12-23-13 Update: I have been to Sol quite a few times in the last few weeks and it has been great! The owner is friendly and quick to take our order if the line is too long. Food always comes out fast and tastes great. Changed to 4 stars. 10-15-13 I have to admit, I'm biased when it comes to Mexican food. First of all I grew up with a Mexican grandma who cooked homemade tortillas and fresh beans and rice. Also, I lived in San Diego for 5 years which, in my opinion, is the best Mexican food in the world. Anyways, Sol is right across from my work so we frequently go there. The first few times I've been it was great. I got the nachos which are big enough to share. The next couple times I've ordered ahead for my staff of 10 people. A few times I've had to go back because they constantly forget parts of our order. They are always apologetic and quick to fix my order. Another time I went to Sol, I ordered the "SoCal burrito" (a burrito with french fries-which is basically one of the food groups when you live in San Diego) so this burrito had big shoes to fill. It was terrible. I threw the whole thing away. To be fair, I ordered a few minutes before closing.. The food is decent and definitely a quick, inexpensive place for lunch. The ambiance is great too. I suggest the nachos or Chicken Taco Salad. read more

First time and ordered 2 burritos and 2 taco salads to go. I came in and was greeted, then he asked if it was okay if he answered the phone, I said sure. He then proceeded to take a large order, leaving me standing at the counter. I finally asked one of the other employees that didn't look busy to take my order. He was helpful and I was hopeful. Recently moved to this side if town and "really" wanted to love this place. Food was ready in acceptable amount of time. And in hope I tipped 20%. The taco salad was okay, but not super great. Filled my belly with and some leftover. The burritos not so much. Way too much rice in both. The carnitas burrito was almost half done before biting into any meat. Then the texture of the meat made the eater gag. Both were also very bland, even though they were ordered spicy. Very disappointed. Not going back and really sad I won't have the convenience of going there because the location is so close. Lesson learned. Back to Chipotle it is. read more

We love it here! Sure, the chips could be warmer and fresher- but other than that- the food is excellent and always comes out of the kitchen right. (That's a big deal to me.) The fresh salsa bar is excellent, and the carne asada tacos are some of the best I've had. If you're in a hurry on a weekend or Friday night, be aware that this isn't fast food. Some reviews complain about the wait time. This place gets busy, so just be prepared to wait a bit. Lunch on weekdays is always perfect because it's not full and the food comes out quicker. Well, we used to love this place. After today's visit we're not ever going back. After being open for patio seating during COVID, we expected the same today since nobody told us any different. I ordered the shrimp taco salad, double shrimp and spicy. I got mild and no extra shrimp. My friend ordered the chicken tostada salad and got extra chicken even though she didn't order it. After you order, pay and tip because their machine you pay on prompts you to tip, you get your bag of chips (not a basket) and go sit on the patio. No table number. Then you hear someone holler your name. They do not bring your food to you. You go get it. It's given to you in a plastic bag and you eat your 20 dollar salad out of a cardboard box. Wouldn't you think if they were accepting tips they would mention the fact that they are no longer serving on the patio and it was now strictly take out? Wouldn't you think you wouldn't be expected to tip someone when you weren't being served? I can guarantee you one thing. I wouldn't be paying 40 dollars to eat tacqueria out of a cardboard box. You should be more clear on what you're doing during these difficult times. You owe it to your loyal customers to give them the option of eating your overpriced and made wrong food out of cardboard boxes with plastic forks. Get it together people. read more

We get food here when we have our monthly staff meetings. So far I have tried their nachos and their steak and shrimp burrito. I don't have any input on the service and the actual restaurant because we get our meals to go, but the food is good. when you order "spicy" be prepared for SPICY, and if you like sour cream and guac make sure to ask for it... I assumed when I ordered the burrito and was mildly disappointed, but overall it was tasty, not sure I would go out of my way to eat in house, but a possibility for ordering out. read more

This place deserves it's 4 star reputation. It is probably Chico's nicest, best decorated and cleanest Mexican grill/quick burrito. They have a surf and turf burrito which is cool. The first carne asada burrito I had was amazing, the second was average, so it may be inconsistent at times. They have a salsa bar and a good drink selection. It's a quality place overall. Food here is great! I was referred by a friend when I told her I needed churros. I had a super carnitas burrito and it met all of my expectations. The carnitas are exceptionally tasty! They were exactly how I expect them from a taco truck or home-made. The rice and beans were not super awesome or super awful, just standard rice and beans, which are a big deal for me as I LOVE Mexican rice and beans. The churros were so good, tender on the inside and crispy on the outside with delicious whipped cream and chocolate surrounding them...exactly what I needed! I liked the salsa station, it's nice to be able to mix and match the flavors and try out which ones I liked best. I also felt like the whole setup of the building was well done. Outside seating for nice days, plenty of space inside to accommodate multiple small groups or maybe two big ones. The customer service was great, the food came out quickly, and the guy cleaning the place was on fire! Everyone was attentive and kind and tables were cleaned ASAP so the long line of patrons had places to sit right away. Best of all: they have phone and application ordering! I learned this as we sat and there was a pickup line for the app purchases. I'm excited to try that out next time, but for now, I am quite pleased with the food. I only wish it wasn't so tucked away so more people knew about it! How is it possible I've lived over by it all this time and never heard of it?! read more

One of the best tostada salads in Chico! Mainly because of the Cilantro Ranch Dressing and because it's the only place in town where I can order BACON as the meat option! The bacon is very crisp, never oily or greasy and other than Italian Cottage's Ranch dressing, (and Christian Michael's Jalapeño Ranch) it's my favorite place for Ranch dressing. Portions are on the larger side. Lots of salsa flavors to choose from. One warning though......if you are NOT a fan of onions, they are very, VERY heavy handed with them!! No joking!!!! I've had to repeatedly tell them while ordering that I didn't want ANY onions.....and still have received my order with what seems like an entire red onion on it. (4 star rating instead of 5 was based on the multiple Togo orders that where inedible due to the gobs of onions that couldn't be picked off and subsequently salads where trashed) I would also recommend calling in ahead to order your food on weekends. Although the lines move relatively quickly, it's always packed and when short staffed, they only have one register open. Lots of tables and a very nice outdoor patio area. When we approached the counter I attempted to greet the dude and he just asked if we'd be eating in. I then ask if the have Dos Equis and he says no. Chico is full of mexican restaraunts and I am always on the lookout for something new in town to eat. Sol Mexican Grill is a nice twist on Mexican/American food. The food is fresh and is cooked to order. Service is fast and friendly and the owner came to our table to make sure the food was what we were expecting. I had the Sol tacos (can't remember the exact name) 1 was the chorizo and 1 was carne asada which is made with pineapple. Both were very tasty. I try to visit a restaurant a few times to see if the food is consistent to be able to write an accurate review. I will be back to visit and with more friends! read more

We went to Sol on Saturday night about 6:15. The place was very busy. I ordered a Burrito Al Pastor and my wife had a Chicken Burrito. It took about 15 minutes for our food to come to our table. Both of our burritos were all rice almost no meat. At least we couldn't find the meat. If we wanted a rice burrito, that's what we would have ordered. SoCal burrito was fantastic! I always choose to hold the salsa though; I'd rather apply my own (usually Sriracha). Just moved to NorCal a few months ago and "California Burritos" (San Diego's creation) are very hard to find. I hope that changes. Soon!! read more

So, a year and a half later it seems Sol has gotten most of the bugs worked out. Went for an early lunch a couple weekends ago. Food was good and price was right. The big menu board is still confusing but we found the little menus that explained everything and were able to decide what we wanted. Staff was helpful and service was fast. I noticed that they had an app that looked like it would be helpful for those who want to order food to go but want to look at the menu. I will return. read more

Today, I ordered a tostada salad with carnitas and it was NOT good. My carnitas had so much gristle that I picked out four large chunks of pure fat. I didn't think to take pictures until after I threw it out. I also had to shred the carnitas myself as my salad was topped with chunks of meat about the size of a ping pong ball. There was so much salt, it was basically inedible. I ate about 25% before I just had to throw it all away, something pretty bothersome after spending nearly $13 for lunch. Particularly since I'd been working since 6am & was really looking forward to this salad. This place has been good in the past. I really hope this isn't a continuing trend. read more

Great customer service interesting in that you sorcery at a counter and they bring it to you. Service was fast and the food was incredible for the price. We had carnitas, chili verde and a chi burrito. Ok my daughters a bit boring on food choices. A pitcher of beer, chips, salsa, guacamole and soda. Total $40.00. I have been here many more times, so I wanted to write a quick update. If you go here, you *have* to try the carnitas! They are to die for!! If youa re like me, you want a little more sauce on your enchiladas then is served here. Simple answer - ask for more and they will happily put more on yours. It makes a huge difference. Also worthy of a try are the Baja fish tacos. Very yummy... I give a thumbs down on the California Burrito that has fries inside instead of rice and beans. Fries were soggy and uninteresting IMHO. Overall, Sol has yummy fresh food, low prices, very pleasant ambiance and friendly service. I recommend it! read more

This was the third bad experience and last time we will go to Sol. We were very disappointed. It took 40 minutes to get two salads but the steak they put on salads was rotten, we could not eat them. The seating is a little confusing, there are two different buildings (one main building a second for when its busy) and an outside area to eat. I'm not too fond of ordering at the counter then sitting down with your number, but that didn't affect my rating. The guy at the counter didn't seem to happy to be working, but he was nice. (I'm one of those people who is picky so I always expect the worst.) I got a spicy shrimp chimichanga and my husband a spicy baja fish burrito. Both were amazing. The fish and shrimp were fresh. The spicy is has a nice bite to it. I was very disappointed in the churros however. They were a little too crispy, and only dusted with cinnamon sugar. The chocolate drizzle was on the plate for decoration only. I will return because I understand some people just have bad days. The food was really good and now we know which building is the main. My son's father and I feel comfortable enough to bring our son who has Autism here. I love their Sol Bowl, enchiladas, and nachos.
