I will title this review, when Honesty, Integrity and Skill Meet!! We had our chimney cleaned and after that work we had a roof leak during a rainstorm, so I contacted 3 roof contractors and told them the history of the possible damage and the following took place. First company arrives in a Tesla and then uses my ladder to climb into the attic and reports we have to have a moisture test with various monitors for possible mold and then we will have our lab provide a 16-page report.... $970. Question how much to repair the leak? We will not give a quote until you pay the $975. Thanks, and bye. Number 2, another Tesla and this fellow walks around the lawn and says we will replace the cap around the chimney box. $3500, Thanks, and bye. Number 3, Walks the roof, inspects the attic for leak and reports we must remove 4 solar panels, replace 500 square feet of plywood and replace the shingles, the damage was caused by the solar installation and with a senior discount, $8,750. Keep in mind the roof has not leaked after the solar was installed, 11 years ago. Mr. Joe installed our solar and no one will move our system but he and his crew. We call Mr. Joe, his crew arrive in a work truck with ladders, inspects the attic and finds no excessive water damage to the plywood, removes the chimney box lid, climbs inside to inspect and reports, replace the cap and you are good to go or use some sealant and flex seal first and review the results. THAT IS HONESTY, INTEGRITY AND SKILL!!! We have known Joe for 11 years and we are grateful we located he and his company and you will be too! read more

Choosing Solargem was one of the best decisions I have made in a long time! Joe is informative, honest, and kind - and I couldn't recommend his business any more! I decided to go solar because our house is on the larger side and has 2 AC units. In the summer our electric bill was as high as $650, which for a family of two was insane. I decided to get several quotes on solar installation in order to make sure I got the most bang for my buck. During this process, Joe was very transparent about his pricing, which was important to me as price was a big factor for me. He gave me multiple options that influenced pricing vs output, and this was extremely helpful. We ended up settling on 34 Solaria panels, which would end up producing slightly more energy than we needed at the time and would give us enough room to expand in the future if needed. In the limbo phase between him giving us a quote and us choosing a company, Joe wasn't pushy at all - which we appreciated. While Solargem ended up being one of the cheaper options out of the roughly 8 companies I got quotes from, I mostly chose them because Joe gave me a very good gut feeling. The few times that I talked with Joe and got panel/panel size advice prior to choosing his company, I felt like I could honestly trust him - and that was huge for me. After finalizing the contract + $$$, we hit the ground running. He sent one of his workers to do some prep on our house (moving exhaust pipes in our attic/roof) and then scheduled the panel installation shortly thereafter. His crew were extremely professional, courteous, and did a phenomenal job on the installation. We were also impressed that the inverter that they installed (SolarEdge) had a cool little app that showed how much energy we were producing (and of course I looked at it every day in excitement). After our first full month of having the panels up (and our new time of use plan kicking in with SCE), I was pleased that our usage was $0!! While we still had to pay a very small service fee to Edison (~$20), I was happy that we were already starting to get a return on our investment (in November too!). After looking at several solar contractors, I selected SolarGem and am very happy about my decision. SolarGem clearly stated what they would do during our initial consultation and later in writing via the detailed proposal. My original contact with the owner, Joe Johnson, was very helpful as he was able to provide me with answers to all my questions. The pricing was right in line with other companies I looked at and the equipment they offered was top quality US made panels. The crew showed up on time each day and finished the job on time to my complete satisfaction. They were very professional and left my house clean at the end of each shift. I began my research into solar back in Aug 2015, after finding out what I exactly wanted and what kind of system I wanted to build I called around for a few quotes. Joe from SolarGem being one of the 6 quotes I got. While I didn't buy my equipment from Joe, they did the install on my system. From beginning to end, Joe and his team were very professional. We started our install on a Monday and Thursday, the system was up. By Friday, everything has wrapped up and inspection was complete waiting for SCE to give us the OK to operate. We also had SolarGem upgrade our service panel since our original one didn't meet the min requirement for solar and Joe gave us a very reasonable price for the upgrade. They also did everything to our discussed contract and at the end of the day, we were very satisfied with the job Joe and his team did. On a last note, one of the great thing that Joe and his team does that we appreciated very much was the daily updates. Since I was at work for the most of this installation. Joe called me every day after his team left to give me an update on what has happened and what to expect next. This we valued a lot since knowing what is going on and to expect goes a long way in customer service. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Joe to anyone looking to install Solar. Joe also gave me some excellent advance along the way which help in the build of our system. There's nothing bad we can say about solarGem . They're very professional and very good at what they do. We've had the system for almost a year. My A/C is always ON(we never turn it off) and our T.V. is ON all day, alone with a few lights. Our house have very few Windows and the ones we do have are on the north side of the house. So very little light from the sun. We only have the bill for the solar panels itself but no electric bill. Once we finish paying for the solar panels itself(we decide on the 5 yr plan). As long as we live in this house, we'll NEVER have an electric bill. We highly recommend solarGem. read more

******For a get-to-the-point summary, skip to the bottom of this long review****** With the price of electricity on the rise, there are many people looking for solar panels. There are solar companies inside the do-it-yourself stores and there are those who sell on their own (through advertising). Some don't advertise at all and earn their reputation by referral or by ratings (such as Yelp). The latter is Solar Gem and Joe Johnson. As previous reviewers have mentioned Joe and his team are amazing! I started Summer 2016 looking for solar installation. A co-worker bragged about her system and how she was saving money on her electric bill just under one year of use. This prompted me to look into my own solar power system as my utility company seems to be raising rates all the time! So I started calling around...my rule for any house project is simple, get at least three bids!!! By July I obtained my three bids...interestingly my bids were: 1. via email 2. over the phone with daily phone calls and constant price discounts (lasted about five days) 3. and by a company who made an appointment and showed up on that day The first company sent an offer via email and I never heard from them again. The second company would not send a person out to survey the property unless I verbally would agree to working with them on a "fair price." The third company, which was Solar Gem, scheduled a date to stop by and kept their promise. This was the first time I met Joe Johnson. He came prepared with panel samples, had a nice presentation portfolio, and was ready to take measurements to propose a bid. Joe's presentation was just the right length of time...I believe it was about 20 - 30 minutes and the conversation was filled with options on a solar power system, no sales tactics or pressure to buy. In fact, I knew which brand of solar panels and power optimizing system I wanted for the install, and Joe said no problem. He offered American made panels and even other manufacturers such as LG (which was the brand I chose). After his visit, Joe created a proposal which arrived via email about one week later. After reviewing the bids, I was able to determine that Solar Gem was in the middle. I opted to go with Solar Gem because Joe and his team addressed my needs right from the beginning, paying attention to the way I wanted to design my solar power system and not having an issue installing equipment I chose. Getting back to my story, I signed a contract with Solar Gem and scheduled an appointment to do the install. Approximately two weeks into August, around 8 am one morning, his team showed up. They immediately got to work on installing the frame that would hold up the panels, located above our garage. After a little bit of work, a truck showed up with my LG panels! They unloaded the panels and installed the mounts on them. Then, one by one, they started hoisting them onto the roof until all of my 16 panels were installed. Joe thought it would take one or two days. The Solar Gem guys were done in about 6 hours!! I was very impressed...the panels were well mounted with no wires dangling over the side of the house or running along side...I consider that a no no in solar install etiquette! Joe Johnson and his team went from the roof, into my attic, and out the side to the solar meter...very professional! The guys cleaned up the area and their mess every step of the way. By the time there were finished, they used a blower to clean up the area again! They also hauled away their trash...nice! Finally, Joe pulled all of the necessary permits and had a team member present during the final city inspection! There was an issue with one of the proposed drawings, but the city inspector stated it was not Solar Gem's fault, but rather a piece of equipment the city requires and wanted Solar Gem to fix in the plans. Joe was quick in making the change and about two weeks later we were approved to run our solar unit! Our city was nice enough to run a rebate program and Joe was there every step of the way to insure we maintained eligibility for the rebate. It's been almost five months now and our electric bill has gone way done to almost nothing! We hope to achieve better savings in the Summer once we get the AC going. Incidentally, we created our system where we are only 85% efficient...so why only 85? I explained to Joe that my wife didn't like the look of solar panels on the roof and she wanted them out of sight from the street. Working with Joe, I was able to place the panels out-of-sight and we were both happy! Even after the install, I have kept in touch with Joe because Solar Gem offers panel washing and troubleshooting. We found them to be very price competitive, the quality of their installation seems very good, there were no surprises, they came when they said they would and completed the job in the time they said they would, and there were no extras. Furthermore they went the extra mile on repairing tiles and getting everything looking good. After contacting SolarGem (I was referred by an ex-coworker) the owner Joe Johnson came out to look at my house and give me a quote. After getting several quotes from other providers, none could match the price point of SolarGem. They all had excuses why theirs were higher and kept calling even after I told them no trying to get me to change my mind by lowering the price. Why not just give an honest quote to begin with instead of trying to high ball the customer then try to make them feel like you are doing them a favor by lowering the price. Joe came out and gave the lowest bid right off the bat and told me to think about it and let him know. He never called to bother me and only contacted me when I would call him. I had him set to install my system but at the last minute I changed my mind and wanted to go a different route. I wanted the panels on only the back portion of my roof and not split up onto different parts of the roof. I ended up purchasing 20 345 watt panels instead of 24 285 watt panels but ended up with a larger 6.9kWh system. While they were doing by solar I also had them redo all my existing fascia boards. I couldn't be more happier with the work they performed. Once the system was up and running my first month of solar usage was a -254kWh with a bill of -$31. The only thing you still have to pay are the tax and transmission fee from Edison which came to $8.88. With the rollover of energy I can use my air conditioner all the time now. Do yourself a favor and call Joe at SolarGem if you are seriously looking at getting solar installed. Plus all parts are american made. read more

Solar Gem was recommended to me by Competition Roofing as a very professional company who would give me a better price than any of those big box solar-advertising companies. I completely agree. Almost my entire family had gotten solar panels, so I have their anecdotes. Other than that, I didn't know much of anything about solar panels and I hadn't done much research. So when I met Joe Johnson I was thinking that I would have to ask a thousand questions. Well I didn't because Joe jumped in and told me all about it (solar and the Federal rebate program), leaving only a few questions for me. After weighing the cost of the roof and solar panels, I came to the conclusion that the Federal 30% tax rebate program was too good to pass up. Joe worked with Bob of Competition Roofing to coordinate their work (I didn't have to do that!) and in one week both were done. I am still amazed and how quickly the solar panels and the new electrical panel were installed. And both are really beautiful. After Joe turned on the solar panels he showed me how the new electrical meter was running backward, a fun thing to see! It is now one year after installation. There have been no problems whatsoever with the system. Joe designed it to give a net electric bill of zero. We are going to owe Edison about $50 for the YEAR! That's awfully close to zero. I looked at daily usage. The system generates enough energy even on the shortest day of the year on sunny days to cover the entire 24 hour period. Of course it also depends on the weather, the more cloudy days, the less your system generates. If you're in the market for solar, read the other reviews and then give Joe a call.
