Food was good. Service was meh. Ambiance was lacking. Overall, I was disappointed. We wanted to celebrate a birthday expecting an indoor dining experience, but when we got there it was outdoor dining only. No mention of this when I made the reservation. We sat at a weathered metal mesh table on metal mesh folding chairs like you'd fine spent too many years in the sun on someone's patio. It was like they didn't want to have to clean up the interior of the restaurant so they just had everyone sit outside. Fortunately it was starting to cool from the 90° high so it wasn't miserable, but we were dressed for indoor dining, not shorts and casual wear. The server mentioned a special treat for the birthday person. At the end of the meal, they brought the birthday dessert along with the other we ordered, but the server (not our waitress) looked very confused and said, "Oh, you didn't see that", and the guy literally took the dessert with the candle back and never returned. I thought maybe he'd forgotten to light the candle, but we never saw it again and were left to split the other dessert. Just a weird experience. I was terribly disappointed we didn't have the birthday celebration we'd hoped for. I won't go back, but that doesn't fix the missed experience we had hoped for to celebrate. read more

celebrated a birthday at smith flat house and was an awesome place to celebrate a special event! we started with the wild mushroom bordelaise.. our mouths ate it first, sorry yelp! it was recommended by our server which i would HIGHLY recommend. the crunch of the bread paired so perfectly with the mushrooms. i could BATHE in that sauce. risotto was the popular choice of the evening. if you order the risotto lombardy, do yourself a favor and add the beef tenderloin medallions. the tenderloins are cooked to perfection, and add an extra layer of deliciousness to the dish. the butternut squash risotto is a great option for vegetarians. the pork chop had tons of flavor and the potatoes and broccolini complimented the main course in all the right ways *insert heart eyes emoji*. we brought our own wine and ordered a cocktail and it didn't disappoint. we also sat in the cellar, which was an awesome place to sit! our server and the other staff were extremely kind and enhanced our dining experience. tons of parking and outdoor seating. overall a wonderful place to dine or celebrate a special event! read more

Beautiful atmosphere, great service, and solid food. I've been twice and has great experiences. First time I had the lamb shank, which was huge. Meat was tender with a rich sauce. Second time I had the frutti di mare, which came with mussels, snow crab, and shrimp over linguini in a decadent red sauce. My husband had the seafood risotto which had the same types of seafood and smoky sausage and corn studded in the rice. Great service every time. The restaurant is in the basement and you feel like you're in the mid 1800s with the rustic wood beams and old stone walls. Good local wine list. Our server was polite and friendly. The service was prompt. The massive amounts of soft-serve style mashed potatoes fed us for 3 days afterward -- no joke. The meat was excellent. BUT -- if Smith Flat House wants to market their place as a "high end" top-of-the-line establishment we'd suggest that they'd do better maintenance around the tables in the basement and clean up the cobwebs, extension cords and random corks on the floor. We went there to celebrate a family event. We have lived in the area for 28 years and had never been there to eat, despite many friends giving it a good endorsement. We were not disappointed. Had a reservation for the cellar for dinner last weekend and almost canceled it because we were still so full from lunch. So happy we decided to be gluttonous because the meal we had at Smith Flat House was incredible! All three of us ordered the black and white so it's the only menu item I can review but it was so so delicious. The filet was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy. The garlic mashed potatoes were fluffy and full of flavor, and the prawns and sauce were great as well. I wasn't going to order wine because I was a little underwhelmed by the local vineyards on the trip but so glad I had a glass of the cabernet sauvingnon because it was so good! When we arrived to Smith Flat House on time for our reservation, we were told that we would have to wait approximately 20 minutes for our table. This is the second time that this has happened to us at this restaurant. We certainly wont be recommending this restaurant to our friends any longer. After our meager breakfast at the RB&B we stayed at, we were starving. Stopped by here for a Sunday brunch and we're thrilled that we did. What an interesting place. Supposedly men had mined for gold and crystals underneath the place back in the mid-1860s. It was like being transported back in time. I ordered the Sicilian omelette and my wife had the Romano omelette. It did take a bit of time to arrive, but let's face it, restaurants are seriously understaffed everywhere so, please be patient. They are sincerely trying their best. I've eaten at dozens of breakfast places over the years, but I have to admit, the omelette they served was the hottest I've ever had. Ordered food and it took until 12:30-12:45 for all the food to come out for our table. They were out of all ham and Canadian bacon as well as no cocktails so just mimosas as an option. Eggs Benedict: eggs overcooked Biscuits and gravy: biscuits weren't even cooked Waffles: asked for no whipped cream for child and covered in it so my child wouldn't eat it Coffee: cold- lukewarm If a server came over, they didn't ask how we were doing or if we needed anything. You had to forcefully ask for sometimes attention. It was just terrible. We wanted to support locally but this was 1000% a complete disaster. People were waiting outside to be seated and I wanted to tell them to go somewhere else. The waiter, Emerick was truly a professional, reminding me of European waitstaff. (Something we're sorely lacking in Murphys.) Extremely knowledgeable,and eager to please me. The salad was bright and crisp, with amazing pickled onions. I wanted the filet dinner, but with a petite size of steak--which I was able to substitute--melted in my mouth. And the demi-glaze...OMG. We hit up Smith Flat House while in Apple Hill this past weekend. This was our second trip here after first finding the place last November and couldn't say enough great things about the place. Unfortunately, it wasn't as great as the first time but still enjoyable. We sat in the cellar which had a really cool vibe, especially with the trio playing live music! The server was very nice and accommodating, offering a sampling of a wine before we decided to purchase the bottle. We had some questions and modifications which I understand can be annoying for some. She took them in stride and did a nice job with them. Now the food... we started off with the Wild Mushroom Bordelaise. This was by far our favorite part of the meal. The dish was so full of flavor, very deep, rich marsala flavors with grilled bread to soak up the goodness. We also had a house salad which was very nice. My wife had the Butternut Squash Risotto for dinner. She has a serious aversion to sage so we asked our server how it was prepared and if it was possible to omit the sage emulsion. She replied that the sage emulsion was just drizzled on top and that omitting it wouldn't be a problem so that's what she ordered. The dish came out with a ring of what appeared to be cream around the edge... and no sage so that was good. We couldn't tell for sure what the liquid was for sure, it just appeared to be liquid that wasn't completed incorporated into the risotto. Could have been by design? The dish was also missing the candied pecans which would have complimented the dish. For me, I ordered the Black & White, their version of a surf and turf. The menu states that it comes with slow-roasted baby heirloom carrots but the photo of the dish on the menu (on their website) shows it with asparagus instead. I asked our server to confirm the vegetable because I don't like carrots. She said that it is for sure carrots and offered to swap with something else (they did not have asparagus). I opted for brussel sprouts since I saw it was on the menu with another item. The dish came out and at first glace, was happy and amazed at the mountain of mashed potatoes. I went straight for the shrimp with the béarnaise sauce. Very flavorful sauce, nicely done. The steak however was overcooked and was missing the demi-glace. Not a deal breaker, I'm alright eating a well done steak even though it's not my favorite. The potatoes were disappointing though. They are advertised as roasted garlic mashed potatoes but I didn't get any garlic at all. In fact, they were dry, lumpy, and rather flavorless. Despite the few hiccups, we had an overall good experience witll definitely be back on our next trip to Apple Hill. read more
