a glass of beer on a table

The coolest thing about Sloc's Bar & Grille is that it is attached to Slocum's Bowl-O-Drome, on Pennington Road, Ewing, N.J. If old school bowling is your thing, then this is a wonderful place to indulge yourself. The lanes are old, but full of families and leagues throwing strikes and spares, while the small tavern down the hall, pours suds from mostly well known national brands, and uses the kitchen in back for better than your average bear's bar grub. The dining area was full of groups playing cards on St. Patrick's Day, with most folks garbed in green. I sipped on my Coor's draft, watching the NBA as I waited for my order of pierogi to be served. The friendly barkeeper was more than happy to change the channel to the game, as nobody else seemed to be interested in the NASCAR race showing on all the screens. Not even the grumpy dude sitting next to me at the bar seemed to mind. I guess there was enough green in my Eagles Super Bowl LII hat to satisfy him. And, those pierogi were as good as advertised. Moderately chewy doughy dumplings stuffed with mashed potatoes and topped with a motherload of sautéed onions. They appeared to have been boiled and then fried in a pan, as the surface was browned and crisp on the surface, and tender within. The plate was heavy on the crude oil, but that added to the overall homestyle flavor. Delicious. Best of all, the prices were reasonable. 8 ounce draft plus decent snack for just over $10., is quite the deal. Although rather old, there did not appear to be any access issues, as everything was on the ground floor with sufficient space for assisted walking or even the private medical chariot.

A regular stop for me and Arlene. Slocs is a bar that has above average bar food, good soups and a special menu with higher-end dishes. Like "Cheers," everybody knows your name. It has its own cult following by a cast of friendly locals. If you're ever in the Ewing NJ area stop by, have a bite to eat, make a friend or two and write your review.

Our service was excellent. Our server, Dawn was a rare mix of professional attention and service and a very peppy and sunny personality. We noticed that everyone seemed really happy to be working there. We can be high maintenance but she never skipped a beat with a big serving of "happy you're here" !! We spent a bit of time at the bar and found it to be a really fun kind of bar. We highly recommend this lovely historic Inn ....

We ordered a pierogi appetizer to share and some holiday cocktails to start. For entrees we had pork chops that were cooked to perfection and served over a sweet potato purée with a blackberry gastric. We also had the 7 fishes over linguine offered in red, white, hot or hot. I chose red hot. It was delicious with calamari, shrimp, lobster, mussels, clams, and fish. The penne vodka with sausage and peas was also delicious and a generous portion. The salmon dish was also excellent but had barely any risotto and 6 string beans. Overall, Blooming Grove is a favorite of our extended family and we visit fairly often. The only room for improvement is the portion size of some of the dishes in comparison to others.

They recently acquired MD brewery DuClaw as well and continue to brew their beers and distribute under the same name. They distribute widely across NJ, PA, NY so it's pretty easy to find at liquor stores and restaurants, and I've had their beers many times over the years. Their beer is pretty solid with some fun and inventive offerings. My girlfriend and I stopped into their taproom for the first time on a Sunday afternoon and it was quite possibly the worst taproom we've ever been to out of 80+ NJ breweries we have visited together. It looks like they concentrate all of their time and effort on production and distribution and have not spent any time creating a decent place to hang out. Almost no decor. All plastic cups (a personal pet peeve of mine in breweries). Not even a permanent bar of any kind. There were only four other people the whole time we were there so the atmosphere was pretty dead. We ordered flights, and the names of the beers were written in abbreviations right on the cups which made it impossible to read on the darker beers. But the beer was very good! We really enjoyed our flights and bought a six pack of the imperial pumpkin ale to bring home with us. We'll continue to drink their beer, but I don't recommend coming to the taproom at all.

I will stop in on occasion to fill a growler or grab some cans to go but would not want to spend any time here. A basic remodel would change the game or at a minimum a cleaning and fresh coat of paint wouldn't hurt either.

Walking in, the…read morerestaurant is definitely a number of notches up from your typical bar and grill, but still retaining a casual and fun atmosphere (love the moody greens and browns with the light and bright windows and white tiles). As a hint, I pointed to the Mother's Day reservations as this is definitely the place to take a special someone for a special occasion. All of the specials - drink and otherwise - are beautifully drawn on a big chalkboard at the entrance, so if you like to explore cocktails and mocktails, they're inventive here. Counter to some of the reviews here, we experienced attentive service with our tie dye hobbyist server Zach. He's so friendly and gets that New Orleans version of hospitality that gets to know the customer and tell a little bit about himself - hence the tie dye convo! I'm a beer girl and ordered the Spellbound Coffee porter from an extensive beer list (draft and bottles) and my husband and his friend appreciated the whiskey choices. Menu offers a little something for everyone without being overwhelming. Sandwiches, pizza, pasta, steaks, sushi and Mex - but it does really all make sense (and our friend tells us the Philly sushi roll is great)! Kids have decent choices too and I have to say that the fries that accompany the grilled cheese are probably in my top 5 of all time - crispy with visible salt flakes and peppers. I would also count my apple walnut salad as crave-worthy and one of my top salads of all time - a perfect bite of lettuce, blue cheese, dried fruit and walnut every time - I am not sure that I can try anything else on the menu when I go back (and I had a hard time choosing, as there were many vegetarian options!). Mac and cheese short rib sando makes a statement upon delivery and was delicious according to our friend. Not pictured, but chicken parm was also perfectly crispy and delicious. Caesar salad was a winner and my selective husband told me it was very good, along with his high marks for atmosphere, drinks and service. Definitely a five star experience!

Not only was it a delightful experience for my tastebuds, it covered the entire plate. This was one of the few times I couldn't finish my meal. It probably didn't help that I had an order of their amazing bread and butter. I love the vibe at this spot. They serve top notched meals in a casual environment. I have visited this spot at least 10 times and they don't miss. My wife has the Rye & Gochujang Radiatori. I tasted it and it was delish. I never thought to add gochujang to a pasta dish, but I will be doing that in the future. If you have room for something sweet, end your meal by sharing Brioche Doughnuts. We get them every time we visit.

Also loved the smash burger -- delicious and no pretentious frills -- but the fries were the standout; homemade, hearty and crispy. The pumpkin and pretzel casarecce pasta was very tasty as well, and the small-sized portion was plenty. Clearly the chef is talented and takes their work seriously. Given that they don't sell liquor & you can bring your own, the prices are fantastic. Cheapest dinner I've had since the early 2000s lol. They do have some N/A wines, beers and cocktails for those who don't care about booze. I could see this place being perfect for breakfast or lunch because it has beautiful views of the river. We came for dinner, and within 20-30 minutes, it was pitch black outside so we didn't get to enjoy the view. The lighting in the restaurant for dinner is too bright, which takes away from the atmosphere and makes it seem more like a takeout restaurant than upscale dining. Our server was great but the food took way too long to come out. It was about 30 minutes to get a salad. Not sure if they were short-staffed or that's just how it is but because the food was good enough, we will definitely come back to find out!
