A warranty means nothing when the company fails to provide service. We made a substantial financial investment in a solar system that was sold with a warranty. Now that the system is not working properly, SolarMax says its service appointments are booked months out. When we explained that we could not continue waiting while paying high Edison bills, they suggested hiring an electrician at our own expense. Customers should not have to choose between waiting months for service and paying out of pocket to repair a system that is still under warranty. SolarMax should stand behind its product and provide timely service. Their service department has been extremely frustrating. We have repeatedly been promised return calls that never came, and some of the service representatives we have dealt with have been rude and dismissive. Meanwhile, our solar system remains down, and we continue paying for electricity every month. It also appears that service may be different depending on whether you purchase or lease your system. When a leased system stops producing, the solar company loses money and has a financial reason to repair it quickly. Once you purchase your system and the company has already been paid, it feels as though you are "put out to pasture" when service is needed. Also: READ THE FINE LINES: Before signing a contract, carefully read every detail and make sure every promise or guarantee is included in the signed agreement. Do not rely solely on assurances made through emails or conversations. Our experience has shown us that what is promised before the sale may not be honored afterward. We love having solar and are glad we installed it. We simply wish we had chosen a company that stood behind its product, honored its warranty, and responded quickly when its customers needed service. We lost our solar in the hottest months of 2026 and still don't see it being fixed any time soon. read more

Update: received a detailed response on 2/26 along with the note below from Nicole that they were short staffed. Update: I emailed them on 2/23 as requested by Nicole. Will update when I hear back. Would not recommend SolarMax at this point until they improve their customer service. Look into other companies and their service reviews since you will most likely have to contact them multiple times with questions about the system/billing. They were very prompt and quick with reaching out and getting back to us when they were trying to sell us solar. However, now that we have been customers for years and our sales rep left, it takes multiple calls to even get through to customer service and then multiple follow up calls after since they have to email other departments to get an answer and do not call back. It seems like they are short staffed and for a big company like this should invest in more staff for customer service. That way they can provide the same experience we received in the beginning. They get you with overprodcut clause in their bill -- be actually aware of this company and how shady they are - I have solar panels on my main house and it doesn't just randomly increase Use Sunrun if you can! I have filed a complaint with the state Here is the FINE print "You will be billed for the estimated average monthly production for the first year. At the 13th month of billing a review of the solar production will be performed to determine how much power the solar system has produced for the year and how much Solar Manager has charged you for the year. At this point if the system has under produced Solar Manager will give you a credit on your account. If the system has over produced you will be charged for the over production. Solar Manager will also adjust your account to include that extra monthly production in the coming year." my bill that was $116 a month is now $136 a month, with another annual charge of what they state - "We also completed the annual true-up on your account. Over the past year, your system produced more energy than expected. Because of this overproduction, your account had a reconciliation balance of $183.95" Again WHAT? how am I saving? read more

My family and I had solar panels installed by SolarMax several years ago. Recently, we noticed water damage in multiple areas of our home. After inspecting the roof, I discovered a very concerning issue. When SolarMax installed the solar panels, they hired a roofing company to modify the roof beforehand. That roofing work was never properly completed, leaving a large section of the roof without shingles and exposing bare wood. As a result, there are now multiple areas of our home showing signs of water intrusion and possible mold. I immediately contacted SolarMax and informed them that this was an urgent matter requiring prompt attention. More than 24 hours have passed, and I have not received a response. I was told they would reach out to the roofing company they used, but there has been no follow-up. What I do not understand is how SolarMax could proceed with installing the solar panels, mark the job as completed, and leave our home with such a significant roofing defect. I am extremely concerned about the potential extent of the damage to our home, as well as the possible health implications for my family. I have never had allergies in the past, yet I began experiencing them shortly after the panels were installed, which raises serious concerns about mold exposure. I am hopeful that SolarMax will take responsibility for this issue and fully address both the roofing defect and any resulting damage to our home. However, I am very disappointed by the lack of communication and urgency shown so far. read more

SolarMax completely failed to diagnose my system. The inverter failed first -- that part is obvious -- but they never figured out why. They didn't inspect the wiring, didn't test the strings, didn't check the roof, nothing. They blamed the inverter and walked away. When the Tesla inverter was installed, it immediately exposed the real problem SolarMax ignored: a DC arc fault coming from the panels. That's the kind of issue any competent installer should have caught long before the inverter ever died. Instead, SolarMax misdiagnosed the system, replaced nothing, fixed nothing, and then disappeared. After the Tesla flagged the arc fault, SolarMax still refused to respond. They ignored: every call every email CSLB (active case) their bond company (active claim) Tesla (who escalated my case for "Authorized Reseller Non‑Participation") SolarMax didn't repair the system, didn't follow up, didn't take responsibility, and left an unsafe condition on my roof. This company is not what it used to be. They abandon installs, misdiagnose problems, and refuse to support their own work. **Update** Originally I was very unhappy and there was a huge communication issue and trying to get something fixed, or done was impossible. I became pretty vocal about it and received a call looking to make it right and fix any issue/communicate better. I received a call with an apology and direct contact numbers for any issue in the future. I gave 4 stars because they did work to fix the issues quickly and didn't take weeks/months as in the past. STAY AWAY. I hired this company to install a complete solar system, including an LG whole house battery, in 2021. The system worked for a while, then the battery failed completely. Technicians came out multiple times and never fixed it. On their last visit, they fabricated a story claiming someone had tampered with the wiring to the panel -- which was absolutely false -- used it to void my warranty, and cut off all communication. I then hired an independent company to evaluate the system. Their finding: the LG whole house battery installed in my home was already under a manufacturer recall at the time of installation. I was never informed of this. Now I am left dealing with LG directly -- 8+ hours on hold with their recall line and no resolution -- and considering legal action because no one on either end is willing to take responsibility. This company installed recalled equipment as part of a major solar system, blamed the customer when it failed, voided a warranty based on a false claim, and disappeared. That is not a service provider. That is a liability. read more

In 2020 I shopped for solar with multiple companies. Dan Cooley, who worked for SolarMax's sales team was recommended to me by a coworker. Dan and SolarMax not only were much less expensive than some of these companies quoting me 40k+ (SolarMax for our system was 18k), but the process was so easy and most of it was done without even an in person visit or sales presentation. Most of it was done using GoogleMaps and Docusign. It is now 2024 and our system is still producing at the same rate it was four years ago and we've had no issues whatsoever with the system. Please, do not use this company unless you like wasting time and money. I bought 29 panels with a 20 year warranty and paid a good amount of money in cash. In the beginning everything went great, it's when there is a problem with the system is when there is no more customer service. I have a panel that is not working and they keep saying they reached out to the manufacturer for the warranty and are still waiting for an answer. Well, it's been over 10 months and it's still not fixed. Really, 10 months so far ? How long should I have to wait for the manufacturer they bought the panels from to respond ? I believe 1 of 2 things is going on. 1, Solarmax is lying or 2, the manufacturer in China is ignoring them. Either way, I can't believe they would do this to a customer over a few hundred dollar panel. Solarmax sold me the equipment and needs to fix my non working panel. Update: When we were told multiple times the statement "we will make this right", I assumed they looked up the term before applying it into practice. We were contacted by the projects manager and they did send a technician to finish the patchwork on the outerwall and was told that they color match paint the walls if I had the paint available, which I provided. I only wish that I was informed that not only do they color match the repair, but they would vandalize your property as well. Now I wouldn't be as upset if the side of my house that looks like giant boulder took a clay dump on was only a dirt patch. But what was covered by puddles of paint is my water irrigation shut off valves for emergencies. That along with splatter marks of paint on areas that now look a carpenters pants only added to the insult. This is completely disrespectful and borderlines vandalism of property. My husband spent an hour shoveling paint out this area, rewashing it, then shoveling that back out. They offered to send someone out to clean it but we were done doing the work ourselves by then for something that should have never occured. Plus, we are definitely not waiting for this paint to dry up. (see pictures provided) After sending pictures and complaints out to the company, my husband got a call back from the chief officer and sales rep. We were offered an apology. Now imagine your server at a restaurant drops your food on the floor, steps on it, puts it back on the plate, and serves it to you with an apology. That's basically how we feel about this apology at this point. My husband was contacted by Jacob the sales rep after this incident with promises of "working overnight to fix this and will get back to you asap". This was 2 weeks ago. The only reply we recieved since then was to schedule a final inspection. My husband did reply to him asking what came out of the whole situation. No replies whatsoever. It feels like they're just trying to forget about the whole situation. Now what is even more upsetting is that by signing up for a solar company, you are supposed to form a long term partnership in regards to your panel maintenance. Since we are not really getting this resolved, we will be pursing this through different channels and filing our complaints through the governing licensing organization. read more

I purchased my Enphase system with Solarmax Technologies in 2020 and it's been almost 3 years since I've had it. Initially, like most on here with their reviews regarding their gripes with project management, sales person, schedules, communication, it's most often true, because I experienced all of it and was greatly frustrated, although I had a really good sales person. Not perfect, but he answered my calls and helped address my concerns. I'm a detailed kind of person, and it makes it that much more difficult and frustrating when your sales person doesn't relay your notes to the Project Manager. Project Manger doesn't relay messages to the Scheduler. The on-site lead doesn't know anything with what's happening other than to show up on date, time, with crew to do xyz and doesn't relay messages back that you've communicated and if any comms go around, it's lost in translation somewhere. And they don't keep you updated, follow-up... So yes a communication cluster bleep. But I've learned from my friends and and those I've spoken with that used other vendors, read reviews from other vendors, and it appears to be, almost industry standard, which doesn't make it any better or okay. But one thing for sure, is when you do get a hold of someone at Solarmax, it will take effort, and lots of effort, and follow-ups, baby sitting, whatever word choice you'd like to use. At the end of the day, if you want it done right, you have to be on top of the issues and work with them, and constantly communicate. Their customer service is willing to work with you and they often more than not, will fix, or correct the issues as they really do strive for good customer satisfaction. My experience overall has been less than steller with their process, but I'm still giving them 4 stars because they listened and were willing to work out the issues that I had, everything from broken tiles, to location of the installation pipes, and at the end, my system works very well, their panels looks beautiful on my roof compared to other panels around my neighborhood, performs better than stated, and overall I'm very happy with my system. My HOA is happy, everything is clean and it's not an ugly solar install. Would I use them again? That's a difficult question, as I could always use someone else, and may experience other hair pulling and unsatisfactory expereince. I've had my fill and have become pretty distrustful regarding contractors. But yes, I would use them again because I've worked with them, I know what to expect and I know and trust they will help and work with me. But more so, it's due to their panels, they make it in Riverside, and are close to OC and San Diego ("local") and it's a great product and works great with Enphase. Like any construction/remodeling jobs, read the contract carefully, understand what you're agreeing to, don't make assumptions, and always get written confirmation and be precise, concise, about what you're asking for, and don't confuse your vendor by making to many changes. Lastly, review and communicate what you don't feel is right. Work it out. I hope this review helps others and would consider using them. I am planning to use them again for my parent's home if price and such is right but do your homework. Since 2020 till now with other reviews, if the same complaints are happening, makes you wonder what they are doing to really improve. Buyer Beware! Althought we was promised a lower electric bill with Solar Max, all we got was a bunch of dust. It's just my wife and I in a small home and we still pay about $100 to $130 electric bill monthly plus the cost of solar. At this point Solar didn't make a big difference. But thats not the worst of it. We had a solar panel not producing, so we contacted Solar Max. They sent out a Technition in a very timely manner to troubleshoot. Great service! But thats where the customer service ended. For two months now I've been trying to get a replacement panel and for two months got nothing but excuses. The panel wasn't removed so the manufacture had nothing to inspect so why a delay in getting the warranty approved. I was very persistent with Solar Max , They finally got the warranty approved after a month went bye, but now they say the manufacture has to ship it to them. Another delay and my electric bill continues to skyrocket. I find it hard to believe that Solar Max doesn't have any panels in stock or available locally. Just recently we contacted Solar Max for an upgrade to our system, but seeing how the warranty system works we will pass on any futher up grades with Solar Max. These delays seem to be an ongoing issues when I read the BBB complaints about Solar Max. So beware before buying and don't always believe what sales tell you. The only hold ups were dealing with the city for permits and inspections. The installers were clean and professional and efficient. I have had my solar for 5 years now. My electric bill doubled during the wintertime and lowered from approximately 500 to approximately 400 during the summertime . The payment for the panels is $204 a month. Solar max did NOT sell me a system based on my needs, they sold me a system based on what they could get me financed for. I have asked SOLAR MAX multiple times to help me understand why I'm paying such a high electric bill. when I had purchased 21 panels, which according to them was 110% of my total usage the year prior. After putting the pieces together I figured out that Edison charges me an additional $0.30 per kw/h because of my solar and they only need to give me back 25% for free. Most of the power I generate, they sell back to me for almost twice the rate prior to me getting solar panels. Only way to offset the extra expense is to purchase a battery pack or 2. There are a lot of solar companies in California, and it's very hard to know which companies will actually do a good job, and actually stick around to serve you. After learning and seeing what some companies offered, I decided to go with SolarMax. I started the process with SolarMax in late August 2019, and the system turned on in mid-October. The expected project time was 2 months, but there was a delay caused by Southern California Edison, which is understandable. The process went smoothly, the company contacted me via phone and email to keep me updated on project status and milestones so I never felt like I was in the dark. The installations took two days. I have a pretty large system, on a two story home, so that was pretty impressive. The first day took about 4 or 5 hours for the roofing work, and the second day took about the same as well. Inspection happened within a week, as well as the Edison inspection as well. My system has been up and running for a few months now, and I've been monitoring it closely, and the system has been performing better than what SolarMax has projected. I am pretty excited to see how the system will perform during the summer time. Previously my summer bills ranged from $600-$700, and I am projecting that bill (from my system's performance) to drop down to less than $30! So excited! read more
