Went to Soho to get my Mac fixed. Mac was running really slow. John said needed to replace hard drive. John thought he had a 1T available. That would bump up disk space from the original 250G to 1T of space. John called me and said he only had a 2T hard drive and would 2T as replacement for the same price! How cool is that! John was a really nice guy at first. He was really friendly & I was extremely happy. My laptop screen (Toshiba 15.6 LCD) was cracked & I asked for a quote on Yelp, he said it would be quick & that he had the part in for XX amount of dollars. The next day I went & the day after I got my screen. He was with another customer so I didn't want to bother him looked at my laptop the screen was on & left. I noticed that the icons on my screen were really big, so I asked one of the IT guys I work with about it & how to make them smaller again. He said "your resolution is at its highest, what's you resolution supposed to be like?" We Googled it, it's supposed to be about 1900x700, but the resolution on my new screen was about 1300x600 or something like that. I was really upset at this point, because I felt like I was lied too. I contacted John & said that my resolution is smaller than it should be. The first thing he said was "I don't know if I disclosed this in the email..." & told me about how it's a possibility that it won't be the same, again something down those lines. I was already upset & I was more upset that he made it seem like he told me something, but didn't. I then said "no you did not disclose that in the email." His response was "well I'm telling you now" (OK a little rude for me & he started to get not as nice as when we first met.) "it will be about $100 more if you want the higher resolution LCD screen." *LONG PAUSE* "If you're not happy, I can take the screen off & put back your old one." "With a full refund?" "Yes with a full refund." I agree & tell him I'll swing by tomorrow. After this conversation I just needed someone to fix my computer, but I got a voicemail from John letting me know that it is the vendor's fault. They shipped the wrong screens & that I was supposed to get the correct screen in the first place. At no charge he will give me the new screen, but it will take about a week to come in. I called back (waaaaay better attitude!) but told him that I'm okay (instant tone change) & we agreed. I come in the next day during my lunch at work (not as nice as when I first walked in three days prior) & he said that this would take about an hour he's finishing up something for another customer. I said its fine I'll just wait here until it's done I have nowhere to go. I'd say maybe 10 minutes later? My computer screen was done. First of all, I am deaf to computers. I can use computers just as other people, but I have no clue when it comes to mechanical problem. I usually do not like computer guys because I have no idea what they are talking about. So it really stresses me out when problems happen to my computer. They can tell me whatever and they can charge me whatever since I don't understand anything anyways. I found this place on Yelp when I was looking for a place where at least people say reasonable price. I took my computer in, and the computer guy there, John, told me he'd call me when he found what's wrong with it. He did on the same day and explained to me in the language I can actually understand. He gave me the quote for the repair and also gave me the option of letting him to fix it or taking it somewhere else. (Of course I asked him to fix it.) If you don't know about computer very well, I really recommend John. He is the first computer guy I ever liked and I am going back to him next time anything happens. So happy to finally found someone I can trust on computers. read more

My laptop was locked up...wouldn't open Windows 7 with correct password. Spent way too much time trying to figure out what was wrong by all the standard methods. For $100, my problem was solved in less than a few days. I received a call within 24 hours to let me know what the problem was and I was in no rush and he still turned it around quickly. My hard drive was dying and parts of my registry were not updating fully during Windows updates. There is no way I would have figured that out on my own. Friendly, professional, knowledgeable and can explain what's wrong in simple terms. Anytime I need help with computer problems, I will go to and recommend him every time. Mahalo! read more

SOHO well deserves five stars. I don't have many programs in my Macbook Pro but over time it had gotten slow. I took it to John and 24 hours later I had a fast as new computer. He changed the mechanical drive to solid state and added RAM at a reasonable price. Because my computer is seven years old I just assumed it was time to change the battery so I asked him to do that as well. When he called to tell me my computer was ready for pickup he said he would change the battery if I wanted him to but his tests showed it was still in good shape. I am impressed! John could have easily improved his profit margin by installing a new battery but placed me, the customer, first. read more

I read the great reviews for John's work on Yelp and was happy to see he was located close by, making it convenient to stop by one afternoon and discuss the upgrades I wanted for my travel laptop. John was great; he offered to either provide the memory and RAM I wanted or go with what I had selected from Amazon. He quoted me a good price to install what I wanted from Amazon and clone the data onto the new SSD. A week later I was back with the parts and John said give him a couple of days. He called 2 days later reporting success cloning the data and installing a blazing fast Samsung 500GB SSD but the RAM I provided hadn't worked. When I picked up my laptop he said to come back as soon as I got a different RAM stick which I did a week later. John installed the Kingston RAM while I waited (about 5 minutes) and it worked fine. Overall I was very happy with John's professionalism, his pricing and his flexibility. When I decide to put a SSD in my desktop PC, I want him to do the work. read more

I've been going to John of Soho Computer Repair when he was on Kapiolani Blvd. and followed him to Beretania St. and always found him straightforward and helpful. He's there to fix your computer problem as best as humanly possible and without charging you an arm and a leg. He's helped me with viruses, screen issues on my ASUS, and always been generous with his time. After buying a Mac Pro, I kept my old Toshiba Satellite for sentimental reasons (besides it kept on working). Recently it gave me a notice to replace its battery. Took it to John and was told to save the sixty bucks if all I did was kept it plugged in and didn't use it for travel because the battery was only needed to keep it charged. The first time I used him we had been in Hawaii about 5 days living in a hotel. I've had an issue with my home desk top PC that is clearly caused by the salt air environment. I recently had a problem with my MacBook Pro display that was caused by moisture infiltration. The moisture left a grayish​ brown smudge inside the​ screen. After checking websites for a ​replacement screen​ and repair options, I came across Soho Computer reviews and decided to call them. I talked to John and decided to visit his shop on Beretania St. I was pleased with the discussion and John's repair assessment. He said it would take a couple days but would have a better timeframe after​ he examined it. He provided me with​ an estimate which I considered reasonable. That afternoon John called to let me know he finished replacing the screen and checked out of the MacBook and it was ready for pickup. He also informed me that the repair cost was lower than he originally estimated. I was pleasantly surprised! I picked up the computer the following day and am a ​very happy customer. Do not patronize Soho Computer Repair. I took my MacBook Pro there for a black screen and corrupted operating systems. I had vital applications that are downloaded legally from the Internet but some I have had for over six-10 years time. The proprietor of Soho Computer Repair told me he would back up EVERYTHING including the applications, and that my ability to get back up and running would be relatively quickly once I brought the Mac home. Nothing could be further from the truth. The proprietor wiped out my old Mac and it has NO applications of any kind on it save the MAC ones that come with a rebuilt out of the box Mac. I did not consent to this wiping of all my applications and data. This will destroy my business and I'm going to get fired over this because I can't make deadlines where the applications and data that my clients have given me OVER YEARS is now gone. It wasn't gone when I took the MAC there, it's only a 7 year old MAC. The proprietor admitted that the data could have been saved and now I only have my corrupted external drive of documents but not working applications. Do not patronize this establishment because there is no credibility about the integrity of your work, your equipment and you here. Dishonorable. Shame. read more

Needed a new screen for my poor laptop. Simply found them by typing in "computer repair Hawaii". Their website was very easy to navigate. It also had the function available, for me to e-mail them directly with my inquiry. I e-mailed at 2am and John replied promptly by the time I woke up at around 6am. Responses to every email were fast and answered to satisfaction. I was able to drop my laptop off at 1230pm, and pick it up after my class around 2pm. Overall a very positive experience. As most of us rely on our computers for, well, just about everything, you can understand my hesitation in getting my laptop screen fixed when a good 2/3 of it still worked just fine, especially as a student. The glass was intact, but something was wrong internally with the screen. It only needed a bit of a massage and a few nudges to get it to work. John was amazed how patient I had been with the screen issue for so long, which was refreshing since the word 'stubbornness' or 'laziness' can also come to mind. He is very professional and friendly. After less than 10 min, he went over the possible diagnoses and potential outcomes with pricing. He had the screens in stock as well. It was done in 2 days! $75 paid up front and $110 for the internal screen replacement for and HP Envy Laptop. I had gone to the Apple Store a year prior to get a quote on a battery replacement for my 2011 MacBook Air. At the time Apple had quoted me $129, but since I was using another perfectly working laptop I didn't feel the need to replace it right away. Take us forward to a year later, I brought my MacBook Air to the Apple Store to finally get my battery replaced and the employee tells me that my laptop is now considered "vintage" and that they no longer carry the parts to replace my battery. Other than the fact that my laptop battery could not hold a charge and would not work unless connected to a power source, I had a perfectly working laptop. The Apple employee referred me to Mac Made Easy who I called as soon as I left the store, and they quoted me $200 to replace my battery. At this point I was beating myself up over my costly mistake. Determined to find a better deal and shop closer to town, I came across Soho Computer Repair on Yelp. John contacted me a couple days later and quoted me $150 to replace my MacBook Air battery. Hallelujah! I brought my MacBook Air in today thinking it would take about a week for the battery to come in, but by some miracle John had the exact battery I needed in stock and was able to replace my battery in less than 20 mins! (it actually would have been even faster, but he's a very popular guy and there were other customers in the shop and phone calls to answer). Super stoked on my new working battery. John is a really nice guy and I would definitely return here for any of my future computer needs. read more

Let me add my high praises to the many already given to Soho Computer Repair! Wow. Never better service ever. I've owned several laptops and many desktops, many of which I've taken in to various computer shops for upgrades and/or repairs. This time, I had to take in my (barely one year old) Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga -- motherboard had blown. After checking with a couple of different repair shops and even getting one to look at it, I was not confident that those shops could do a good job. So I kept searching and found John at Soho -- I felt completely confident after just a short telephone conversation and I brought it down to his shop so he could do a physical check on it himself. In spite of being pretty busy (a steady stream of customers coming and going) he took the time right away to plug it in, give me a very reasonable estimate and when I mentioned that I was going out of town he offered to try and get it done before I left! I really didn't expect all of that, but was so pleased, that I paid for the parts in advance (as per usual) and left with high hopes. I heard from him that very day (a Saturday) with some questions about the exact model, etc. (as Lenovo isn't very good at putting that info on the back of their machines, so when you buy one, make a note for your files like I did). I was impressed that he took the time right away to confirm that (none of the other places I went to did that - they went solely by the serial number which doesn't give the full information about the model for the mother board) -- Then he must have ordered the part that day, because within a week, the part was in, he did the work, and checked everything out and then called me -- his estimate was so accurate, that all I owed was the taxes! I'm keeping his contact info handy for whatever other computers/tablets we may wish to upgrade or needs repairs!!! Seriously, I've owned computers since the 1980s and this guy is the best we've ever found in terms of knowledgeable, skilled, friendly, reasonably priced, and all around expert on repairs and other questions. He was very up to date on the latest technology, finding the right parts and everything in between. His shop is on S. Beretania, upstairs and down the hall -- parking at meters out front, or perhaps at the Safeway across the street -- worth the effort! read more

Soho was one of the first businesses I found on Yelp that had good reviews and was in a convenient location, so I called ahead and they said they'd be willing to take a look at my computer ASAP. At the moment, my computer is literally my life since my research for work is on it and I'm nearly done in writing my thesis for school. John (there are two Johns-- I saw the Chinese John) took a look at my computer and he was able to diagnose and fix the problem within an hour!!! Come to find out I needed a new battery for my computer. Even though my computer was plugged in at the time that it went dead, the battery seemed to have still been affecting my computer's performance and was short-circuiting the entire system. Altogether, the cost was ~$78 for fast and EXCELLENT service along with a replaced (refurbished) battery. I've taken my computer into another repair center where they charged me nearly $75 for JUST running diagnostics. The great deal that Soho offers is that it's $29 for diagnostics. Then, if you opt to go with them to repair your computer, that initial $29 will go towards the cost of repairs! Also, a new battery would cost me well over $100, and they helped me save money by supplying a refurbished battery. Before my computer broke down, my battery lasted for 5 minutes (if even). Now, I've got a battery that will last me for 2 hours. 20/20 hindsight, it was a blessing that my computer broke down since I ended up with a better performing computer after it was repaired :) I took a friend to Soho a couple of days later and we met the other John :) Both Johns are very friendly and helpful. My friend went in to buy a replaced refurbished battery for her Apple laptop (not sure which series). She bought one for ~$80! And the refurbished battery was nearly brand new (only was used to charge a previous Apple computer twice). Hopefully, I won't have another computer mishap anytime soon. But in the meantime, I'll keep referring everyone else to Soho! read more
