With its delicious food, friendly service, upbeat ambiance, and super convenient downtown location, Soi 38 has solidified its spot as one of my favorite Thai restaurants in DC. Starting with their food -- Soi 38 is centered on Thai street food, so in addition to your classics (pad Thai, the various curries, etc.), they also have a couple of fun additions! Despite my excitement over the added variety, I opted for their Kuay Tiew Kee Mao (aka Drunken Noodles) because I was just really craving it that day...but I will absolutely be back to try out some of their other menu items! While this was the millionth drunken noodle I've tried, Soi 38 absolutely did not disappoint with the perfectly salty, sweet, and spicy sauce, and delightfully springy rice noodles. They included a generous portion of veggies and my protein of choice (seafood, which included several juicy shrimp, squid, and a few scallops). The overall dish was quite sizeable as well -- there was absolutely enough food for 2 meals (or a lil midnight snack after dinner). I also ordered their Lime Ginger Fizz, which was perfectly lime-y, ginger-y, and fizzy -- it wasn't too sweet, and it had a great tang from the ginger and bite from the lime. It was a great drink to cut through the heaviness of the noodles. Beyond the food, the service was phenomenal. We walked in right around the dinner rush on a Friday evening, but the host was able to seat us pretty quickly despite how packed the restaurant was. Our server kindly and patiently explained the various menu items (even though we ended up being basic...), and everything was generally super pleasant, friendly, and efficient. It didn't taste much like curry, just the occasional hint of lemongrass. It tasted more like simple stir fried minced meat and a little disappointing. It could've been a little more flavorful and could've benefited from some more of the crab meat. For $18.50, it was an okay deal. For dessert, I got the Banana Roti, which was a banana wrapped in dough with condensed milk around it. It was quite sweet and made for a nice dessert. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated, with aesthetic images on the walls, and has plenty of seating (both small and large tables). Soi 38 is also very authentic; the dishes are classic Thai dishes with the proper Thai names, and the employees are even Thai themselves. The staff were friendly and the service speed was decent. Whenever I go to a Thai restaurant, I am plagued with indecision. Should I get the classic pad kee mao and use it as a barometer with which to judge the other options or should I branch out and try one of the other delicious sounding options? At Soi 38, I faced this very dilemma. I ended up getting the lime coconut fizz, ped roti, the kanom jeen, a noodle soup in green curry, and the seafood kuay tiew kee mao. I ask for the kee mao extra spicy and with extra basil as always. The drink was meh. Instantly forgettable. I was very excited to try the roti, typically one of my favorite dishes, but unfortunately it too was forgettable. When the kee mao came out, I could immediately see there was no extra basil and I suspected no extra spice. Imagine my surprise when upon taking my first bite, I found there was no spice at all. Please be aware that this menu item has two peppers next to it! I wonder what pale, flat, and single dimensional pile of noodles would have come out had I not requested extra spice. I will say, this was my first time having a seafood (and not chicken or just shrimp) kee mao. I liked the variety but think I'd stick to chicken or shrimp next time. My friend got the kanom jeen which was a truly giant bowl of noodles, eggplant, and chicken in green curry. Green curry is always delicious so there were no surprises there. I will say I was confused by the lack of eggplant in the dish. Very strange choice. Overall, while I would be interested to try other dishes, based solely on what I had, I would pass on Soi 38. Each of the persons that helped our table seemed like giving a smile or having convo to assist us was forced. Additionally, they were out of the two starters that we wanted to try. Food: We had the pork neck and the crispy tofu starters. The tofu was delicious and a great texture. I loved the dipping sauce with peanuts. The pork neck was tasty, as well. But we really wanted the pork belly. It's fine to run out of a menu item, but the waiter should have said something when we sat down/ before we got our heart set on it. I loved my green curry chicken thigh entrée. The dish was so piping hot that I burnt my mouth quite a bit (from the temperature, not the spice). My fiancé had the crispy duck, which he also really liked! His dish was small though, so he ate some of mine. I would come back again but I think I prefer doing takeout from here. The menu is pretty diverse and everything I have gotten has always been very well made and appetizing! We are in DC for the week with a group of friends (14 of us total), and a couple of people on the team have gluten allergies or sensitivities.
