My niece chose Umi Sushi for her birthday dinner recently - she and her sisters love their udon! Our group of seven was seated right away and service was attentive and polite. The menu is pretty large and it was tough to decide what to get - I decided on one of the sushi bentos which came with four pieces of California roll, tempura, two pot stickers, six pieces of sashimi, and four pieces of nigiri. Our food didn't take too long to come out, and everything looked great. The bento was a good amount of food, and I really loved the tempura. It was super light and crispy like it should be, and the assortment of veggies was nice. The sushi was okay, not the best I've had but still good. Overall it was a nice meal and I would visit again, but maybe try some of their specialty rolls next time. They have a large menu of different options that sounded tasty. read more

Yet another Korean-Japanese place in Ann Arbor. Near US 23 Plymouth Road exit, is tucked away near Sweetwater cafe. Small room but comfortable (cozy is good description). Service had a very clear mom and pop feel. There was a large screen rotating through their sushi creations. While I was unclear about the relationship of the roll named to the creations (except for the volcano) there is clearly a lot of pride in them. While I expected more tightness in the rolls, these were well assembled. There is unique artwork directly relating to the bento and sushi and the restaurant itself. A food artist clearly has a hand in this place, and for that reason alone it is worth finding the more than ample parking tucked away behind the place. BTW the music was not too loud but calming: this could be a good secret hideaway for conversation. read more

I got a takeout order on a Friday evening. This sushi restaurant is in a little strip mall about half a mile off of US 23 on Plymouth Road. I ordered carry out online through the site. I ordered the Michigan roll, a tuna/avocado roll, and a ikura nigiri. It was ready when promised. The set up of the restaurant for picking up carry out orders during Covid was good. They put your order on a table and then stepped away while you signed the credit card statement. I was not happy with the taste of the Michigan roll, it tasted off to me, but they refunded the cost of it. The rest of the order was very good. I love Ikura and this did not disappoint. The size of the order was not as big as what you would get at some other sushi restaurants, but you are also not paying as much for your sushi as you may elsewhere. Let's talk about the good things first: ample parking, food comes out fast, food tastes decent, friendly staff. Why the 2 stars? I ordered the budejigae/army stew, which is notably more expensive than say a soondubu; I ordered it because it had lot of fillings: rice cakes, ramen, spam, etc. As I started eating, I realized there were no rice cakes. It took awhile for our server to check in on us despite it being Saturday dinner time. Perhaps they are short-staffed, and we can all be a little more understanding. I explained that my dish came with rice cakes, and she that she didn't know about it but that she was sure they ran out. She did not offer to check to see if it was simply missed or offer any alternatives. It felt dismissive and sneaky. If she knew there were no rice cakes to begin with, why not disclose that when I ordered? Maybe she forgot, and that's human, but when I brought it up, is it unreasonable to expect some kind of comparable alternative? I get it. Sometimes things run out or are forgotten, but there is usually some way to make it right. We've been to Umi Sushi four times now and it's easily our favorite sushi spot in Ann Arbor! The flavors are great and the fish quality is much better than many other places. I will admit that sometimes their rolls are not super tightly rolled but the flavors more than make up for it! Our favorite roll is the Wolverine roll. If you're a fan of tuna, shrimp tempura, and eel, you will love this roll. The Popcorn Lobster roll was our second favorite! We were looking to mix things up a little and this roll was perfect for it! We have also enjoyed the Diablo roll in the past. We also went here for a birthday celebration and decided to go a little fancier than usual. We got the smaller of the two Sushi for Two boats. This boat came with 12 pieces of chef's choice sushi (all nigiri for us), a 8 piece California roll, and a 8 piece spicy tuna roll. The boat was excellent!!! Not only was it aesthetic, it also contained great sushi. All 12 pieces of sushi were fantastic. Especially the salmon and tuna!! The quality of the fish was great. We finished the night with tempura ice cream with vanilla flavor. It was the perfect dessert to share with someone. Also, try their sake bombs!!!!! It's only $5 and is almost the same amount of beer as their draft! As for the environment, it's quite lovely. It's more on the quiet side, which I enjoyed. It's always staffed with whom I believe the owner is and one waitress. Both are very attentive and provide excellent service! I've never gotten take out from here before but it seems pretty popular! First time here and we were not disappointed. I ordered just a few pieces of sashimi and a side salad. I don't remember much about the salad, just your average salad you get at Japanese restaurant. However the sashimi was excellent. I'm kind of a snob when it comes to raw scallops and this one definitely stacked up against the best. I did end up with one of the combos. The staff was fast and friendly. The combo was $17 with a nice assortment of raw and cooked items. It wasn't labeled a bento, but simply a combo. I got the Golden California and the Crunch Munch roll. The sushi was good but I'm more impressed at how fast the food came out. I only had about 35 minutes for my lunch break and I was in and out of there in less than 30 minutes (eating and paying) and that's pretty freakin impressive if you ask me. I didn't try and if the special rolls because I was just craving some basic sushi rolls, but it was good. I'd really prefer to give 3.5 stars because it was good just not fabulous. Three of us in our party and we ordered.... 1. Edamame, simple yet satisfying to eat out of the shell. 2. Alaskan soup, lots of egg with plenty of lobster (or crab, I can't remember which it had) and shrimp. It comes out in a wonderful cast iron pot. Plenty to share or a meal for one. Good flavor. 3. Salmon Avalanche roll, the salmon was good, a bit mushy mouth feel for me but still good. The sauce on top was just sweet enough not to overpower. 4. White Tiger roll, my favorite from tonight! All around great taste. Crunchy top with plenty of crab meat salad and a yummy tempura shrimp. Each roll came with a cup of miso soup and a small salad. My soup had 2 tiny squares of tofu but good taste. The salad did have a very nice, light dressing. 5. Spicy chicken and shrimp, delicious. We ordered it medium and it was pretty spicy, glad we didn't go hotter. We ordered it with brown rice and that was an extra $2! Service was fair at best. Our food came out quickly and the correct temperatures. However, our water and soda was never refilled but the ice tea was, hmm? For the three of us we got out of there, with tip, for $70. So a bit pricey and I would have preferred better service for that cost. There was, however, enough food for us. Parking could be an issue during busier times but we got here at 6ish and were lucky enough to find a parking space right in front. There's more parking at the back of the plaza with a short walk. Last month, my long-time friend Toni and I decided to stop off and try this place. I can honestly say that this will be my first and last I will eat food from this restaurant. The quality of the fish left a lot to be desired, and must have been Carp caught in the local Huron River. Nevertheless, they promise that they have the freshest fish of any sushi restaurant in the Great Lakes region. If that is the case, subconsciously I expected the chef to find a "Vote For Nixon" presidential campaign button inside the belly of one of the fish that it had ingested decades ago. Nevertheless, I am so convinced that the fish used at this restaurant are so old, they are collecting Social Security and have been doing so for a long, long time. After eating at this place, both Toni and I feel that Umi is doing more harm to American's concept of what sushi is all about. Likewise, the quality of the rice left a lot to be desired, as it was loosing its stickiness. The broth was fishy tasting, the noodles looked and tasted like they were from a packet, the egg was overcooked so the yolk had turned gray, and the whites had separated and were in several different pieces.
