The Valentine's Day experience was awful. Without even getting into the food and drink, which was marginally edible at best, the ambiance was that of a backyard wedding reception put together at the last minute. We were seated at rickety folding chairs that felt like they would collapse at any minute. The round table was so small it could barely hold our plates. Silverware fell off them more than once. The tables were also plastic I think - a table next to us was so wobbly the wait staff was trying to shove napkins under it to stabilize it before finally moving the couple. Ok, the food. The spinach and artichoke dip was less a dip and more a casserole. There was one tiny piece of lobster in the bisque. The medium filet was well done and the medium rare was medium. The carrots that came with the filet were not much more cooked than the raw carrots that came with the not-a-dip dip. Thank heavens I didn't make this reservation as I'm pretty sure I would have spent the night on the couch after for having forgotten it was Valentine's Day. read more

The food was quite good, 4.5 stars. The service was OK, 2.5 stars. Ambiance is a tough one, but I'd say 3 stars. Value for food I'd rate it 3 stars. Overall I'd rate Smith Flat at 3.25 stars. Food came promptly but no one ever checked on us after that. I finally had to wave another waitress down to get my water refilled. Our server definitely needs to work on that. At least make eye contact with guests to see if we're staring in hopes of getting her attention. She was very kind and sweet besides this. The ambiance was strange for a couple of reasons. First, it was very cold in the cellar where dinner is served. We had an oil heater between us and still couldn't comfortably remove our coats. That was just weird, especially for a place billing itself an upscale establishment of this caliber. Second, our table was like a wine barrel with a table top... that wobbled pretty bad. Everytime my father cut his steak, I'm chasing my plate around. I'm sorry, but.. really guys?? :/ These seem like relatively easy things to fix, so I hope they address them. My wife and I went there for our anniversary, and we loved the atmosphere. It is in an odd spot, but I think that is the point. We were seated on the basement floor way in the back, and it was perfect. You walk by open mine shafts that are blocked off and it is super cool. The wait staff were excellent the only disappointing part of the experience was they were out on the first two things I wanted. This was bad because I was looking forward to them but on the other hand it got me out of my comfort zone, and I tried something new. Mains of shrimp jambalaya risotto was good, lobster and shrimp were cooked well as was the risotto just too corn forward for my taste. WHEN: Saturday @2:30pm It's Mother's Day weekend so the afternoon reservation for a party of 12 was possible. It's was for my grandmother's 80th birthday, and I'm so glad they have a huge outdoor seating area to accommodate large parties. It's quite lovely with plenty of covering. Loraine took great care of us and check up on us well enough. However it was kind of brushed off when I asked for the kids menu (we had 2 little ones and an 11-year old). I know it exists from the website, but it was brushed off with a response of how there isn't really one, its just pizza or pasta, etc.). I didn't want to be a bother since its a huge party she was taking care of so I just told her we'll just have them share our food. I ended up needing to order a side of fruit. Here's my quick TLDR summary: PROs: + Good Service + Lots of seatings, especially in the back patio + Huge open area for large parties, and events with decent decor. + Good amount of parking spots + Free dessert with yelp check-in! CONs: - Food, quality was not good even though the portions are huge. - Lots of broken chairs (outdoor and high chairs) - Not family friendly (see at the end). Here's what I had: SPINACH & ARTICHOKE DIP - $14 I tasted mostly bell bell peppers which made it more of a sweet dip. I don't care for the crackers ad the crudités were cut too big/thick. CAESAR SALAD - $10 This looked and tasted like something out of a store-bought kit. Felt like more of a filler. The best part were the croutons which were wonderfully crunchy and butter. BLUE CHEESE MUSHROOM BURGER - $18 Everything about this burger tasted over-cooked. I think I should have asked for more house-spread because it was dry. Fries were okay, and there were so many of it. MARGHERITA PIZZA - $16 (Small) +$2 for sausage. This looked way better than it tasted. It also came on a regular plate which was smaller than the pizza so it was quite awkward. Something sour/bland about this pizza I can't quite explain. ASPARAGUS SOUP - $9 This was good!!!! As yess...creamy and delightful! The only thing that was finished. CRÈME BRÛLÉE - $9 The kind you'd except so it was good, though I only had a small bite since this was my grandma's birthday treat (also free with yelp check in). But I'd like to think without the check in the birthday treat would be free. CHOCOLATE MOUSSE CAKE - $9 This gorgeous gradient mousse cake had a gritty taste to it, which is the last thing you'd expect when eating mousse. It's like there are tiny bits of shredded coconut in it. The Oreo cookie crust was super hard so I didn't care for that. DEEP FRIED BREAD PUDDING - $9 I enjoyed this because of the crispy layer it had from being deep fried. Maybe the mousse should have been deep fried too! 2 people tasted apples so maybe there was some, but for me it was mostly bread and cinnamon. It had enough gooey center to its crispy outer shell. I really enjoyed it, and it was nice that some chocolate sauce was included at the bottom. I'm honestly just really turned off about the many un-safe moments that took place--and I'm not talking about how no one wore masks (which I can't talk about this there's no longer a mandate for that). Anyway, we have 2 babies in our party so we needed 2 high chairs. However, but straps were broken and we were told that's all there was. So we ended up having to hold one in our laps and make sure the other one doesn't fal out (since he's a bit older). I asked if there were crayons or anything for the kids, but we were told they will get it but never did. It's fine, there wasn't enough table space anyway. The biggest thing I was turned off was when suddenly, our 11-year old fell while sitting. Turns out the chair was broken! This caused his finger to be pinched and I also he wasn't being super brave, and tried not to make a scene, it was quite painful. The only response we got from the staff was getting ice. That's it. So my impression here is that this place is not kid/family friendly. I honestly think the broken chair and high chair situation could have been handled better. I noticed there was no 18% gratuity fee applied, but regardless of everything, we still tipped 20%. It wasn't all bad. I really want to like it here. Prices were decent though the lunch menu felt really limited (mostly burgers and sandwiches). I see the intentions but unfortunately our experience here wasn't great and it truly felt like a 2-star rating. I hoping the food would at least be decent to enjoy. read more

Took a party of 5 to celebrate a birthday. Overall the food was great BUT the service was terrible. On the reservation we put this was a birthday celebration and our waitress even asked us if we are here for a special occasion. After that they did not make any effort to acknowledge the birthday person or party. Drinks went as dry as the servers behavior. They will be hard pressed to earn my business again. They are the best fine dining within El Dorado County, and I would highly recommend them for in person dining- to catering of offsite events. The set up for both the Glass House and the wedding were immaculate and staff beyond professional and friendly. 9 years later, we still eat here and I think that says a lot. Sitting outside is so lovely. The hostess, Maddie (sp?) was amazing and should be managing the place! If I could give 10 stars, I would. It's so fun to dine in such a historical building from 1800's. We sat in the back in the cellar and loved it! Drinks were delicious, and we loved the sun dried tomato butter with the bread (you get a free refill of bread) Our server, Brittany, was so fun and sweet the whole time. Food was absolutely delicious. Steaks were cooked perfectly and so tender, the linguine has tasty pesto sauce, and the jambalaya was just spicy enough. We had our wedding dinner here in the upstairs hall and were very pleased with how everything turned out. I had contacted the event team and Maria responded to me in a timely manner to set up an appointment to go over some things and to see the upstairs hall. Once we had made our decision to move forward, we pretty much planned everything through email. We went with all the basic decor that was included and we chose the buffet style catering with the salmon, chicken piccata, garlic mashed potatoes, and veggies. I didn't get any photos, but the food was delicious. We didn't have a wedding cake but added on the dessert assortment (cookies brownies and cheesecake bites) which were all tasty from what I tasted. I didn't get to try any but I was told the cookies were nice and warm and delicious! Everything looked beautiful and it was nice and cool upstairs for our guests which was a concern of ours because it was very hot that day. I liked how private the upstairs hall was and were able to hook a phone up to a speaker they had so we could play our wedding playlist. We ordered 3 Different pizzas a burger wrap (gf) a waffle for the 2 year old. There was a pretty long wait for food, but we were able to walk around outside with said 2 year old. We got our waffle, burger and one pizza. Then, another pizza which, for us, was not cooked enough. The cheese wasn't melted. After about 8 minutes? The third pizza arrived. We enjoyed the nectarina, and the Polynesian but the Margherita with pepperoni needed more cooking. The blue burger wrap was very tasty and the authentic thai soup was very tasty and spicy. Valentine's Day dinner was arguably the biggest rip off of a dining experience I've ever encountered. Shoving people into their event room in lines of tiny cheap tables with folding chairs and serving a mass produced terrible meal and charging $190 per couple was insulting. I should have trusted my gut and left when I arrived and got seated. We were greeted with a surprise of the special holiday menu - the restaurant website made no mention of the fact that they weren't serving off the normal menu. The room was lit up like a conference room and the chairs felt like they would collapse. The appetizer was inedible and mostly made of salt. The lobster bisque had maybe a hint of lobster at best. The filet mignon was a hockey puck. The carrots that accompanied it weren't cooked enough. I will never darken the doorway of this place again and I hope this review discourages anyone else giving this place their business. Ate at Smith Flat House last night for the first time since before Covid. We sat out on the patio with friends and enjoyed the live music on a Thursday night. It was perfect weather, great music, the service was good, and the food was tasty! We got the arancini balls for an appetizer and they were delicious! Some of the items on the menu seemed way out of season so we didn't order them, but I'm looking forward to going back later this summer to get the nectarine pizza when nectarines are in season. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun without being too rowdy. The service is very good here, even on busy nights they'll be giving you plenty of attention! I like the portion sizes here because they aren't too big, however I am a small person who doesn't eat very much, so I can see how some might think the portions are too small, especially considering the price. My only complaint about the food is that it is too salty. I have had garlic risotto, jambalaya risotto, tostadas, and the filet mignon with prawns. The two risottos were so salty that I couldn't finish, the garlic in particular was so overpowering I could only eat half of the plate, which wasn't enough food for me. The filet was cooked perfectly and was very tender. The prawns were delicious. The food is still very good, you will just need extra water. If you are in this area I highly recommend having dinner here. The food was amazing and it's in a really cool historic building. The night we were there they had live music which was very enjoyable. Our server was very attentive and patient. Appetizers: Arancini with marinara- the arancini were huge and crisp on the outside and filled with melted mozzarella. The sauce was flavorful and not overpowering. Bruschetta: The bruschetta was so refreshing. The tomatoes were perfectly ripe and the bread was delicious. Caesar salad- was a little bland and could've used more garlic and anchovies but wasn't a bottled creamy mess either. Entrees: Lamb Shank- cooked perfectly with mashed potatoes and a medley of mushrooms including king oyster which was a perfect compliment to the lamb Cioppino- so delicious! Filled with tons of great seafood! The broth was very thick and more like a pasta sauce so not traditionally broth like but still would order again Jambalaya risotto- omg this was over the top. Andouille sausage, lobster, shrimp, corn and the perfect amount of spice. I wouldn't change a thing about this dish. Pasta carbonara-super creamy with bacon and corn. Yummy!! Dessert: banana bread pudding was crispy on the outside and super moist on the inside. Could've used some ice cream on the side. I went to Smith Flat House with a large group. Everyone absolutely loved their food except me. I'm a vegan and I knew this wasn't a good place to be a vegan so my expectations were low. I asked if chef could make me a marinara pasta or vegetable pasta. They said yes. When they served it to me it was zucchini in marina only. No pasta. It would have been nice if they would have mentioned to me that they couldn't do pasta or the pasta noodles weren't vegan or something. $30 for just zucchini was a bummer. read more

Our reservations where for 7 and we arrived on time, entering the building we where meet by some teenagers chasing a large dog through the restaurant , and a rude lady that said to us" your not eating inside tonight" outside in the entry was a small sign that stated "Join us in the patio" after not finding anyone that seemed to work at the restaurant we walked out to the patio. There was 20 or so people outside dressed in shorts t shirts and flip flops ,needless my wife felt a bit overdressed. ( clearly not fine dining ) the girl that seemed overwhelmed said " yes your in the right spot, we have a birthday party inside so you will have to eat outside" on some old hard metal patio furniture, and we will keep coming by to adjust the umbrella to try to keep the sun out of your eyes. I should stop right here but I'll keep going. on the patio was a older woman and man with a couple of guitars trying to entertain us with some not so appropriate music for a romantic venue, and more barking dogs . there where kids playing KORN HOLE and running around screaming. Did I mention this was supposed to be the most romantic venue around? A young kid made it to our table to take our orders ( clearly not a experienced waiter) certainly not one with fine dining experience. at the end of the evening our dinner came to $280 with tip ( 1 cocktail ) and dessert with no birthday candle ! Mistakingly I read the reviews after going here and my review seems to be right in line with several others and what I noticed is there is no comments back from the establishment , I guess they are ok with it.
