We went to Soba for valentine's day weekend. Overall I'd say it was good but we weren't blown away. First of all we didn't order off the tasting menu because you didn't get any options and we didn't want the duck salad. That was unfortunate. I think offering more options on the tasting menu would have been nice. For apps we got the rock shrimp tempura, fried pork dumplings and spicy tuna Maki roll. My favorite was the spicy tuna roll and my fiancé's favorite was the rock shrimp tempura. The entrees we got were the filet dolsot bibimbap and then for my entree I got the thai curry soup (sort of like a corn chowder) and the papaya salad. I think the soup was a little thick but the taste was really good. The salad was flavorful but I thought it was odd that it had iceberg lettuce. Would have preferred something less prone to sogginess. We got the cheesecake for dessert which was pretty different, very light and fluffy. Overall a good meal but I guess I had higher expectations. read more

Great food, beautiful ambience, definitely one of my favorite places in Pittsburgh. My table got the chicken and corn dumplings (fried not steamed), thai chicken curry and a vegetarian pad thai. The dumplings were well made and I loved the dipping sauce they came with. I usually get steamed dumplings but my friend said the fried ones at Soba are good and they certainly lived up to the hype! The pad thai isn't listed as a vegetarian option on the menu but they are so accommodating and made it with tofu and a variety of vegetables instead - highly recommend trying it. Overall the food is a bit pricey (~$30 per person) but the portion sizes are huge - we had plenty of leftover food to take home at the end of the night, so I'd say it's worth it. read more

I was in Pittsburgh for a business travel, was looking for good Asian places around, this was 15 mins drive from Pleasanton, I would say it was pretty busy for a weekday. I ordered tempura shrimp and the dumplings. Shrimp was amazing but I was very disappointed with the dumplings it was bland and the sauce served with the dumplings did not help. I ordered green curry from the entrees curry it self was pretty good,decent quantity. Price was definitely on the higher end (total was around ~$60) but worth for the food. I highly recommend the crispy artichokes (never had something like before!) and pad thai (the tofu, shrimp and grilled chicken are a fantastic combo), but the soba cali roll was just okay and not too special (wouldn't get it again tbh). This is a must try! This is a beautiful restaurant with multiple rooms. The dinner room, the lounge, some tables upstairs, and covered outdoor dining area up top. The lay out is pretty neat and j especially enjoyed the water feature they have in their staircase. Wanted to try a new place for date night, and Soba was recommended by multiple people. It did not disappoint! I was able to call and get a reservation for 2 the same evening (Friday). The staff were friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was nicely lit and lively. We had the short rib egg rolls, Korean fried chicken, and black cod along with some cocktails. All of the food was delicious! I highly recommend the masala chai gimlet -- who would have guessed that chai and gin went well together?? I have been here 4 times; twice before COVID and twice after. After COVID, this place went way downhill. The food is solid, but not worth the prices. The ambience is nice, but the service is terrible. I came here for my sister's graduation dinner with just my family (5 people) recently. We had a reservation for 7:15. We were seated right away and ordered food and drinks pretty much immediately. We ordered everything family style all at once, and got our first round of small plates very quickly. Then, an hour later, we got the next 2 dishes. Another hour later, we got our last dish that we ordered. Our server, Potter, hardly came to check on us and ask if we needed water or drinks. By the end, it was getting ridiculous. My sister had ordered another drink, and we had been waiting for around half an hour before I had to go track Potter down to cancel the drink and get our check. We werethere for 2.5 hours. The table of 4 seated next to us come in and out in a reasonable amount of time. The food is good. Rock shrimp tempura and fried tofu were the best things we ordered, and they were not too expensive for the quantity of food. The pork lettuce wraps were a bit too salty. The chicken bao buns tasted pretty much like any chicken sandwich. The steak in the steak drunken noodles was very good, but the drunken noodles were not made with the typical style of rice noodle found at most Thai restaurants in this dish, and the flavors were nothing special. For $29, the noodles seemed very overpriced, especially since there are several places in town where you will pay half of that price for equally delicious, if not better, drunken noodles. We came here for the Chinese New Year celebration which was an excellent concept in a dim sum type ordering approach. Though we here been here before, this was probably our best visit. We had the beef tartare (eh), tuna tartare (excellent), beef short rib egg rolls (excellent), artichoke and tahini (eh), scallop fried rice (excellent), and lamb dumplings (the best). The only negative experience was getting seated. We showed up for a 9pm reservation at 8:45 and we were told the table wasn't ready (several were empty). No biggy so we went to bar to have an apertif. At around 9 we checked in an the hostess said just a few minutes and they they'd come get us at the bar. Well, no one ever did, so we checked back in 10 minutes later. The girl who kept sending us away, confusingly said, "oh we can seat you whenever, there are several empty tables..." Weird. Food was just as amazing as it always is. You really cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. Lost two stars for service. We had a 7:45pm reservation and felt very rushed out when there was no mention of having to be out at a certain time. At 9:15 on a Friday night they started shutting lights off around us and pushing the bill when we still had full drinks in front of us. We would have been out earlier had the entrees been on time (which wasn't a big deal waiting because we were enjoying the conversation and atmosphere), but then it didn't leave much time to finish eating. Disappointing as soba is one of my favorite restaurants in the city and I frequent it quite often. Hopefully it was just an off night. read more

This place was ok - definitely leaning heavy on the fusion side of Asian fusion. The name "Soba" is very misleading to me - I expected more Japanese fare than there actually is on the menu. In fact there is NO SOBA at all on this menu which was a little surprising. I will say there is great ambiance here for date night or a business dinner - beautiful decor, menus, and also comfortable seating. There's also a lounge and the cocktail menu looked excellent! We ordered the calamari and soft shell crab bao bun (part of their temporary songkran menu) as starters. Both were a heavy, dense fry and were very filling. The calamari is big enough of a portion to share with a group. Overall, neither were the crispy texture we expected and kind of fell flat in terms of taste as well. For the entree, we ordered the shaking beef, which did not live up to expectations. It's expensive for the portion size and not well executed. The hot mustard definitely threw me off. Overall, was not impressed for the high price point of this restaurant and will not be back. read more

We finally decided to try this restaurant after hiding away inside from covid for so long. The atmosphere is trendy and chic. We sat in the bar area. Tables are nicely spread out along the walls, and they asked that we kept our masks on if we got up from the tables and also while the server was at the table before the food. I thought that was really good. They also only let one person in their bathrooms, even though the bathrooms can accommodate more. That's a small little thing I never thought about, but it's pretty smart with covid. I opted for the Tetsu old fashion. It was absolutely delicious. My boyfriend and I decided to order small plates to share instead of full meals. We ordered the double salmon roll, the crispy tofu, the rock shrimp tempura and pork dim sum. My favorite was the crispy tofu. It wasn't as crispy as I was expecting but the flavors were exceptional and the portion size was probably the best for the price we paid. The sushi roll was probably my least favorite. There was nothing wrong with it, but I felt that it wasn't as exceptional of a roll as compared to other rolls I've had elsewhere or other items on Soba's menu. We also ordered the chocolate pretzel stack for dessert. Not sure I would get that again, it's not an ideal dessert to share and I wish our server had warned us before ordering. It's very heavy on chocolate mousse with a few caramel covered pretzels layered in. Just wasn't as appetizing as the small plates we shared earlier in the meal. Over the years, I've tried a number of items on Soba's menu. Items I've enjoyed: calamari, lobster tacos, double salmon roll, white lychee sangria, hazelnut crunch bar. (A special shout-out to the lobster tacos. They are great. I especially love the peas in them.) Items I haven't enjoyed: pad thai, green mountain curry, lobster roll. Items that were just okay: long island duck, spicy pork lettuce wraps, banh mi bao buns, spicy tuna roll. One thing that seems to be consistent is the long wait time for your food to arrive. With each and every visit to this part of town, we seem to discover another quality restaurant. The food at Soba is absolutely delicious from the dim sum, small plates, sushi rolls, large plates and dessert. The Bao Buns were amazing as well as the Kuri squash dumplings. The beef in the drunken noodles was so tender, spice level and variety gave this dish a fantastic taste. Wait staff and servers are on top of their game here. The timing, preparation and serving of the dishes that we tried was spot on. I don't know how anyone could give this place anything less than five stars. We will be back for sure. read more

The pad thai was so-so; no better than a Thai restaurant where the price would have been less than half as much. At $27, this was just short of a rip-off. The coup de grace was the chopped salad (papaya, mango, daikon, avocado, iceberg lettuce, mint, basil, cashews, coconut tempura, spicy miso dressing) at $16, for what was mostly iceberg lettuce with a few garnishes. The sauce is what makes the dish. Without the tangy soy sauce, the kim chi, which has bay scallops and shrimp, the pancake tasted lackluster. Definitely to be combined with kim chi and the bean sprouts sides as well. As my main entree I ordered the miso cod. FABULOUS. By far the best cod I've ever had. The flavors were so rich and surprising with every bite. Atop the cod was a zesty lemony topping, while the miso sauce was unbelievable with a spicy kick. The cod was perfectly tender and just melted in the mouth. While the BBQ pork was less tender, I appreciated that it was lean meat. Along with the pine nuts and the rice cake medallions, each bite was a sensory eruption. Sizeable portion. For dessert I ordererd the banana split with bruleed banana, banana cake, chocolate ice cream with chocolate sauce, lychee sorbet (substitute for sesame, on the side), and condensed milk. Every year my husband and I alternate Big Burrito Restaurants where we use our birthday coupon. None ever disappoint. We had never tried Soba and boy were we glad we did. The whole experience was amazing. We started out with both types of sangria. The white was good until you tasted the red, which was delicious. We loved it. Our appetizer was the filet satay. Wow! It was perfectly cooked & seasoned. The meat was so tender and melted in our mouths. We hated for it to end. I had the Pad Thai and I normally love Pad Thai. Everyone raved about it, but unfortunately I don't think it lived up to the hype. I did not find it flavorful at all. I also felt they could have made it a lesser portion & charged less. My husband had the Korean fried chicken & loved it. I thought it was moist & delicious with perfect breading. The only thing I didn't like on the plate was a tiny bit of potato that looked like a sweet potato, but tasted like a bland potato. We finished the night off with the pretzel stack. A friend of ours loved it & I did not care for the taste at all. The decor and ambiance in the dinning room was great. Every year for my birthday I always get a big burrito bday coupon to use at one of their restaurants - eleven, casbah, soba are usually the 3 I pick from. This year was soba's turn. This was one of the best dinners I've ever had. A total surprise as frankly, I didn't think of Pittsburgh as a culinary Mecca. But two for two. Soba's ambiance is ecclectic and Asian avant-guard. Nestled in a newly gentrified part of Pittsburgh and close to everything. Entering the restaurant, we were ushered promptly through the modern multi-storied restaurant to a quiet part of the restaurant, where our very service-oriented wait staff was eager to make our night a memorable one. We started with the spicy tuna maki which was a tasty melange of tuna, corn nuts, avocado and peppers. My BF had a Thai Corn Chowder soup which was more like a succulent potage. We then shared the chopped salad, an iceberg-based salad with coconut tempura crisps, cashews, mango, cucumber, daikon, papaya, avocado, and all drizzled with a spicy miso dressing. This last concoction was heavenly. For a pièce de résistance, my BF ordered the Alaskan Halibut, delicately cooked in a pomegranate-based sweet and sour sauce, and accompanied by the brussel sprouts and turnips with a butternut squash puree. I had the Bronzini on lemon-grass broth, which the chef, upon request, fileted and removed bones and head, since it is normally served whole. This last concoction was absolutely amazing, with chopped buttercup squash, a slaw of apple and cashews, and drizzled with a lemongrass coconut sauce. The duck was cooked nicely and included a breast and a leg. The lo mein was excellent! It had a nice kick to it with some cherries that added a balance of sweetness. I tried one of the spring rolls as well and it was also good and crispy (I'm not a huge spring roll fan). The food here is excellent. However I found the portion size of the lo mein to be a little light compared to the amount of duck. Overall this place has really good Asian fusion choices and flavors on their menu.
