Had to get a smog check, forgot until the last minute. Used the Yelp app for services to check locations and pricing. Star got back to me fast with the price and I had a reservation for the same day. Drove down three hours later, and it took longer to park and do the paperwork than it did for me to wait for the smog check and Star certification. Amazing help, fast, nice receptionist and tech. I called Star Smog and they gave me a quote of $63 for my vehicle. Got there and they told me my Promaster van is an RV, it's not ... it's simply a van conversion, and that it would be $180. They told me what turned out to be a complete lie that the RV classification is mandated by the state of California. I obviously said I wasn't going to pay $180. The woman said, let me check with my manger, came back and told me they'd do it for "only" $100. On top of the run around I got and the lies, the woman gave me somebody else's paperwork when I told her I was going somewhere else. That other customer was in a panic, understandably. I did the right thing and returned the other person's paperwork to Star Smog and got my own, which I no longer actually needed. I went literally around the corner to a place on North Main Street, no waiting, smog check completed in 5 minutes for $65 flat fee - out the door. No jacking around, no made up/fake RV fees, no lies, great customer service. I'm disappointed to post this as my wife and I have been going to Star Smog for many years without incident but I highly recommend you avoid them now. UPDATE Star Smog posted a response to my review so this addition addresses their response. This WAS the Walnut Creek location. I both called and got quote via email from Star Smog located on 1225 Parkside Dr., Walnut Creek. I have ATTACHED the estimate i received for $63. I stand by my review. It's time for this business to review their operating procedures and business practices. Charge what you like, even if it's not competitive, but never lie to customers. Be straight forward and honest with them so customers can make informed decisions. read more

I would give this business 0 stars if I could. I called ahead to get a car smogged and was told there was availability at 1:30pm. I arrived early at 1:00pm and spoke with the desk staff who said the machine was not available, I needed an appointment, and they would not do it. The staff member insisted I had not called ahead. She was short and rude the entire time, and seemed as if we were interrupting her even though there were no other customers in the office. There was no effort to schedule an appointment or come back later. I would not return here or recommend them. read more
