Since new ownership change, this place has definitely downgraded. For a $20+ meal, the quantity and quality of food has significantly decreased. There used to be more vegetables and noodles. Instead, you get a tiny compartment of noodles and vegetables. The cabbage I got was old with brownish tint and unclean with blackish stains. The dishes were dirty too! My boyfriend and I have always seen this place as we walk through down town Fullerton. It's always caught our eyes with its large glass windows, so we finally decided to give it a try. And I'm so glad we did. We were seated right away on a Thursday, around 430ish. We were served by Vince ! And I honestly couldn't of asked for a better waiter ! Vince was so polite, friendly and welcoming. He explained the menu to us as first time comers, from picking and explaining the broth to deciding on our choice of protein. You pick a broth, a choice of meat, rice and it comes with vegetables. Before the broth came out he served us up our sauces, and they were delicious, he also helped us "fix" them with the different spices and such they had there. Our broth then came out, I went with the spicy miso and chicken, my boyfriend went with the sukanyaki and wagyu toro. We were both so pleased with what Vince helped us decide on! He showed us how to cook our meats and showed us which sauces were the best. I was so pleased with my experience here. We will definitely be coming back ! Food was good, loved the ponzu sauce and spicy miso broth good too. What was bad was the service, we came in and a party of 6 was ahead of us. When signing in you have the option of choosing high top bar table or low top table, the party ahead of us wrote down "party of 6 LOW tables". When we got in and signed for 2 we put in ANY and go seated promptly in 2/4 available high top tables. What ticked me off the most was the party of 6 crossed out the LOW right after we got seated and complained why they didn't get seated since there were 6 available spots at the high top tables where we sat (2 dirty and 4 clean). So while I was half way look though the menu the waiter who sat us asked us if we can go wait again because he made a mistake. 1. No you didn't make a mistake that party of 6 was just being rude, who decided to complain for their decision to wait for the low tables. 2. What kind of restaurant makes their customer stand up from where they were seating and wait again in the front just what the hell! But no it doesn't end there I acceptingly agree to wait again and said noting so me and my girlfriend got seat again this time at the low top table and this time the manager ask us if we can move to two available high tops next to those rude people who took our spots. Once was bad but asking twice, given the manger didn't knew we moved once already but he was really going forward with moving us if my girlfriend didn't complain and the waiter who sated us didn't say anything. We're here not to play musical chair , We're here to eat and have a good time but being asked to move twice just killed over all enjoyment and appetite, but we still sucked all that bs in and ate and paid. Definitely not how you treat your customers, at least we tipped something too rather giving nothing I had to make an effort for the waiter to take my money and get change! Worst service at a shabu spot and the worst service so far of 2017! We practically had to ask for water 3-5 times..a side of tofu cut in four small squares took nearly the end of our lunch to get. I even had to ask if they had to grow the soy in the back cause it took soooo long.. seriously! The manager or server did not offer up anything but had the nerve to be on point with a party of 5-6 because it was a worker and his buddies having lunch there. The guy that works there that was eating lunch offered to help collect dishes which was great on his part tremendously... but come on now.. if your low on staff so badd your service should not fall out deep the way it did...! And it was not busy the time we were there. 9-10 people at most in the whole spot!! To lessen the bill was given... but way too late to even consider a second visit back. Terrible customer service by Chrystal. I had a terrible experience with Chrystal waiting on my party. I've seen her before with other customers - just unenthusiastic. My first experience with her today, and she was very dismissive to the point of it being a little rude. She didn't check on us, and basically didn't do anything for us at all. I don't think she cared about anything. She didn't even card us when we ordered alcohol, and we are young (legal, but young). Another waitress and the manager served us for the night. She didn't do shit. On the contrary, this place is my favorite Shabu joint! Great food, nice location, awesome fruit infused sakes, fresh, etc. All of the other waitresses have been very nice and the manager is absolutely pleasant! Just ask for someone other than Chrystal of you want your food, don't want your broth to boil down dry, or to enjoy your night in general. read more

Hmmm....hard to rate this place. Who doesn't like shabu? Our go-to shabu place is completely organic and we feel great afterwards. Here...not so much. It tasted okay. But it's how we (a family of four) felt afterwards. Makes us wonder how much MSG is in the sauce since we weren't feeling our normal selves despite eating a fairly healthy meal. Not sure we're coming back. Our standards are fairly high and we're willing to pay more for the organic. If MSG isn't an issue then this may be the fix for any shabu cravings. read more

Sooooo....just finished up my meal here with two of my gal friends and might I say this experience was an odd one. So hot pot was definitely delicious and filling. I got the angus ribeye regular dinner. Broth was very flavorful with all the fixings and the variety of veggies was good. The peanut sauce for dipping was phenomenal! The odd part came at the end of the meal when we got our check. Our total was an off amount of $49.14 and when we paid $60 cash the waitress rounded up the total and only gave us a $10 we were thrown off by this and asked for change and she gives us two fives.... At this point it was obvious she was looking it for her tip. I understand this is an interactive experience where the server helps you out with the whole process but it's definitely uncomfortable as a customer when your waitress is more concerned with her tip than asking if we need anything else or recommend a dessert. Excellent service, delicious sauces, savory broths, and great selection of meat. Sakura Shabu Shabu I am so glad now that you are finally here in Fullerton. I was a big fan of their HB location where I often went for their shabu lunch special, fresh sushi and bar. It has been a while since I have been back but after our visit at their new location at DTF, I am definitely making this place my new shabu spot. We were there during their prime time and it was busy but we still received very attentive service from our waiter and even had the opportunity to chat with the owner. I also love the fact that they have lamb here. I was able to ordered a meat combo plate of beef and lamb with spicy miso soup. My boyfriend ordered their sukiyaki and he really liked it. Typing this reviewing is making me salivating for some delicious shabu right now. I think we are going there either tonight or tomorrow now.. :) read more

Hit and miss! When this place is crowded, you will be ignored and may wait a long time. I don't mind waiting, but I like to be acknowledged by the staff. We wanted to have shabu-shabu on Saturday but walked out not least because the loud music was thumping so hard that the bass made our seat where we waited vibrate (!). I don't need a stress response when I dine. Perhaps the owners want a certain age demographic, but unless the music is played at a reasonable level, I will always walk out. Fortunately, Fullerton has a lot of cool restaurants now and shabu-shabu in Brea isn't too far, either. It's a shame because I used to go to Mitsu-E shabu-shabu for years and had a few good experiences at Sakura, too. read more

Mildly disappointed. The food was over priced small portions. For that price, I shouldn't have to cook my own food. Everything just had a bland taste and kind of a flat waterlogged texture. Maybe it was just the seat I was in, but I was being blasted by a vent fan which diluted the experience. As a result it took 2 dry cleanings to get the smell of bland food out of my shirt. They took two parties before me. The first party I let pass because their full party was here. The second group was still waiting for their party to come but was seated before me. It had a lit up bar, neon type back lighting, and decor that makes you think you're inside a Miami club. I had the wagyu toro. After a short drop and cook in the boiling pot, I soak the meat in the dipping sauce. I popped it in my mouth. The meat was sweet, tender, and just perfect. The staff was very attentive to our needs.
