Alum Rock Self Storage was great before they were bought out by SmartStop Storage. Read the WHOLE…read morestory. And don't rent a unit from here. EVER. If I could give a minus zero star, I would. This company bought Alum Rock Storage in December of 2024, but never sent out notices of the buyout, or bills to everyone with a storage unit. My wife was wondering why the bill didn't come for January, and called and emailed Alum Rock Storage. No one responded. She also went down to the office to see if she could talk to someone working there, but the office was under construction and no one was there. So in April, she gets a bill from SmartStop Storage, saying she owes money for the last 4 month's. No introduction. No apology. Just a HUGE bill for 4 months. So she calls and disputes the charges, saying she was never notified of the change of ownership, and she had tried to send a check for January, but it was sent back by the post office. After tons of going back and forth with SmartStop, she finally pays the bill and she thought everything was find. But no. She gets a bill for a late payment for May, even though she paid everything over the phone. She had receipts of her payments and sent them to their headquarters. SmartStop was just trying to get over on her. We decided to move our stuff out of this horribly owned company. They had DOUBLED the cost per month, without upgrading anything in the facility. So I went there on my lunch break to open the unit, after all the bills were paid, and there was another lock on the unit. So she had to call again and get that removed, and I wasted my time going over there. So that weekend (Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend), I rented a U-Haul and we drove 40 miles from where we live to get our stuff out of the storage unit. I pull up in a U-Haul truck, and some lady that works there runs out and says I can't pull my vehicle inside. They decided to paint all the outside units that day. So they only way we were able to get out stuff out is to roll a cart an 1/8th mile in and an 1/8th mile out, at least 6 times with two carts to get our stuff out of the unit. It was almost like they did this on purpose because they knew so many customers were moving their stuff out. We were not the only ones moving out of this HORRIBLY run storage place. At least 6 families were moving there stuff out at the same time. And ALL of them were as ANGRY as we were. If you need a storage place, look elsewhere. This is the WORST managed and ran company we have ever had to do business with.

While the facility on King was always clean and well maintained, this review is more about Jean in the Lenfest office. I just moved to a new city and due to a mistake in scheduling, my movers didn't show up to pick up my things from storage until 6:30 p.m., the facility closes at 7:00, and it had to be done by that night since I was leaving town early the next morning for my new home. I was panicked, but Jean was so incredibly kind and understanding of my situation and went WAY above and beyond by coming over to King location after she got off work at 7:00 and stayed until almost 9:30 (!!) when my movers finally finished loading the truck so we could get out the security gate. Even the movers thought she was amazing and said she is proof that there are still wonderful people in this world. Without Jean's kindness, my move could have been a disaster, but she saved the day! She's a huge credit to the company IMO. I even tried to compensate here but she flatly refused (but still in a kind way, of course). Thank you, Jean! You are still my hero!

The staff were also helpful in guiding me to tie down my items to my truck to avoid getting pulled over. Did not have any issues during my time regarding the safety of my items and was content with how clean and maintained the location was. The staff was very kind, and it was a wonderful experience. Many places had high base rates, misleading "free month" promotions, price increases, and extra insurance or admin fees. We also checked Trojan and Extra Space--Trojan, in particular, advertised two free months online but only honored it if you moved in exactly on the 1st of the month, which is unrealistic. In contrast, A1 honored a free month even though we moved in mid-month and ultimately gave us a much better deal. Michelle made the whole experience smooth--highly recommend!
