I waited a couple weeks to give my honest review. I took my Nakamichi BX-125, to Solutions! In all honesty I took the negative reviews into consideration, but also took them with a grain of salt. Upon arriving I was greeted by a young gentleman, which I didn't get his name, he seemed like a nice guy. Then came Stephon, we talked business first, took my info down and gave me the receipt with an assurance he was going to pinpoint the problem to my cassette deck and fix it. Then he gave me his philosophical ideas about how we listen to music, and how a lot of it has been made wrong , then proceeded to hand me a mixtape cd, all bangers by the way. There was a bit of a wait to get a call back about my cassette deck repairs, like a solid 2 weeks if not a bit more couple days passed. At first I was bit concerned but I remained to stay positive and trusted the process Anyways it's been a couple weeks I got my Nakamichi back and it works great and I couldn't be more happier. Look: this isn't the Apple Store. It's more of a mad scientist's lab. You go here because they are obsessives who will fix your stuff, not because of the niceties of the modern retail experience. I wouldn't go here for a simple solder job, but I would, for example, bring high end speakers or vintage electronics. Last time I went to pick up my order I also got a mix CD and a lecture on why I should listen to Glenn Gould with my speakers on a chair pointing towards the ceiling in order to better emulate the acoustic profile of a piano. I hate to leave bad reviews on locally-owned small businesses, but I had a rough experience here. I brought them my vintage turntable for repair. It had one issue with the speed selector switch working inconsistently. Over a week later, they called, telling me that it had a slew of problems they had to fix and gave me an exorbitant estimate, about twice what I paid for the turntable itself. I told them I would think about it. A few days later, I called back to say I'd decided to wait on the repairs, and that I would like to come pick up the turntable. They said they'd already started the work (even though I hadn't approved the estimate) and needed an hour to undo the work they'd already done, and that I would have to pay $35. This seemed crazy, but at this point I just wanted my turntable back, so I agreed. When I got to the shop, they brought the turntable and the ends of the original RCA cable were cut off and taped to the cable, essentially making the entire turntable unusable. They had taken a working turntable, made it useless, and then wanted to charge me extra to reattach the cables. I argued, and they agreed to re-splice the cables, which took 20 more minutes, while I waited. When I got the turntable home and plugged it in, I realized that the ground wire was completely missing, and the platter no longer turned at all. So I basically paid $35 for them to ruin my turntable, and now I have to take it somewhere else and pay more to fix the things they broke. read more

One of my beloved Technics 1200s was acting up, vibrating strangely anytime I set it to 45rpm and Solutions took care of it no problem. I see that some folks have had pretty negative experiences - but my experience was as follows: - Called the shop to discuss my situation, and they suggested a few quick fixes to see if I'd tried to find a solution on my own. IMHO very professional to offer up ideas rather than just say "bring it in" and charge people money if there's some easy fix. - When dropping off the turntable Stephon told me about the minimum charge and that he'd call me in a week to let me know what's up - although based on our conversations was pretty sure what was wrong and that it would be an easy fix. - Called me in less than week! They had easily diagnosed the issue and it was ready when I was. I was traveling at the time and wasn't able to get there for at least a week and they had no problem with that. - Smooth pickup, he knew exactly where my turntable was in his crowded shop and I was in and out in under 10 minutes after hearing a few stories from Stephon the proprieter. All in all, they swiftly diagnosed and fixed my Technics 1200 and the whole experience was professional from start to finish. I'm leaving this review so that people are aware of Stephen's repair policy, which is this: repair first, give a final quote second. *This is not a knock on the quality of the repair that Solutions! provides, as they did good work on my turntable. The $35 bench/assessment fee (very reasonable) did not include a follow up call to let me know what actually needed to be repaired on my turntable and how much it would cost. I brought my Dual player in because I thought there was a simple electrical issue. When I arrived on pickup day, i learned that multiple issues had been discovered and repaired without my consultation (RCA caps replaced, deoxidizing contact points, belt replaced, etc). When I asked Stephen to elaborate on his policy (and my now $237 bill), he offered to reverse everything for the initial price of $35 (which is, of course, unfair to the technicians who put in the hours on my device). So, just be aware that you will not be consulted before repairs are done on your items. read more

Excellent place to go to get your vintage Marantz repaired. It sounded really weak on phono so I was told to go here. Stephan helped me out and the charges me $35 to check it out. They totally cleaned it up and replaced some parts and even my wife was impressed with the new sound. I almost couldn't believe it's the same unit!! Taken things here twice for repair. First an old NAD receiver and then an old Technics tape deck. First time, the receiver was fixed in about a week or so, second time the tape deck took a few months as it needed more work and parts that took awhile to come. It's an old school repair shop and we're lucky to have one like this in central LA. All the other good ones are out in the Valley or halfway to Long Beach. Plus, you get the bonus of chatting with the owner who definitely knows his stuff (and has charming, colorful opinions about sound that he's eager to share). Basically, it's everything you want in a repair shop. Good work. Reasonable turnaround, especially for easier fixes, and some quirky people running the show. Long live Solutions! read more

I always get my home and office hifi stuff repaired here and Stephon and his team are solid. I've taken my gear to other places but Solutions is the only place that can fix complex issues. It's not your run of the mill repair shops, which is probably why all the other ones went out of business. I host a lot of events I'm constantly blowing out my speakers and burning out motherboards. Parking is easy here, cafe next door where you can wait. It's covid friendly as you don't need to enter into the store itself anymore. Solutions electronics are only good for repairing small electrical items.. stereo perhaps speakers and turntables.. I bought a hard drive professional digital Roland 2480 recorder, which is not on the market.. I was told by the owner Stefan "absolutely yes we can repair it anything can be repaired!" So I bought the my recorder over to his shop waited waited 2 months before I got an answer, took the machine home started it up it played fine the first day shut it down put it up again didn't play at all.. so to make a long story short, don't bring any equipment in there that's hard drive recorders or anything to do with computer electronics they don't know how to fix that.. stick to the small stuff that's what they're good for.. read more

First acoustic guitar I had set up here was great. A lovely proper setup. It was so great that I brought two more electric guitars in, and two more at the same time I picked up the first two. Basically don't be an idiot like me- because I only had one guitar finished before taking in an additional 4 for servicing. The following 4 were complete rubbish. Action off, setup with the wrong strings (or losing all the paperwork and not knowing what strings they put on), one guitar literally had one of the pickup lead wires yanked from its solder! I had to spend an hour with a voltage tester just to triple check i was soldering my poor guitar back together properly. There's no way they even tested it because it was incapable of making any noise when I picked it up. At the end of the day I spent more money then it would have cost to buy a new American fender to mess up 4 instruments! I was even charged $80 just to rewind some euk strings- which didn't fix its slipping tuning machine. Don't be like me, save your money, focus on science read more

Stopped in to have one RCA cable replaced on my Thorens turntable. It was sounding great before the white plug went out. I was quoted 30 dollars for the job. I pointed out that my cartridge was loose and to give me a quote on that as well. Never heard from him. I came by to pick it up after a few weeks, he didn't call. I was charged 130 dollars. For the cable, the cartridge which wasn't replaced and didn't need to be and "other things". "Other things" that was on the receipt and that's what ran my price up by 100 dollars. I paid and left because i was late for work, waiting on them to call the owner so he could gouge me from home. This guy is a rip off artist. He's only in business because he's easy to get to. read more

NOT MY SOLUTION! I took my device in because the headphone jack was broken. After talking to me for a long time about how the bark of a dog should be heard from the height of said dog (Nathan Fielder please help me), the man took my device in and told me to call back Friday. I called back the next Tuesday and no one had bothered to look at it. Then when I finally did get a call, they quoted me $270 and said there was a lot wrong with my device. Now I knew my whole device worked I just couldn't hear anything so I went back to Solutions to retrieve it. They gave it back to my still open and not put together and charged me $25 for the inspection. At this point I did not care about where the sound of a bark came from. I was mad because no one told me about the $25 charge. And the thing was I TOLD THEM what exactly was wrong. There were no other problems. Just fix the dang thing and move on. Since Solutions was not my solution I grabbed a coffee at Dinosaur Coffee and drove all the way to Buena Park to Tap Electronics and they fixed it in 2 days for $73. Of course as soon as I dropped it off at Tap I get a call from Solutions telling me they made a huge mistake and it would only cost $90 dollars to fix. I said okay and hung up. The next day I got another call from Solutions from someone else apologizing for the same mistake and saying it would be $135 to fix. Either way Tap was cheaper and better so I never went back. I really wish I hadn't wasted $25 on their inspection, but I guess ya live and ya learn. All I learned is it don't matter where a bark comes from, you'll still know it's a dog. This review is years overdue. I usually bring my new guitar amps here for servicing because the manufacturers don't really bias them right out of the factory, or I get one used that needs some TLC after years of use and abuse. As a live musician, tone is extremely important to me, and it's refreshing to know that this place is around because they take it seriously too. That said, I've taken all of my guitar amps and stereo equipment here for almost 10 years and am always satisfied with the service. They must be doing something right for others as well, because every time I stop by for servicing a new piece of craigslist-bought equipment, there are people ahead of me and after me. The collection of 1-star stories since I found this place make me laugh because everyone is bringing in these high-dollar vintage items for repair. My personal experience with owning such electronic equipment is that it's a costly venture, due to rare parts, extensive labor, and unreliable quality in buying used equipment. If there's a better place that beats the quality and prices of Solutions, then this place would not have lasted this long. Stephen and John always give straight answers, and have always been clear about the $25 inspection fee if there's nothing worth to repair (again, see above about electronic equipment being a costly venture.) Yes, sometimes when I have an amp in for repair, I don't get a quick call. So instead, I call them (I came up with that idea myself) and get an update. I hope Solutions reads this and knows that I recommend them to a lot of people because it's one of the last standing bastions on the importance of tone, live sound, and the intricacies of sound in general in the age of ear buds and streaming services. read more

Charged me way more than we discussed and didn't fully fix my equipment. I will not be coming back here anytime soon.

First off, Stephen was not pleasant or professional to work with. I brought in a speaker with a busted cone and he spent literally fifteen minutes talking about chocolate ice cream, drugs and other things that had nothing to do with repair. I wouldn't mind how weird he was if he offered good service. But for one busted speaker cone, he charged me the full price of a new set of monitors. He promised that for the price, he'd put a limiter in [so I couldn't play music too loud and bust the cone again] AND make the speakers sound better than a brand new set. I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. I asked how he'd fix the cone and "make 'em sound better than new." He refused to explain it to me. I told him I've take audio engineering classes and that didn't change a thing. I left offended and nervous about the repair. Turns out he used super glue. I don't know if he even put a limiter in, because about 18 months later, the same cone popped again. Fixed it with my own super glue. My experience was frustrating, and a waste of time and money. Please make the trek to a better repair shop and save yourself a lot of trouble. If you're still on the fence, look at the reviews. All either five stars or ones. So you're either in good hands or you're screwed, with no way to tell. read more

Simply put--if you have any other option for your repair, go with it. I've taken repairs to Solutions twice in the last 3 years, and both experiences were identically disappointing. Here's what you will experience: First, it's metered street parking only. When you drop of your repair, they'll tell you they can take a look. They won't tell you about diagnosis fees. You'll leave a phone number, but they will never call you (I was told "There was no machine." It's 2013. I have an iPhone. Think about it. Also worth mentioning that there is a notice taped the wall stating that abandoned repairs are forfeited to Solutions). Next, you'll call or travel to the store to check in on your phantom gear. You will be told that, for vague reasons, the cost of repair is exorbitant (my record player's "bad wiring" cost $114). Now, you must decide whether to have the repair done. If you do, there is no reasonable guess as to how long it will take. No exaggeration - my keyboard was in their shop for over 3 months with zero communication from them! If you choose not to have the repair done, pay the diagnosis fee and carry your now-dusty equipment back to your car. (My speakers were stored on floor under other things. When the employee helping me couldn't find them, I had to peek through the stacks--literally stacks--of music gear and point them out to her because they weren't labeled, ticketed or anything!) The shop, staff, and customer service give off all-around bad vibes. My gut instinct is that there are some dishonest practices going on here! Avoid it! read more

I had a nightmare experience and paid way too much for it. I brought in an antique 1960's Motorola turntable and described to the owner the problems I was experiencing, how I thought it needed a new needle and repair the connections to one of the speakers. He says of course he'll take care of it, give it a nice look over and polish it up. When I returned to pick up the turntable, the needle wasn't replaced - he told me they didn't replace needle (which I discussed with him specifically when I brought it in and he never bothered to mention), the issue with the speakers was not fixed, he told me that aspect was unfixable, and he told me that he went in and cleaned the heads (or knobs or something like that) which was supposed to Improve the control over the sound, the bass and treble - but originally there was no problem with this, and he actually made the knobs work much less effectively. And he wanted to charge me $150 for all of this!!! When I pointed out to him that none of the things I brought this in for were fixed, he became incredibly defensive and demanded I pay him the full amount. I told him that was unreasonable, and said I'd pay him something for his time and whatever effort he put into doing what he did, but not the whole amount. He was fuming and yelled at me in front of an other poor customer as I told him he must reduce the price. He said he would reduce it $3! Yes, $3!!! Absurd. Infuriating. Despite my anger and incredible disappointment, I paid the bs $147 for a vintage record player in worse condition than I brought it in and stormed out of this hack joint. A horrible, extremely disappointing, infuriating, expensive experience. I tell everyone I know to steer clear of this place for repairs. Sure this store is behind the famous Eliot Smith wall, but if Eliot came to this shop today I'm sure he'd write an angsty pissed off song about the fraud shop owner who screwed his customers and charged them an arm and a leg. I think this guy is a con artist. I will never come here again. You can read why below but that pretty much sums it up for me. I've seldom felt my time and money so wasted. I paid $350 to have a high-end audiophile amplifier recapped (foolishly thinking this was a fair price) to have it need a re-service only several months later. After I had the amp serviced I sold it on Audiogon (It's like craigslist for exotic stereo gear). I became friends with the buyer after starting a correspondence with him over the sale. Much to my dismay the amp failed again and David (the gentleman that bought the amp) had to take it in to be re-capped. The idiots at Solutions only did a partial repair job!!! I was so EMBARRASSED because I sold the amp stating that it had just been serviced and given a clean bill of health but because my new friend had to go through the trouble of getting it repaired himself. I still have the sales receipt but because I didn't have the amp there was nothing I could do about it. Just avoid this guy and save yourself his stupid questions (how long did you abuse drugs for) about how tall is Brittany Spears, how tall is Mariah Carey...not joking! I was going to give one star, but I believe one stands a chance of receiving quality service once in a while so I gave him 2. Long story short, this guy is bonkers. Paranoid delusional is how I would classify him, though I am just some smarty pants and not a psychologist. The guy is a nonstop liar; it's compulsive -- much like some con artists I've met in my life. Produced forth explanations for the failure of my gear which ranged from very unlikely to physically impossible. Verified with two electrical engineers, both of whom said "Get your gear out of there immediately" He has the capability to fix your gear, but you'll have little confidence that he'll be in the mood to apply it to yours. Yes, you are going to have to pay some money to these guys, even if they can't fix your unit. But chances are they can fix it. Yes, you are going to probably going to get some crazy talk from the owner who will bend your ear and test both your patience and your sanity. But that is part of the charm. So just make sure your meter is well fed first before going in there. Yes this place looks like a bad disorganized bachelor pad. But ... ditto ... on the charm... If someone has a better suggestion of where to go please suggest it. Otherwise you are going to be safest to end up here anyway if your beloved audiophile equipment is in need of repair. My experiences here have been good. The only problem is the nearby Pioneer Chicken has closed down. But can't deduct another star just for that - so - 4 stars. read more

These guys are pretty terrible. I brought in an AR XA turntable with a bad motor to be repaired only to have it spend six months in limbo at their shop before finally taking it back unrepaired and having to pay $25 for the experience. I got the same bizarre lectures about music and recording from the owner, and the same tour around the messy shop that other reviewers have mentioned none of which would have bothered me in the slightest if they had actually had any idea what they were doing. After dropping the table off and not hearing anything for several months I I finally called up and was told that the motor was bad and that part was backordered or unavailable. I managed to find one easily on ebay and delivered it to solutions myself. Another month passed without word so I called up again only to find out that the new motor didnt fit the old pulley so it couldn't be used but that they may have a motor that would work somewhere in their shop that they could sell me for $45. Not wanting to pay for yet another motor I managed to find the correct pulley on another turntable I had and delivered it to Solutions hoping that at last they might actually be able to get everything working. I was assured they would call me back the next day and let me know if it would work. They didnt call. I finally called them a few weeks later to be told that yes the pulley now fits but that the motor had the wrong wiring and couldn't be used with my turntable. That , of course, would have ben good for them to have told me 6 weeks earlier when I had first brought the motor to them. And it was strange, because from my internet research I knew that this particular motor was installed on 90% of AR turntables made in the US and that the wiring diagram was easily available online. So I belatedly decided to just pick the thing up and see if I could put the motor in it myself. When I arrived to pick up my turntable I noticed that it was missing the brass counterweight from the tonearm and asked the owner about it. After first trying to tell me that my turntable wasn't made with a counterweight he then walked over to another customers turntable, pulled the counterweight off the tonearm and handed it to me. Not cool. So I got the table home, turned it over on my kitchen counter, and after 30 minutes managed to get the motor installed and running with my leatherman. OK, the motor did run backwards... but after another twenty minutes and some trial and error it was working perfectly. These turntables aren't electronically complicated devices, a handful of wires, a couple of capacitors, a switch, and a motor. I have no idea what I am doing but managed to sort this thing out in less than an hour with some help from the internet. How is it that Solutions couldn't manage in six months? They quoted me $190 to install their motor, does that mean their labor rate is $150 an hour? They aren't worth it. read more

Big mistake. I'm just a regular person, no special equipment. Took my cd player to be repaired. He said it would be no problem to repair, then gave a strange, disjointed speech about why Asian people are bad drivers (something about when they were babies and car speakers are too far away?). Umm, okay. He then gave me a homemade cd of music that I think was supposed to tell me if my car speakers are any good. I called a few days later for update and he had no info for me yet, but more interested in whether I'd listened to the cd. I took player in August 17 and I am writing this review on December 8. I have called at least monthly and gotten nothing but weird, very "unscientific" explanations for why it's not repaired yet. (The parts he put in don't like each other yet, etc.) I am going to pick it up today and take it somewhere else. While looking for another place, I discovered Solutions' other Yelp reviews. So wish I'd seen them before I went a whole summer through Thanksgiving without my cd player. read more

Solutions has transformed my listening to recorded music FOREVER.   I went to Solutions to ask for help with a recording device, which was addressed. What happened next was a TOTAL SURPRISE. Stephen, who works at Solutions, gave me a beautiful gift. At first I did not understand. He gave me a CD to play specifically in my car. I played it. It was a collection of artist singing. They were not my favorite artist nor were they my favorite songs. But the music that came out of the speakers in my car from the CD was amazing. I was listening to recorded music in its purest form. It was 100% Alive. I had never heard alive recorded music before. I have since played that CD hundreds and hundreds of times while driving. It is part of my car now, just like the engine. It sounds like the artists are performing in front of me. I can hear every note sung and every instrument played. The sounds seem to enter my soul and then travel beyond infinity each time I listen to the CD.  I returned to Solutions to thank Stephen for the gift. He offered to create the same incredible quality of sound for me using my sound system at home. He did. I now have the most satisfying sound system in my home thanks to Solutions. Hey look I've read all these other reviews and I got to say I disagree with those who call the proprietor of this business some kind of a "nut case". Me, I've always said that Los Angeles is like a bowl of granola ....What isn't nuts is flakes. That said give me a break, this guy is the new normal very nice and straight forward regarding his repairs and everything I've ever had repaired there was done properly and within a week. Not many people in this city able to work on tube gear and come with as many years of experience as the people who work at Solutions I'm a conversationist and love to talk with people and had no problem with this establishment just put some money in the parking meter and bring your gear knowing you'll get value that in this day and age is hard to find in the city of L.A. read more

Odds are, if you find yourself in Solutions, you've run out of simpler options. I showed up at their door with a 1960 Lenco '800' turntable. The idler wheel was worn out and the RCA cable was shredded. Now you tell me--where else in Los Angeles could I go to get a custom idler for a vintage Swiss phonograph? As a customer, the owners treated me with respect. As other reviewers have mentioned, there's a strange energy hovering in the room, but they know their craft. Unfortunately, Solutions is neither quick nor inexpensive. Sum total, it took nearly three months and $300 to get my Lenco running again. To give them some credit, I opted for the costliest repairs--a special order idler with period-appropriate upgrades to the RCA and power cords. I had to ride them pretty hard, however, to get it done. Regardless of the ETA, always call first or prepare to be disappointed. If you're lucky, they might leave a message on your phone. If I could perform these repairs myself, I would. If I could have my audio equipment factory refurbished by lab-coated technicians, I would. But in this case, I just wasn't in the mood. I took my Sherwood receiver into this place because there isn't really anyone else in the area who does audio repairs. The gentleman who helped me seemed extremely knowledgeable, so I felt good about my decision upon leaving the shop. He said "it'll take us about 3-4 days to get to it, and we'll give you a call." Two and a half weeks went by, and I hadn't heard anything. So, naturally - I followed up, and finally got some information that there was a short in my receiver and they needed to order a very small part to repair it. I started to feel good about things again, since now I had some clarity on what was wrong with my receiver, and thought I'd finally be able to get my turntable/vinyl setup up and running again soon. Two weeks went by. Then another two weeks. Then another two weeks. I hadn't heard anything from these people and had to start chasing them down to get any kind of information. They kept telling me they'd "check on it" to see what the status of the order was, but I never got any kind of a real update. Over two months after I dropped off my receiver for repair, I finally called one last time to see if the part had arrived (because of course I hadn't heard anything - SHOCKING). They said it hadn't (of course). So, I went and bought a new receiver and spent $15 more than they quoted me for repair at this scam of a shop. Problem solved...two and a half months later. I brought an amp in for repair, was told there was an inspection fee if he couldn't fix it, was told he could fix it in a few days. I said it would be great if I could get it in 24 hours, and he said OK, had it done in 18 hours, at a completely reasonable price, and rented me a second amp for $30 for the weekend to boot. It's a funky little shop, but they do the work--the amp worked better than ever--and do it fast and at a good price. I see that all the reviews here are either 5 stars or 1 star--that's why I wanted to review it. I agree with those who say they don't trust the 1 star reviews--I was told up front about the inspection fees. It's true they don't call you about when your gear is ready, but... so what? read more

Horrible. I brought in my turntable for repair. They called to tell me they couldn't fix it. I was charged $25 for this. For nothing! To tell me it's broken and they could not fix it. THIS PLACE IS TERRIBLE GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!! read more
