Awesome ramen spot. Always crowded so go early or expect a wait. On a Wednesday evening we had a 20 minute wait and it was worth it. Ramen broth is rich and deep with flavor. Noodles are homemade and you can buy them to take home. You can order eggs in ramen as poached or molten, with molten being a slightly harder yolk. Options and add ins are endless. Serving size is excellent. I had a spicy duck fat chicken ramen bowl and the fried duck fat chicken is amazing. Large pieces will not leave you wanting. You can also get the duck fat fried chicken as an appetizer. Large selection of sake as well, which you don't often see (I had beer, but still nice to see). They also have sushi and Poke. After years in Ann Arbor, finally made it into Slurping Turtle. We came in on a summer Saturday night and it was extremely busy. We were quoted a 45 minute wait, but it really only took about 30 minutes to get a table for our party of 3. After sitting, we were helped quickly and able to place our order. We all tried different variations of ramen, I ordered the Tan Tan Men. Since it was so busy, we had to wait a fairly long time to receive our ramen. When we got it, it was quite good! Maybe not the best I've ever had, but very solid quality compared to alternatives in the area. I think my dish could have definitely been spicier, given that it was listed on the menu as a spicy option. All in all, I'd recommend making a visit while in the Ann Arbor area. read more

Very happily stumbled upon this spot on a day trip to Ann Arbor. Ahhhhmazing noodle bowls. Homemade ramen was spectacular. Flavors were on point. Been to Slurping Turtle a ton over the years. Definitely a favorite spot for ramen -- it's tough to beat. It's kind of the only thing that's worth getting on the menu here though, with a couple exceptions. The sushi rolls are super expensive and pretty mid and I didn't care for the chahan. However, the duck fat fried chicken is very good and I'll also mess with a tempura shrimp bao if the mood strikes. So, it's where you want to go for ramen, but there are better options for Japanese elsewhere in town. read more

It doesn't come with an egg like some of the other options (+$2 for a molten or poached egg). Ann Arbor is a competitive environment for good Japanese food with so many great options. That said, I'd definitely add Slurping Turtle to the must-try list. I tried their famous duck fat fried chicken shoyu. The broth was rich and flavorful, and the chicken was tasty. The noodles are homemade and top tier. The chicken was delicious. Jammy eggs were perfectly cooked. My only compliant is that the appeal of fried chicken, in my opinion, is the crunch. You lose that when it soaks in broth. It is still worth a try, but on my next visit, I will get the duck fat fried chicken as an appetizer with the classic shoyu as my main. We also got sushi, which was pretty standard. Service was great, but restaurant is not very big and gets busy, so be prepared to wait for a table. read more

Ambiance...get here early as they don't take on-line reservations and it fills up. Likewise, there isn't much waiting room if you walk in, so winter waiting could be cold. Also, if you are easily distracted by TVs in your restaurant, beware that there are a number of them inside and only people facing one direction can see them. If your dinner guest is facing the TVs, it might be difficult to get their attention. Lastly, much of the seating is communal, so if that isn't your jam, you should be aware that you might not get lucky enough to score one of their booths. Overall, the food is well worth the visit. Everyone was hard at work, yet still had time to smile and greet guests. There was one worker (possibly management) who would make rounds and check on every single guest/party. Now this next part is to be expected, but it is slightly pricey, especially when you include a well deserved tip. One bowl of Tonkotsu Ramen and a Dragon Roll with a suggested tip ran me about $50. But, for once in a while, treat, I would definitely suggest this location! It is a really perfect broth, filled with mushrooms, and other veg and topped with potato chips, which yes, sounds nuts, but it's so good. The host was rude, unaccommodating and had an attitude big enough for everyone in the restaurant. We showed up on time for our 6:30pm reservation and we were told our table wasn't ready. The host said it would be 5 to 10 minutes. An hour later they finally seated us. It was not that busy. There were plenty of other options like a high top table and tables in the downstairs dining area. They were unwilling to seat us anywhere but a low top table because my name was not on the original reservation. We were not allowed to sit at the bar because the bar was actually a table we were told. No alternative solutions were offered, no thank you for your patience, no I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
