We were very excited to try the slick pig after all the positive reviews we have heard about. The brisket had a lot of fat on it, The pulled pork was just ok and the shredded chicken was just ok also. The biggest disappointment was the so called famous fried pies, It was nothing more than a one dollar hostess pie repackaged and and sold for five dollars. I hope this was just an off night for them but we probably will not return. read more

Never, EVER again... I had such SUPER high hopes for this place after hearing everybody rave about them and sampling their hickory smoked wings at Taste of Murfreesboro... It's been over a month now, and I won't go back. Table was sticky, the bathroom was a wreck (literally) and the food... Well, the ribs were all fat, and apparently not properly cooked or handled, one of the two. We were sick as dogs for two days straight afterwards. We ordered some wings to take home for later also, and they were covered with hair. Serves me right for mocking the earlier review that had the same issue. None of the kitchen staff had any kind of hair cover on, and masks were only half on... It's easy to see how the hair issue occurred and how the problem with the ribs could have been unsafe food handling practices. The sides were fairly mediocre also. Really a massive let down, and my search goes on for anybody that can do world class ribs in Murfreesboro. read more

Damn good BBQ! My wife and I are moving from CA to VA and on our way we wanted a taste of some Tennessee BBQ. So we turned to our yelp app and found this place. We were not disappointed. What we got authentic small town restaurant feel with food that will set the standard for all BBQ to follow. Staff was friendly and they had a hard working young man that was running around the complex picking up plates sweeping floors and whipping down tables. A clearly hard worker. My wife got the BBQ pulled pork. It had a naturaly smokey flavor that welcomed the taste buds with every bite. I had a 1/2 rack or ribs that fell of the bone on every pull. Most popular bbq joint in Mursfeesboro (or Murfesbura, as the locals would say it). We popped in during a quick dinner break between housecalling and it was packed with families. Everyone is snacking on the platters of free peanuts at every table while waiting on the food to come zooming out. Line moves quickly! I got the full rib plate (half would have been smarter, but eyes are apparently bigger than the stomach. Just enough fatty trim to give the ribs flavor, though I would have liked less of the burnt ends. Charcoally and tough, it still wasn't enough to detract from the ribs. Sides are almost healthy tasting here compared to other places. I had the cole slaw and it was on the lighter/tangier side. The white beans were a little on the saltier side, but had a nice flavor. We did have a slight problem with the delivery company BUT the food had Everyone talking - it was amazing. Seemly everyone's favorite was the Brisket but the ribs and smoked turkey was all great. The Middle Tennessee Submarine Veterans decided we wanted barbecue following our meeting, so 16 of us invaded The Slick Pig BBQ. They were great! They found seating for all of us, and even gave us our own waitress to keep an eye on us. When it comes to barbecue, I tend to prefer pork to beef most all of the time. But one of our members lives near there and is a regular there. He highly recommended the beef brisket, so I gave it a try. It was very good. It had a lot of bark on it but was still tender inside. One of the best BBQ places in town. My wife and I also get the ribs and smoked wings. For our sides we get the baked beans and Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was subpar the last time we visited. We tried to branch out and try the coleslaw. . . . It was probably the worst coleslaw I've ever had in my entire life. My wife and I consider ourselves coleslaw connoisseurs and this was not it. Stopped in here quite accidentally while I was in Murfreesboro taking care of some paperwork at MTSU. I'm always a fan of good BBQ and I happen to live very close to Martin's down in Nolensville. This place surpasses Martin's! We came in around 2 and there was a slight pause in the lunch rush, but it picked up right around 2:30. I bet this place gets crazy on the evenings. We got the redneck taco and the pork platter with white beans. The meat was seasoned and cooked to perfection, not too greasy or overdone at all. They have all sorts of delicious looking sides including fried pickles and I wish we would have gotten some. :( The one thing that wasn't perfect was the cornbread served with our meal, it was a tiny bit on the drier side. Even though we were stuffed I had to get back in line for some dessert to take home. We picked the coconut cream pie which may have had a couple bites taken out of it while we were driving back home. Sick pig is awesomeness!!! They have the best smoked wings in this area hands down. Ribs are super good to. I've only had there baked beans side dish they were okay but could use some meat and spicing up. They only have one location in this area I know of which is in Murfreesboro. I wish they would add a second location but until then it's worth the 25 minute drive to Murfreesboro. Prices are aren't bad either. Also try their smoked pork rinds!!! read more

Middle Tennessee has some pretty stellar BBQ joints but in my opinion the Slick Pig can hold its own against any of the major pitmasters. The food is delicious, the price is right and the service is quick and friendly and the restaurant is clean and comfortable for traditional barbecue and tasty sides. They have a door for eating in the restaurant and one to enter through for to-go orders. We ate inside their restaurant where you order at the register, they give you a number then you have a seat wherever you like. I noticed as we were waiting for our food that the staff were wiping off tables and keeping everything clean which I appreciated. I also noticed a sign that they have half-priced milkshakes on Thursdays from 2-4 pm and they had another sign with baked goods like chess pie. Everything on their menu from their drinks to food to dessert sounds sinfully delicious. I ordered JoJo's Famous Fruit Tea (Large, $2.39) and the Country Plate ($6.99) which is a hearty serving of pulled pork (Boston Butt to be exact...and baby, got back!) served with a side of white beans, cornbread and tomato/onion. There was so much pulled pork on this plate that I had to ask for a to-go box. The pulled pork was juicy and well-seasoned. Each table has a wooden carton with 4 different kinds of barbecue sauce, peppers, hot sauce, and salt and pepper. I tried a bite with each of these sauces which were each very good. The cornbread in my mind was supposed to look like a square cake but the cornbread here is flat and round like little pancakes. They do taste good and the white beans were cooked perfectly. The fruit tea is sweet but delicious. My boyfriend ordered the redneck taco ($5.99) which is pulled pork, baked beans, cheese, and coleslaw on top of cornbread. He ate every bite! We both really enjoyed our experience here and will be back. I thought that the barbecue was pretty stellar and could not find anything not to like about the Slick Pig! read more

Heard so many good recommendations about this place. Glad we finally came here on the 4th of July when it just opened, which is perfect since it wasn't packed yet. This was a traditional barbecue joint, just imagine having an indoor picnic with family and friends. We ordered the Tailgate special (20 hickory smoked wings with 1 lb pulled pork), brisket, and a rack of ribs. All of our courses came with 2 sides and toast. This ended up being too much food for us because the portions are decent, so it was worth it. The ribs was definitely my favorite, the meat was so tender that it just fell off the bone and melted in your mouth. It was sensational! The wings came with ranch and blue cheese and we're quite delicious!! I can see why they hold the reputation of best wings in the state! I was slightly disappointed with the brisket, I felt like it should have been cooked a bit longer for a better taste, because I've had better. Now, maybe the Asian clientele is little to none in this town. But as one that was visiting for the first time, I can say that I was sadly not surprised and almost amused. Stopped by the Slick Pig while up in Murfreesboro with my father. We were hungry so we thought some BBQ sounded good. I'd like to note it was around 2-3pm when we stopped by, so after the lunch rush I assume. First thing I noticed was the smell outside the building when I stepped out of my truck. The delicious smell of wood smoked BBQ echoed inside as well. The place looked pretty typical of a locally owned BBQ joint. Whenever I try a new BBQ place I typically just get a combo platter of some sort to try the assortment of offerings they may have. My father and I decided to split the large combo platter that has a little bit of everything. Now it says it feeds 2-3 people, but felt like 1-2 would be more realistic. We were a bit disappointed when we saw the quantity of items. I'll break it down below. The ribs were the first thing I decided to try. The platter came with about half a rack. They appeared like your wet variety of ribs. When I tried to cut them, I pretty much destroyed them. They were waaayyy over cooked. I know the ole mantra of ribs is that they should "fall off the bone". Well that is a misnomer to say the least. The perfect ribs will bite off the bone cleanly but cling slightly to the bone. These were mush. Tasty mush, but mush non-the-least. Nothing to write home about with the ribs. The brisket passed the hang test, yet pulled apart with an easy tug. However it was pretty dry. I'll never fault someone on brisket. It's not easy to produce the perfect brisket. Could have been dry because we came after lunch. The flavor was pretty similar to my personnel rendition. If this were Texas, I'd be more critical. The brisket was decent and paired nicely with the hot BBQ sauce. Normally I don't put sauce on brisket, but being a bit dry, it helped. The pulled pork didn't have a very appealing texture either. It was kind of mushy as well. However again, the flavor was pretty good. My favorite part of the combo platter was the smoked chicken wings and drums though. Had a very nice flavor and they weren't slimy at all, which happens sometimes when you smoke wings. I enjoyed those very much and they paired nicely with the hot BBQ sauce also. The sides were stew and cole slaw. I really enjoyed the stew, but they hardly give you any with the combo. It was like if someone took the lid off a fountain drink cup and fit as much as you could on top of it. Same with the slaw, which was pretty standard. I'd go back for a quart of the stew alone though. The sauces were pretty tasty and fit my personnel flavor style, however they didn't vary much from sauce to sauce. The vinegar one lacked flavor somehow too. I love the North Carolina style of vinegar sauce, so maybe that's why this one didn't appeal to me. All the other sauces were pretty good though. In conclusion, I'd like to try this place again someday if I'm ever back in Murfreesboro. Maybe during the lunch rush to see if the BBQ is better then. It wasn't terrible by any means, but was pretty lackluster. Don't cook your ribs so long! Give this place a try... I am just a BBQ snob lol read more

OK. Throwin' out my barbeque aficionado props. Have lived in Kansas City area for years and eaten most of what the city offers. Unique style and my favorite, but then I'm biased. Grew up in the South eating Carolina style. Have been through Memphis a bunch and eaten theirs. Have even had the famous stuff in Luling TX. I've never judged at KC's American Royal or Memphis in May, but I'm confident I can separate the handiwork of true pitmasters from the wannabes. Slick Pig is a barbeque tweener . . . not bad but not great. Based on one trip here's my attaboys and dobetters. Short wait at the order counter. Prices are extremely reasonable. Tables, booths and floor are cleaned quickly and thoroughly. I watch those things, and the Slick Pig crew was on it! Sides ranged from good (homemade potato salad) to average (greens) and mediocre (frozen fries). Still trying to grade the cornbread pancakes. Self-serve drinks. Plastic utensils and food containers. Lots of trash produced here! Now the meat . . . We both had half chickens. My wife gave it thumbs-up. I'm a little more picky. To smoke chicken properly you really need to separate the white meat (breast/wing quarter) from the dark (leg/thigh). If you smoke them connected, you're either going to have moist dark and dry white, or moist white and underdone dark. Slick Pig gives you the first, which is the better option, but it could be better by smoking white and dark quarters separately. That's how I do it at home. Later that evening we met a friend who now lives in Murfreesboro, but is from KC and has even spent time in competitive barbeque. When I told him we'd been to Slick Pig, his response was, "They're OK; not my favorite." Yep, that's a tweener rating, fershure. Three stars. read more
