Fell in love when I first came here about 3 years ago! I'm from San Diego, so I'm pretty picky with a great tasting spicy salsa for my burritos! Anyways, sol had an unlimited salsa bar and surprisingly their super hot red salsa was hot, yet tasty. Maybe even too hot for MANY people but just right for me. I stopped going there for a while and recently started ordering the shrimp and steak burritos again. Decent "Mexican" food at fair prices. Chico has an amazing amount of Mexican restaurants and Sol certainly is more Americanized than a number of them. Omg so for the whole first year we've lived in Chico, I've only purchased the carnitas street tacos (because when you find something you really love, you don't think it could get any better!) until today! I dislike leaving negative reviews. I would have preferred to notify management directl,y but there is no way to do that on the website. This used to be one of our favorite restaurants until we started avoiding meat and dairy for health reasons. We always try to support local vs. Chipotle, etc. Unfortunately it is strangely impossible to order a burrito here without meat or dairy without being treated like green people. Our favorite burrito at every other Mexican restaurant is a bean, rice, raw onions, cilantro, salsa, with avocado or guacamole. Only difference at Sol is we order the cauliflower because their rice uses chicken juice. The burrito we receive is very inconsistent and very painful to order the way their system is designed. Despite letting them know upfront no meat or dairy, we are asked multiple times what meat we desire. Management, please add a plantbased vegan burrito option to your menu that your staff knows how to make so it tastes consistently great instead of subpar. Ordered asada fries. I called in and was told the wait was 20 min. I came in 10min later and paid to wait for my food. 40 mins later, my name had still not been called. I went up and talked to them and it turns out they gave my food to someone else. They offered to make me a new order. They did which took another 15 mins. So after an hour wait, I got my asada fries home, and the French fries were not fully cooked. Needless to say, a HUGE disappointment. 10+Stars honestly Red hot salsa is total crack, I wake up craving it. I'm from San Diego and have tried to think of ways to smuggle it down here on several occasions. From the outside this place look/seems "Typical Mexican" foodish. But you would be deceived. It is not. It is sent from the Lord of Lords. I am a vegetarian (not vegan) I had a SoCal Burrito because "fry-not?" with rice/beans instead of meat. It was possibly the best thing my palette has ever consumed. While I often assume most Mexican places use the same ingredients this place does something different. The savory, spicy, flavors meld so well and just right you would be hard-pressed to not over eat just from pure joy. Like a little bit of success and adventure and freedom ('Murica) in each bite. I've searched San Diego for a comparable and have yet to find one... This is a case for Roy Kroc, or franchise worthy, or atleast building one in San Diego. MUST TRY! read more

I have to say, Ihave been looking for a favorite Mexican food place in Chico and I feel I may have found it here. After you figure out the ordering process/sequence the place is pretty fantastic. The atmosphere is cozy feeling and the patio is shaded and pleasant. We ordered a Pineapple Margarita and a Blueberry Avocado Margarita, both were very flavorful and seemed to have a nice amount of alcohol. For dinner I ordered the Steak & Shrimp burrito, added supreme (Sour Cream & Guac) and my girlfriend ordered the Tostada Salad. At first bite of both, the meat was flavored just right. Everything looked fresh and was prepared beautifully. The portions were large and prices were fair and the service was attentive and nice. They also have amazing fresh salsa with multiple options at their salsa bar. We will certainly be going back again and again as long as their food stays consistent. read more

Sol is a place where some people go these days because it's one of the newer Mexican businesses in town that has decent food with decent cooks. Let me say first and foremost that the customer service received today 11/23/14 was quite appalling. The young adult employees on staff this afternoon at 1pm should be ashamed of themselves as should the owners. This place seemed like it was being run by 15 year olds at their first job in an ice cream shop. Management better pull it together because based on today's experience I would never set foot in the restaurant again. No management what so ever appeared to be on sight. Cook failed as a cook by not making the restaurant flow, which is telling of how things are running behind closed doors. Picture yourself mid afternoon on what was otherwise a very pleasant Monday. It's 1PM, and it's not rush hour, There are maybe 15 or so guests TOTAL in the restaurant - many of which already seated and served by the time my girlfriend and I arrived. Now picture yourself waiting in line for 13 or so minutes with other agitated customers piling up. The young woman working the register clicked fast at the touch screen interface - but had no clue how to operate in a front end capacity in an increasingly busy restaurant. The young woman took my name, she gave us an order number. I pleasantly advised her that we would be in the 'other' side of the restaurant waiting. My girlfriend and I sit down with our number at the table waiting and chatting. As I'm sitting there, I see a male employee clearly on his phone as no fewer than 5, count em - FIVE tables sat laden with the remnants of other customers' filth. There were beer bottles, plates with leftover food - yet there is an employee visibility sitting on his phone where customers sit. It was absolutely despicable. This is clearly not a family run business. Fast forward to when we received our order...and lo and behold WE DIDN'T. After sitting there for 20 minutes on the other side (watching an employee sit on his phone no less) - my girlfriend went to the counter to find out what had happened. Our order. was. sitting. In. A Bag. NO MATTER WHAT If I were the business owners of this establishment I would absolutely be worried sick about how my business is run on a day to day basis when nobody who cares is looking. Had a craving for mexican food, said why not try Sol. All this restaurant had going for it is presentation. The food looked good, I was excited to try it. I got chicken and shrimp fajitas, it had no salt and the chicken was not even seasoned. The rice was tasteless and the beans were old. I also got a chile relleno, which for 5.75 was the worse idea ever. It was tiny, the egg tasted weird and disgusting and it was just drenched in tomato sauce, no salt or flavor. My friend got chile verde. That was NOT chile verde, it was carnitas with some juice that was salty and inedible. My go to when food is flavorless is to just drench it in some good hot salsa. First time this didnt work. The salsa was just either blended peppers with no seasons or just tomato blended with cilantro and lime :( To add on, it was super expensive to pay for just presentation. $17 dollars for fajitas and a chile relleno. I have come in 8-10 times and not once have I had a good experience. The Burritos are usually lukewarm or cold, or they mess up your order. I usually try to get the California burrito or what they call the "SoCal" and always order it without guac since I am allergic to avocado. However, once again, today they put guac on the burrito (3rd time). So I had to throw most of it away. The only reason I have kept coming here is because a friend is insistent that I give it more tries before I write it off for good. It's a nice facility but that's about all they have going for them. I would say that the service is good, but it's hard when their only job is to make food as ordered and they can hardly do that, and when they do, it's cold and tastes mediocre at best. In our quest to find a good Mexican eatery in Chico we decided to give this another try since it's on our end of town. There's always a line out the door and the person taking orders is VERY slow. Ordered vegetarian burrito telling the girl to leave off the onions. She rechecked with me, "so no onions, right?". Correct. Long wait and my burrito finally arrives. Cut open the burrito and so hungry to dig in. Huge onions come sliding out. Gross... So I take it back to the very busy front area and a waitress tells me that's what's on a vegetarian burrito and they don't "pick out the onions." But I specifically told them no onions. She tells me they'll make another. I watch my husband eat his entire meal and my burrito finally arrives and did not have the extra sour cream and guacamole I paid for. My girlfriend and I were wondering what to do for dinner, and we decided to order take out and enjoy a nice Friday night at home. I called 4 times before my call was answered, twice I received a busy tone, finally on the 4th call, a young woman answered and told me that I needed to come in to make an order or that I should call back because they are busy. No kidding.. busy, on a Friday? You don't say. To which I replied that she answered my call only to tell me to come in or to call back in five minutes. Food: I would give the food 4 stars! I got the So-cal burrito and my boyfriend got the chicken chimichanga both minus sour cream! It definitely holds its place against other mexican places in chico! Me and my boyfriend love super spicy food but even with out the mouth burning fire of a spicy burrito this was delicious! Atmosphere: I would give them 1 star, maybe 0! Walking in for the first time we were disappointed that you order then sit, I really like to look over menu's while sitting rather than feel on display while they wait for you to order. I was rushed. The whole reason we went was to try the asada fries but forgot to order it because of the ordering at the counter. The lack of noise, no music, people talk very quietly, and that you seat your self made for a very awkward first impression. upon leaving me and my boyfriend both said the food was great but the atmosphere was so awkward and uninviting that we probably would take to go if we ever did come back. I don't know if we will, if they changed to a table service I'm sure this would be our new date night place, but with the fast food type ordering system I just can't relax espcially with the awkwardness of no talking. Service: I would give them 1 to 2 stars at most. It wasn't so much something they did as things they didn't. They greeted us, in a tired way, no smiles. First of all, this isn't authentic Mexican food, and it doesn't claim to be. Anyone who gives this place a bad rating because it's less authentic than a taco truck is an Idiot. Sol is more like California inspired Mexican food. It's along the same lines as Chipotle, but a lot more creative. This is what Chipotle might have been if it grew up in the Napa Valley. Second of all, Thank God it's not downtown! It's nice to have a few great restaurants in Chico that don't require navigating the pitfalls (lack of parking, traffic, homeless people, obnoxious students, dirty hippies...) of downtown Chico! Obviously an overpriced downtown storefront is not a requirement for success, because this place is doing alright. I know the above statements are more responses to other's reviews than they are actually reviews, but it had to be said. As far as the food goes, it's great. I highly recommend the SoCal burrito which includes both carne asada and french fries! Yum. Prices are a bit higher than what you might pay at Chipotle or Burrito Bandito, but the food is better, so its worth it. And don't worry, you won't leave hungry. The service here is generally fast and friendly. The most time intensive part of the process is waiting in line to order. This is tricky, because I ordered a Sol Bowl to-go. Since I have some dietary restrictions, I had to ask for no cheese, rice, or beans. So basically this is just lettuce, avocado, some of their corn salsa, and meat. And I can't even use the dressing they offer because dairy. So I asked for extra meat, like I have done in the past. And I'm totally fine paying extra for it, BUT THEY NEED TO PUT THE EXTRA MEAT IN MY BOWL! And the thing that's frustrating is that I don't want to get back in the car and drive back. Because I got all comfy in my PJ's and was all excited to dive in. And of course they put the meat at the bottom of the bowl so I couldn't even check when I was there. And I get why, it's so it doesn't wilt the lettuce. So I think, maybe I should call. But then I remember when I called to place the order they were pretty busy and what good is this going to do. I don't want to drive across town just to get the order fixed because gas isn't cheap these days. This was a great spot that we found during our last visit to Chico. It was a Sunday and we were looking for a new lunch spot and this place wasn't too far from where we were. You order from the counter where they give you a number and bring the food out to you, which was fine. The menu items were reasonable and many selections--I ended up getting the tostada salad. When we sat down we picked a spot outside--very nice, clean, and open with good spaces between tables so you weren't participating in other people's conversations. My only complaint was that the wait was pretty long (they were busy, but not over-the-top busy), and that our orders didn't come out at the same time. There were 3 of us in the party, and 2 of us got our food and then had to wait 10 minutes before our dining companion got his. That was annoying--but once the food was there...yum. Nice flavors, good portions, and seasoned well. I was very happy with my meal, as was everyone else.
