Had a mixed experience at Solar 31. Visited the other night w the family. Since we were there w the kids, they asked us to sit in the front room which is really an informal make shift dining area near their lobster and fish tanks. We ordered the red snapper at 50 euros per kilo. Our was 1.3 kilos. It fed the entire family. Grilled fish offerings are served w a standard grilled veggie side. I had my heart set on grilled octopus but it was sold out by 8pm. Service was decent but very task oriented. Seems like most of the service was directed towards the main dining room. Fish was excellent. Not a must when in Lisbon. read more

The restaurant inside was very beautiful, warm, and inviting. It felt like everyone eating there was celebrating. Lots of wine buckets at many tables We came around 5 as we didn't have a reservation and was seated right away. There were about 4 other couples already there. We ordered 3 dishes: **fried sardines (which is no longer on the menu, but you can ask about it, and will serve if they have) - the dish was very good, and plentiful! **razor-clams, in butter and garlic, and it was very delicious too! we were trying to order some other type of clam on the menu, but they ran out. The waiter recommended these clams and told us the price. **octopus - Very good. it was a whole baby octopus, like with the head and all the legs. Usually you know it comes on a plate with a few tentacles, but this was the whole animal. Like a baby one haha. But i was like wow haha. Delicious, tender, flavorful, just a bit pricey. Friend of mine took me to Solar31 as my Finale dinner in Lisbon. It's Simple off-the-beaten-path-Gem Locals favorite. Although it's not bombarded by tourists I recommend making reservation as the restaurant is very popular with the locals which is a great sign. As you enter the restaurant you see display of fish so fresh they literally were just caught from the ocean! The decor of main dining room had modern and classy feel. The waitstaff were very friendly and service was lovely. I immediately felt like I was a guest invited at friends place:-) Ok down to business! I had Octopus and Stone crab. Both dishes were outstanding. Octopus was grilled to perfection so tender and full of taste of ocean. Stone Crab experience was very unique. First they bring the live Stone crab to the table to show before it goes to the kitchen. Seafood as fresh as it gets! Having been a world traveler I have had the Best of the Best seafood in the world. Solar31 definately ranks on top of the list and was by far the Best seafood I have had in Lisbon. Went here for an early lunch at 11:30am. We were the first and only ones were, which is normal since most people eat at lunch at a later time. We were greeted by the head chef, Paulo, who gave us recommendations on what to order. Since it wasn't busy he paid a lot of attention to us and made sure our food was up to his standard. He even said: "If you eat the food and you don't like it, I will go back and change it". That's premium customer service. He didn't have to worry about that because everything that came out of the kitchen was superb!! My friend and I ordered the clams, shrimp, and a fish dish. I loved the sauce the shrimp was cooked in and when Paulo explained how it was made, I was surprised. The process is so simple but the end result was spectacular. Anyone can saute garlic on pan to browning, add olive oil, salt, and some brandy but I'm pretty sure it will not turn out like Paulo's recipe. The same goes for the clams - simple and fresh. We were so pleased with the food and service that we decided to go again the next day. We arrived around 1:30pm and the restaurant was PACKED. Paulo wasn't able to have a full on conversation with us this time but that was okay! We understood he was busy but I did notice he made the effort to stop by every table and make sure the customers were satisfied with their food. For the second visit at Solar 31, I tried the grouper and the octopus. I really dislike octopus and I've tried it a few times in the US - rubbery and the tentacles really weirds me out. Paulo convinced us to order it and try. If we didn't like it, we could return it back to the kitchen. I took one bite of the octopus and I WAS CONVERTED. It melted in my mouth. So delicious and amazing. I remember sitting there thinking to myself how sad I was going to be knowing that once I leave Lisbon, I'm never going to have octopus as good as that one. Lovely place. It's located in an interesting area and tucked in a side street and it's a slight hike to get here. There are a couple of turns but you will get there. I love the warm bread with simple butter. Instead of wine, I opted for water and it came in a very interesting set up. See pictures for more detail. I know this place is famous for its octopus but since I hadnt tried the black swordfish I opted for that instead. The fish was fresh and didn't leave any residual taste. I like how it was accentuated with the flavorful sautéed vegetable. The ambience was nice but if you don't like tight space, you might not like it but you might have a hard time finding places with large space. Enjoy! read more

This restaurant was the best restaurant experience I've had in my 17 day in Portugal. Very cozy environment, with great staff, helpful whenever you have questions. I would like to say that the chief coming out of the kitchen and interacting with customers made the environment much warmer. I ordered a black swordfish, which can only be found off the shores of island of Madeira, the fish was exquisite, it was so flavorful. The chief came out of the kitchen to show me/ demonstrate how the fish looks like, I even took a picture him holding the 2 foot long black sea monster that is also found in the depths of the ocean. Despite everyone's great reviews of this restaurant, I can't give it more than two stars. We went there for lunch a few weeks ago and our meal just wasn't that good. I had the garlic shrimp, and fortunately, this dish was decent and had a lot of shrimp so that my husband could eat some of it. He had ordered the red snapper/besugo and it was very bland and tasteless. It was as if it was simply cooked with no spices or oil or garlic. And even though the waiter mentioned that he tried to get all the bones out of the snapper, there were bones in each bite of his dish. My wife and I went there tonight after a long overnight trip from Washington DC. We were celebrating our 50 th anniversary of having met. We were very tired but excited to try this highly reviewed restaurant. We could not have been more please. We arrived early(1800) and had the pleasure of meeting the chef. He suggested some specials not on the menu and the food began to flow. Each dish was better than the last; the wine was perfect. Many Portugese restaurants tend to use too much sugar and salt. The food was delicately seasoned, allowing the fish to shine through. The wines were spectacular. We are going again tomorrow night. read more

We came here because our AirBnb Host recommended it. It was the best dinner we had in lisboa. The seafood here is just amazing. The restaurant itself is so cute, service was great, very welcoming. We ordered 3 dishes, The garlic shrimp, The clams, and the red snapper for dinner. ALL 3, delicious! We did make a reservation for 7:30. I recommend making one if you want to sit in the main dining area. Our waiter Joao was phenomenal. He had us laughing the entire time. If you love seafood and are in lisbon, this place is a must! Avoid like the plague! Came here based on good Trip Advisor reviews with wife's birthday. What a nightmare. They made us wait 20 minutes and during this time witnessed unsanitary conditions (wait staff handling fish with bare hands and leaving remaining fish tank open, disgusting!) and then they kept saying how many people wait for their restaurant?? Seriously? I have never in my life walked out of a restaurant anywhere in the world, this is a first. Not to mention, the street is an open air drug market. After striking out on finding a table at our first restaurant of choice (The Food Temple), we quickly browsed Yelp and found Solar 31. We luckily found a table here immediately. After we were seated, we ordered a liter of wine (for 7 euros, it was an amazing deal) and our mains. My friend got red snapper, and I got the house steak. While we waited, the head chef came out to speak with us about the steak. Apparently the menu said that it was meant to come with cream, but the chef assured me that he had a better recipe in mind (with garlic and butter). It definitely did not disappoint--it was delicious! My friend enjoyed her red snapper, but found that there were a few too many bones in it (they de-bone the fish at your table). I took away one star, because the service at the beginning of the meal was slightly dismissive. We had a few questions to ask of the waiter, who mumbled an answer and quickly walked away. One other pro tip--they have tanks of fish and lobsters that are incredibly fresh and cooked to order. This is great, but also means that they parade the fish through the dining room to the kitchen, which can be not so pleasant for someone who doesn't want to see their meal in raw form. read more

My wife and I found this little gem by accident strolling around Lisbon at dusk. We didn't know what to expect but we were in for a pleasant surprise: the staff was very friendly and the chef came out of the kitchen to present the fresh catch of the night. He presented various kinds of really tasty fish in a very funny way and we chose the black sword fish after the show was done. There was cheese and bread with olives for starters (the cheese was really tasty!). When the fish came it was just perfect, we enjoyed it from the first to the last bite. There was some salad, potatoes and vegetables to go along with it but the fish was the star of the evening (that's not to say the rest wasn't good). On the recommendation of the waitress we had a dessert which was extremely delicious once again. If you happen to be in Lisbon, check out this excellent restaurant! Of note: even though the cheese and bread is brought without ordering, you will be charged for it. The cheese was around 4 € and the bread about 2 €. It would be a shame to miss it, though. And because everyone was so nice I didn't mind paying a few euros more for an amazing experience. read more

The restaurant is located on a side street that is almost an alley just off a main walking street. From the outside it didn't look like much. Once you enter the restaurant you will find it to be first class in appearance & atmosphere. All three couples ordered the wild sea bass for two. It was fantastic. Don't be discouraged when google maps takes you off the beaten path to find this place. Tucked away, up a narrow (sorta steep) street is this one of a kind restaurant. It's worth the uphill hike that my family and I did it twice! We were so impressed with the food the first night that we went ahead and made reservations for the second night. We were very lucky we went early our first night (as we did not have reservations) and were able to be squeezed in. However, it was apparent that the restaurant does fill up quickly! Everything on the menu was fresh and reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend the octopus and crab dishes. The food was delicious and the service was excellent.
