This is the French dip and BLT.

Great food for the price and very filling. I only finished half of my sandwich, and my wife couldn't finish hers either. Everything had a lot of flavor. I had the French dip with clam chowder, and both were hearty and satisfying. My wife had the BLT with chicken and rice soup, which was also very hearty and delicious. Definitely a spot worth checking out if you want good portions and flavorful food.

Trivia: Agaricus bisporus is a species of what three types of mushrooms? This place is so high level. Just wow. I was not prepared for the salad bar layout and selection. So many delicious options. I don't think Ive seen the likes of it since the old school Ponderosa/Golden Corral/Sweet Tomatoes salad bar days. The Greek chicken with a baked potato was out of this world as well. The mushrooms were plentiful and tasty. A generous helping of chicken mixed in. And the baked potato?! HUGE. Between that meal and the side salad, I had dinner and lunch the next day. Service was great. They are juggling all the things. Cleaning, takeout orders and even their kids. So impressed.

I was so excited to see all the various toppings they had at their salad bar. It was salad heaven for me. We both got sandwiches and shared a lemon chicken soup, which definitely hit the spot on a somewhat soggy day. I found the prices more than reasonable and would love to visit again someday.

    Lamb gyro. Delicious.

Delicious food. Fresh salads. Tasty, temperature hot soups. When you stop in to eat, make sure you're hungry.

Yes 100 times yes!! If you like a great salad bar, good soup and some down home cooking, Sophia's is the spot! Inside it's a very small cozy place so plan accordingly if you're a large group, It's also great for takeout or DoorDash. Service is good and you won't leave hungry. I love that they play country music inside, gives it that Americana feel.

Super friendly folks in a homey atmosphere with delicious family recipes. The steak and eggs was perfectly seasoned and cooked perfectly. The scrambled eggs were moist and fluffy with some tasty homestyle potatoes. If you have the space in your gullet give their salad bar a whirl. All homemade dressings with a large assortment of veggies! So glad we found this spot down on Spenard.

Now I understand the hype! Sofias is a family-owned spot tucked in the corner of Minnesota and Spenard. We stopped in for lunch around the holiday season and sat at the bar. There were a ton of people coming in to pick up to-go orders but the woman at the front served every customer with ease, positivity and professionalism. I was really impressed. The food was excellent and portions were big. I opted for the avocado BLT with the salad bar option. I loved the variety of the salad bar and the homemade dressings. The ranch was a great complement to my BLT. My partner raved about the clam chowder. I wanted to share the wealth with my parents so I ended up purchasing a gift certificate for them as a Christmas gift. Prices are a bit high but worth it. We definitely plan to be back.

Philly cheese steak, salad bar, and clam chowder

Great food and amazing service. We ordered the Philly steak sandwich which came with a soup and salad bar. The sandwich and salad were great, the clam chowder was good as well. Everything came in very large portions. When we asked to order a soup and premade salad, the waiter let us know that the sandwich came with both, and that the salad bar was popular as it let you choose anything you want. Definitely saved us some money. We all got bottled water instead of tap which was great. The tables also have sea salt and pepper you can freshly grind yourself. The waiter asked if we wanted some horseradish sauce and dipping broth with the sandwich as well, and it was great. Made a bit of friendly conversation as well. The restaurant was nice, with some nice wooden tables and stools and an MV playing on a screen. Overall loved this place and would come again if we were in the area.

Bruddah Paul serving great food in Anchorage with a Hawaiian atmosphere

OMG.. My wife and I flew several thousand miles from Honolulu to Anchorage and stumbled across this small little restaurant with BIG aloha as "Paul" provided the sense of 'ohana. The Gluten-free option was an ultimate plus and the out-of-this-world salad bar was crazy delicious. My wife had the BLT in "gf" bread and I had the run of the mill spaghetti with marinara sauce. NOTHING... I mean nothing was "run of the mill"... the food was super over-the-top 'ono (delicious), the service was warm and expedient, and the atmosphere made me feel like I was in a cozy restaurant in Hawaii with local "Jawaiian" music playing in the background. When they served in-house meals in take-out containers... I was a bit surprised, However, once you "attempt" to eat their generous portions.... you have an epicurial epiphany... the portions are so large, your gustatory gallop through the meal leaves a large portion of leftovers... so for your dining convenience, you merely close your take-out and carefully take it home and plan when next you will get to enjoy the rest of your tasty delight at home in your own gastric anticipation. Mahalo, Paul, for the awesome dining experience !! ~ Elena & Keahi (Kaimuki, Hawaii)

What an amazing hidden gem!! The owners were super friendly and polite. We had the chicken noodle soup and French dip - hands down the best French dip we've ever had!! We also split the spaghetti bolognese. This is a huge portion which will be had for dinner also! The food is super delicious and clearly made from the heart! Solid hidden gem in town

"Comfort Food" is the perfect descriptor of this place! The portions are big, the food is hearty and filling. Picture a big family get together, now picture your relative that makes the tastiest dishes...that's what this place is like! The ambiance is pretty sparse and lacking, so if you want to sit down with a large group, this isn't the place. It seems like it's more geared for take-out orders, honestly. I ate in and sat at the bar, and the service was very fast and very friendly, I was impressed! This would be a great place to take your parents, or, if you're visiting our state, a great place to get some take-out to do a group dinner at your Air B&B before flying home the next day.

Wow! This place is amazing - a true hidden gem. Burgers, sandwiches, pasta, chicken, steak, soup and a salad bar. Portions are huge! It's like sitting in someone's home eating a fresh home cooked meal. Fast service from amazing staff. Love this place!!

Seating is made up of booths along the window perimeter, tables thru the middle area and a large bar area with more tables and stools along the counter. The menu selection is surprisingly diverse. I was happy to see halibut as the fish for their fish & chips, as it is often cod or other white fish. I find halibut to be the best. They also have a few dishes with nods to Korean and Thai flavors. There are pizzas and dinner salads too. I went with their bacon jam burger for dinner. It is cooked to your liking and has a grilled apple, cambozola, bacon jam, arugula & house mayo. This is the best burger I've had in a long time. The flavors complement each other so well. If you are a fan of bleu cheese you will really love the cambozola. It is creamy and oozy and is amazing on a burger. My spouse tried their Cuban sandwich and didn't like that the pickles were mediocre and didn't add to the overall flavors, and that the bread wasn't crisped or toasted in any way -- the way Cubans traditionally are. He also took a chance with a appetizer off the specials menu which he imaged was Brussels sprouts however it was shaved sautéed Brussels sprout leaves, over warm couscous with lots of fresh herbs, jalapeños, and heavily spiced with bold spices like fennel. It was bizarre and not like anything we've ever tried. We liked some of the flavors but all together didn't make sense to us so we sent it back, unfortunately. Our child tried the Mac and cheese that came with purple grapes and sorbet. The Mac and cheese was good although I'd advise SRH to try a larger noodle than a small shell so kids can stab it better and get it in their little mouths. The sorbet must be seasonal/rotating bc it was cinnamon honey pear and it was crazy delicious. I'd come back for just the sorbet tbh. Other than that our red-haired bespectacled server was fairly attentive and quite friendly, even on a very busy Friday dinner rush. Parking lot just outside seems easy enough as long as you can grab a spot at busy times. Will be back in the future for the fried halibut (and sorbet!).

As yet, I have still not sat on one of the counter stools, but they are there! Just like on tv! And I, who has lived here now for almost 14 years feel such pride in our beautiful shiny diner, which in my humble opinion, is better than any I saw on tv, because it's metal. I challenge any movie maker (pfft, like that gonna happen) who might be planning a movie based in Alaska, and needing a 50's style diner, to find anything so beautifully retro, even in the Lower 48, and probably needing very little styling to make it meet their vintage needs. It has booths, it has counter stools, it has a lovely floor, great art on the walls. Anyway, I digress. We've been coming here for years, ever since it was still called City Diner. They have a good, large, wide ranging menu, covering breakfasts lunches and dinners. I've never had anything bad here. Service is great, and you're almost always seated immediately. It's always busy, but never seems chaotic if you catch my drift. I love that if you order a soda, they bring out the soda, as well as a jug full of said soda, so you can have top ups. Not that I drink loads of soda, I just think it's a nice touch. Today I got a BLT, husband got the Lika chicken wrap, I got fries with mine, and he got tots. We both got coffee, in a good old fashioned diner mug. They are always THAT style of mug, you know the one I mean, kinda got a slim waist, unlike myself. Food came out unbelievably quickly, I was gonna give 4 stars, but I just changed it to 5, cos you know what? Yeah, it's not fine dining, or an amazing dining room, linen tablecloths etc, but it is exceptional for what it is. So it's a 5 star diner. My BLT. Can I just say, this is the best BLT I've had in quite a while, and I get them a lot. Bacon was plentiful and the exact right crispiness, lettuce was fresh, not limp, tomato sliced decently thickly, and I'd normally pick it out, as I find it bland, and doesn't really enhance the sandwich for me, but I ate every bit of it. That bacon man, it was so good. So flavorful. The fries too, crisp and hot. He got that chicken wrap based on my recommendation, as I'd had it on my previous visit. He said it was moist and juicy, and he ate it all. The coffee's very good too. I don't drink a lot of coffee, but our server came round offering refills which I didn't have, but not because it didn't taste good. The worst thing I can say about this place is, I find it difficult to choose what I want to eat, as they have some very desirable options. bathrooms are very clean, and echo the 50's diner style, with the same flooring as throughout the dining room, and black and white tiling on the walls. Often some places dining rooms might be clean, but then the bathrooms are not kept clean - almost an afterthought. I'll continue to frequent Sami's diner, it's one of my go-to lunch spots.

There is still no jam on the table, but service is much better regarding the coffee refills. The menu prices are affordable, as they should be at a diner. Service was snappy. I got the steak and eggs and it came with toast and taters and everything was perfectly cooked to my specs. The vibe in here is great, it's unlike any other Anchorage breakfast spot. The real reason to come here though: it doesn't usually have a line/wait time, even on the weekend.
