Seriously, that front desk interaction was absolutely atrocious. Customer service really starts with the person checking you in; you are the face of the entire experience, you know? I arrived, Rita collected my info, the professionals took my car, I waited in a comfortable waiting area for maybe fifteen minutes, though honestly it felt like it flew by, maybe because I was expecting a longer wait. I was selling a car and Star Smog seemed to be the best price if you printed out a coupon. The challenge is finding straight forward pricing. I didn't notice my registration noted Star Smog required. A lot of smog stations add an additional fee to the price. A Star Smog station doesn't do any additional tests, it is just a designation that they have been qualified to add. The pricing for the smog test and certificate was pretty good with a coupon but there was an add on of $20 for Star certification. KS Smog in San Leandro has a flat testing fee and the standard certificate charge with no add ons. I didn't have more time to go to KS Smog so Star Smog with the add on was the most convenient locally. I forgot to take pictures but you can find them on Yelp to click on their website with pricing and tests performed. Also, if you do an internet search for Star Smog coupons you will find different coupons that you can print out which they honor. They were pretty quick and popular. I got lucky and walked right in but there were 4 customers that came in after me. The elapsed time there to check-in, test and wait to pay was 30 minutes. It would have been faster but the guy at the desk had to check-in the other customers. Helpful and friendly too. Read the web site carefully so you are aware of the different charges you might incur in addition to the standard test price and certificate price. read more

I literally just called to ask if they accepted Apple Pay and the rude lady who answered the phone told me "Stop calling my place of business" then hung up on me. First of all, I have NEVER called this place EVER. Second, I kind of need to know if you take Apple Pay prior to wasting my time on my lunch hour if you do not. I also felt a bit deceived by the pricing. I saw a coupon online and knew there was a fee for the certificate. But at check out I was charged $25 more because my DMV renewal says 'SMOG Certification Required at a STAR station'. The cashier said that is an extra fee that goes directly to the DMV. When I researched it online, it says the business can charge a small extra fee because additional testing is required. I don't consider $25 additional on a $40 inspection a "small fee" and I don't believe it goes to the DMV. They also charge a 3% fee for using your credit card. Be forewarned, shop around and ask lots of questions! Response to Amanda: The $25 STAR fee was NOT disclosed until I went to pay the bill and questioned why my charge was so high. And the credit card processing fee was NEVER disclosed. The receipt just shows a total charge, not a breakdown of fees. And for the clerk to tell me the additional $25 goes to the DMV is a flat out LIE. That money goes right into your pocket. read more

PSA if you need to get a smog done do your research and get quotes. Last year when we went to get a smog we got ripped off. This year I did my research and thought it would be a better experience. Star Smog replied to me with an automated email with link to a coupon. Unfortunately when I clicked the link and looked through all the businesses their coupon was no there. They messaged me with a flat fee $58.75. Awesome. Great reviews, close to our house, done. The issue here was the front desk staff. When my husband got there and waited he was told to sit down after asking the price. When it was his turn she never called him back up but they took his car to get it smogged. When he went up to the counter to pay she tried to charge him $120! When he mentioned the price we were quoted she pointed to the sign that said to let them know if you have a coupon before work is done. He said she never told him the price when he asked. She pointed to another confusing sign with prices. Then he told her she never called him back up to let her know he had a coupon. She the says if he has one to show her. He had a quote which I snap shotted showing the quote of $58.75. She reluctantly honored it and charged another $8.25 certificate fee and $2.02 credit card fee. I cannot believe how shady this all was. He left there with his blood boiling and so was mine. How do you try to charge $120 when it should be $58.75 is beyond comprehension and so crooked. I honestly don't think we will come back but do beware as this seems to be common practice. The last place that gouged us was the Shell station on Ygnacio across from Heather Farms park. The lady never explained to me about any additional charges. She just handed me a paper and told me to sign it. When my car was done and she called me, then she told me the total payment, then I asked her is that with the coupon price.
