Great place to eat, very relaxing vibe. Mat was an awesome server! Thai Chicken Curry is a 10/10, 100% will be back.

I had an amazing birthday dinner here!! The server (Lexi, I think was her name) was SO sweet and made sure we were well taken care of. Food was amazing! The vibe was great! It was a *perfect* date night, all around! And I love the little birthday card they had set up for me at the table signed by the staff, such a sweet and thoughtful thing to do. read more

Soba was great. I came here for a date and ordered the crispy tofu small plate. It had jalapeño peppers on it, and I actually was sweating a bit for the first time since coming to Pittsburgh. Fuck this city and it's bland ass food. Anyways it was also very flavorful with this crispy sweet chili oil crumbles and it was great. I also was sitting on my phone and thought I dropped it, and the waitress helped me look for it and kept asking around before I realized I was sitting on it. So that was nice. The bathrooms are also nice and bamboo ish if you're into that. My dates food was good but it was a lot of rice in the bowl compared to other toppings. Overall it was an excellent experience with a great ambiance. Maybe next time I'll try some more plates and a non alcoholic drink (of which they offered many) to round out the meal! read more

Excellent food all around. The sushi rolls are fantastic. The fried tofu is consistently a winner. The bao buns are WOW!

I was in Pittsburgh for a business travel, was looking for good Asian places around, this was 15 mins drive from Pleasanton, I would say it was pretty busy for a weekday. I ordered tempura shrimp and the dumplings. Shrimp was amazing but I was very disappointed with the dumplings it was bland and the sauce served with the dumplings did not help. I ordered green curry from the entrees curry it self was pretty good, decent quantity. I got the chocolate and pista dessert( I forgot the name) hands down it was the best of all the things I tried here. read more

We went to Soba for valentine's day weekend. Overall I'd say it was good but we weren't blown away. First of all we didn't order off the tasting menu because you didn't get any options and we didn't want the duck salad. That was unfortunate. I think offering more options on the tasting menu would have been nice. For apps we got the rock shrimp tempura, fried pork dumplings and spicy tuna Maki roll. My favorite was the spicy tuna roll and my fiancé's favorite was the rock shrimp tempura. The entrees we got were the filet dolsot bibimbap and then for my entree I got the thai curry soup (sort of like a corn chowder) and the papaya salad. I think the soup was a little thick but the taste was really good. The salad was flavorful but I thought it was odd that it had iceberg lettuce. Would have preferred something less prone to sogginess. We got the cheesecake for dessert which was pretty different, very light and fluffy. Overall a good meal but I guess I had higher expectations. read more

Always impressive. Beautifully prepared, thoughtfully served in a tasteful place with beautiful locations in house.

Amazing food, amazing atmosphere, a solid 10/10. A friend and I shared crispy artichokes, soba cali roll, and pad thai. It was the perfect amount for 2 people. Price was definitely on the higher end (total was around ~$60) but worth for the food. I highly recommend the crispy artichokes (never had something like before!) and pad thai (the tofu, shrimp and grilled chicken are a fantastic combo), but the soba cali roll was just okay and not too special (wouldn't get it again tbh). We sat on the heated patio area which had a nice ambience but the wind/chill from the opened window made our food cold :/ (but air circulation was totally valid for covid concerns) I would prefer sitting indoors the next time I come read more

Came here for first peri-quarantine date night and was a great experiences. Ambiance - service was great. Social distanced within the restaurant. All staff had facemasks and they asked guests to comply when not at their tables. Decor was great - big open doors. Drinks - had a Thai mule and a old fashioned - both great twists on classics. We were craving some sake and the bartender gave us food recommendations on a dry one (Karatamba!). Would def get again. Food - we split a bunch of things as pictured. Faves: crispy artichoke and the seared tuna. Calamari was just okay- only thing i would probably not again. Price - on the pricier side but was worth it. Overall great date spot to split a bunch of small plates. Would be back. read more

Heard good things about the place, so I came to check it out. The ambience is good, and the sitting is a bit sparse in a big room But the food quality is very unimpressive. Some dishes are made with simple, very available Asian pastes. read more

This is a must try! This is a beautiful restaurant with multiple rooms. The dinner room, the lounge, some tables upstairs, and covered outdoor dining area up top. Wanted to try a new place for date night, and Soba was recommended by multiple people. It did not disappoint! I was able to call and get a reservation for 2 the same evening (Friday). The staff were friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was nicely lit and lively. We had the short rib egg rolls, Korean fried chicken, and black cod along with some cocktails. All of the food was delicious! I highly recommend the masala chai gimlet -- who would have guessed that chai and gin went well together?? All in all a great experience, and we will be returning. read more

Soba - Black cod was exceptional! And paired well with the masala chai gimlet. - Asian Fusion Near Me - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

We came here for the Chinese New Year celebration which was an excellent concept in a dim sum type ordering approach. Though we here been here before, this was probably our best visit. We had the beef tartare (eh), tuna tartare (excellent), beef short rib egg rolls (excellent), artichoke and tahini (eh), scallop fried rice (excellent), and lamb dumplings (the best). The only negative experience was getting seated. We showed up for a 9pm reservation at 8:45 and we were told the table wasn't ready (several were empty). No biggy so we went to bar to have an apertif. At around 9 we checked in an the hostess said just a few minutes and they they'd come get us at the bar. Well, no one ever did, so we checked back in 10 minutes later. The girl who kept sending us away, confusingly said, "oh we can seat you whenever, there are several empty tables..." Weird. Oh well. read more

Overall my experience here was good, but I feel like (as with most of the bigburrito restaurants I've been to) it was GOOD but not GREAT. 1) the ambiance: the restaurant was beautiful on the inside and I would give the atmosphere a 10/10. 2) service: our waitress was very friendly and attentive. No complaints. 3) drinks: I got the lychee drink and I loved it. My dad got both the sangria with rum and a Bangkok mule. The drinks were good, but pricy for our small town standards. 4) food: this is where we lose a star. Appetizers: My dad got the pork dumplings to start and while he liked the filling, the top crimping was so hard it was inedible. He said it made him wonder if they were frozen and then cooked incompletely. My mom and I got the chopped salad to start and it was delicious! So fresh and refreshing. Mains: my mom and I split both the tofu lettuce wraps and an order of the pork dumplings. The lettuce wraps were fantastic! A nice mix of textures and flavors, spiced but not too spicy (I'm not a spicy food person so it was just what I could handle). The tofu was soft, the chickpeas were crispy/crunchy, and there was a perfect balance of salt and acid. Highly recommend. Our dumplings were steamed better than my dad's, but I did not care for them. I didn't like the filling very much and I would not order them again. Pretty much nothing good to say about them except the presentation was nice. My dad got the duck fried rice and he RAVED about it. I was impressed that he got a whole duck breast on top, I thought it might just be little chunks mixed in but the portion was very generous and he devoured it happily. My dad finished with the strawberry KitKat and he loved it. He said it was very unique and "yummy." Overall, I liked this place and would come back. Just avoid the steamed dumplings!! read more

What's for dinner? (Tuesday~ March 10, 2020) Korean style miso black cod!!! To drink I had Tito's with pineapple and grenadine!! Meal specs: Black cod with pork belly, rice cake, bok Choy, ssam jang & pine nuts!!! It has a spice to it that I love!! The pork belly is very good but fatty!! I had to pick a lot of fat off of them. It seems like it's almost half fat & half pork! Only 3 pieces of pork belly came with it & in the picture provided you can see how much fat there was!! Not, my t Drink specs: Good. Sweet. Typical. Food was just as amazing as it always is. You really cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. Lost two stars for service. We had a 7:45pm reservation and felt very rushed out when there was no mention of having to be out at a certain time. At 9:15 on a Friday night they started shutting lights off around us and pushing the bill when we still had full drinks in front of us. We would have been out earlier had the entrees been on time (which wasn't a big deal waiting because we were enjoying the conversation and atmosphere), but then it didn't leave much time to finish eating. Disappointing as soba is one of my favorite restaurants in the city and I frequent it quite often. Hopefully it was just an off night. read more

I have been here 4 times; twice before COVID and twice after. After COVID, this place went way downhill. The food is solid, but not worth the prices. The ambience is nice, but the service is terrible. I came here for my sister's graduation dinner with just my family (5 people) recently. We had a reservation for 7:15. We were seated right away and ordered food and drinks pretty much immediately. We ordered everything family style all at once, and got our first round of small plates very quickly. Then, an hour later, we got the next 2 dishes. Another hour later, we got our last dish that we ordered. Our server, Potter, hardly came to check on us and ask if we needed water or drinks. By the end, it was getting ridiculous. My sister had ordered another drink, and we had been waiting for around half an hour before I had to go track Potter down to cancel the drink and get our check. We werethere for 2.5 hours. The table of 4 seated next to us come in and out in a reasonable amount of time. The food is good. Rock shrimp tempura and fried tofu were the best things we ordered, and they were not too expensive for the quantity of food. The pork lettuce wraps were a bit too salty. The chicken bao buns tasted pretty much like any chicken sandwich. The steak in the steak drunken noodles was very good, but the drunken noodles were not made with the typical style of rice noodle found at most Thai restaurants in this dish, and the flavors were nothing special. For $29, the noodles seemed very overpriced, especially since there are several places in town where you will pay half of that price for equally delicious, if not better, drunken noodles. Overall, I would not recommend this place. I only kept them at three stars because the food is good. read more

Our family was visiting Pittsburgh Pennsylvania for the first time and we were looking for a restaurant where we could eat dinner. We found SOBA and we enjoyed our dining experience there. This place was ok - definitely leaning heavy on the fusion side of Asian fusion. The name "Soba" is very misleading to me - I expected more Japanese fare than there actually is on the menu. In fact there is NO SOBA at all on this menu which was a little surprising. I will say there is great ambiance here for date night or a business dinner - beautiful decor, menus, and also comfortable seating. There's also a lounge and the cocktail menu looked excellent! We ordered the calamari and soft shell crab bao bun (part of their temporary songkran menu) as starters. Both were a heavy, dense fry and were very filling. The calamari is big enough of a portion to share with a group. Overall, neither were the crispy texture we expected and kind of fell flat in terms of taste as well. For the entree, we ordered the shaking beef, which did not live up to expectations. It's expensive for the portion size and not well executed. The hot mustard definitely threw me off. Overall, was not impressed for the high price point of this restaurant and will not be back. read more

We finally decided to try this restaurant after hiding away inside from covid for so long. The atmosphere is trendy and chic. We sat in the bar area. Tables are nicely spread out along the walls, and they asked that we kept our masks on if we got up from the tables and also while the server was at the table before the food. I thought that was really good. They also only let one person in their bathrooms, even though the bathrooms can accommodate more. That's a small little thing I never thought about, but it's pretty smart with covid. I opted for the Tetsu old fashion. It was absolutely delicious. My boyfriend and I decided to order small plates to share instead of full meals. We ordered the double salmon roll, the crispy tofu, the rock shrimp tempura and pork dim sum. My favorite was the crispy tofu. It wasn't as crispy as I was expecting but the flavors were exceptional and the portion size was probably the best for the price we paid. The sushi roll was probably my least favorite. There was nothing wrong with it, but I felt that it wasn't as exceptional of a roll as compared to other rolls I've had elsewhere or other items on Soba's menu. We also ordered the chocolate pretzel stack for dessert. Not sure I would get that again, it's not an ideal dessert to share and I wish our server had warned us before ordering. It's very heavy on chocolate mousse with a few caramel covered pretzels layered in. Just wasn't as appetizing as the small plates we shared earlier in the meal. Our bill was a little pricey, but we weren't surprised. The food was really very good and the atmosphere made it a nice date night. read more

Over the years, I've tried a number of items on Soba's menu. Items I've enjoyed: calamari, lobster tacos, double salmon roll, white lychee sangria, hazelnut crunch bar. (A special shout-out to the lobster tacos. They are great. I especially love the peas in them.) Items I haven't enjoyed: pad thai, green mountain curry, lobster roll. Items that were just okay: long island duck, spicy pork lettuce wraps, banh mi bao buns, spicy tuna roll. One thing that seems to be consistent is the long wait time for your food to arrive. Once when I came for dinner, I recall having to wait 55 minutes for the food to come out. With interesting menu options, Soba is worth a try if you haven't been here before, but be careful with what you order and be prepared to wait a while for your food. Had I went with more people, I would have loved to have ordered more small plates to share. However, I ventured to Shadyside alone. As an appetizer, I ordered the kim chi pancake. The sauce is what makes the dish. Without the tangy soy sauce, the kim chi, which has bay scallops and shrimp, the pancake tasted lackluster. Definitely to be combined with kim chi and the bean sprouts sides as well. As my main entree I ordered the miso cod. FABULOUS. By far the best cod I've ever had. The flavors were so rich and surprising with every bite. Atop the cod was a zesty lemony topping, while the miso sauce was unbelievable with a spicy kick. The cod was perfectly tender and just melted in the mouth. While the BBQ pork was less tender, I appreciated that it was lean meat. Along with the pine nuts and the rice cake medallions, each bite was a sensory eruption. Sizeable portion. For dessert I ordererd the banana split with bruleed banana, banana cake, chocolate ice cream with chocolate sauce, lychee sorbet (substitute for sesame, on the side), and condensed milk. Super decadent, but terrfic. Service was impeccable. Cool atmosphere in an up-and-coming neighborhood. Definitely an interesting Pan-Asian repertoire. read more

Every year my husband and I alternate Big Burrito Restaurants where we use our birthday coupon. None ever disappoint. We had never tried Soba and boy were we glad we did. The whole experience was amazing. We started out with both types of sangria. The white was good until you tasted the red, which was delicious. We loved it. Our appetizer was the filet satay. Wow! It was perfectly cooked & seasoned. The meat was so tender and melted in our mouths. We hated for it to end. I had the Pad Thai and I normally love Pad Thai. Everyone raved about it, but unfortunately I don't think it lived up to the hype. I did not find it flavorful at all. I also felt they could have made it a lesser portion & charged less. My husband had the Korean fried chicken & loved it. I thought it was moist & delicious with perfect breading. The only thing I didn't like on the plate was a tiny bit of potato that looked like a sweet potato, but tasted like a bland potato. We finished the night off with the pretzel stack. A friend of ours loved it & I did not care for the taste at all. The decor and ambiance in the dinning room was great. The lounge was beautiful and looked like a fun place to have cocktails with friends. We'll definitely be back. read more

This was one of the best dinners I've ever had. A total surprise as frankly, I didn't think of Pittsburgh as a culinary Mecca. But two for two. Soba's ambiance is ecclectic and Asian avant-guard. Nestled in a newly gentrified part of Pittsburgh and close to everything. Entering the restaurant, we were ushered promptly through the modern multi-storied restaurant to a quiet part of the restaurant, where our very service-oriented wait staff was eager to make our night a memorable one. We started with the spicy tuna maki which was a tasty melange of tuna, corn nuts, avocado and peppers. My BF had a Thai Corn Chowder soup which was more like a succulent potage. We then shared the chopped salad, an iceberg-based salad with coconut tempura crisps, cashews, mango, cucumber, daikon, papaya, avocado, and all drizzled with a spicy miso dressing. This last concoction was heavenly. For a pièce de résistance, my BF ordered the Alaskan Halibut, delicately cooked in a pomegranate-based sweet and sour sauce, and accompanied by the brussel sprouts and turnips with a butternut squash puree. I had the Bronzini on lemon-grass broth, which the chef, upon request, fileted and removed bones and head, since it is normally served whole. This last concoction was absolutely amazing, with chopped buttercup squash, a slaw of apple and cashews, and drizzled with a lemongrass coconut sauce. The dessert was their sorbet trio with the mango being the winner. The entire evening was a wonderful concoction of flavors and Asian infusion. A wonderful Argentine wine complimented the selections. I am a huge Big Burrito Restaurant Group fan (Kaya, Casbah, Mad Mex, Eleven... yum), but I have never had Soba before. So when I received my birthday certificate, I knew I had to use it for Soba. We ordered a few things- the steak egg rolls, rock shrimp tempura, and the chicken pad thai. And in COVID fashion, we had to order it to-go. Ordering was easy, pick-up was easy, and everything was packed up super nicely & transported home well. The rock shrimp tempura was DELISH- probably our favorite item. The chicken pad thai was very good as well- super flavorful & a huge portion. The steak egg rolls were not my favorite, but Brendan enjoyed them. Overall, we loved it. Dining solo so my review is somewhat biased because of a slight uneasy feeling doing so at this establishment. Don't get me wrong. I dine alone and have done so quite often throughout the many years. My point is that I shouldn't feel uncomfortable while doing so and some establishments seem to go out of their way on this point. I chose this restaurant as a recommendation by my hair stylist as a treat to myself after getting a great new coif. I walked the several blocks from the salon to the restaurant because it was a nice evening weather-wise and I hadn't really explored Shadyside before so it was fun taking in the architecture of homes, shopping, and seeing other restaurants in the neighborhood I want to try. Upon entering, I stood for a few moments more than necessary to be greeted. I was asked if maybe I wanted to sit in the lounge area; I looked and opted for a table, instead. I then waited a few more moments more than necessary when he returned before he made eye contact after searching for an open table. All I'm saying is that I definitely felt second-rate at the host(ess) station, whether that was because I was alone, alone as a woman, because I didn't have a reservation, or maybe my new coif wasn't as great as I thought (ha!). I don't know and didn't really care for the feeling. I did manage to stay; however, to be escorted to the top floor patio that is open but covered. It was an exquisite place to dine. My server was pleasant but definitely reserved. I ordered a glass of Riesling ($10), a fair price amongst restaurants. I also ordered Thai corn chowder and pork lettuce wraps, each coming to the table separately. The corn chowder was flavorful but the texture wasn't what I expected. It was more of a thick puree than chunks of corn. Though good, I'd order something else next time simply because of the texture. The pork lettuce wraps were excellent and plentiful to make a dinner portion for one. All totaled, the bill was $30 for the glass of wine, soup, and lettuce wraps, a fair price in such a beautiful setting. All in all, I would come here again but definitely with my husband. It's a great date venue but a little more hoity-toity and prissy dining solo (aka "pretentious") than I particularly cared for. Thus, 4 stars vs 5 stars for the review. read more

Every year for my birthday I always get a big burrito bday coupon to use at one of their restaurants - eleven, casbah, soba are usually the 3 I pick from. This year was soba's turn. First, I love and might be addicted to the rock shrimp tempura appetizer - so light and crunchy and delicious - you have to try! High hopes for the Chilean sea bass satays but I didn't care for it too much. Maybe because I love Chilean sea bass so much - it's so buttery and tender without having to do anything to it - it felt like such a crime to sauce up such a beautiful tasting fish - I mean they could've swapped it with cod and it would've tasted the same. They had a Korean fried chicken bahn mi (not on menu but should get if available) that was super tasty. For dinner our table got the dolsot bi bim bap x2 (yum!), tandoori grilled salmon (yum!), and a Long Island duck (yum!). Everyone gave it a thumbs up! And since it was my bday we had to get dessert and wowza - soba can DO dessert! We got 2 and shared and the combo of both together we ate every little bit- please get the chocolate pretzel stack and the soba banana split. So yum Oh check out the lounge - there was a dj and it was a great vibe - they also have drink specials after 10 pm - I'm going to try the khaleesi next time read more

I almost feel bad leaving a three star review because the ambiance and service were good and I had a nice time with a large group of friends. However, the food is so mediocre that I can't give it anything more. We ordered the oyster mushrooms as an appetizer and it was actually impressive. It set me up with high hopes for the rest of the food. But then, $27 for a plate of pad thai that tasted like nothing more than premade tamarind paste. I got it made vegan which I had heard good things about, but it was just tofu thrown in raw, sugar snap peas, and a mountain of unchopped cilantro on top. No garlic and no spice at all. My boyfriend (not vegan) got the bibimbap and was just as unimpressed. Way overpriced for what I guarantee is just rice noodles and sauce you can buy at the grocery store. read more

My wife and I came here for dinner around 7 on a weeknight. We were seated right away by the hostess. The inside is decorated with a modern new age Asian feel and a little dimmer lighting. It was a very cool atmosphere inside. I ended up ordering the autumn duck lo mein and my wife had the chicken spring rolls and a chopped salad. The duck was cooked nicely and included a breast and a leg. The lo mein was excellent! It had a nice kick to it with some cherries that added a balance of sweetness. I tried one of the spring rolls as well and it was also good and crispy (I'm not a huge spring roll fan). The food here is excellent. However I found the portion size of the lo mein to be a little light compared to the amount of duck. Overall this place has really good Asian fusion choices and flavors on their menu. I've wanted to dine at Soba for as long as I can remember, and I finally had the perfect opportunity to celebrate a girlfriend's birthday there! I arrived a little before she did and checked in for the evening! I was greeted by the kindest hostess who offered to check my coat (bonus!) and gave me the option to wait in the lounge or right there in the receiving area. Both were elegant and beautiful! Once my friend arrived, we were quickly seated. I would definitely recommend making a reservation because it seemed that everyone who came in had and the place was packed by 6pm! We started with celebratory cocktails, of course! She enjoyed the khalessi while I enjoyed the Asian plum sangria. I really loved my drink and she enjoyed hers as well. Mine was sweet while hers had notes of orange bitters. We shared the rock shrimp tempura as an appetizer and that was probably my favorite thing of the night! Crispy, flavorful - it had it all. Then we also shared an order of the pad Thai, a lobster taco, as well as the spicy tuna roll. Both of these were amazing as well! The pad Thai features chicken, shrimp, and tofu! The sushi was just excellent. By the time we had finished sharing all of these things, I was stuffed. Portions are not skimpy! BUT, It was a birthday, so dessert was in order! We ordered the chocolate pretzel stack and it was to die for! A rich, creamy mousse with a crunchy pretzel crust and a caramel drizzle. We could barely finish half of it because it was so rich! Protip: if it's a birthday, sign up for emails from the big burrito company and you can get a coupon to soba for a complimentary entree up to $30! (Most entrees on their menu are not more than that) We were fortunate enough to be able to walk there, but they do offer valet parking if you don't want to attempt driving to Ellsworth.
