This place looks very nice and inviting. The staff is very welcoming and friendly. We had the dry curry with minced meat which was a little sad looking. It didn't taste much like curry, just the occasional hint of lemongrass. It tasted more like simple stir fried minced meat and a little disappointing. The shrimps with vermicelli were fantastic on the other hand! Very savory and tasty. The glass noodles were just so good! All two mains came with rice. Nice atmosphere. My husband and I decided to try this restaurant during our stay in DC. We made reservations online and we were seated on time. I ordered the pad khing and my husband had Khao soi. We both enjoyed our dishes. Probably the best flavor of Khao soi we've had since we visited Thailand. It is pretty spicy but super flavorful. Service was friendly and the restaurant was clean. Lovely restaurant with beautiful and charming ambiance. I was fascinated by their decor and tranquil vibe. The service was superb, the food was tasty. They offered a great variety of cocktails and also have international selection of beers. I ordered the shrimp Pad Thai and I also tried the crab dumplings. All tasted delicious and had a very delicate flavor. My cocktail was very good I just wish it had the lychee on it since it was featuring the fruit. :) Since I visited during the week I didn't need a reservation. I came for my birthday, and it was very difficult to find good food. I mean, the pineapple fried rice was probably the best dish, but I didn't really like any of the other dishes including the one pictured. A very beautiful place, we had a great time as part of my roommate's birthday dinner. I got the steamed dumplings, which were delicious and served at a perfect temperature. My roommates got curry and fried rice, both of which said were on the spicier side. There was a spiced gin drink that was phenomenal and also leaned into its spice aspect. The menu denotes spice by either 1, 2, or 3 peppers but we felt that each dish might have been listed a pepper too low- with 2 pepper dishes leaning into more of a 3 pepper taste. Overall, it was a great time, but make sure to do your research on spice levels before ordering! I preferred the pad Thai and my boyfriend preferred the pad see eew. The pad see eew was flavorful and more savory. While the pad Thai had a wonderful flavor but was slightly sweet. We ordered both mild and they were seasoned nicely but not spicy. We also split and order of the Poh pia tod. The layout of the restaurant is nice. Definitely rideshare and rather parking friendly, and not too far from the metro. Food is good, but the service could stand to be a bit friendlier. Each of the persons that helped our table seemed like giving a smile or having convo to assist us was forced. Since it seemed to be every single person that came to our table acted this way, I'm going to question whether or not they wanted US there, as we were only one of the total of two other tables occupied in the restaurant at the time. Ran into this place from visiting the area and got it to go. Service took about 15-20 to prepare. Large portions as you can see! Rice was flavorful wished I would added some spice on it, but it was not short of chicken and veggies. The peanut sauce and the other dipping sauce that I received with my chicken satay were really good. My Thai tea was good as well. Wasn't not overloaded with ice which I truly appreciate. The only I could say was that I wasn't given any silverware with my to go order and when I placed my order over the phone I was not told the totally price of my order. I went to Soi 38 for lunch and ordered the Khao Pad Pu, which is fried rice with crab meat, egg, and scallions. It was pretty good, but nothing that special. It could've been a little more flavorful and could've benefited from some more of the crab meat. For $18.50, it was an okay deal. For dessert, I got the Banana Roti, which was a banana wrapped in dough with condensed milk around it. It was quite sweet and made for a nice dessert. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated, with aesthetic images on the walls, and has plenty of seating (both small and large tables). Soi 38 is also very authentic; the dishes are classic Thai dishes with the proper Thai names, and the employees are even Thai themselves. The staff were friendly and the service speed was decent. Overall, Soi 38 is a solid place to go for authentic Thai food, and is located in a central area near Dupont Circle in DC. I would recommend that you give it a try. read more

Whenever I go to a Thai restaurant, I am plagued with indecision. Should I get the classic pad kee mao and use it as a barometer with which to judge the other options or should I branch out and try one of the other delicious sounding options? At Soi 38, I faced this very dilemma. I ended up getting the lime coconut fizz, ped roti, the kanom jeen, a noodle soup in green curry, and the seafood kuay tiew kee mao. I ask for the kee mao extra spicy and with extra basil as always. The drink was meh. Instantly forgettable. I was very excited to try the roti, typically one of my favorite dishes, but unfortunately it too was forgettable. When the kee mao came out, I could immediately see there was no extra basil and I suspected no extra spice. Imagine my surprise when upon taking my first bite, I found there was no spice at all. Please be aware that this menu item has two peppers next to it! I wonder what pale, flat, and single dimensional pile of noodles would have come out had I not requested extra spice. I will say, this was my first time having a seafood (and not chicken or just shrimp) kee mao. I liked the variety but think I'd stick to chicken or shrimp next time. My friend got the kanom jeen which was a truly giant bowl of noodles, eggplant, and chicken in green curry. Green curry is always delicious so there were no surprises there. I will say I was confused by the lack of eggplant in the dish. Very strange choice. Overall, while I would be interested to try other dishes, based solely on what I had, I would pass on Soi 38. Before going to see Jo Koy, we came to Soi 38 for dinner. Our friend made reservations for 3pm and when we arrived the restaurant was pretty empty. We were greeted and ordered some drinks. I wasn't a fan of my drink, singapore sling, but several people about it, so maybe it just wasn't my thing. How, I did enjoy my husband's beer, Singha. Very refreshing and light. I ordered tom ka gai, which had great taste, but was missing more consistency for my preference. I would have preferred it with added rice and chicken....but thats just me. We ordered satay, which was a delicious starter. Hubs and I ordered the khao pad sapparod, which was amazing! The flank steak is thin, so there's a lot of flavor. However, the papaya salad and sticky rice make it 100x better. Love the papaya salad!! I also have tried the Ped Krob Kra Prow. We enjoyed Soi38 for a Monday night date night. Overall impressions: the food was good, and the service was a little lacking. I'll elaborate. Service: The restaurant was pretty busy for a Monday, and they only had two servers. The servers were not able to check on the tables often. Waters were not topped off. Additionally, they were out of the two starters that we wanted to try. Food: We had the pork neck and the crispy tofu starters. The tofu was delicious and a great texture. I loved the dipping sauce with peanuts. The pork neck was tasty, as well. But we really wanted the pork belly. It's fine to run out of a menu item, but the waiter should have said something when we sat down/ before we got our heart set on it. I loved my green curry chicken thigh entrée. The dish was so piping hot that I burnt my mouth quite a bit (from the temperature, not the spice). My fiancé had the crispy duck, which he also really liked! His dish was small though, so he ate some of mine. I would come back again but I think I prefer doing takeout from here. I visit DC every few weeks for work, I've ordered so much Thai delivery. It's always satisfied but been just OK. Tonight I tried Soi 38 and ordered kanom jeem delivery w/ tofu (I didn't like the way the chicken looked in the photos) spicy level medium. Guys. I'm half Laotian and live in NYC and previously in LA near Thai town. My spice tolerance is pretty high but their medium is the ideal level of Thai medium while still having a ton of flavor. Order the dishes here that aren't typically found in your neighborhood Thai spot and you will be very happy! So many veggies and so much delicious curry. They separated the noods and curry which was another plus. read more

I have visited Soi 38 several times and they have always been consistent with quality food and service! Also, there are only a few things cooler than the dragon mural inside the restaurant. The menu is pretty diverse and everything I have gotten has always been very well made and appetizing! I also think that the portion size is quite generous and you get your money's worth in that avenue. Specific dishes I can attest to are their chicken satay, pad kling (came with a side of rice, pad see eww (I would have maybe liked a little more noodles in the latest order I received). I have also tried the larb when my friend ordered it and found it quite tasty with a slight sour taste; it was filling but also felt light and fresh in my tummy. It is with a heavy heart that I write this bad bad BAD review for Soi 38. I have eaten at this restaurant many times over the last 5 or 6 years. I have always enjoyed the food there. I live within blocks of the restaurant and can walk there - and I do a lot. Please read my prior review of this place - I have raved about it and rightfully so. But, tonight, I don't even recognize this restaurant or the food that I got. I ordered Pad See Ew with tofu and Sesame Chinese Broccoli. Both of these dishes were terrible. The noodles were stuck together and not fully cooked. The Pad See Ew sauce was in there intermittently, here and there. Not enough to be good. The tofu was tasteless and dry AND most of it was delivered stuck together because they had not cut it into separate pieces. Plus the dish looked terrible. Honestly, I don't think that ANYONE looked at my dish before it went final. No self respecting chef/cook would let a dish go out like mine. The Sesame Chinese Broccoli likewise was terrible. Too salty, too soupy, too garlicky. Don't get me wrong - I like salty, soupy and garlic. But this dish had too much of all of it. I don't think a professional cook prepared it. And I paid $10.00 for approximately 4 forkfuls of this dish. So I paid a lot for crap. Truly it was crap. I could have gotten a WAY better meal if I had gone down the street to the dirty little Chinese place in the basement. Actually, I would have gotten a better meal anywhere else. To top it all off, the service was bad this time. I waited and waited and waited. And then I waited some more. I am shocked and saddened at the abomination of a meal I got tonight from Soi 38. It was not worth what I paid and I certainly feel that I wasted a dinner. I hope and pray that Soi 38 simply had a bad night; I hate to think that one of my favorite Thai places has lost it completely. But, from what I saw and ate tonight, I will be VERY hard pressed to ever patronize this place again. read more

We are in DC for the week with a group of friends (14 of us total), and a couple of people on the team have gluten allergies or sensitivities. It was great to find such a nice place that a) had so many GF dish options and b) could seat us all inside (it's the last week of October, rainy and cold outside so outdoor seating isn't an option). I ate the Pad Khing, which was delicious! Definitely hit the spot on a night like this! My wife had the Gang View Wan, which she really enjoyed -- although she expected it to be more of a platter vs a bowl/broth type of meal. The staff last night were amazing -- super friendly, patient with us newbs, and accommodating! The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is I'd like to see more than one steak/meat plate offered, and a better balance of spicy to non-spicy meals.
