We hired Smiling Bee to come out and remove a bee hive (that had been there for 2+ years) from our chimney. Needless to say, it was a big job and could have turned into a huge mess, but Smiling Bee performed the removal with expertise and the job was done neatly. AND, they take the bees to their farm. They're not exterminators. The one downfall was the price. It was considerably higher than our original estimate. Our job was challenging because it was in the chimney and it was hard to determine how large the hive was until they actually could get inside. However, I did check references and they all came back positive. In having to work with a multitude of different contractors (recent house remodel), it's refreshing to come across a person who seems to take pride in his work and does a job well. I'm somewhat of a perfectionist (AKA neat freak), so Smiling Bee won my endorsement, partly because they cleaned up after themselves and left the job site in great condition! read more

So Braulio aka Bryan, the beekeeper who owns Smiling Bee and an almond orchard in San Jose, came out on Tuesday, April 22, and inspected my chimney. Outside we saw no bees swarms or bees entering and exiting the chimney. Braulio's expert (over 20 years experience) conclusion is that there is no beehive in my chimney. The bees in my house, indeed, did come down the chimney and they were only scouts. Braulio suggested that I have him put in a chimney cap and that I shake the flue and vacuum the spiders, etc. As he missed coming on Wednesday (I didn't have a beehive) he rescheduled the cap installation on Thursday morning. It took less than an hour for the installation. Several years ago Smiling Bee removed a beehive from my garage wall. I was so pleased with Smiling Bee's service that I called again for this supposed beehive removal. I am so happy that Braulio does live bee removal and relocation; this is one of the reasons I chose Smiling Bee. I recommend Smiling Bee for bee inspection and beehive removal. If anyone needs beehive, wasp or yellow jacket nest removal, I recommend Brian/Smiling Bee! I had yellow jackets swarming around my front door. I tried the usual traps and sprayed, but no luck. Called the Smiling Bee and Brian came out the same day. He quickly determined the nest was inside my house, between the outer exterior panel of my house and the living room wall. The yellow jackets had found a small gap (construction issue) and made their way inside. Brian was able to remove the nest with minimal time and damage to my home, and at a fairly reasonable price. I called Smiling Bee around 2:30 PM in the afternoon to discuss the problems I was having with a yellow jacket nest in the ground in front of my house. I had been stung twice in the last 2 days so was anxious to get rid of them. Smiling Bee was able to come over to my house by 7 PM, assess the situation, and provide a very reasonable quote. Ironically, while talking to them I actually got stung again even though we were at least 30 ft from the nest. By 8:30 PM they had removed the nest and gotten rid of the yellow jackets. After my letter carrier and two plumbers were stung, I knew I had to do something about whatever was buzzing around the sidewalk leading to the front door. I checked online and it sounded like they were yellow jackets (a kind of aggressive wasp that can sting repeatedly). They were in a ground hole with about a 3-or 4-inch opening in a flower bed that is alongside the sidewalk. I was afraid to try and get rid of them myself. Besides which, I couldn't decide which DIY method to try. In doing a pest control search, I found Smiling Bee in San Jose. I called (cell: 408/640-7405) and spoke to Braulio Medina about 9:45 a.m. He had to call me back, but about an hour later, he was at my house with his assistant. (Braulio also goes by the name Brian.) After we agreed on a price, his assistant and he suited up. They dug up the hive in the ground and removed it. It was filled with eggs. They filled the hole with dirt and ran some water to settle the dirt. The yellow jackets outside the now-filled hole buzzed around the rest of the afternoon. Braulio said it might take a day or two for them to completely disperse. His assistant also knocked down a few empty little wasps nests that were under the roof overhang. Braulio said to call him if anything more needed to be done, and he'd come back for no additional charge. WOW!!! We had a bee infestation in our eves in our backyard making it very hard for us to sit outdoors. I called 3 bee removal companies based on Yelp recommendations. The first company said it would cost approx. $375 for hive removal and then another $400 to fix the wood beam that they will be removing. The second guy said it would be $275 approx. since most of his jobs are around there based on my description however there would be add on costs. I then called Smiling Bee. The communication was not great but I liked that the owner could come out on the same day (sunday) and seemed earnest. He said he would not quote anything on the phone and went on to say most folks give you quotes and then tack on when they are on the job. He also said he would come out and get the entire job done. I liked the owner instantly. He spent an hour trying to find a way to fix the problem from the attic but there was not indication of the any issue in the attic and also no access from the Attic. He then removed the wood from the eves and went on the remove a Massive hive! Gives me the hibie jibbies just thinking of it. He sprayed the area and re-fixed the wood. Braulio is awesome! I heard a buzzing above the ceiling of my room. The attic is situated there and I was concerned that it was another attack of the yellow jackets. I called Braulio and he said he could come the next day to check out the problem. The next day came and he went up in to the attic to assess the situation. I thought he would come back down to tell me what was going on but he had a plastic bag with small and newly made nests of what he identified was "orchard bees". I was relieved and a little concerned by the nests being so close to me. But he assured me everything was safe. Fine, just get those things outside I said with a nervous laugh. Upon examining the outside perimeter, he saw there were wasp nests under where the roof overhangs with the side of the house. He said he could remove those as well since there were many of them. He got his ladders, his wasp killing spray, and got to it with his metal spatula. All in all, it took him an hour to finish up and he was reasonable with his price. He did mention that this would be a maintenance issue since the wasps will rebuild their nests in such a comfortable area. He gave me a solution to solve that. It is out of my price range for now. I found 2 wasp nests under my roof, one of which was on the 2nd floor and hard to access so I decided to get an exterminator to come in and help. Called around the area and I was getting quotes like $400 for both nest removal, then I found Braulio and called him. I have been seeing a couple dead bees near my fireplace for a few days. Today I came home and found more than usual. At first I thought it was because I left my door open because my fireplace was closed off. I went out to my back patio to discover more dead bees and up on the roof I see a good swarm. Naturally I am on edge because I have a family who has never been stung so I was worried about anyone being allergic. I called Smiling Bee at 4pm (almost after hours for most companies) and they were out here within two hours. (with traffic in this area that's great) There was no hive yet but a good swarm and my fireplace was not bee proof. (So there was a good chance if I left untreated a hive would have been built). They were able to bee proof my fireplace and spray some repellent. Some things to note: - This is a family business and well experienced, they provide great customer service - They do a excellent job at explaining everything and make sure you are informed before starting the work - They preserve the bee's - Competitive rates - They back up their work (was advised if the bees were still swarming after a few days to give them a call - hopefully nothing will happen but I could tell they wanted me to know they stand behind their quality of work and it was important that I was happy) Overall just a great experience. Over the past few days I had noticed some wasps appearing in my front and back yard so I called him and made an appointment for a free consultation and he came over the next day. He knew exactly where to look and immediately found two small nests in our shed and one hanging off our fence. Braulio from Smiling Bee was the first one I called when I discovered bees inside the soffit. He was confident that he could get the swarm from the outside. I was doubtful and called someone else to provide a quote for going through the drywall, inside. The quote came back at the same price EXCLUDING repairs to the drywall. Drywall repairs would have probably doubled the total cost. After a bit of hemming and hawing, I decided to go with Smiling Bee. Braulio's predictions were right on the money about the ease of opening up the soffit, and the size and location of the colony. He removed the honeycombs, vacuumed up the bees, replaced the soffit, sealed it with silicone and repainted it! I have to say that Braulio was a pleasure to deal with. I've got bees. With the honey bee population down 80% due to a nasty fungus, mites, and who know what the hell it going on with the climate, I hate to do anything to honey bees (as in killing them) especially when they decide to frickin' plant their hive IN MY KITCHEN WALL!!!! I called 2 exterminator companies and said they will come out and kill them. I've read and heard from 3 bee experts that it is illegal to kill honey bees and given the state their population is in currently, it would absolutely be criminal to harm them. None the less, I want them OUT. I called one bee guy who assured me he'd be out but was a no show. This company, Smiling Bee owned and operated by Braulio Medina, not only came out the day he said he would, he has been very helpful in explaining what he is doing and why every step of the way. He owns an almond orchard and he captures the bees and takes it back to his orchard. I highly recommend Mr. Medina's company not only for the future of honey bees and the agricultural businesses who depend on bees, quite simply he knows what he is doing and shows up to do the job.
