Tripe Stew
Oi W.

11/1/25 We had just come from getting our car serviced so we were starving and got here not long after they opened on a Saturday morning. There weren't many people, we practically had the whole restaurant to ourselves. Jose, Tiago, Hugo, Adolfo, Edwardo all serviced and helped us throughout our meal. Special callout to Tiago who was funny and entertaining as well as informative. Yucca Soup interesting like chicken noodle minus noodles and add yucca hehehe Octopus/Squid/Shrimp Salad delicious and a large plate, so much food. This filled us up we could only have a small taste our main course. Tripe was so good, so much flavor and the tripe was clean you wouldn't know what you were eating if no one told you. It was also a happy accident since hubby ordered cod lol Suckling Pig what!? So tender and well seasoned I didnt have to dip it in the sauce they gave We got Garlic Porkchop to go and wow so much food. We're set for dinner and lunch and dinner again hehehehe

Looking around for Saturday / date nite dinner in a different town n different cuisine n stumbled upon the Portuguese tavern n thought we'd try it, we love portugese food specially seafood n fish.. Lovely restaurant in Clifton on a busy street. . Had limited parking on the side of the restaurant but we were lucky to get a spot. Very deceiving from outside. But it has a lovely ambience and plenty of seating n nicely decorated .was v busy. friendly welcoming staff. The complimentary bread though not warm was really really good w butter. The Cesar salad was good n huge portion. Tasted v good. Had the sapatiera-never heard of it before n googled n found it interesting. So ordered it. It's real crab meat mashed up w a savory creamy mixture of egg mayonnaise mustard pickles n beer (not sure of beer) n served inside crab shell. Came w crab claws too. Delicious is understatement. Out of this world. Reminded me growing up back in my country our cook used to make it for us. For entrees we had the cod/ bacalhau taverna. Was fried cod w seafood n peppers in a v tasty tomato sauce. Unbelievably good. Came w house potato chips Also had the deep fried red snapper . That was crispy n tasted good too. We had to try some of the many deserts they had - settled on cinnamon rice pudding n the mango cheese cake . So good n generous portions. Took a doggy bag home n will enjoy it tonite for dinner. Thank you for a great dinner, Will be back soon as there were some other entrees that we would love to try

Top sirlion special.

Huge portions and reasonably priced specials and menu. I've always had a good and satisfying meal here and the servers are so friendly!

Two visits, spaced a few years apart... they've tinkered with their 'formula' but I'm not so sure it was all for the better. Our most recent visit - now they serve your entree on these massive plates that are the size of the classic "breakfast in bed" tray but it's more for show and my actual meal consisted of one piece of protein (salmon), a little blob of mashed potatoes here, some shredded carrots in opposite corners and then a bit of green veg (asparagus and broccoli) in the opposing corners. Cooked well.  Flavorful.  But a bit 'middle of the road', if you know what I mean. Had I been to any other Portuguese restaurant in Jersey my plate would've been obscenely overflowing with rice and potatoes and veggies and I'd have to wave the white flag halfway through and taking at least one doggie bag home with me. Our first time here I thought the sangria was 'off' (bitter) but this time around... better (and stronger!). My kids enjoyed their meals (steak for one, tuna-and-risotto for the other) more than I did.  (And their dishes were way more substantial than mine as well.) An extensive menu (besides all the 'classics' you'd expect they have a slew of pasta options, a kid's menu as well as a full page of specials). Restaurant looks great - from the tables to the floor to the walls and artwork. Considering portion vs. cost - pricing was a bit rough. They have a (snug) parking lot (of course you get customers inventing their own spots which later causes headaches for cars trying to maneuver in/out of the legit spaces they'd parked in originally), as well as a bit of street parking. Staff - (mostly) friendly. They have a bar in front but I'm hanging with my teenagers so I haven't had a chance to see how it is. Overall?  It's a-okay.  But when it comes to food representing Seleção das Quinas - Taste of Portugal in Newark remains unsurpassed.

I am great fun of Portuguese cuisine and have been to a variety of restaurants across tri-state and had positive experiences. Unfortunately can't say same about Portuguese Tavern. We walked in for dinner, place was fairly empty but filled in quickly. We're immediately sit. Service was courteous but rather slow and waiters didn't know the menu and ingredients. We had specific food restrictions and asked waiters couple of times after reading the menu and they confirmed, however when the main course came it had items that were not disclosed in menu nor waiter mentioned it. Very disappointing especially when a customer has medical conditions and or religious restrictions. We returned dishes back to kitchen paid for appetizers and left with bad after taste.

Paella Marinera

Sigh, the food was very underwhelming. Ordered the paella marinara, it was more rice than anything, very skimpy with the lobsters and clams/mussels just had the shells and nothing in it. Only redeeming quality was the service.

My boss and a few coworkers pickup food from here every Friday. They get generous portions and seem to love it. I ordered the vegetable paia. For 17$ I got a large tray of food and got about 5 meals out of it. I appreciate the aluminum container which is 100% recyclable. I can't believe that anybody uses styrofoam and single use plastic utensils, I won't be going back for that reason alone.

Great food, fast service, great prices, the staff is super friendly and I love the inside of here, they have a bar/casual side as well as a nicer dining room. Highly recommend this place for just a night out or a special occasion.

Decor at entrance

Service is excellent! Food phenomenal! Clean and brightly colored restaurant. Definitely will be back. Parking is a bit tough. We parked around the corner because they have a small lot. Can't wait to go back! Oh the sangria was delicious too!

Bar staff had drinks in front of us in less than the time it took to figure out what appetizers we wanted. Now let's talk about the food. In SoFla we have a saying for things that can't really be described. We say SOFA KING, the food was SOFA KING, the service was SOFA KING, the people and atmosphere was SOFA KING. Do yourself a favor, sit at the bar have a conversation with the locals and enjoy food that is made by people that actually care about the product leaving the kitchen.

I immediately brought the issue to the waiter's attention, yet no one from management came over to speak with me or apologize for what happened. What was even more disappointing was that I was not offered another meal or given the opportunity to order something else. When a customer is served food that is clearly unacceptable, I would expect management to take the situation seriously, check on the customer, apologize, and make an effort to correct it. Unfortunately, none of that happened. The food itself was bad enough, but the lack of concern and customer service afterward made the experience even worse. I expected much more from this restaurant.

I chose the Lemon & Herb flavor for one and the Medium spice for the other. It took a little while for the food to come out, but it was worth the wait. The chicken had a nice grilled and roasted flavor, and it was juicy throughout. The Lemon & Herb had great flavor, while the Medium spice had a nice little kick to it. I also ordered a large Peri Fries ($5.95). They were lightly battered, seasoned with peri salt, and crispy on the outside. Solid fries that I really enjoyed. Overall, I enjoyed my meal, and the BOGO deal made it an even better value. I would recommend this place if you're looking for tasty grilled chicken with plenty of flavor.

NOTE: the beef ribs that everyone's talking about are sliced short ribs. Don't think those big bone beef ribs you get at American BBQ joints. Devil is in the details. What made this place a 3, star is that the staff doesn't introduce the menu and items well. For example, I got the beef ribs with vegetables and sweet plantains (both VERY good btw), they failed to explain that there are SPICY PICKLED VEGETABLES THAT GOES WITH IT. I took a bite of the cauliflower thinking it was the vegetables side, and spat it right out because it's the Portuguese style pickled veggies. If someone didn't eat spicy that would definitely mess them up. Ambiance? None, it's basically a small bodega with 3 pairs of booth seats and 5 bar seats. How is it colder in the restaurant than outside (it is currently March)

The place had a great vibe and I loved that the copocabana lady was everywhere. Very cool! We had a late reservation at 8 on Saturday and we were definitely a little rushed at the end so I would recommend eating earlier. We probably would prefer a 7 reservation as the kitchen seems to close around 9 and cleanup begins while you are eating. The food was all gluten free and there were plenty of dairy free options. I thought the food was clean and delicious and I could tell the chef put a lot of effort into his cooking. I also felt good after I ate it which is not always the case for me. They take great care in picking ingredients and it shows through in the taste and flavors of their food. I liked every single thing I ate. I also took home a lot of leftovers! I liked the food just as much a day later. Absolutely delicious. The other little issue I had was they tack on a service fee/ gratuity of 20%. We have seen this on vacations but never in the states. I feel this makes some people confused and uncomfortable. We always tip at least 20% for good service. The forced service fee/gratuity is not something we personally are a fan of. I would definitely 100% go back for the food and my husband felt the same. If in the area, check this place out as you will enjoy.

The only thing I don't understand is why they miked the guitar in a smallish restaurant so Smartwatches kept flashed "louder than 90dB" warnings. It really wasn't necessary. But you go to a restaurant for the food. And my food was a 2 with the wind behind it. I had the Chicken Extremena, which is chicken filets with onions, red peppers, potatoes and Spanish sausage. Yes, all those ingredients were in the dish. It was too salty although it did have a bit of a kick. All in all, the ingredients didn't blend well, it sort of seemed like they were thrown together and doused in a generic . A friend had the Veal Corunesa, which is veal and mushrooms sauteed in brandy sauce. She stated that a fine piece of veal was cut into little pieces, overcooked and swimming in brandy sauce. Now, the people who ordered the pan fried filet of fish and the pork chops had good meals. But the chef should be able to do something other than panfry and broil. Last point, I had a chocolate brownie with walnuts and vanilla ice cream for dessert. I am know for my proclivity to eat anything chocolate. I took a bite of a dry brownie and ate the vanilla ice cream. I heard the tiramisu was good. But I didn't have the tiramisa. Service was prompt, surroundings pleasant. So here's the deal. The quality of the food was too erratic to be three stars. The entertainment was very pleasant, so averaging a 4 + 2 equals 3. I have no desire to go back and try again. There are so many good Spanish restaurants in Essex County even outside of the Ironbound that going here for a dinner just seems to be a waste.
