My contractor had a one year contract with them for my apartment building in Chicago. They came one time to inspect the place and after that time they claimed that they arrived monthly, however my property manager never gave them any access, and never saw met technician after one time. After a few months of giving payment, my building was infastated with rodents and all my tenants compaint. They refused to give me credit for all the months that they charged me and never showed up and they confested that they didn't come inside the building, only outside, eventhough my contract was for interior and exterior. I have no evidance for exterior work either. This is a scam company, run away. read more

Updating my review as their service only worsened. - Stephanie Wilson, the coordinator, continued to be a massive jerk when I called (Insisting I didnt have bed bugs.. until I showed her pictures of the bugs) . She also mis-scheduled two further appointments. I called at the tail end of the window she gave me, only to find out that no one had even been scheduled. - I left a note with her boss, who never called me back. - Bugs were crawling on my bed 2 hours post the chemical treatment they did. Shamefule If you live in the Chicago area, I highly recommend calling "Pest Management Services" instead. They did a great job and the bugs are gone. And they were nice. Smithereen services my location on a monthly basis and they do a pretty good job making sure pest are under control. I do want to give a shout out to Greg (GLS). He is very professional and he takes pride in his work. We been having an issue with alley rats and mice getting into our garage area Greg was very thorough with inspecting and checking traps. he helped my building ops specialist locate where they were coming from and how to minimize the problem. We are so grateful for his suggestions and we appreciate his excellent customer service. Hope that he will service our location again. read more

We had a huge wasps nest on our roof that needed to be taken care of; after calling multiple pest control companies, Smithereen was able to schedule someone to come out within 48 hours. Mark, our tech, is one of the nicest, most responsive people we've ever worked with. Communicative, nice and super prompt. He came out for a second time (for free) to take care of the wasps that had hatched in the nest after the first treatment. We've seen no wasps since. The price was incredibly reasonable. We will absolutely use Smithereen (Mark in particular!) again. read more

I had bed bugs and it cost me $2400.00 and it took them a year to get of the bugs and it was 2 small bedrooms upstairs. I called for mice issue after getting basement windows put in . I expected the technician to go around not only the inside of house but outside to see where the mouse came in. The only thing we were given was sticky paper and poison which we already had. Needless to say 2 weeks later I still have a mouse that is avoiding the sticky paper and the poison!! PISSED! Worst service ever - the guy was supposed to come at a certain time was 20 minutes late.. Then, did everything around the house - he even did my closet and then now, there is all sticky stuff everywhere and LINES all over my closet and on top of that to make it worse I have to repaint my closet when I just had someone come out and paint our closet... Our clothes are even ruined as well!!! When I called to share everything - the guy RAY goes to us "I've known this guy for years he would never go into someone's closet or do this or do that" I am sorry, but you shouldn't be doing that and he kept saying it over and over and over again... I WAS SO MAD! He goes oh will take a look into this and so forth.. Never heard back! Had enough - called back yesterday no help! Called back to day - finally someone helped and I am getting my whole refund back!!! I will never use again!!!!!!!! We called Smithereen to handle a nest of yellowjackets (we initially thought it was wasps, but they identified them as YJs) that had developed in the siding of one of our first story windows. We had tried to get rid of them ourselves via OTC insecticides but after several sprays determined we needed professional exterminators. I can't speak to how Smithereen responds to other pests, but as far as this case went I would say "professional" is an inaccurate assessment of their services. We ended up scheduling three visits in total. For the first, the technician came armed with nothing more than his own spray can of insecticide - from all appearances (and, as I soon observed, results) no different than the $5 can I'd purchased from Home Depot and used myself. I don't want to lay this lack of preparation on the tech's shoulders, however. The poor guy didn't even have a ladder to reach the window siding in question; he ended up needing to borrow mine! I don't know how Smithereen determines how or what equipment to send out with their techs, but when the pest itself is capable of FLIGHT and tends to NOT nest at ground level, I would imagine a ladder should be the bare minimum. Regardless, I was lucky enough to have my own that was JUST tall enough to get the tech where he needed to go. He then proceeded to spray the hole. And... that was it. Granted, he was able to soak it from angles I hadn't been able to reach myself (me bracing the ladder for him might have helped), but in the end that was all he did, or could do given the equipment he had. He told me to wait until the following day and use some caulk to fill in the hole, as by then all the yellowjackets should be dead and gone. I blindly trusted that the insecticide he used, which LOOKED very similar to the one I had used, was, presumably, of a more "professional" strength. The yellowjackets were back by the following morning, so that hope was quickly dashed. We scheduled a follow up, and the tech returned with insecticide and, again, no ladder. This time he offered to caulk the hole himself immediately after spraying, which I appreciated as I'd paid a lot for someone to come and do what I'd already basically done. He sprayed the hole again, filled it with caulk, and went on his way. Alas, within an hour or two it was clear the caulk had seeped down the hole and left it open, and since the insecticide did nothing the YJs returned within a few hours. I scheduled one more look (which the customer service rep claimed was "beyond the scope of their guarantee"; despite it being listed as 30 days he said that they only typically do "two visits" before they charge you again; I pushed back and he relented, but still...). This time I got a new tech who, again, had no ladder, but claimed he had a "much stronger insecticide" than the previous tech that could "kill on contact" (why that hadn't been employed in the first place I don't know). But this guy was far more apprehensive on the ladder and didn't feel comfortable doing the caulk, so he simply sprayed from where he was comfortable and told me I should do the caulking once the insecticide had dried in a couple of hours. I just went to do so before writing this review, and... the yellowjackets are alive and well and presumably redecorating. Needless to say, I'll be looking elsewhere for help with any stinging, flying pest issues in the future. I hope Smithereen learns how to better equip their techs for problems like ours, or at the very least comes clean with future customers if wasps, bees, yellowjackets and the like just aren't in their wheelhouse. read more

I had a terrible rat infestation in a half crawl space half unfinished basement. Two dozen rats I had estimated. First visit by a rep and he balked about not being aware of the specifics of the location. 2nd visit was by a manager named Dean. Two follow-up visits were performed. In total 31 rats were either caught or died from poison. I expected I was gonna get hustled. Not at all. The honesty and professionalism displayed by Dean has made them my go to company if I ever have the need in the future. I highly recommend them. read more

I had this service for the past 3 weeks. My co-op called them for bed bugs. I haven't seen bugs, so I assume my apartment is cleared. I can't compare to other services. The exterminator wasn't very communicative, but I guess he did his job. Stay away from this company! My first mistake was to continue doing service with this company when they accidentally made an appointment on a holiday, but where closed. They called me back and stated I need to reschedule. In the process off rescheduling, the rep said I should had never made an appointment on a holiday and I told her the person I spoke too last time made it for me. I didn't know it was a holiday. She kept asking me who made it and I told her I didn't recall her name. I should had hang up, but I was in need of an exterminator! After coming to my house and doing a horrible service, which I paid for, they kept on sending me a bill for the past 3 months. I called twice and each time the rep said I have paid for the services and she does not know why I am getting a bill. They serviced my home for squirrels twice in the last couple of months and they over charged me . They never sent me a bill they just took the money out of my account . I hate companies that brag about commitment to customer service and don't follow through! I called Smithereen's 800# to request an appt. The person said she didn't handle scheduling (nor could she give prices over phone) but would have someone call me right back. Over 24hrs later, I still hadn't heard anything so called again. This time the person had to transfer me to their headquarters for Chicago scheduling -- why do these people have an 800#? After a lengthy hold, I spoke to another person who said the scheduler was out of office and would call me back. Really?! They don't have a scheduling system they can look at online? We have a summer house here and have dealt with them enough to understand that they're about as mediocre as they come when it comes to solving anything. The management team is basically a bunch of clowns who know LESS than the technicians do about solving ANYTHING at ANY point in time. We have been stood up multiple times on multiple occasions for appointments. Had technicians leave pesticides in our home. Track mud inside... etc etc. I let that go since we had a couple really great guys servicing our home that really did an amazing job prior to this. They had some really great technicians, but they all seem to leave. From what I can tell the management scares them all off or they must pay poorly. It just irritating finding out overtime that we have someone good that they were quit AGAIN. I don't want Russian roulette service... Im giving my business elsewhere. read more

I lived in an apartment complex temporarily called the Sovereign. They have a contract with this place and were scheduled to get rid of bed bugs in my tiny studio. I had a large sum of cash hidden in my apartment, stupidly, because the front desk wasn't clear about how soon the pest exterminators would be coming by. Once they started exterminating, however, I knew I wouldn't be let in. I was a bit worried about it, but I thought since they had a contract with this place they wouldn't risk robbing from their customers. However, when I came back to inspect the place, the money was GONE. Not only that, but I found another bed bug upon walking in. atrocious! I couldn't have had a worse experience and the people working here ARE WILLING TO ROB YOU OF YOUR POSSESSIONS, not to mention they will do an awful job. Unbelievable. We hired Smithereens for one month (they tried to talk us into signing up for a year but we declined) to help us fight rats in our basement. This monthly fee was over $300 and was supposed to include unlimited visits and support. However, someone came over twice and all they did was lay traps (which we could have done ourselves!)--and we had to request the keys to the traps so that we could empty them. The person who came over also pointed out some holes in our basement where rats could get in, but that is all. We paid over $300 for two ten minute visits, three manual cage traps, and a few glue traps. We really do not recommend them; their phone service/coordination was really poor and the fact that we paid so much for so little is just absurd. read more

After explaining all of the services throughout the year we were very interested, just had a couple questions. Found out we had some bed bugs and my condo building had Smithereen out next day. First visit was just an inspection which I found odd because everyone I've talked to gets their home prepped so they can treat the issue ASAP. The guy found one bug and wouldn't be back until MONDAY to treat...absurd. He also told me to only pack up everything in our bedroom which we did. Monday comes a new guy shows up to treat. He takes one look at the closets in our living room and entry way and tells me he won't treat because those should have been cleaned out. This is infuriating because a) we were never told to do that or we would have and b) it would be another 3 days before someone could com back. Are you serious?! The original guy that came to do the initial check up was back on Thursday to treat. He told me that the other guy was wrong and we didn't need to clean out those outer closets so basically we tore our apartment up for no reason at all. Do you guys not communicate over there?! I was pretty pissed but at that point I was just glad the issue was FINALLY being dealt with. Well, now it's Sunday and we found a bug crawling across the bed. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Words can't do justice to the rage I am feeling right now. We will be going on week 3 of this issue and I am absolutely furious with how this company has handled our situation. I have been living at a Krenger property in Chicago for just over a year. Krenger sends an exterminator monthly to deter any pests setting up residence. Dean Martinez is who Smithereen sends and we couldn't be happier with him. He's pleasant and takes any problems we mention seriously. And makes them go away. By problems I mean bugs. But it is more than that. I might not be able to verify this, but when Dean walks down the street cockroaches, spiders, and all sorts of creatures literally run away in fear. Unless they are cute creatures. Once I was attacked by a crazed raccoon with rabies by our dumpsters, and Dean may or may not have punched it in the face and saved my life. Again I don't really have evidence, so just take my word he great at his job. read more

Dean from Smithereen comes by my apartment once a month to check up on our pest control needs and he's always a pleasure to interact with. Very friendly and helpful. When we first moved into the apartment we were freaked out to discover a roach, but Dean put something down for us and we haven't had an issue since. And he was very gracious about our cat situation -- at the time we had to keep the cats quarantined from one another in separate rooms and he was careful not to let them slip through the door behind him as he passed through.
