Boomer is simply the best around, I just can't recommend him enough. He is so quick to respond to emails, and always send thorough, thoughtful responses. When he quotes completion times and prices they don't change, he finishes projects on time (and surprisingly quickly). He has given me great advice over email on synths I am interested in, and his communication is alway kind, detailed and candid. I should also mention he does great work, ESPECIALLY on vintage Roland gear, apparently he worked for them for a while. Huh..well, I certainly never thought I'd be writing a review like this. I'm not even one to typically leave a Yelp review. I'll start off by saying I decided to take my business to this shop because of a recommendation from a good friend who had a great experience getting their synthesizer serviced. My initial phone call was pleasant. I'm unsure of the guy who works up front at Future Music but this phone call, dropping off the synth and picking up were all the same dude and he was nothing but cool. Really nice guy and good but quick conversation. Essentially I was having an issue with a Juno 60. I got in contact over email with Boomer. All initial correspondence was cordial. He seemed like a nice guy and understood I'd be driving from Bakersfield (2 hours away so a total of 8 hours to drop off and pick up). I dropped it off. He said it was finished and let me know the cost. I Venmo'd him immediately and drove down to pick it up the next day. This is where the silly problem started. I expected to receive some sort of work order/receipt showing what had been replaced, etc. You know.. what you get any time you have some sort of work done on an instrument anywhere ever? See, you never deal with Boomer (LA Synth Co which works alongside Future Music) in person/directly.. just over email. Which is fine. That's the way they do things. After I got home, tried it out and the synth is good as new. Great. I would like a copy of what exactly was done just to keep it for my records. So, I email Boomer this exact message: "Hey Boomer Picked up the Juno yesterday. Thanks so much for the work you did on it. I was hoping they would give me a receipt/work-order, itemizing what you had done. Just to throw in the case and keep for my records. Is it possible for you to make something like that up and send it over to me? Thanks again. So stoked to have it in great working order." of which his reply was: "Yeah. It will be a few days." That was Saturday November 21st. Today is Tuesday December 1st and I hadn't heard anything yet and just wanted to check back in. So, I sent this email: "Hey Boomer, just wanted to check in about this. Thanks a lot." of which his reply was: "You've now pissed me off. I'm one guy. I'm insanely busy. We just had a holiday. I have a life outside of work, too. You're on my list, but not at the top. Now I'm done with you cause this is entitled and annoying. Make your own." Uh, what? This was such a ridiculous way to reply when all I was doing was simply inquiring. Boomer, my man.. I'm sorry if you're overworked and overstressed. Your skin shouldn't be nearly this thin to not be able to accept someone emailing twice with such a simple request. I did send a reply but my email had been added to the dreaded BLACKLIST so I'm not longer able to contact him directly. So, to summarize.. the shop is cool. They seem to have a ton of cool gear. They obviously stay busy enough to be able to treat their customers like sh!t because return business must not mean much to them. This was such a bummer. I approached LA SynthCo with significant hesitation and reservation given some of the negative reviews here about Boomer's communication. For what it's worth, he was extremely professional, helpful, and also fun to interact with when he looked at a piece of gear for me. It's clear he's a subject matter expert and he loves what he does. I don't know very much about vintage analogue gear but he was patient in explaining things to me and not condescending. A friend of mine referred me to this business. I had initiated contact on a Sunday, mind you I am on EAST COAST TIME, for an inquiry to see what needed to be done on a piece of equipment. (Love how this guy honestly thinks I actually CHANGED THE TIME. I'm on east coast time. Maybe this dude isn't competent with technology?) Never wanted a "free repair." Just an idea of what I was dealing with in my problem. I definitely would've used this boomer for repairs and would pay a great price as he had great reviews. I had addressed if they needed to speak over the phone to make it easier for communication and they pointed me to their email. Once we started emailing, I had told him what was going on. My gear had literally popped and smelled like something was burning. I had to open the hood to see if anything was burnt or damaged as a result of the burning smell that occurred. When I sent pictures of this, his attitude changed on a drop of a dime. I was totally NOT looking for a free repair. Besides, how in the world would that work realistically? Plus, I never indicated to him I wanted a free repair! That was his own paranoid assumption. My apologies if that was the case however, he also had the option to phone me and ask what exactly was I looking for if he was in fact confused or assuming. He was a complete jerk to the fact that I knew nothing. Belittled me for checking on the inside of my equipment. He's email was so confusing. He said he would try to help out yet he said he wanted out on the repairs? So back and forth. Anyways, this dude was an absolute jerk. I came to him to see if he could give me an idea on what was happening and instead I got some cranky boomer with an ego the size of a jet landing strip. Stay away from this business. Maybe this guy is too old to do any work. He honestly could have just politely replied that he would address my issue tomorrow or just say that he declines but in a more professional and appropriate way. His lack of people skills indicates he probably won't be in business very much longer. I also love his Karen remark. He sounds like one of those old-timers that just figured out how to use Facebook and is loving it just because his fellow boomer friends are also attempting to keep up with current trends. read more

Definitely the place to go for vintage synth repair! I just got an Oberheim Matrix 6 and it was having some issues that I couldn't solve - so I emailed Boomer and he sent me instructions on some things to try myself before bringing it in to see if I could fix it on my own. It worked and I ended up not even having to bring it in. Absolutely would recommend going here first before other places if you need something fixed - I could tell from the way he talked about the synth that he really knows his stuff. read more

I recently came into possession of a very nice classic analog synthesizer that needed some work, and my research in the local Orange County area led me to LA SynthCo, at which point I started communicating with Boomer through email. I'm a guitar player by trade and have never dealt with classic analog synths before. Boomer is awesome to work with. He's friendly, honest, knowledgeable, thorough, and communicative. The restoration job he did on my synth came in on time and on budget, and it now sounds excellent and is in perfect working order. The shop that he's located in in pretty cool, too! Bought an Akai AX80 that was in pretty rough shape. Looked at several different repair places in town and LA Synth Co. emailed back quickly, professionally, and friendly. Dropped it off at Future Music (repairs are offsite) and told them I was in no rush. I get an email from Boomer a few days later diagnosing everything and how much it would cost to fix. First off, it was WAY less than expected (and I asked around). I knew there was gonna be a lot of manual soldering involved, but lo and behold, he did it quickly (and installed updated firmware and fixed a key). Best part? It was FAST. Like, less than a week after dropping it off. It looks, feels, and sounds better than ever and Boomer was very communicative during the whole process (I got the whole email chain). So what's up with some of the reviews here? I have no idea. I think if you respect him and his time, then he will go above and beyond for you. I'm 100% proof of that. PS: I used to be a district manager for EMU/Ensoniq, so I know what it means to have good customer service in our industry. Just want to share a bad experience with this shop about communication. After there had obvisiouly problems with adresses in europe and i try to give them a hint that there is a problem with there ordering system, the communication with them turns very rude (guy called Boomer) and they refuse to serve me. Still waiting for the refound of my money that i pay in advance. I dont say here, its a bad shop for repairing synths. This i can not judge. But in communication way and habbit its very rude. Who is interesting i can share the email conversation with you and you can give me a feedback if i do something wrong. But from my point i dont want to have business with them anymore. I can't say enough good things about Boomer, he's very knowledgeable, humble and honest. If you have a vintage synth that needs repair and you would like to have it back quickly and save yourself the headache from other shady repair places then bring it here. Boomer diagnosed the problem the same day and gave me a very reasonable estimate for repair. My Korg Polysix was fixed in two days and was good as new back in my studio. Now here is the horror story I avoided: I called Rob at Rosen Sound and told him about my problem, his response was that Korgs are very hard to work on and have many problems. He wanted a $200 non refundable down payment with no guarantee that he can diagnose the problem, no guarantee that he can fix the problem and no time estimate on when he can even start the diagnose process. Folks this is NOT how you run a repair shop. Please don't fall for these kind of technicians! They will waste your time and only rip you off. If you have a vintage synth and it needs repair always call and talk to a few repair shops, read honest reviews and don't fall for people who talk a big game with zero guarantees. Boomer replaced the the chip set in my Juno 106 with the analog renaissance chips for a very reasonable price. On top of that he installed a grounded power plug, no additional charge. Also I forgot to tell him about some intermittent static I was getting from what I thought was the 1/4 outputs. He found the problem and fixed it without me even mentioning it. Very happy. read more

I had a USB problem with my Maschine MIDI controller. I called Native Instruments and they told me I had to send it to them and it would cost $110. I then called LA SynthCo (Boomer) on the phone, hoping for a faster and more affordable option, and he actually recognized from experience that it probably wasn't in fact a hardware problem; I simply had to update the driver on my computer. Boomer is one of the most genuine and helpful people I've ever encountered. I first bought a vintage, relatively obscure cord from him before sending him gear to repair and no matter what I send his way he always manages to fix it quickly and affordably. On top of that sometimes he will run through possible trouble shooting options you can do at home in order you to save you the money, even on weekends. I've wanted to write this review for the longest time. Michael Boomer at LASYNTHCO is the very best. He rescued my Korg Polysix keyboard synthesizer from purgatory. I'd recently gotten it back from a well-known eBay synthesizer "spa" guru who took the better part of a year to install a modification that should've literally taken a day - only to end up damaging it! (This is a pages-long saga destined for the gear forums to warn others of doing business with this particular person.) I didn't know what else to do but bring my synth in to Michael Boomer. He'd done some work on my Alesis Micron before, installing a lighted screen modification. It worked perfectly, and still does. It was a quick & pleasant experience too. Anyway, I just left it with him. After five months of Michael Boomer methodically combing through each section of the Korg Polysix (piece by piece) he finally determined that the Kiwisix upgrade had been installed incorrectly, frying part of it. After we received replacement parts from KiwiTechnics (Thanks Murray!!!) Michael got my keyboard working again. I went from the worst sales experience to the dealing with the best guy ever. I was so relieved the ordeal was over. My keyboard is fixed and I have been making music on my synth ever since!!! I can only begin to describe the debt I feel owe Michael Boomer for hanging in there, finding and fixing the mystery problem ailing my synth. Where others might've given up, he stuck with it. A note regarding manners: I personally cannot stand crabby repair people no matter how good their skills are with rare/vintage musical gear. Well, Mr. Boomer is the very opposite of that surly set.
