Good experience getting the annual smog check. There was a lunch hour rush of four car in front of me, and still I was out in about 40 minutes. Approximately processing of ten minutes per car. I would say that's pretty fast. There was a continued stream of cars coming while I was there;, so this place is popular (at least during the lunch hour). Tells me that this is the place to go. Kevin the tech and receptionist did it all by himself. I'm not sure if he's the person folks are complaining about not having a good bed side manner, but I think he was straightforward, efficient and polite. This place is a rip off....he failed my car after promising a big discount over the phone because it was a 2004 model. Then he said it failed "SNAP" test for smoke & had a smal leak at the manifold. He said when I brought it back for re-test he'd give me another discount. I took the car to my mechanic they said there was nothing wrong and suggested a different smog place a block away from Smog Star - "Concord Smog Tune and Brake" (across from ARCO by Costco). The guy at Concord Smog inspected the car did the test and it passed no problems. I wasted $40.00 here, take your car somewhere else. read more

I scheduled an appointment the night before for an 8 AM smog check. Unfortunately, the technician arrived late. When they attempted to run the test, they said the OBD reader wasn't able to read my vehicle and advised me to take the vehicle elsewhere. I did so and had it smogged with no issues at a different shop. If the equipment isn't functioning properly, it's a waste of customers' time. I won't be returning here for future smogs. read more

Had to pay $70 after $10 off from coupon then told me to take it to the shop which I did right after. They told me to go back to see if I could at least get a retest for free or at least a lot cheaper and if not to go somewhere else. This place has changed. The young kid, Christopher, whom is working today, 7/5/24 does not show any signs of wanting to be there or work there. Poor attitude, and a answers a question with his own question. Very Curt and seemed to actually slow down when my turn was approaching because of asking him about the waiting room being coned off from out front. Christopher seemed to intentionally become inefficient and not bring vehicles in systematically as my vehicle was nearing its smog check. Just an unfortunate business experience. Buyer beware, I took my Honda to this location without realizing I had a check engine light on from the day before. The tech had me drive into the shop bay and park. I walked away and within 12 mins he called for me to pay. He stated the car failed, I remembered the check engine light was on from yesterday. Initially, he quoted me a price of $70.75. When I questioned this, he insisted that was their standard charge. I was surprised because they had only charged me $55.00 three months ago. He asked where I had gotten that price as if he were fishing for information to see if I had found it online. When I told him about the previous charge, he removed $15.00 from the total, bringing it down to $55.00 for a failed smog test. I take responsibility for bringing my car in with the check engine light on, but I can't understand why the technician didn't mention it when he checked the mileage; it was indicated on the dashboard. Instead, he just took my money. I called another shop, and they informed me that if a car fails the smog test, they only charge half the price, and then if the car is repaired, you can come back for a second smog test and pay the remaining amount. It felt like this shop was more focused on making money than on providing good service. Be wary--the shop took my $55.00 and then wanted to charge me another $40.00 for a re-smog test, totaling $95.00. What a rip-off! When I tried to discuss this with him, I felt like my concerns were not taken seriously. Word to the wise: call around and ask about their policies regarding failed smog tests and re-testing fees before committing. read more

I see some recent negative comments about this business and the smog tech. The Smog Tech is responsible for his tech license. He is trained to perform a service with very strict guidelines. Sometimes we pass, no issues but, sometimes minor adjustments are required. This is a TEST ONLY (very honest) and this means they don't make any repairs or adjustments to help you pass on the first attempt. Sometimes we just look for the "Cheapest" price in town and don't read the fine print. If you actually perform the required maintenance and have it serviced by a legitimate mechanic, then you should have no issues passing smog at this star smog shop. I didn't pass the first time because a hose can come loose. I replaced the dry hose with a new one with full elasticity and second test was a PASS. I appreciate his professional work and honesty. I took my car here to get it smog and my service engine light was on, so I told the technician that it was on and he said it would not pass so I turned my car off and turned it back on and the service engine light soon was off and I told him it's off now can you try it and he said no it still would not pass I would have to take it to a mechanic I said I will pay for it. I had called the business and the person answering the phone quickly told me it's easier just to book an appointment online. Which I did. I have a older RV. There is a space for it on the reservation form. Put in all the information. A Week later show up to my appointment and of course the "technician" "small business owner". says he doesn't do anything older than 1999. That he totally meant to call me. Well, dude you didn't. I drove in morning traffic from another town with a recommendation and a reservation. I was going to leave it at that. Figured it was a drive, took the rig out. I'm not too sure about the snacks and what not that are mentioned on the website, Downside, no follow through. Apparently they have enough business and too busy to make a phone call. His comment led me to believe they knew of the reservation and again a simple phone call would have been sufficient. I could understand if I just showed up without their knowledge, but again had a reservation that was made a week out. Took my rig same day to another smog location in my town.
