UPDATE: So after I had the treads done, I had always planned on putting tile on the risers. I told Jesus about this and he recommended to do the tile first, but I didn't know what I wanted so he said, "no problem", we'll accommodate you. So they built and installed the treads with the tile work anticipated. They had grooves cut into the end of the treads underneath to allow for hardyboard and tile. Along the open part of the stair case he also allowed a space for this. When they were done w/this and I saw it, I thought, that's cool. Hopefully this will work for the tile. What I didn't realize at the time was just how precise what they did actually was. I just had the tile installed finally. I had 6 contractors come out. Almost all of them said the same thing - whoever did your treads knew what they were doing. These treads are PERFECT. As for proof of that, I've attached pics of the stairs w/the tile. Couldn't be happier, not just w/the tile guys, but the amazing job Jesus and his crew did with the treads. You should NOT hesitate to go with them to do your stairs or railings. read more

V & J Stairs did an excellent job installing a new railing in our townhouse. Andy was prompt with coming to check out our setup, and was clearly an expert. He asked if there was any spare flooring that he could use to match the stain of the bannister, and when we weren't sure as we had recently moved in, he suggested there might be some spares in the garage - which there were. During the construction day, he and his team did an excellent job assembling it. There were some mid-day changes, as they reconsidered how to handle the old metal rail, and eventually used it as the skeleton for the new. It looks great, and will be much safer for little kids than our old rail with the bottom gap. Very happy with their work - would gladly recommend to anyone. read more

In the spirit of supporting local business, I discovered a true treasure. The intention was to tear out a crappy old carpet in 3 large rooms and a hallway & replace with some kind of wood flooring that didn't cost a fortune. Real wood was out of the question for me due to cost, I quickly learned as I shopped around. The good news is that nowadays the fake wood flooring that's available is pretty darn nice. After driving all over South Bay, would you believe I finally found the coolest products at the best prices just a few blocks from home. In fact the prices at V & J blew everyone else's, including the big chain stores, right outta the water. And the service I got was no less than spectacular. This is a family-owned & operated business, and they've been in this business a very long time. Their brochure shows impressive photos of wood stairs and railings, including glass railings & wrought iron stairs, cable railings & mantels. They produce the custom work in their shop in Gardena. I got some custom mouldings along with my floors. And at some point I'll be doing a flight of curved stairs. Real wood has to be used on stairs so it won't be super cheap, but I can't wait to experience the quality of workmanship I've learned to expect from V & J.
