We got proposals from three local solar companies. All were reputable companies and they provided similar proposals, but we found that HPM had the most realistic proposal. For example, they did not push us to cut back trees to reduce shade and they used the most conservative payback estimation method. Once we accepted the proposal (in mid October 2024), it took about two months for our turn for installation, given that they were busy with projects around the end of the year. Once they were able to start our project, they completed installation and setup very quickly -- all within 3 days. The installation crew was very detail-oriented, and they adjusted the plans to reduce the amount of visible conduit by using our crawl space, which was extra work for them. After installation, the fire inspection was quick. The City of Claremont inspection was slow due to the City being understaffed and also end of year holiday breaks. The City asked for a few additional steps, including things that seemed unrelated. I learned this is standard when you do any home updates: you have to update other unrelated items to meet current codes. HPM took care of everything as part of the original price. We have a small system (11 panels and 2 batteries). It has been up and running for about two months, and we are very pleased with the performance. That was years ago and HPM did an outstanding job. My SCE yearly bill, after the initial system was close to $2000. After HPM solar put on additional panels, it is now $800 and has been for many years. Recently, I needed a new roof. It seemed having solar complicated the lift-and-lay needed. After our first solar system in Riverside in 2017, we chose HPM Solar a second time (after getting several bids) to install solar with battery for our new place in Pasadena. Once again, they were knowledgable, not pushy, flexible and effective during the 2021 install. Originally they recommended removing roof tiles to place the panels, but they adjusted in mid-installation when it became clear that our roof tiles were robust enough for an over-tile installation. We added the battery partway through the installation, which caused some complications with the permit with LA County (who are glacially slow, though friendly in person), and HPM stuck with us through the process. During installation, they stopped half-way through the electrical install and restarted from the beginning to get the cable management to be professional and clean. The new system has worked reliably, including turnover to battery during some brief power outages during the January 2025 windstorm. We also heard some thumping on the roof during the windstorm in January 2025, and were afraid it might be solar panels. I reached out to HPM, and with a week (at a busy time), they sent a technician by. He not only inspected the whole system, and found and repaired the loose mounting, but also reset some loose tiles on our roof and recommended we have a roofer check it. They did charge for this service call, but after 3 years and a physical emergency, that seemed fair enough. What I most valued in 2017 and in 2021 was that HPM Solar worked patiently and carefully through options, technical specifications, and installation details, going back to correct things that weren't right the first time in each phase. They may not seem as inexpensive as the big outfits or the back-of-a-truck installers, but they hit the sweet spot for balancing quality with flexibility. read more

This company is amazing. From the first phone call to the completion of the work they were very professional, mindful, and went above and beyond to get my solar done. Even when the city and the utility was holding up the job, they did everything they could to get them to hold up their end, phone calls and even going in person. Even after the job was done and HPM was paid, when the utility took forever to approve my pto they were constantly emailing and calling the schedulers and engineers at the utility. Also HPM used superior equipment/parts and their price was a fraction of the other big companies. Thats on the purchase side, the big companies push the lease/power purchase agreement which if you do the math is a total rip off. I even had extra things installed like a generator transfer switch and a plug they gave me an excellent price. Josh took care of everything on our job and still answers all of my questions. We made an appointment and met with Dan Moncayo, the owner. We found him to be knowledgeable and very personable. The project was completed within the time frame that was quoted. On 11-01-2024 we went on line with our solar unit. We feel great about utilizing a renewable resource and not paying the utility company. It was difficult for us to find a solar company that was able (or willing) to install on our metal shake roof due to the complexity of the install.
