The spa is under new management with a complete change in staff. It is now run by Cindy who I have been a customer of for over 10 years. I have never had such meticulous, and professional care. She is expert in everything she does. She does my gel manicures, pedicures and eyelashes. It is the eyelashes that truly set her apart. This place used to be called "Nail Spa by Time." I'm assuming it was a branch of the nail spa of the exact same name further down Huntington near Brigham Circle but now it is called Solar Nails. Whatever the case is (I'm assuming new management), I used to be a regular and now I am not. I've been going to this location for 2-3 years and have generally been satisfied with the service. However, I came here again several months ago to get my nails done for the summer and had a horrible experience. They hired new staff - the lady who did my nails was one of them and she was awful. She was extremely rough cleaning my nails and cut my cuticles without even looking at my hands. Obviously this was painful and when I asked if she could be more gentle, all she did was look up and grin at me. When she finally caused my cuticle to bleed, she poured alcohol on it without saying a word to me. No apology, no warning of "I'm going to sterilize your cut, this is gonna hurt like a mother--." I had gone there initially for a mani-pedi but after the awful pedicure, I decided not to have the manicure. When I told her, she responded, "awww why not?" and tried to convince me to change my mind. No, just no and never again. I feel bad for giving such an awful review but until they improve the way they treat their customers, especially as this is a personal care service, I will NOT be returning. read more

My friend goes here all the time and she swears by this place so I figured I would try it out. I got a gel manicure and a regular pedicure for $54. My pedi was okay, the base that you put your feet in was broken so my feet were sitting in semi cold water the whole time (she didn't warm it up at all). And they also don't have foot files they have these hard sponges instead which was also different. When she started painting my toenails she wasn't painting the whole toenail and I had to have her fill in the sides. When she did my nails she put something called OPI bond aid on and when I put my nails under the UV light my physical nails felt like they were burning. I don't know if it was because I haven't gotten gel nails in a long time but that's never happened to me before. I also got white nails (they don't have a ton of color selection) and it was very sheer even after 3 coats, on top of that there were like little air bubbles on almost every nail which was really frustrating because by the time I realized she had already done 2 coats for each nail and I had been there over an hour and didn't want to ask her to redo it all. She also poured acetone directly on my nails when I had cuts instead of putting it on a cotton pad. When I got home I also realized that she didn't fully paint each nail properly. For most of them she didn't paint the side of the nail. Overall not the worst experience I've ever had but I will definitely not be going back there ever again. read more

The service was fine but these women are starving for money, to the point where they are out here SCAMMING. I wanted to get my eyebrows waxed and was expecting to pay $10-15, first red flag is when she changed the subject when I asked for the price and second red flag is when she swiped my credit card without telling me the price/asking for my consent. She charged me $25 for a simple basic eyebrow wax. I asked her about it and she had the AUDACITY to lie to my face and say that's what all the salon is charging, but immediately panicked when I took a photo of the salon, telling me they would give my money back. Mostly I go here for the waxing (eyebrows, upper lip and a brazilian bikini wax) but I do get manicures occasionally. The prices are great and the woman who does the waxing is fantastic. My eyebrows are kinda weird one is higher on my face than the other and most try to "fix" them. It never works and I always come out looking worse. Not true here and she doesn't make them too thin which I have also had a problem with. She is meticulous and friendly. The manicures I have received here usually last about a week which is normal for me. I get just a solid color and it is twelve bucks. I never make an appointment (shame on me) and they always fit me in fairly quickly. The only downside is that they don't take tips are cash only. "0" STARS The place to go if you want to get whatever they want to give you! In my 20+ years of getting my nails done, I have never had such an experience. I called at 4:30pm on a Saturday to see what time they closed and to see if they had anyone who could do "PINK AND WHITE POWDER NAILS" or better known as SOLAR NAILS because they are only 1 of 2 places I have found in Boston who does them . I was told "Yes," & that I should come at 5:30pm. When I got there, at 5:30 exactly, I told them I had called for pink & white powder nails and I was told to come in at 5:30pm. I sat around awkwardly for 30 min as they all continued to look at me and speak so I could not understand them. Finally, one of the ladies came over to start working on my nails. She began to saw away at a 45 degree angle on my nails ... painfully digging into and burning my nails. It was obvious that she was not happy. I was trying to distract myself with my phone when I looked up as she was applying the pink powder to my 3rd nail when I noticed that she kept re dipping the brush in the powder and she was applying it rather thick just along the sides and around my cuticles...the powder was still very wet and it was running over my cuticles. After getting Solar Nails for at least 20 years, at this point it is clear that she has never done this because she has no intentions of filing down the area where she needs to fill in the tips with the white powder. So I inquire if she is going to do the white powder tips and she says, "Yes" and mumbles something about gel. I told her, "No. I didn't ask for gel. I want powder." At which point she stops & begins to act like she's picking up and says,"I can stop." I told her, "No. You have already sawed my finger nails down. I want the white powder refill." She tells me okay, but proceeds to do her thing... She tells me that she's doing solar nails & there is only 1 way to do them (which is NOT true). I told her that I had them done there a few weeks ago by another lady who did not do them this way. At which point she insists that SHE did them for me (SHE DID NOT) and that the only way she could do white powder is if I got a new set!!? She continued to do her thing and Ta-Da... she painted my tips with white gel. She finishes THEN tells me that I came in at 5:30 and that is too late to get my nails done and that she didn't want to do them but the other lady told her that I had an appointment so that is why she did the pink refill with the gel. She also proceeded to tell me that she can give me the name of the lady who does pink & white powder so I can call next time because she doesn't do pink & white powder!!!!!????? SERIOUSLY!!!? asked for "her" name and she responded, "You don't need my name. Why do you want my name?" I told her because she was the one who I told what I wanted and decided to do what she wanted while trying to deceive me the whole time. She told me, "Your nails look good." I told her I could have went back to Cambridge to get what I asked for IF she had told me that she didn't know how to do them when I got there because the first time that I wash my red dyed hair my white GEL tips were going to turn PINK!" Her response, "Oh." She continued to refuse to tell me her name but offered to give me a discount the NEXT time I got my nails done. When I asked her to give me the discount today since today was the day she did not give me what I asked for, she said, "No." I am not typically one to complain, life is too short to waste precious time on typing a novel ... I usually try to be the better person and over tip someone when they have obviously had a bad day (i.e. rude people), but this experience was just over and beyond my limit. read more

I had one good and one bad experience here for pedicures - really depends who you get. This last time was so bad I felt the need to write in. The whole thing took an hour and a half and she killed my toes - cut the nails way too short and spent too much time picking at them so that they are still sore the next day! Someone else took over in between who did a much more standard job so this person was clearly new but didn't understand a thing I was saying, even when I said it hurt! I would not go back to this person, and will be looking for a new place. Polish change here is fine, and they do give a good leg/foot massage but this pedi experience was just awful. read more

I have been here a total of 3 times. The first time, I was pretty satisfied with my gel manicure. So I came back for a second. While the woman was doing my nails I pointed out that a couple of them looked like the gel Polish was smudging. She ignores me and continues to polish them and by the time she was finished they were ok but still not smooth as a gel manicure should be. I left the salon and noticed that they were much worse so I came back after work and showed the woman. She was very rude. Did not speak to me but continued to chat away on speaker phone with someone else and pointed at a chair for me to sit in. I sat down and she starts filing my nails to remove the polish and blatantly scrapes the skin on my finger with the file!!! I got a "gel fill" last week, not only did it not last a week, it was horrific!! Gel fills from normal salons, the nail polish will never chip due to the over coat. Mine chipped within 4 days and 3 nails are already broken. Also, they lady doing my pedicure (which is why it would be 1 star or else i would maybe give it 1/2 since the pedicure was good), was talking to about me in her language and made it completely obvious because I quickly took a phone call. I will be going to my old nail salon (an hour away) tomorrow to hopefully get a fill, if not a new set because they are that bad! read more

Very nice staff, but I would not recommend. I got a pedicure and gel manicure there last week for $54. While the woman was doing my nails, she cut my finger, so I was still bleeding when I left. She was very nice about it, and put on antiseptic for me. I asked for my nails to be filed square, but they're almost indented in the middle and some weren't filed correctly, so I had to fix them when I got home. After four days, one nail's polish chipped half off, before my friend's regular manicure even did. After one week, most of my nails have begun chipping. For the price of a gel manicure, I expect it to last significantly longer than regular polish. I would not recommend this nail salon and I will not be returning. read more

I've been going to this Salon for about 5 years and have NEVER been disappointed. I can call in about 20 minutes before I want an appointment (I'm not so good at planning ahead all the time:) and they are gracious and fit me in with no problem. I've been getting the Gel for my nails and Lan does an EXCELLENT job. My nails look great for about 2 weeks. I get so many compliments on them. I also get waxing (eyebrows, sideburns) and pedicures and am never disappointed with quality of service. Solar Nails is the only salon I will ever go to. I always see Henry for my gel manicures every month, and they always last until my next visit! Unless I break my nail at work, my manicure will not chip or peel (which I find is more common than chipping with gel) for literally three weeks. I end up going in to get them redone just because my nails get too long, but the previous mani is still flawless. Henry always gives me four, yes, FOUR coats of colour because he knows that I like that. They take their time at Solar Nails. I've been to salons where I felt like they were just trying to do my nails as fast as possible so that they could move on to the next person, and then my nails end up chipping in a few days. That is not the case at Solar Nails. If you go here, know that they will take their time. If you can't afford to set aside an hour, then by all means, go to a quick and dirty place and enjoy seeing your nails chip in a week. I have never had any issues with cleanliness at Solar Nails either, whether it be with my manis or pedis. I have never left with bleeding cuticles either. Prices are reasonable as well, especially for how much time they invest on their clients. As far as making an appointment goes, I honestly never do. I do call ahead to make sure Henry will be working of course, but other than that, I just come in during the day and get helped right away. If you come in during rush hour, you're obviously going to have to wait a while. That's just common sense. Like I said, they take their time here. Personally, I like that they don't rush through my mani just because someone is waiting. I know an eyebrow place I used to go to that did that, but that's beside the point. I should have known this place wasn't good when I came in and it was empty. I ask for a gel manicure and the lady asked me twice if I wanted a pedi. Puh-leeeease, if I wanted one I would ask. Then I asked if they do waxing and she said yeah, wanna do your mustache? Puh-leeeease, I wanted my underarm and quite frankly, didn't even think my upper lip was bad. So after the SHIT manicure, I got a wax and in the waxing room, (after she viciously ripped my armpit hair and all the skin off with it), she asked again if I wanted to do my upper lip. OH THEN MY UNDERARMS BURNED FOR 30 HOURS. They were red and raw. The wax thye use was probably recycled because it was not that clean looking. Seriously the place is dirty, the workers are rude and they just want your money so they can buy more crappy supplies. The gel nails have bubbles in it and it looks like they were dipped in acid. they look disgusting I could have just asked my dog to do my nails tbh. I knew from the second I walked in that it would be a sh*tshow but I went with it and I don't live to regret it every second of my existence but whenever I look at my nails, I wanna barf and everytime I move my arm, I need to cultivate an aloe plant to soothe the mess this woman made. I live in the neighborhood and have been using this place occasionally because they are so near by. Theyve been alright. The nails are done Ok mostly but ocassionally well. But recently the staff has been horrible. The owner/manager did my nails this week and the experience was so bad I'm done with this place despite the proximity. First she dipped my hand in scalding water and then left me with some cuticle softener on my nails for 15 mins. Then she does my nails and after removing dead skin asks me to wash my hands in the dingy bathroom which i found quite strange (usually there is a clean bowl of water or just a towel wipe to do that part). Then she goes on and on about why I should get a bikini wax (which Ive already told her I don't want). And then she crosses all limits by making weird comments like "only your husband need know this etc) at which point I was infuriated. The nail is done and its 1hr 20 mins since I came. I just wanted to leave so asked for the quick dry to be put on my nail. Then for the charge -- I didn't have cash that day. Just $3 in tip. So I offer card and she says if I pay by card I will be charged $20. My eyes almost popped out at this comment. For a $12 service she was asking a surcharge of almost 100%. I said I would bring back cash the next day as she knows I live close by. I told her I was traveling that day but will try to drop off the money in the morning. At this point she tries to make up for her weird behavior and says its alright if I bring the money when I get back from my trip. I have paid for her service in cash and now I am never ever EVER going back there! And would like to know if I can lodge a complaint with a consumer action forum about the whole episode. read more

My friend and I went yesterday. I had a very good manicure and pedicure. The only problem was the customer service my friend received--not what we expected at all. When my friend came in she asked for nail tips and pedicure. My friend loved the pedicure, but when the person was going to take care of her hands, the person told her no tips. We understand that the time to tell her should have been when she asked for it in the first place. Due to their mistake, my friend suggested as a first option having a shelac or gel for the same price or as a second option, a $8 discount on her pedicure, knowing that this is what probably will cost her to go to another nail salon for a polish change, so she can have her hand and feet nails of the same color. After a long wait and very uncomfortable situation for us, my friend finally received a $6 discount. What a shame for this business! They have lost two clients, who would have probably be permanent ones, just for not honoring a simple and fair request due to their mistake. So sad! read more
