Spoke to Don at SoCal Stairs about my exterior staircase and problems with corrosion of the metal on the steps. Don said he was familiar with this kind of staircase (even though there is nothing to support this on their site when I did my research). Without even looking at the staircase (or even requesting pics of it), he quoted me $15,000 on the phone and said I needed to know this right up front before he would even consider making an appointment to see them. I was a little offended by his brazen attitude and thought this was a rather steep price considering he hadnt even seen the stairs yet. I already began getting a real queasy feeling doing business with him at this point too. He came across as wanting to make big bucks from this project from the get go and seemed to have no consideration for me as a customer. However, I wanted his professional opinion about the staircase, so we scheduled an appointment. He showed for the appointment and as he came up the stairs greeting me, he let me know that this is now gonna cost $34,000 (and that he had driven by earlier to see the stairs). I stood there shocked when he said this...not just at the huge increase in price but at his brazen attitude. Stunned, all I could think of to say was that I could probably install a brand new concrete staircase for $34,000.00 (I could probably install a new room addition to my home for that kind of money but I didn't say that to him). Still smiling, he agreed with me and turned around and began walking down the steps (like he couldnt be bothered talking to me anymore) and walked toward his car. I just stood there in disbelief watching him walking away. At this point, I felt so annoyed that I called out to him that maybe he should work on his greediness. All I heard was a "yeah" (and he said it like he could care less about what I thought). I dont think SoCal even knows how to fix or build exterior stairs like mine, so why did he waste my time and his by agreeing to see them? Also, from the get go, it felt like Don's only real concern was making big bucks. He doesnt seem to know how to speak to or deal with customers as human beings. I felt like I was being treated like an ATM machine. I am amazed that with his attitude he even attracts any customers at all. read more
