Last April 2025, I had them come out to New Lenox to trim mulberry trees and to remove a debris pile. The kind lady came out was on time gave me an estimate I agreed to it that night. They came out two weeks later after heavy rain. They decided to pull their truck and other machines in the back yard. they got stuck in three different places tire marks and divots all over. They spent more time getting those stuck trucks stuck out than trimming the mullberry trees. I man came over a week later to fill the tread marks with black dirt, They only loaded the guys truck with not even half full of dirt. He laid down all that he had. and said the other marks will flatten with rain water.. NOPE!! The man that cuts my grass complains about all the bumps. I called twice in 2025 to complain nobody returned my calls. It's 2026 it looks no different. I do not have photos to post (don't own a smart phone or camera). I picked Smitty's because I live in Justice at one to me and were well known. Really disappointed. Looking at it today I got a pit in my stomach. read more

I called Smitties Tree Service to come out and give me an estimate on trimming two of my neighbor's trees that are hovering over my property. They told me that they would send me an estimator who will be there between one and three days and that person would call when en route. I placed 2 calls on the third day and the estimator showed up at 6:00 PM ish. Long story short, I agreed to let them do the work and we set up a day that worked for both me and my neighbor (since they had to use their driveway) I called them to confirm the date set and also confirm what time they would be there. We agreed that they would start in the morning. Within 18 hours of when the work was to start they called and canceled. I was told that they had to push me back two weeks because of the storms that happened 2 days ago. Obviously, emergency work pays better than scheduled work so I became second fiddle. If you're looking for a company that is well managed, with business integrity and are not looking to set up tentative work dates you may want to look elsewhere. read more

A neighbor used this service to cut off several limbs off of our backyard tree. The tree service did not contact us about what they were going to do on the day of service. I find this behavior to be unprofessional. I am worried the exposed limbs are subject to insects and other problems that will effect its lifespan. It is over 60 years old. You can tell they know what their doing by the way the maneuver the truck and control their cherry picker. Hired them to trim two trees. Completely hacked them apart. Refused to take responsibility, their offer was to apply fertilizer and see if it improves next year. The cost of trimming this tree was about five times the cost of others and for what? DO NOT RECOMMEND. Update in response to Smittys: removing the tree was never an option you gave me, I would've gladly accepted that. I had another landscaper do that which is why I asked you to review the bill prior to me paying it in full, which I did. If you want to resolve this pay for the removal I had done separately. They showed up right when they said they would. They did a great job on our 3 huge trees and cleaned up nicely. Had a large tree cut down in our backyard. Smitty's rep agreed to leave firewood in a designated spot. The crew was professional and I have no complaints on their workmanship. I had asked the foreman to have 1 additional limb cut off of another tree for an additional cost. The rep showed up and was upset about the additional work. I asked her to add it to the bill, which she declined. A little later 2 more company reps showed up and claimed that placing the logs where they were was not what was agreed upon. Again, I offered additional compensation, which they refused. The contract did not reflect the verbal agreement made regarding the firewood. So they stopped the crew and left the job. Now I have very large logs in my yard and a stump about 4' off the ground to deal with. read more

Smitty's is in this business to make money, and uses highly questionable business practices. They trim trees severely and over-thin trees. Their practices include limb stripping, lion tailing, and interior thinning and removal of large diameter branches, all of which are highly damaging to trees. Limb stripping causes water shoots and suckers to sprout and ultimately stresses the tree and leads to it's decline. Lion tailing leaves a tassel foliage at the tip of a branch, and acts as a wind sail to increase moment at the base of the branch. They do not practice arborist accepted methods of trimming trees. Many trees in neighborhoods they service decline in health after Smitty's over-trims them. Smitty's is all too eager to cut down trees in future trimming cycles. They favor tree removal vs. actual tree improvement or betterment. They do not act in the better interest of the tree or attempt to improve tree health. This review represents my opinion, and is based on large scale magnitude of observation and inspection of trees that Smitty's has trimmed. They basically sweep through a neighborhood and severely butcher the trees. They damage the aesthetics of the neighborhood and weaken the health of trees. Getting paid for quantity of work rather than pruning for improvement. read more

We had noticed that Smitty's had been chosen by the Village of Hinsdale to handle the trimming of parkway trees so we gave them a call. The quoted price was very reasonable and they came out within days. The crew was friendly, extremely efficient, and considerate. Absolute worst experience ever! DO NOT HIRE THEM FOR ANYTHING! I purchased my new home in June and immediately needed some trees and stumps removed in order to have a privacy fence installed. I received a quote from the fence company and they informed me that I needed to have stumps removed before they can install a privacy fence so I began my search for a STUMP REMOVAL COMPANY. I ran across a Smitty's tree removal truck and immediately called them. I was under the impression that they are a STUMP/TREE REMOVAL COMPANY, however THEY ARE NOT... They literally have one machine that half way grinders the the stump and leaves roots, and stumps. Smitty's sent an estimator named Jon out to do the estimate. Jon came and ensured they would remove all the stumps. When the technician arrived, he came with a big grinding machine that wouldn't allow him to even remove the roots or get near the stumps of the tree or weave through the existing fence. The technician informed me that he would come back with a different tool to finish the job. HE NEVER showed up and I later found out thats they only use one machine. I constantly called Jon to figure out the plan to finish the job. He never answered or responded to messages then one day he showed up unannounced to my house while I was at work. Nobody ever calls in advance to schedule an appointment or confirm a proper time! They just show up unannounced and expect you to be there. That's the most unprofessional stuff Ive EVER seen. The estimator, Jon is the absolute worst and will disappear and ignore your calls and messages. So I called the main office regarding his lack of communication and the incomplete job. They assigned another estimator, Sandy, to my case because I refused to pay ANYTHING until my job was complete! Months and months past and they continued to contact me regarding payment, but NOT about a resolution to complete the job or have a satisfied customer. As I was on my way home from work yesterday evening, Sandy showed up to my house unannounced, without communicating or confirming a proper appointment and was walking around on my property. I noticed it on my cameras and met her at my house. Im not sure why Smitty's thinks it's acceptable to show up unannounced without confirming a time. Anywho, I strategically pointed out EVERY stump that wasn't removed and every root that wasn't removed and voiced my frustration and disappointment (See all pictures below). We settled on half payment because it was a half ass job! They only have one machine.. No saws or actual tree removal equipment. So after all that, I still have to find a company and pay additional money to actually have the stumps removed. Stay away from Smitty's!! We hired Smitty's to remove several trees from our yard. They continued working into the dark. Due to it being dark we wre unable to properly inspect. They ensured us all the tree roots were all removed. There was a section in the yard they couldn't get to until the fence was removed and said they would return to complete that area. We wanted to pay them 70% of the bill until the job was complete. They insisted full payment and promised they would return to complete. After going back and forth we paid them in full. The following morning when we could properly inspect the area where they worked we found lots of tree roots left behind. We called them to come back. They were removing a stump and in the process damaged my parents siding/trim on their garage. In Covid, my Mom and Dad haven't been going out very much, so they didn't notice the damage immediately. When they called Smitty's to report the damage later, they refused to take responsibility or even come out and look at it! They blamed it on the lawn guys. We are heartbroken at the devastation to a beautiful maple tree that had been here before us, over 45 years. I told the estimator (who came out in regard to another tree that was falling down)that I wanted the branches trimmed that were overhanging our second floor, which could break off in a storm and cause damage. She emailed a contract while we were out of town, August 6, 2021. It described "trim the tree away from the house 6-8 feet and raise off roof by 8-10 ft. " Also, it said "... remove... sucker growth throughout the canopy. ........ Raise low drooping branches to allow 8-10' ground clearance." None of these phrases signaled to me what was actually done. So I signed it. When we returned, we were devastated to find our tree basically DESTROYED! They removed ALL BRANCHES from 6' off the ground to 25' up. Now we look out of our family room sliding glass door and see NO BRANCHES, only a tree TRUNK. We now get NO SHADE on our deck in the afternoon. When we called to dispute what they'd done, the estimator defended it, saying "You signed a contract!" She said I should have known that "removing sucker growth" meant removing all the branches which once filled our vision from the house. When I said we should at least get a rebate, she said "No- no rebates! I'm sorry you're upset... but I can't put the branches back." So we have to live with the ugliness Smitty's Tree Service has handed us.... And spend more money to hang a sun shade and plant another tree. I was very impressed from the moment their arborist reviewed a plan for my backyard until their employees came to my backyard and cut down a very difficult tree that was wrapped into high-voltage lines. The scheduled day was extremely hot and I didn't think they were gonna show due to the heat. But they did right on time and worked extremely hard through the heat to cut down and clear the tree out of my backyard. I was impressed with the techniques they used to keep the tree from hitting the powerline as well as a brand new pergola I had built in my backyard, they used my neighbors driveway with a remote control, boom. They even trimmed up my neighbor side of his yard where the branches were hanging low at no extra cost. Overall I would recommend this tree cutting service to anyone who needs a tree cut down in their backyard. They are license and insured and extremely professional about their jobs. read more

Placed a review on their Facebook page when this happened in 2013, and friends linked me here to post it, because the Smitty's Tree Service page was suddenly merged with Smitty's Arbor Service after my first review, and the original review then disappeared, so it was posted again. Stay away from Smitty's! They were in the neighborhood trimming trees for our townhome association, 3 weeks after they were supposed to, and they crushed all of my Dad's flowers around the base of the tree -- after I caught them (pics and video for backup) and asked them NOT to, because he just passed. The guy shook his head and kept doing it anyways. Completely disrespectful! See how you feel when someone ignorant does it to you after the person passed. Yes, they can be replaced, but you're destroying a memory and being offensive on top of it! Last I knew, trashing someone's gardening purposely and not taking steps to avoid it -- like NOT stepping directly on the plants or throwing giant branches straight down into the 18" radius of the beds around (easily could have thrown branches outward or put angled boards against the tree to direct them away) -- is called property damage. Instead of calling the police, as one would do if some punk did this NOT with a company, I called the number on the side of the Smitty's truck parked in front of our house to complain while it was happening and explaining the situation as to why -- in hopes Smitty's office would call the crew and tell them not to do it anymore. They put me on hold, then came back and said they'd get a hold of the owner and call back. Did they? No. Terrible service, completely insensitive crew, and beyond unprofessional to not even have the audacity to call back or offer an apology or a remedy. Unbelievable! Make sure you put down your own boarding or transplant your work (or as in our case, our recently deceased loved one's work!!) to save it before hiring Smitty's Tree Service! Smitty's returned our call and came out promptly to give us an estimate. We had overgrown shrubs with volunteer mulberry (WEED) trees sprouting up, ruining the bushes. A very efficient crew came out to remove all but the stumps. They cleaned up behind themselves and shredded as they went. We were pleased with the work so far. But, the stump removal (additional charge, of course) was supposed to be done in a week. We realize weather setbacks could have delayed this, but it was a full MONTH before the guys came with the stump grinder. And they came during a rainy morning, which eventually led to their stump grinder getting stuck in the mud. We helped get plywood under the wheels to get it out, but it left a pretty big gash in the area where it had been stuck. read more

Terrible service all around by Sandy and Bernadine. Prices are incredible high ($700 for 5 hostas and some rocks on 5ft square if that!) and they don't stand by their product. Tree removal ridiculously priced as well. Better off with John's Tree Service if you're in their service area. One of the hostas looked terrible when it was planted last year and Sandy told us to wait and if it didn't look better she'd replace it this year. Now it looks awful and guess what?? They won't replace it because it's past the "warranty." And we've used them for decades! I'm sure they'll respond to this review with some line about how they can't do it for everyone and the plant looked fine 3 months ago (it didn't) so not their problem now...where's the customer service in that? We've had Smitty's out a few times over the past few years, and each time has been great. The first time, we needed a huge Silver Maple assessed. They came out for an estimate and then trimmed and elevated the canopy within a few days. The next time, they took down two pines and an over-zealous trash plant. One of the trees was above a utility line and they took great care while stump-grinding. The tree in our yard would have required a cherry-picker, but they advised me that I could save some $$ if I took down a section of fence so they could move in different equipment. I did that, they completed the job, and I ended up saving a good deal of money. I will continue using Smitty's until we are outside of their range of service. read more

Contacted Smitty's for a quote on tree removal and trimming back of another tree that adjoining neighbor was complaining about. Owner responded with an on-site visit and quote within hours. Was very pleasant, accommodating, and professional. Not surprised because this company was top-notch according to all the inquiries I made about them before I called. Estimator provided complete details on what work needed to be done to complete the job to my expectations. Price quoted was most fair and reasonable of all the other tree service/arborists I had out for estimates. Smitty's mailed to my home copies of current license and current insurance policy on their workers and Company for over one million dollars to protect me and my neighbor's property. Four man/two truck crew showed up to do the work. crew leader identified self and members and provided identification as Smitty's employees. Showed up exactly on day and time as promised by office staff person. Proceeded to perform work required expeditiously and safely/professionally. Checked with me periodically to verify that work was proceeding as I had requested and to my complete satisfaction. I contacted several tree services regarding the many mulberry trees that had taken over my yard. People didn't get back to me, or they wanted me to meet with them during work hours for an estimate. Smitty's said "no problem" and sent someone over to advise on my entire corner lot (at my request). Chaz called me and went over the property explaining what 'weed trees' were and how the look of the property could be improved and opened up. He sent over a detailed map and estimate that clearly explained the work to be done and where (and what) trees would be removed. I explained that i was in a bit a hurry as fall was approaching and I had other work that was dependent on the tree removal. No one else could give me a commitment, but Smitty's obliged and got me on their work schedule in short order. It snowed right after and made it difficult to locate the stumps that needed to be ground down. The crew missed some and I called Smittty's to let them know. They sent a project manager over - Sandy, and he brought a crew with the original work order map to locate all the stumps and grind them down. Really pleasant company to deal with!
