We had a nice dinner here! Upscale feel. Kind of an older crowd, which was a little surprising, but then again maybe not since it's a little on the pricier end. Our waiter was kind and attentive. We got the chicken bao buns to start, which were flavored well, but mine didn't have a lot of meat in the chicken (there was more breading and I had a section of meat that was tougher). Our waiter said his favorite dish was the Thai Chicken Curry, which I thought was okay. It had ramen noodles instead of rice, which was different, but I wish there was rice instead to balance out the thickness/savoriness the curry. My boyfriend got the Halibut, which was the best dish we got - great sauce and tender, meaty fish. We got the ice cream for dessert (vanilla, chocolate, and Vietnamese iced coffee). The ice cream was delicious and came in a dipping sauce dish, which we thought was cute. Overall, I give Soba points for the ambience, service, and some of the food. Our experience at Soba was certainly enjoyable. We were immediately greeted at the front with kindness and whisked right away to our seats. The inside is casually posh yet equally inviting. To drink, I ordered the Hitachino Nest which was a delectable Belgium-style white ale from Japan. For our appetizers, we ordered the crab-cake egg rolls and the Chicken Bao Buns. --The crab-cake egg rolls were just as they sound, a crab cake wrapped into a wonton and fried. They were certainly good but nothing special, the remoulade included with them added a wonderful coolness and spice to the dish. -- The Chicken Bao Buns were wonderful. The chicken was tender and juicy, the bao was delectably soft, the arugula added texture and the gochujang honey was wonderful. We definitely wish more of that gochujang honey was included on the dish. For our entrees, we ordered the Drunken Noodles and Thai Chicken Curry. -- The Drunken Noodles were good. The filet was wonderfully tender. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the sauce had a great taste with an added kick that creeped up on you with each bite. The dish was a slightly elevated version of your standard Asian noodle dish, it was good but nothing special. -- the Thai Chicken Curry was great and surprisingly large. I expected the dish to be big but was still impressed at the portion size. Our served described the spice level of this dish as a 7/10. I am not the biggest fan of spice myself but I felt that the spice was more of a 4.5/10. Albeit, we all perceive spice differently. The bokchoy was perfectly tender, the sesame sticks (at least I believe that's what they were) added a nice crunch and nuttiness to the dish. Although skeptical of the pickled onion at first, it was a wonderful addition that I tried to add with each bite I took. The ramen noodles were cooked perfectly along side the chicken that is included in the dish. The yellow coconut curry was delectably spicy (but not overwhelmingly so) and somewhat creamy, I certainly would get it again. Overall: We enjoyed our meal and the ambience of the establishment. The items are slightly on the pricy side, but, the portions certainly reflected those prices. Our server (although I forget her name) was knowledgeable, efficient and friendly. We definitely agreed that we would go back to the restaurant, but, it is not a place we are running to get back to. Perhaps for a simple date night or special occasion. So good! It had been a while since I had been there. I loved it so much I went back before I left town. The mushroom spring rolls, crispy tofu and the lettuce cups were outstanding. Service was welcoming and professional. I love the lounge setup, on warm nights they are able to open the giant windows for the al fresco dining feel. They also offer complimentary valet! Enjoyed a wonderful Valentine's Day dinner at Soba this past February. Everything we ate and drank was delicious, especially the lettuce wraps, which were to die for. So many fresh herbs! The ambiance of the lounge/bar area is slightly odd, however - I wish I had known that the OpenTable reservation was only for that part of the restaurant, otherwise I would have called to ask if we could be seated in another part of the restaurant. It's fairly loud in that room and there's an unusual mix of furniture and seating heights. That aside, I cannot wait to return for more food and drinks in the future! I recommend making a meal out of apps and dim sum, and perhaps sharing a large plate. The appetizers are incredible! read more

I've tried this place a few times for special occasions. It's a very nice restaurant with dim lighting and lots of seating. The cocktails are tasty and you can sit by the bar. The food is ok, every time I have come here it has been too salty for my palette. The thai chicken curry was delicious and came with a large portion size but it was so salty. I love the ambiance at Soba, and the exterior does not do it any justice from how beautiful it truly is on the inside. My favorite is the waterfall wall! The presentation of the dishes appear more simple than some upscale places, but don't let that fool you because they still have great flavors. FYI- The chopped salad is HUGE and can definitely be shared between two persons. The salmon and shaking beef are fabulous entrees and I would recommend these. The sushi here was pretty decent too, but there was only like 3-4 sushi roll options. I'll definitely have to come back to try the chirashi bowl sometime! Our Dinner at Soba with Out of Town Friends was Frustrating and Unbearably Slow Two freinds from out of town visited recently. We made reservations a week before to go to Soba. Our table was ready, and we ordered three appetizers, and two mains, alongside some nonalcholic drinks, and some traditional drinks. All of the drinks came out in a reasonable amount of time except for mine. After waiting a little over ten minutes, I stepped outside to smoke a ciggarette, and asked the hostess if she could find the server. She did, and I asked him about the drink. It still wasn't there when I came back inside. A few minutes later the appetizers came out, but my very simple vodka cocktail was still not there. I asked him about it, a second time, and another server brought it a few minutes later. The restaurant was at about 30% capacity, and there were only a few people at the bar. We finished the appetizers, which took almost thirty minutes to arrive, and when the server came back to ask about more drinks, one of my guests asked about the main dishes. Another 35 minutes passed, and the server came by one more time. We asked him to box the food to go, both mains were brought out with too go boxes and we put the food into the boxes our selves, though we asked for it to go before it was brought to the table. It was an upsetting experience, after we've had such nice experiences at Soba in the past few months. read more

You really can't go wrong at Soba. Their menu offers a wide variety of food for every eater and also a variety of portion sizes, making it easy to split and try a bunch of things or just get something for yourself. For 2 people, we started with the spicy tuna maki and fried pork dumplings; then we ordered the beef skewers (amazing peanut sauce + filet), Thai yellow chicken curry with noodles, and the spicy pork lettuce wraps (amazing). We could have probably finished 4 dishes-- 5 was a little too much but made for good leftovers. Gave 4 stars because the curry wasn't as flavorful as I'd expect, which I noticed in some other reviews but was hoping I'd be pleasantly surprised. Still decent though! To be honest, it has been difficult to find true, authentic Japanese food in Pittsburgh. A friend recommended Soba, and after much arguing back and forth, we decided to go there for dinner. My reservation was that for a Japanese restaurant, there was a lot of pan-Asian food that simply wasn't... authentic. When I arrived, the decor was beautiful. The host was gracious, and we were quickly seated. Parking was also easy since they have their own valet lot. I ordered the KFC because good Korean friend chicken has been very difficult to find in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, the KFC was almost inedible. It was so salty that I drank a whole glass of water for every piece of fried chicken. Hoping that some noodles would calm down the saltiness, I looked for some soba. Surely, a restaurant called SOBA would have some SOBA. Nope! Only some Pad Thai and other pan-Asian noodles - how is that even possible? Surely, a restaurant should have its namesake! If you like Asian-American food or Pan-Asian food without much regard for authentic Japanese food, I'm sure you'll enjoy the food and the decor of Soba. If you want fusion food that is certainly not even wholly Japanese inspired, still consider somewhere else before coming here! read more

I have been to almost all of the Big Burrito Group's restaurants, with the exception of Soba, Casbah and Umi. I just knocked Soba off of that list since we just went there for my daughter Muff's birthday. (My child's birthday is actually December 31, New Year's Eve and getting reservations for more than a party of one on that date can be daunting. Which is why I asked my child for a suggestion waaaayyy before her birthday and continually faced an answer of, "I'm thinking about it" to my chagrin.) Anyway, we were able to pull off a reservation off f or an early evening meal for a party of six and our server, Missy was spectacularly accommodating and wonderful. (You must insist on getting her, if you can. Enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and specials. She is a diner's dream! Having driven past Soba 8,000 times but never entering, I didn't know what to expect inside because the outside is a little nondescript. Upon entry, we were really surprised by the décor; Peaceful, tranquil and calming with a Zen Buddhist touch. We were really pleased with the décor and layout of the restaurant. Now the food, we ate like it was a last supper. We ordered a LOT off of the menu. Here's what we had: Crispy Calamari $12 Korean Fried Chicken $11 Spicy Pork Lettuce Wraps $12 Chicken Spring Rolls $7 Pork Dumplings $10 Taiwanese Short Rib Pancakes $12 Thai Corn Chowder $9 Shaking Beef $32 Pad Thai $21 Ginger Fried Rice $5 With the exception of the Shaking Beef and Pad Thai, we ordered multiples of everything else so that everyone in our party of six could try what we ordered. In fact, several people in our party liked their dim sum and appetizer dishes so much, they decided to order extras and make a meal out of them. I honestly have to say that we fully enjoyed every single thing that we ate. Our stand-outs were the Taiwanese Short Rib Pancakes, Crispy Calamari and Chicken Spring Rolls. The Thai Corn Chowder was a considered by some a little too sweet, but I enjoyed it. And the Chicken Spring rolls were actually filled with enough chicken so that it was recognizable as chicken. (I hate when things are so minced up in egg/spring rolls that you don't know what the heck that you're eating.) Like I said, we really enjoyed our meal and service. Is it a little pricey? Yes! I've had comparable meals in New York's Chinatown for less money, but the ambiance wasn't the same and neither was the service. (I shall leave nameless the last Asian restaurant that I ate at in New York where I felt like I was being punished for being a paying customer.) It was our first dinner during our first trip to Pittsburgh. Our original plan was Noodle Head, but the queue was too long. We decided to explore the nearby area and ended with Soba. We were greeted by a gentleman at the reception, who was very nice and offered to help us set up a table even though we didn't have a reservation. Everything was pleasant until the food arrived. We ordered one Pad Thai, one drunken noodle, one Philippines grilled chicken, one curry noddle and one sushi. The chef must misunderstand what Asian food is. We were disappointed with all five entree. As Asians, we were very surprised how people could even mess up with Pad Thai, which is a relatively simple dish to prepare. My friend basically left the whole dish untouched because too much fish source was added, even though she's so hungry. The drunken noodle was another disaster. The curry noodle was super watery and salty. The sushi was of a tiny portion for $17. The Filipino chicken was the only edible entree. On the bright side, we like the environment and the receptionist who welcomed us warmly. 1 is the worst, 5 is the best. Soba was great. I came here for a date and ordered the crispy tofu small plate. It had jalapeño peppers on it, and I actually was sweating a bit for the first time since coming to Pittsburgh. Fuck this city and it's bland ass food. Anyways it was also very flavorful with this crispy sweet chili oil crumbles and it was great. I also was sitting on my phone and thought I dropped it, and the waitress helped me look for it and kept asking around before I realized I was sitting on it. So that was nice. The bathrooms are also nice and bamboo ish if you're into that. My dates food was good but it was a lot of rice in the bowl compared to other toppings. Overall it was an excellent experience with a great ambiance. Maybe next time I'll try some more plates and a non alcoholic drink (of which they offered many) to round out the meal! read more
