I wanted to update my staircase from an orange oak original to a more modern white oak treatment with black balusters. After receiving several estimates, I emailed Martin Stairways with a few pictures of my staircase and some measurement. For the same scope, his quote was much less than everyone else, some by several thousands. He emailed a proposal and we scheduled a date for the installation. I was a little uncomfortable about getting this estimate without meeting face to face and wanted to see samples of the wood. Since we lived nearby, he was able to drop it off at my front door. Ultimately, I didn't need to worry because I found Martin Stairways and his painter to be reliable, honest punctual and pros at their work. When they showed up, I could have all of the detail conversations needed for the installation. Skirt or no skirt? How do I want the newel post? I could see the wood. No upselling or sales demeanor at all. In fact, he talked me out of work that I estimated for only by showing me what it looked like in other homes. I appreciated that. They basically woodworked and cut each piece of the stairs to fit perfectly with the space. Same with the painter. Cesar texted the day before and when they arrived, they color tested 4 different stains of my choosing onto the actual wood, on all four sides. This really helped me see how the stain would look on different variations of the Oak grain. They also fixed up the walls next to the stairs like patching broken drywall and sanding down and painting over areas of the wall that was affected by the removal of the old stairs. The work was all-in-all excellent. I had some questions about parts of the railing that Martin personally addressed before the painting. The painting and staining went without a hitch and couldn't find a fault with it. A couple of tips. Don't email Martin on Yelp, but use his email address on his website. He's light on the follow-up communication sometimes but very reliable. Learn about staircase anatomy and be prepared to answer questions on all sorts of parts. And if you have pets or live on the top of the stairs, consider breaking up the woodwork and paint across a couple of weeks because your pet will need to be sequestered. When they varnish, your best bet will be to be out of the house. Honest, reliable, reasonable. Couldn't ask for much more. Give Martin a try! read more

We wanted to replace our traditional stair railing with a modern one. Martin gave us a quote significantly lower than all other quotes we received. He said the work would take 3 days and gave us a date. We were doubtful because our experience had been that contractors give a time estimation that is lower than how long it actually takes them to complete the job (usually because they have started other jobs in other places). We just had Martin Stairways replace our wood spindles with wrought iron. I expected more expertise than what was demonstrated on our job. Only one employee was sent for the entire project. He removed our wooden spindles alone, with resultant damage to the existing wood treads and to one of the banisters. I pointed this out to him, and he responded that it was "dificult to remove the spindles". (Okay, but that is why we hired an expert.) The filler wood slats used underneath the banister/handrail are a poor fit. I had to ask him to fill with wood putty so we can try to stain that to match our wood. He was not going to do it until I asked, saying that the space was wider than the filler wood. Also, there were sufficient perfectly stained slats available for him to use, but the first one he installed was one with a portion that had an ugly defect, seen in the photo. Would he have used that piece if it was his home? He said he would not be able replace it , as he had already installed and drilled holes into it. He also had to fill in a very visible hole he made on the side of one of the banisters, but only after I asked him to do it. Other chunks were left untouched and will need to be repaired by us or a professional . The iron "shoes" are smaller than the footprint left by my old spindles, so need to be touched up. It's a shame the iron shoes could not be larger to cover the white edges...I would not have done the job if I had known that the final result would like this. Multiple iron spindle footings were left loose (no adhesive or poorly done), so I called Martin and he did send someone else very quickly to fix those. Thank you, Martin. Customer service is good, that's why 3 stars not 2. I know it was a relatively small job, but I believe that 2 workers together would have done a better job. read more

Martin does stairs every day all day. His guys do quick work, clean up, and even do a good job on finishes and touch ups afterwards. They demo, hauled away old, customized, installed ballustars, posts, customized rail, his other guys painted and stained (all said and done maybe 7 days tops). Fair pricing too. As an interior designer, I have worked with several different stairs companies and I have to say, Martin and his team have truly impressed me from beginning to end. On one of my recent jobs in Newport Coast, my client was in a crunch to get their curved staircase completely redone. They got a few bids, and were just not very settled with any of them. The other bids were confusing and inconsistent. I sought out Martin, explained to him the situation and right off the bat, I could I tell that this was the team who was going to get the job done right.
