I walked in and was greeted not to long after by Chris. Told him that I needed a smog check for the DMV and he said that he would come and get me when it was my turn. I told him I was in a silver Nissan and sat in my car and waited. I probably waited about 15 minutes before he called me over to pull my car into the garage. Once my car was in, it took about seven minutes for the job to get completed. I was surprised how fast it was, which I highly appreciated as I needed to head back to the DMV afterwards. Before Chris started service he kindly grabbed a few seats, cleaned them off for me and I was able to sit in the little grassy area they provide. I appreciate Chris's customer care and I will definitely recommend this spot to others. He was a one man show but he got the job done efficiently, thank you Chris! Don't go there! We brought all of our cars here to get smog whenever it's due. Been going there for roughly 5 years. Every time we went there, the guy who used to work there was very nice and welcoming. This time when we go there, the guy was very rude. Doesn't feel like he wants to work or want our business. The whole time he was like just chill outside. We have no problem to wait but at least let us know how long is the wait. So, we waited for like almost an hour. When it's our turn, he was like I can't pass your smog since your car is too low. I mean we never have any problem with the car being lowered. His only explanation was I can't visually see the second O2 sensor which is very odd. Waste of time and was treated badly. Go to BaysideSmog instead everyone. It's only 5 minutes away from this awful place. It's not the same anymore. At least the technician is not the same guy. read more

I've never seen my mechanic so angry before! I took my car in to Smog Star to get Smogged. The young kid there gave me a "fail" on my Smog test because of the "Bulb test" (my check engine light was on), swiped my credit card, and told me to take it to my mechanic and come back after. When my mechanic saw the check engine light on, he said, "You mean they saw your engine light was on and charged your card anyway?! They shouldn't have tested your car and taken your money once they saw that light. Don't go back to that place." He confirmed my suspicion that these people are nothing more than 'card swipers'. They exist for no other reason but to swipe credit cards for that easy money. An honest place would've recommended I address the 'light" issue FIRST before testing & charging my credit card. Equipment not functioning upon opening business and my 8:30 am appt....a bit of an inconvenience, since I had made an app t, I was able to use another service within 3 miles, so that aspect worked out for me to smog my vehicle. Night prior to my appt. SSE e-mailed to remind me...ahhh..after the non-functioning equipment issue and my receiving service at another ...I receive a 'Thank you' for doing business with SSE and hope I 'enjoyed their complimentary beverages and snacks while I waited' I visited the website....no way a rat could find a crumb of who to contact via e-mail or chat. Phone listed is for the technician at the location...no good hollywood, owner seems to enjoy a facade of providing exemplary customer service ...from behind a send only web page. I find the process a bit laughable, as owner is idgas attitude, or clueless to issues of auto e-mails and due to Yelps positive feedback. read more

I was searching Yelp for Star Smog on a Sunday as I needed to get my vehicle completed. I found this location near proximity to where I lived in Concord so decided to check it out. I first searched for an online appointment to book through their website, but did not find one. I then tried to call 2times and phone was disconnected. So I figured let me drive over to give them a chance, it was around 9:30am and from visual I already seen one car in the garage and about 3-4people waiting in their cars outside. I already knew it would be busy, but all I wanted was an estimate if today was full, or if coming back later would be best? I walk into the garage the young guy barely looks at me and then I walk closer he asked - wait outside I'll be with you in a second. I proceeded to ask "is it best I come back for an appointment, but he didn't let me ask and took off his EarPods and brushed me off again and said I'll be with you in a second, wait outside" I understand he seemed overwhelmed so early on, but it takes a few minutes to acknowledge and let someone know if it will be available for service today, tomorrow, or how to communicate service being that there was no online or phone to ask for appointments. I am basing this review solely on the customer service and interaction with this gentleman and because of that I will not come back! I wasn't trying to cut in line I just wanted to be treated as a possible customer with respect. I came to get my car smogged, the person who assisted us seemed a little rude and short with us. When someone else came after us the guy took the time to talk with another customer but told us to wait. Our smog didn't pass which was odd because the car has no issues at all. After the failed smog I took my car to get checked out & mechanic said there isn't anything wrong with the car and was confused to why it didn't pass smog. I arrived 10 mins early of my 100 pm appt. I finally pulled into testing bat at 1:30. The interaction with tech was short, abrupt, and seemed annoyed that he had to deal with customer. THEN i made the mistake of walking into the office in hopes of finding AC. Oh my...he then became agitated and full of energy as he berated me for walking past cones in front door,( like i observed previous customer) and that i must wait outside. ( it was 90+ and i am 80yrs-dealing with heat is difficult). How they call themselves 5 star rated is a mystery to me. NOT recommended. Terrible experience here- poor service, dangerous health practices, disregarded appointment times, and possibly a touch of sexist discrimination. I made an appointment online and arrived 5 minutes early. The place was busy and several people were ahead of me. I went into the tiny office, and after a few minutes, the main tech came in to speak with me- NOT wearing a mask (and with no mask in sight). I was told I'd have to wait, and would be served after the other people already waiting in line. Although I was a bit frustrated that my appointment time was disregarded, I decided to stick around anyway. It was about 20 minutes past my appointment time, and a male customer in a nice car pulled in and started talking to the main tech (who was still maskless). Right away, the main tech let him cut the rest of us waiting in line (women, with appointments), with zero explanation or apology. The male customer started receiving service right away. It's Official; Smog Star Express is now my go-to smog station! To say painless would literally be an understatement. This place is incredible! I can walk in without an appointment and the smog test usually takes less than 20 minutes! They usually have a special promotion or discount going on, so my service ends up being cheaper than what's advertised. The staff is always friendly and courteous. The waiting area is pretty comfortable and you can help yourself to a complementary soda while you're waiting. Their price list is clearly shown on multiple areas of their back wall. I love that they can electronically send my results directly to the DMV without me even having to lift a finger! I recently learned that they can also do select DMV registration services such as new registrations, renewals, and title transfers. Showed up at 2:45pm with 2 cars in the service bay and one in line ahead of me. Around 3:00pm one of the mechanics comes out to the car in front of me and talks to them and they leave. Doesn't say anything to me. I go inside the shop and he says they're not doing anymore cars today, even though the website says open until 5:00pm. Mechanic says come back tomorrow. Rude and weird service. The person working had us wait over 20 minutes outside to check us in. When we got there and he said we need to go outside to wait. Okay. He was working with another customer in the office, which is fine, but why not just check us in and tell us to wait in our car instead of having us wait over 20 minutes standing outside in the cold? When it was our turn to be checked in, he rudely explained that he could not even provide a remote estimate of how long it would take. Careless, dishonest, apathetic & insulting is the best way I can describe my experience- then I was called a liar. Here's what happened: I went to get a car smogged that belongs to an elderly family member & hadn't been driven for over 2 years during the height of COVID. I informed the technician before he tested the car that the battery had just been replaced earlier that day & that I had driven the car around for about 20 minutes, about 5 miles or so, to make sure it was up to proper operating temp & that I could see that it was running smoothly before I brought it in for testing. I asked him if he thought that was sufficient and he said absolutely. He completed the test & informed me that it had failed- not because of the actual emissions- that was all good- it was because the car needed to have enough of a history in the computer to show that there were not faults that had occurred within the last 100 miles or so. He then said that there was no way the car could have passed the test since I didn't have at least 100 miles logged on it since the history started over when the battery was replaced. I asked him why he hadn't explained that when I had just informed him that the battery had been replaced earlier that day asked him if he saw any red flags before we moved forward & he just shrugged his shoulders. I said I thought he should retest it at no charge once I had logged the 100 miles, as I had already paid him for the test and he knew it wasn't going to pass before he had even started testing it. He then informed me that it would cost me all over again when I came back since 'they don't do it that way'. *Handy tip for those considering this smog station- many other smog testers DO retest one time for free if you don't pass the first time around. Call around and you will see. A bit frustrated, I decided I would move on with logging the 100 miles & then return to take another shot at pleading my case. When I returned, I began to explain the situation to the (different) technician that was there, who interrupted me immediately saying that they "would never have ADMITTED that it would not have passed the test in the first place, because they wouldn't risk having to do a retest'. To this I replied that I certainly wasn't making up their technician said. He then said that I was making it up and that I was a liar. I told him I was insulted that he called me a liar and he asked me what I was going to do about it. Really? This is who they have working with the general public? Someone who's social skills are limited to apathetic hostility? I told him that because of the way he had just treated me I would be sharing it on Yelp & be contacting the store owner. He replied that he didn't care what I did & that they have plenty of customers. Overall a terrible and completely avoidable experience that left me $80 poorer with nothing to show for it and having to deal with someone who behaved like they were raised in prison. My impression was that their agenda is limited to bringing in cash without letting inconveniences like morals, ethics or running an honest business get in the way to slow things down. One last thing- their prices are higher than many of their competitors. The 76 station down the street is $20 cheaper & open on Saturday- and they are professional and operate with ethics. I originally went to this shop because it was open late on a weekend & I hadn't had an opportunity to schedule an appointment in advance due to the whole situation falling into my lap at the last minute. Walked into the office to be told to wait outside for my turn- no check in, no greeting- just go outside. No seating anymore inside or outside...so standing in the cold. Luckily it wasn't raining. There were 2 people ahead of me also waiting around. After seeing how slow and inconsiderate the "technician" was, I realized I wouldn't be done for at least another hour. I brought my Ford Ranger in for its DMV-mandated inspection on 10/01/2022. It failed within the category of Catalyst. No definitive explanation was given for this failure. Due to a botched theft attempt requiring repairs, I had to return to the muffler shop that fixed my damaged catalytic converter. The welds were reinspected with no signs of leakage. Next to my regular repair shop to check the air intake system. No problems were found. Next to another smog station that re-tested the truck and found no problems, it passed. This consumed a full morning running around and resulted in another shop's Smog inspection $50 charge. I'm out $70 because of Smog Star's incorrect assessment. I'd give this shop 0 Stars if I could. Find another place for sure. read more

The kid there failed my smog because I had a "modification" that had nothing to do with emissions, it was a safety modification for that motor but what does he know lol this place just wants to take your money and send you off regardless if you pass or not. Upon arrival I was greeted by Robert who was in the middle of working on a truck, he stopped what he was doing to come and check on my needs(First sign of great customer service ). Once I stated that we spoke on the phone he kicked everything in together . He had all the forms ready to go and got straight to work. In all of my years of getting a Smog I've never seen someone work so diligently and fast in an environment where they are by themselves. Ladies, if you want to do yourself a favor, don't schedule your smog test here. That is unless you want to be treated rudely, delayed for your appointment by 15+ minutes (even when you arrive on time for a SCHEDULED appointment), and then be ignored. I made a few calls and was on my way to Super Station just down the street in no time. I pulled up to Super Station and they immediately pulled my car into their shop and began the test, even WITHOUT an appointment. They were LESS EXPENSIVE, as well. I was done with the test and my car PASSED IT within 10 minutes. My certificate was also sent to the State of CA by Super Station. Safe time, hassle, and a rude experience by starting off at Super Station. Skip Smog Star Express. They are not a star, in my estimation. read more

Coupon was basically useless because its the same discount you get for making an appointment, something they don't tell you. Dishonest..... That's the best word to describe my visit to this establishment. I came to this place to get a smog on my BMW. Guy that helped me was attentive upon my arrival and asked me to wait, after a few minutes it was my turn. He took yhe car in and started hooking up the cables for the service, while this was taking place I asked If I could retest if needed as my car hadn't been used in a couple weeks, he proceeded and said "yes you can" also informed him my service engine soon light was on. I waited a few minutes and he took me in the office, while in there he told me it didn't pass, and I could retest for a $40 or $60 dollar amount again! I was like what?! But I guess it was my mistake for not being specific about FREE retest as most smog places do, so I take the blame for that BUT this is where the honesty part comes in, first he should've clarified extra charge for retesting, second. An honest person would've told me it might or may not pass if the service engine light was on, I say this because this was the first thing the person told me when I took it to get smogged at another place as clearly I didn't want to give my business to this place again, so this new guy told me I should run the car for at least 30 miles before attempting to smog it ad the car hasn't been used much. And guess what?! I did just that and the car passed! So the whole moral of the story is to not always trust the first place you go to and do your research AND ask the right questions before you get cheated this way. I do want to recognize this place gave me a 20 dollar coupon but the overall dishonest experience leaves a sour taste on your mouth and makes you wanna go somewhere else. Just like I did! read more
