Father's Day 6/18/23 - First time here. 5 adults. 1 child. Co workers really talk this place up. Where do I begin....................................................... ***I broke my own Cardinal Rule: Never eat out the day of a Holiday!*** 1. No menus were handed to us. we were told to go online. Waiter and waitress never introduced themselves. 2. After being asked my drink order, I ordered a Coke. it was the only drink I received and I was never given a refill or asked if I wanted another drink DURING THE ENTIRE MEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What Portugese restaurant does not even ask if you want Sangria!!!!!!!!!!! (The easiest moneymaker at any Iberian restaurant) 3. Waiter asked if we wanted to start with appetizers. We ordered 2 orders of fried calamari. I swear to JESUS CHRIST they came out in less than 5 minutes. (since when!?!?!?!) I am 49 years old and have eaten in many restaurants and this is the first calamari I have ever received MIXED with CORN, DICED TOMATOES, DICED ONION AND DICED JALEPENOS. Besides the fact they tasted like a dry rotted rubber band. The calamari was mixed in this manner to mask the fact that the calamari was pre-cooked, probably last week, and served as a Father's Day special. 4. Everyone ordered Rodizio and I got Seafood Paella. It came to the table less than 10min. (NOTE: if you ever eat at a Portugese restaurant, the paella never takes less than 10min. Again do not eat at restaurants on a holiday. My paella came out and it was just warmed over rice and fish. It was not made to order. It was made in bulk at an earlier time during the day (hopefully Not last week) The seafood that was in the rice was RUBBER. I'm sure if I put the shrimp on my car, I could get 60,000 miles out of them. 5. I still have not been asked for a refill or if I need another drink. 6. Dessert: Everyone ordered dessert. I ordered flan for myself and chocolate cake for my daughter (3 years old) . Waitress brings out the desserts. "We are out of flan" (this is 2pm in the afternoon). Chocolate cake was stale. 7. Still no refills! 8. Waiter was nice and asked my daughter if she wanted milk with her chocolate cake. Very nice of him. He brings out milk and it's room temp. I stopped here after my favorite rodizio spot down neck was closed. I've been here once before about 8 years ago and enjoyed it. A few weeks ago we went to Brasilia and the food was extremely subpar. Solar Do Minho definitely hit the spot. Outside of my regular spot they certainly have the best rodizio. I'd be back in a heartbeat. Was here on a Saturday with a total of seven people. Very accommodating in moving reservation from 6:30 to 7:30 since we ran into a delay. Seated very quickly when we arrived at one of the outdoor tables. Servers seem to be hard to come by as our main issue was trying to get water (a pitcher would have been preferred and oddly water glasses were removed from everyone having sangria). The food was fantastic! The Portuguese rolls were amazing and even my non-bread rather enjoyed one. We skipped appetizers, and considering the entree portion sizes that was a good call. Plates ordered were Mariscada em Molho Verde, Filetes de Pargo em Molho Champagne (x2), Filetes de Linguado Recheados em Molho Mariscos, Vitela à Estoril, Arroz de Frango à Melgaço & Rodizio. All meals came with a plate of rice (Rodizio also had a bowl of black beans). It took a little while for the food to arrive (understandable) but after everyone was served there was about a ten minute delay before anyone stopped at the table for the Rodizio (other tables were being offered meats, then passed ours to head back inside). Granted once it started it was pretty fast paced, but having started after everyone else they were done first and left me felling a little rushed (though I think the sangria helped keep them occupied) Everyone enjoyed their meals and the variety of the Rodizio was very good. The pork was the only negative (very dry) but the others were very good (sausage, multiple cuts of beef, chicken, lamb, chicken hearts, short ribs and I'm sure I'm missing something). The complaints about parking are somewhat true, but we had no issue finding two spaces a block away. Anyone that's frequented a downtown eatery should expect this. Pricing was reflective of the portion size and quality of the food and not bad considering. Almost forgot the strolling musicians. Quite amusing hearing "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" & Abba on violin, as well as other songs you wouldn't expect. read more

Takeaway: Great ambiance, mediocre food We came here for a family birthday dinner and were very excited to try their rodizio. It was our first time arriving and note that street parking is limited but they do offer valet, which is nice. We ordered the red Sangria pitcher and it was fantastic. Definitely recommend. As part of the Rodizio, we were served potatoes, salad, beans, rice and plantains. The sides were well prepared. As for the rodizio itself, the assortment and parade is great, but most of the meats were overcooked. You are able to tell your waiter how you like your meat prepared, but I don't think this makes a difference. A little disappointed in the rodizio but we still had a great time as the vibe is very fun and good service. Would go back, but would likely try an entree instead. read more

Not quite a 3, not quite a 4, but since I can't give a half star, I'm going with a little lower rating for a few reasons. Overall I would definitely go back and try more of their extensive menu, so here are the highlights: - HUGE place, with a large outdoor seating area. I would go back in the summer or fall to take advantage of some outdoor cocktails and apps. - Fun interior, but noisy. Do not go here if you're looking for romance and peaceful conversation. Great for big groups though; definitely make a reservation! - Garlic shrimp and calamari apps are AWESOME. I wish we got another round before moving on to the main courses. - The sides are served family style, and you definitely won't be short on that. We were a party of 6 and got 3 plates of rice/chips, 2 plates of fries, and 2 dishes of beans. I think it's based off what you order (rodizio vs. another dish) but all the sides were delish. - You're not allowed to "share" the rodizio with others who don't order it (which is BS in my opinion - if you want to share bites, you should be able to!) but I did sneak a few and what I had was great. - Large dessert menu, and you get to see everything before choosing. I loved this because it really set the expectation of size and shareability! Downfalls: - We felt like we were waited on by the whole restaurant. We had one guy seat us, another take the first drink order, 2 different gentleman refill waters, and no one ever came back to take a second drink order. And don't get started on the rodizio - there must've been 5 people who came around with those. - My non-rodizio dish was just OK. I think it may have actually been the wrong dish but I couldn't ask because no one came back to check on our meal. - The place was insanely packed; if there was an emergency, I have no idea how we would've all gotten out safely. Weaving around the tables and chairs (and the seemingly dozens of fast-paced, rodizio wielding waitstaff) was like a puzzle when trying to get to the bathroom. I was just happy that I didn't have to pee earlier in the night. - You don't feel like you're in a great part of town, and while there is street parking, I would suggest valet parking only. - My creme brulee was cold. Usually you get it warm-to-hot when served at a restaurant... crispy crunchy top with a warm treat underneath. I would say the first two bites were warm and then the center and most of the rest was cold. Seemed like they fired the top after taking it out of the fridge. Again - I would totally go again so I could enjoy more of the rodizio... and I would go with a little bit of a more casual mindset. Just keep that in mind! read more

I visited Solar Do Minho for my sister's 30th birthday amidst the COVID times. I called a few weeks ahead to book the table for 14, but because of social distancing guidelines they split it into two tables of 7, which was completely fine! We arrived before our reservation at 8, at around 7:30 and the tables were ready already! At first the tables were set up for 12, it being split into 6 and 6, but we were able to resolve it by putting a chair at the end if each table. We started off with the red sangria and passionfruit sangria. We eventually made our way to the blue sangria-- all were AMAZING and at a great price point! For appetizers we got the octopus. I've had octopus at similar restaurants and I did not enjoy this one. It was simply octopus and the paprika and salt didn't do much. I'd pass on the next time. My table solely got rodizio as our entree. Wow. Meat galore. We did wait some time for everything to come out-- Maybe about an hour and fifteen minutes. However by then we were pretty hammered and these marvelous meat sticks kept coming out and I kept saying yes to every possible meat that came out. Rookie mistake. I was in love with the garlic steak and roast beef. Just give me those and I'm fine with it! The waiters were very nice but could have been more attentive. They did do great though. Went there for a birthday dinner with the family. Parking was valet, which saved us some time. They were very accommodating of a large group with small children. The food was good but some of the meats from my dish were dry. Either they were the leftovers from the rodizio or reheated. When we took leftovers for a breakfast skillet my mother in law's dish was not packed with everything she didn't eat. For example she knows she didn't eat the chorizo and none was in her box. We have been coming here for years and this is one of our favorite spots. The food is always delicious and their Sangria is the best. The full pitcher is like a bottomless pit and it packs a punch so be careful. We came here recently for their outdoor dining and we were pleasantly surprised how nicely it was set up. All the tables were under beautiful tents which kept you protected in case it rained and the dining area was greatly increased from how it was normally. On this occasion we ordered the Bife de Lombo na Telha or Shell Steak served on a Portuguese Clay Roof Tile. This just never disappoints. Cooked to your liking and bathed in garlic butter, the meat is tender and delicious. We also had the Mariscada em Molho de Tomate, Lobster, Clams, Mussels, Shrimp and Scallops in a Tomato Sauce. This was just amazing and we created our own surf & turf having this with the steak. For dessert we finished with their delicious Pistachio Cheese Cake, one of our favorites. They also have private rooms for parties and large reservations. However, I held back one star for the parking. The restaurant is in an area with no access to easy parking. There is valet parking but the wait can be tremendously long with attendants looking for places to park cars. Don't let this stop you from experiencing an exciting adventure in food. We may have come here this past Valentines day which may have also been Ash Wednesday, and we may have sinned badly, but sinning never tasted so good! We made reservations for this place about a month ago, only realizing it was Ash Wednesday a day or 2 before, and it was 2 late to change plans. We could have gotten fish, but when their rodizio is that good, why not? Wife and i both got the rodizio, which we have both doen 10+ times in the past. It is always fantastic! I do miss the green red stopper ive gotten accustomed to from other places, but oh well! The place is very nice outside as well as in. There is valet parking which really helps in that area. In the summer, they have added seating in the parking lot under a tent. On very hot days, i do not recommend sitting there lol! Inside makes you feel like you are in a quaint villiage somewhere very far from where you really are. Decorations are spot on. Service is always fast and friendly. Felippe is super friendly! I do not think that we have ever had any issues here. We have tried coming for their other food, (forgive the spelling) pallilela, other steaks, fish, but the rodizio always stands out. Personally im not that big of a chicken or turkey guy, so i usually skip on those, or atleast try to! but bacon welcoms me back each time. I have come to Solar Do Minho a hand full of times with my family to celebrate special occasions. The food here is plentiful and abundant. So many various meat and seafood options, I have yet to try them all. Just know you're getting your money's worth - the portions are HUUUGE. Can't go wrong with Rodizio style - the servers with the stick featuring giant hunks of meat come around and serve you as much as you can stomach - grilled pineapple included. My boyfriend loved this option and ate to his hearts content. Of all the things I have tried, I highly recommend the following: - Gambas de Berlengas a Africana: The prawns are giant and the sauce is amazing! - Mariscos con Masa: Great assortment of seafood over plenty of pasta. They recommend the white sauce over the red, but I couldn't help myself and got the red. - Costeletas de Cabrito com Molho Pimenta Preta: Oh my lanta! First time here, the service and food was phenomenal! When ordering the rodizio It's so worth it! There such a variety of meats. And a lot of it so bring your appetite. It comes with black beans rice fried bananas and French fries. You can order refills of the sides but you probably won't need to. The meats were so tender and flavorful you can choose the temperature you would like it as well. When finished with dinner you are served with pineapple tossed in cinnamon. Got in on a Friday night because I saw the 4 star rating on Yelp. Thought it would be a nice one but what a disappointment. Never again. The parking is a nightmare but found valet, which is complementary. Got seated pretty quick and selected rodizio from the menu. Let me tell you, I waited for the meat to come and worse my server was nowhere to be seen. Once the meet showed up after about 40 minutes. They disappeared again. I asked for lamb and that never showed up. I went in at 7:30, by 9:10 only one round of meet had shown up. I was out of my drink and my server, Tito had to be tracked down to get me another. My husband and I went for the rodizio last night and their quality has definitely changed (not for the better). The quality of the meat isn't the same at all. We used to love coming here but I'm not sure if maybe COVID has them cutting costs? The sangria was still on point though! & the waitstaff is very attentive. A meat lover's paradise! I've eaten here twice. Once for a date night with the wife and the other as a family outing. Both times, the food was sensational. Appetizers that I've tried include the garlic shrimp & bacalao fritters. Both items tasted incredible. Great intense flavor, which I love. My nitpick is that the portions were a tad bit on the small side. This concern was decimated however with how satisfying the main courses are. For entrees, I've tried the churrasco skirt steak that is brought to you on a roof tile and then smothered in their garlic butter. Just the aroma that comes off that steak when they're smothering it in the butter is enough to make you melt faster than the butter on your steak. What a great flavor on the steak!!! It was cooked as requested, which was a perfect mid-rare. The other entree, or should I say main event because that's what it felt like, was the rodizio option. My goodness! I wish I was maybe ten years younger to be able to last longer and eat more. This rodizio is fantastic. The meat options are aplenty... Picanha, bone-in roast chicken, ribeye steak, ham, lamb, roast beef, short ribs, & churrasco if I remember them all correctly. Each meat is its own shining star honestly. The flavors were on point and cooked to perfection. They do ask you for your preference of meat temperature. Be sure to feel comfortable with ordering your actual made to order preference because these guys know what they're doing. As far as drinks are concerned, try their caipirinha. It's strong but flavorful. They also offer different flavors for that drink so be sure to ask your server if they'll make you one that suites your flavor preference. I've tried the traditional one, mango, and guava. The mango was the best in my opinion. The guava flavor was lacking to be honest. So, I did have to ding them one star. Aside from this negative, they'd honestly be a five star place. So here it is. The table service is okay. It wasn't bad, but there was definitely no "going the extra mile" type of service. Our servers on both occasions just kinda felt like they were going through the motions. As far as rodizio service is concerned, the pace that they brought out the meat was good. I prefer a slower pace now because I'm older and want to pace myself so that I don't get prematurely full. Remember you're paying a pretty hefty price tag for it. What was a bit off-putting to me, was that I had to ask three different servers on three different occasions, to bring me some churrasco. When it finally did come out, all was well, as I just asked the guy to literally just leave the entire sword there on my plate and I got a heaping full-size steak portion. The guy thought I was kidding, but he saw I wasn't joking and gladly obliged with a smile on his face. The fact that I had to ask 3 times was what rubbed me wrong. I almost felt like they purposely don't being out skirt steak and then try to fill you with the other non premium meats like the roast beef and the ham. They repeated those meats a lot which got on my nerves and again, I'm paying a high price tag, so give me what I am paying for. The go around on this is to just stay the course, keep requesting it, and be selective with repeated meats. Try them once but move on. They weren't stingy with the picanha and this kinda helped with the lack of skirt steak, but all in all, a very satisfying dining experience. I highly recommend this for meat and seafood lovers. SIDE TIP: The parking situation is horrendous. They're in an awful location off a narrow side street behind an apartment complex and railroad crossing, with no parking lot. My suggestion is if you're going on a Saturday evening, arrive early for an early dinner like around 4ish and utilize the valet because the place gets jam packed during peak dinner hours. The headache of finding parking yourself would be enough to deter you from eating there, but the valet option is much appreciated. read more

So I asked for skirt steak I waiting about 20 minutes until I got frustrated told Them about there service and got The check . Then I decided to go back there on New Year's Eve . I usually go to Fernandez steakhouse as well in Newark but I decided to give this place another try . I invited my two girlfriends out for dinner at around 3:30 pm . So it wasn't even busy !!!! We get there order rodgio . They do bring out the rice and bananas Fast . So that was goood . Then they came around with the rodigio I would say a good amount Of times maybe like 6 times . Then all of a sudden it stopped ! They kept bringing meat out and walking straight past us like we didn't exist ! So we waited from about 5:32 till 6:07 and still nothing . My friend had to ask the waiter where the Rodigio was and he asked . What would you like next ? And she says "steak "" . They wanted us to tell them what we wanted next so they can just bring that out and nothing else . It seemed like they wanted us to leave since several different waiters kept stopping and asking us if we were finished to take our plates and we said no . The waiter said the guy is coming then waited another 15 minutes and nothing . About 10 minutes after that they came and at that point the fun was taken away from the whole experience . We were ignored rushed out and they didn't want to serve us at one point and kept trying to take our plates . To be honest the meat was 100 percent not fresh and it seemed like it was sitting out for a couple days it had no flavor except for The lamb and cheesesteak . I hate being mean to restaurants and talking down but honestly they need to change there game there. Keep coming around with the food until someone tells you there done ! That is just the way rodigio works ! The manager / owner not sure who he was seemed like he listened not sure if he cared since he then only took my plate off the bill and not my other friend I was with , when we both had the same Experience lol .
