of Nashville. This coffee shop is one of the most interesting and comfortable places to enjoy a cup of absolutely amazing beverages. A huge cookie or any other special treat that you may wish to try. Every time me and my wife have to go to Nashville we go there. I will admit that I am not much of a coffee drinker I enjoy a good tea. There's a lot going on here. Common Grounds is tucked off the main road down a little alley, but the signage is there to make it easy to find. When you enter, it's not exactly straightforward. The place looks like hippies became mild hoarders and I don't think I'm far off. There are books and games and eclectic seating throughout. It is larger than it first appears and it is full of books and... Stuff. I don't know if any of it's for sale or if it is just there to be perused. The bar is straight ahead and the menu is broad enough to please but not overwhelming. There are some pastries and scones ready to go. The coffee is very good! This is an amazing place in Downtown Nashville. We stopped here twice during our camping weekend. There were locals there both times sitting and talking, which made it seem very homey. You could stay here for hours and not see everything that is in this coffee shop/thrift store. The first day I had a lavender latte and the second I got the chocolate cherry latte. Usually when I get things from coffee shops that have chocolate syrup and multiple syrups, they are very very sweet and hard to drink. The chocolate cherry latte came with dark chocolate syrup, almond syrup, and cherry syrup and it was *perfectly* sweetened. Not too sweet, but still had great flavor. The employees were very kind both times, answering our questions about the town and making sure our experience was great. They had food options but we did not order food either time because we were just there for coffee. There was plenty of seating inside, plenty of things to look at while you wait for your drinks, and it is in a nice little side street that isn't too busy. I would give less than 1 star if I could. This place is straight up creepy. Unbearably cluttered, crowded with flea market trash, and dusty like Granny Weatherall's wedding dress, the immediate vibe upon entering is mental illness. After you've received your deeply mediocre coffee drink, try asking to use the restroom. Granny Weatherall will lure you back to the trash-lined building's catacombs, only to stop you from entering the door and demanding to see your hands. She wants to squirt some "sanitizer" on them **before** entering (...!) as if you're kindergartner. After refusing such, I could only wonder id she was continuing such personal and invasive care in the bathroom Do yourself a favor and save the creeps for Halloween haunted houses. read more

If you like your coffee houses a little off the beaten path, then this place is for you. Although it has a Van Buren Street address, the entrance is actually in the alley that is next to the Big Woods Pizza place. After finding street parking on the neighboring block to the west, I wandered over here and entered the eclectic shop. As you enter the order counter is straight ahead and to the right. There are multiple rooms with a variety of items including books, board games, wall murals, baskets and vases. I don't think they are for sale, just decor. I ordered my standard black drip coffee and a tasty looking banana nut muffin. The coffee was good and immediately drinkable! (My one absolute requirement from a coffee shop is to serve it at a proper temperature.) The muffin was wrapped to maintain freshness and it was surprisingly moist and yummy. Just enough banana and nuts to stand up to the coffee. The service at the counter was friendly and when I was finished, I asked where to put my dishes and she directed me to bring it back to the counter. This isn't a high tech place to do your computer work (at least nobody seemed to be doing that here.) But it is a quiet and inviting place with a lot to keep you occupied if you wish to. I bumped into this coffee shop while walking through Nashville and I'm go glad I did! I really needed some coffee so we ducked down the alley off of the main road to this coffee shop. This place is definitely unique - quirky is the perfect word to explain it. The shop is a cross between a coffee shop, book store, thrift shop and game room. There are puzzles, books and games to utilize while you are there which is awesome. It reminded me of the game cafes that I used to go to in South Korea. The walls are super decorated in eclectic styles. Everywhere you look is interesting! The owner was the one there when I visited and she made our drinks. I got a vanilla latte and I thought it was made well. They had whole milk and skim milk as the milk options. Service was a little slow, but worth it. Best coffee place in town. Iris is the sweetest, most down-to-earth lady. I recommend the delicious variety of lattes and Italian sodas if you aren't a coffee drinker(the roasted marshmallow and granny apple are orgasmic to the mouth.) They offer a diverse selection of non-dairy which is important to me. The interior is a relaxed but busy atmosphere with plenty of books, antiques, tables, games and toy bin. They have areas of privacy and are never overly-busy. This is always my morning meet location to catch up with old friends. Support small business and tip your baristas. They are more than deserving. My only complaint, they are a bit slower to make drinks so if you have the time then you should try them. read more

Great place to get a coffee in Nashville, there are two great places and this is probably the less frequented one. My double short americano was perfect and hot, served with a smile and a thank you, and not expensive. If you look around here you will also see a lot of kitch so look around. Eclectic coffeehouse and craft shop in a unique, historical art colony. Books, art, crafts, board games, even a Wurlitzer upright piano all somehow blend together in this alleyway coffee shop run by one of the most incredible women in town. Chocolate Stout and Apple Cider were great. The smiles and laughs were even better. Plenty of seating, plenty to do. My wife and I stayed here for three hours on a chilly Tuesday afternoon. I just happened to be walking one early morning in Nashville looking for a coffee. Found this place I was unsure when I walked in with all the items in the store. But I walked in and was greeted my customers and the staff. Which made me feel welcome. The scone and my coffee was delicious. They have a variety of seating and cafe tables, so you're sure to find a seat that's comfy for you. This is the perfect place to relax for a few minutes while shopping or to bring a book and spend a few hours. They also have tasty quiches and baked goods. Plus, the staff is friendly and cheerful. Iris, the owner, is such a ray of pure sunshine. They make each beverage to order with extra TLC, so don't expect the lightning fast service of McD's or Starbucks, but the result is 50,000 times better. It is worth the wait! A cross between your BFF's livingroom & your Grandma's dinning room with tons of overstuffed bookshelves and magizine racks make this the perfect place to hide from the weather, if your find yourself in Nashville during a downpour or snow squall. It's alright. I felt out of place when I walked in. I came in early, before anything was open and a table full of locals looked at me like I didn't belong. The lady barista was nowhere to be found. A guy from that table had to get up and go grab her from the back. She was nice when she finally made it to the counter, and the coffee was alright. I just had a brewed coffee so I don't have anything to say about any of their espresso or a variety of "fru-fru" drinks. The condiment bar only had half and half, and I take skim. By the time I turned around to ask if she had skim behind the counter, she was gone again. It's kind of hard to tell where to order from also, very cluttered countertop and no clear area of where to go. I visited Common Grounds over a year ago, possibly 2, and it was in a different location. I had a much better experience then and is why I searched it out again. Not again, though. read more

Quite possibly the worst coffee drink I've ever had. I ordered an americano and it was the weakest coffee I've ever had. An americano is espresso with hot water, I think I got coffee with hot water. There was no way she pulled a shot of espresso that quick. I was already a few miles down the road before I took the first sip. 1 star for the cute barista. read more

The first step in the door is confusing, is it a bookstore? An antique shop? A thrift shop? A coffeehouse? Maybe it's a diner? Thing is, it's all of those. So yup, walking in the door, you'll feel a bit lost. But hang in there! The staff is kind and helpful. The shop has lots to look at while your order is being made. And the place is frequented by the locals, who turn out to be very nice if you actually talk to them. Ask for tips on where to go and what to do, it's better than the local tourism office. We did not stay to have our coffee, just poked around the merchandise, chatted with the locals, and took a bag of freshly ground Peruvian coffee and 2 enormous muffins for our breakfast at the hotel the next morning. I am still searching for coffee that matches what we found there. It's been over a year and I'm still looking. We'll probably make a trip back to Nashville just for that coffee. I'll be buying way more than one pound next time we go. read more

GO HERE. If you are trying to get coffee and you are visiting this town there are two main coffee houses. We went to the other one first. Our mistake!!! Then we searched for Common Grounds hoping to get actual coffee. The house blend here "Chaos" is amazing just by itself if you like your coffee black (it's a dark roast). Their mocha was also superb and they offer more milk options than most coffee houses. The employees knew about their coffee and were very pleasant and able to interact with all generations which is a big deal for me. Thank you for redeeming my coffee experience in Nashville! read more
