Every other year the DMV registration renewal notice arrives with the paperwork for a smog check. And that smog check--while good for the environment--is, for most of us, an added expense that's a slight inconvenience at best and a headache at worst. While I have mechanics and others to whom I am loyal, I've always navigated uneven terrain with smog checks, often going for a place running a special. The service has sometimes been all right, other times indifferent to unashamedly annoyed, and the wait times have ranged from a few minutes to hours. This year, when that DMV renewal came, I took a chance and chose at random a place closer to home: Smog Guys. And what a wonderful surprise. Were they the cheapest? No. Was the cost within "normal limits"? Absolutely. Were they fast, professional, friendly, and thorough? Without question--and that's why I'm now a fan of Smog Guys and why you should consider taking your vehicle there for your catalytic and smog needs. When I arrived, I was wary. But even though I had no appointment, I was welcomed into the little office and offered not only a comfortable place to sit and refreshments on what was a hot and uncomfortable day, but also genuine hospitality. The receptionist was such a pleasure--friendly, expeditious with my paperwork, understood my needs, and happy to engage in a wide-ranging and candid conversation. Other customers came and went, and each received her full attention. The flow was steady and brisk. Out the office window, I could see the technician on the floor, and he wasn't wasting a moment. Vehicles came in, and like the pro he was, he seemed to know every make and model he looked at. Fast, focused, and precise. When he popped into the office to say my vehicle was ready, I was stunned--so soon? Was that right? It sure was. Everything had been done right. There were no issues, no up-sell attempts, just a clean bill of health for the DMV, a thank-you, and a smile. As I was getting into my car, I paused and asked the tech if he knew a place that specialized in a particular make--my girlfriend's car had been giving trouble, and she'd gotten conflicting diagnoses and outrageous estimates elsewhere. He searched his computer, then said, "If you trust me, I have a friend who works at a good shop not far from here." He wrote down the address and number. Later, my girlfriend took her car there and got a completely different diagnosis and an estimate that was a fraction of what she'd been quoted. They got her business. So my experience at Smog Guys turned into a win all around--and even beyond Smog Guys itself. Going forward, I'm sticking with Smog Guys. If you value great customer service, reasonable prices, and top-tier work, you should check them out. I recommend them without reservation. read more

Where do I begin......brought my 2001 diesel truck, after being repaired, here for smog test. No waiting, but failed the test. was told "engine computer"needed to reset before test could be completed. James explained I just needed to drive the truck, allowing the computer to "reset". I was allowed a window of 30 days to retest, as many times necessary, with no extra charge. It took 5 visits (and driving over 200 miles) before truck computer finally reset and test could be completed and "smog certificate"automatically sent to DMV. Each visit James was polite and accommodating ! He even printed out instructions on how to drive the truck to hasten the reset ! I would be remiss not to mention Kamal, the technician who was responsible for completing the last test !Great service and I will recommend anyone to have their vehicle smogged at "The Smog Guys". btw-James is now at the Antioch outlet and I would recommend anyone to "pay him a visit". I brought my 1999 Ford crown Victoria in yesterday to have it smogged. I have been going to the shop for many years now and never had a problem. The technician that works on my car was unfamiliar with this model.For starters he said he had disabled the traction control which he found in the glove box.After about 15 minutes he came back in the office to tell me it didn't pass and that he had a problem with it. He said the engine overheated and coolant all over the floor. And the check engine light came on. He said the coolant was gushing out around The cap to the overflow . So I parked it nearby and got a ride home. After returning an hour later with tools and plenty of water I refilled the Radiator with only 1 gallon of water to fill to top. I drove home through Concord instead of going on the freeway because of traffic. The car didn't overheat, And the Radiator didn't leak a drop. I plugged in my code reader and it shows 3 fault codes. 1299 Cylinder head over temperature protection active. 306 misfire cylinder 6. 308 misfire cylinder 8. After reading the repair book for my car I figured out why the check engine light came on. What I don't understand is what caused the engine to overheat so badly. The technician wasn't paying attention to the temperature gauge And didn't shut the car off when he saw it was in the red zone and coolant was gushing out of the Radiator. I would expect a smog technician would have at least a little experience with the basics of automotive repair and what not to do. If you see coolant gushing out and the temperature gauge slowly getting hotter it's common sense to immediately turn off the engine before it overheats so badly. Im going to talk with the owner or shop supervisor about what happened and I'm hoping that his negligence hasn't caused any serious damage to the engine. Overheating the engine could cause the cylinder heads to warp and then you have a blown head gasket and possible cylinder, valves, piston and ring damage. All very costly repairs. read more

My catalytic converter was stolen about the time I needed to renew my registration with smog test, so I had it replaced at West Coast Muffler, which is right next to MN Star Smog. But I came across them on Yelp before really paying attention. So, I took it to them, but there was a problem - I needed to put more miles on it for the smog computer to gather its data. So, I had to drive it for a few days, and returned where it passed the test with no problem. The owner, Melvin I believe, was very nice, and the total charge was $50 exactly, which was just what he had quoted, and cheaper than any other place I checked, including the place I used to go which was usually pretty cheap. The car is 20 years old, but no extra charge for that like some places. They do not make appointment, just show up. But there was just a short wait the first time, which I didn't really mind as the people around there were very friendly, including the muffler shop which had music going while they worked. I went back to the muffler shop a few days later to get some security added to the cat for $200. read more
