Service was great at first, but we realized that over time they started charging our credit card additional times without providing any service. Housekeepers do not follow instructions at all; they just show up and do whatever they want. This included scrubbing my nonstick griddle, thus destroying the very sensitive nonstick surface. The web app and iPhone app are both very buggy. We agreed on an arrival time between 5-6pm but she comes anytime between 1pm-7pm, and customer service sends notifications telling me that she cannot enter the apartment (of course because we were at work and no one was home). IF I COULD GIVE THIS SERVICE NEGATIVE STARS I WOULD. I have never encountered so many issues from the very beginning to the end. My roomate signed up for the service through a promotion from her job. 1. We filled out a questionnaire that stated we have a doorman. We still were contacted about copying a key multiple times. 2. We also filled out what time we would prefer someone to be in our home. That request was neglected. Not ounce, not twice but three times the cleaner was late which made me and my roomate late as well. 3. We opted for the laundry service. We also clarified that we did not want dry cleaning. Both my roomate and I were billed for dry cleaning that we did not request. It also took forever for clothes to be picked up and returned. 4.The cleaning (If you can call it that) was shabby at best. Also our cleaner did not speak fluent english. The one day we were home I wanted her to just focus on the floors and no surfaces. I had to contact the company so they can contact her. And she was stsnding right in my living room. Smh 5. The website is road block after road block I don't even think it functions its there just for show. 6. We really did want this service to work because we both aren't home alot and we can't really fit cleaning into our schedule but please do your self a favor and try some where else. Slate really offers such a great product! I found out about it from the truck signage while walking to work. I literally could not believe that such a service existed. And then now that I have it I can't imagine not having it. My story is that I own my business and work there 10-12 hours per day. I live about a 10 minute walk from work so I literally wake up and start working. By the time I am done i am so tired that I drag myself home and try to get a few hours of non-work in each day. I am also kind of a clean-freak, so I would always be coming home to a sink full of dishes or a bunch of garbage to take out. I wouldn't be able to relax if there was cleaning to do so I would clean. Then I would be done cleaning and it would be time to go to bed. repeat next day. Also something crazy that happens is that I wouldn't want to make a mess so I would do stuff like, use the same coffee cup over and over. Or eat a whole meal out of a bowl, instead of having a side plate. Use only a fork, instead of a fork + spoon. Stuff like that because I was trying to make less dishes. As it turns out, it's this amazing luxury to be able to actually just use the kitchen items I want to use and not worry about cleaning them because every day it's like magic reset and everything is back in it's place ready to use. Another thing is that I didn't like to make salad because I had to use a bowl and tongs and then I would have to clean them, so I just wouldn't make a salad. Basically the daily cleaning makes it so I can come home after working all day and enjoy my life. I have been reading books and going on long dog walks. I signed up for the five day free trial and they sent a young lady named Carmen. This woman was Hispanic and didn't speak one lick of English. I downloaded Google translate and it worked for the both of us. Despite the language barrier, let me say, that out of all the services Ive used (MyClean, Handy etc.) Carmen was the best cleaner thus far. She even cleaned my stove and refrigerator without assessing an extra fee. I planned on ditching the service after my free trial. But Im definitely going to keep Slate (Pending I keep my cleaner). I don't need my apartment cleaned five days in-a-row. So I definitely may stay if they have a once a week or twice a month option. if you're on the fence I highly recommend it! I was lured back to try slate after a bad experience a couple of years ago by an email asking to try their new and improved service with an offer of $300 applied to my account. I should have known that it was too good to be true - the $300 is applied only when you commit to 12 weeks of service. I still decided to give it a go, and signed up on a Friday to have them start the following Monday. No one showed up on Monday, so I emailed them to find out the week was "cancelled" on their app by mistake. I was rescheduled for a keeper to come the next day, yet I received an email that same morning notifying me the keeper wasn't going to be able to make it that day. The following day, the keeper arrived 2 hours later than the scheduled time, did a mediocre cleaning, and left the trash and dirty mops behind for me to clean up. The next morning, I received an email notifying me that keeper wasn't going to be able to make it that day, yet again. On top of that, my card was swiped for twice the amount of my weekly service without my authorization. Dealing with them has been a nightmare, and it has been mostly logistical which is supposed to be the most seamless part of the process. It has been a huge ordeal, and all I received was 40 minutes of a mediocre cleaning. Based on my experience, nothing has changed with Slate, if anything, I think they are even worse now than before. STAY AWAY FROM SLATE!!! These people are crocks and I cannot stress enough how terrible the service they provide. We used Slate for the first and last time about a month and a half ago. The cleaning lady was late. The house was never actually cleaned. She made the bed poorly and that's about it. However, she did manage to lose the spare key to our apartment that she got from the doorman. Our building's policy is to replace the locks if the doorman's spare is lost on the expense of the tenant. We called Slate to explain the situation. At first they told us the key was in the apartment. It was not. Then they told us the cleaning lady will come by the next day to look for it. We of course had to wait around for her all day (if only I had a spare key somewhere), but she never showed up. Neither she nor Slate even bothered informing us that she will not be coming. She did try to stop by the building a few days later to get the id she left with the doorman as collateral back. Eventually, they admitted she probably lost the key and agreed, in writing, to pay the bill for changing the locks. We informed the building that there is no hope of finding the key and the lock was changed and we paid for it. We sent the bill to Slate and for the past 3 weeks they have been ignoring us completely. No reply to the multiple emails we've sent them and it appears they have decided to just pretend like this never happened. So whatever you do, don't use Slate. Their technique for cleaning your apartment is apparently losing all your keys until you're locked out and the mess doesn't bother you anymore. Shit company. read more

They are very disorganized and sometimes the house keeper just doesn't show up and you will only know that when you get to your place by the end of the day (they have no control of that and sometimes they find out when you complain). At first we were really happy with this service. The cleaning was to a high standard and we even left a positive review. What we discovered is that they are ok until something goes wrong. We had a cleaner who had a habit of throwing small things away. Nothing major so we didn't make a fuss. Then on one cleaning she took a bag full of really high quality donations for the goodwill - clothes, books etc - hundreds of dollars worth of goods. And she trashed them. We found them in the trash with all the recycling and other waste, which means that for months we had been separating out the recycling, only for her to throw them away in the trash. We paused the service, and despite promising us that they wouldn't SLATE CONTINUED TO CHARGE US. Probably about 20 emails went back and forth about this. In the meantime, they replaced our cleaner. THEY SENT A PERSON WITH ZERO CLEANING EXPERIENCE WHO COULDN'T EVEN WASH DISHES AND OFFERED TO TRAIN HER ON THE JOB WHILE WE PAID FULL PRICE FOR HER. Attached are the pictures of her work. They replaced her again - with someone that didn't show up. A brand new person. That person was given our keys. We didn't get a straight answer about where the keys were when we asked. There were missed days due to snow days. We were not paid back. SLATE ARE INCAPABLE OF CALCULATING WHAT THEY OWE THEIR CUSTOMERS. AGAIN 20 EMAILS WENT BACK AND FORTH. **********THEY STILL OWE US $104 DOLLARS. THEY CANNOT BE TRUSTED TO CALCULATE WHAT THEY OWE YOU OR WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD DETAILS. THEY KEEP SAYING THEY HAVE PAID US BACK WHEN THEY HAVEN'T. THEY HAVE CHARGED US WHEN WE PAUSED.************** They have gone from a service that was valuable to us, to one that owes us money due to being charged for absent/no show cleaners. Cannot say enough bad words about this company. My boyfriend and I have pets in an NYC apartment and both work 50+ hour weeks, so needless to say we were excited at the prospect of having somebody do some cleaning multiple times a week, even if it meant just sweeping and swiffering the floors for pet hair. Despite an initial good trial week (which is completely free) we have had so many negatives experiences in the past three weeks that we canceled. 1. Despite only ever agreeing to a three times per week cleaning option, we were surprised to come home and find that our laundry had been picked up and we had been charged a fee to have Slate do our laundry. This is an extra service that some customers may appreciate, but we had never discussed it with a Slate representative, nor had it ever been discussed with our representative when agreeing to the price per week. We let this one slip and even agreed to pay for the laundry, despite never wanting Slate to do it in the first place. 2. We have been charged for 5 cleanings per week not once, not twice but THREE TIMES in error, despite only ever receiving (and signing up for) three cleanings per week. We have communicated this with Slate week after week and have received prompt apologies, but the issue continues to persist and one of the charges has yet to be refunded. Bear in mind this has happened three times in three weeks. 3. Slate sells itself on the idea that somebody comes while you're at work, no hassle, and you come home to a seemingly magically clean house. We were told that our cleaner would arrive "around 10:30" every day, making it clear that we don't leave the house until 10AM and do not want anybody arriving before that while we're getting ready to go to work. Twice a cleaner has showed up before 9:30 AM, catching us in the shower. Also, the arrival window seems to be a 5 hour window as I came home once at 2:30 to find the cleaner just arriving. 4. In addition to an unpredictable arrival, we have had a cleaner show up twice on days that they were not supposed to come. We have a MWF cleaning schedule, but have had two Tuesdays where a cleaner appeared unannounced. Also, in the three weeks we've been with Slate, we have had two cancellations and two cleaners, which made us unhappy as we were already hesitant about one person that we've never met coming in to our house while we're not there and cleaning 5. The cleaning, quite frankly, is bad. Our first cleaner, which we had for two weeks, did a decent job after we gave very specific instructions. Our new cleaner does little to no cleaning, but "tidies up." This may work for the clean freak household that only needs somebody to make the bed and do the dishes, but cleaning in terms of using any sort of cleaning product is extremely limited. Just yesterday we requested that our cleaner spend the 1 hour they are here sweeping and swifferring the floors of our 500 square foot apartment and cleaning off the bookcase shelves. I do this multiple times per week and it takes me 35-40 minutes total. When we came home yesterday, the bookcase had not been touched and while the bedroom had been thoroughly swept, nothing had been swiffered and there was significant hair build up. This evening about 24 hours after our "cleaning" I swiffered the floor of the living room and went through 5 swiffers that were completely black within seconds. The bookcase had also not been touched at all. I now wonder if a) our cleaner has ever spent the 45min-1hour Slate promised b)if in the past two weeks the floors have been swiffered at all. In short, Slate has been an extremely disappointing experience. It's a great idea, and we were more than willing to splurge price wise for a consistently clean house, but we cannot justify continuing to be charged for services that were not agreed upon and receiving seriously bad cleaning. The text communication is a nice touch, but the customer service department seems to have serious issues communicating with the cleaners and the billing department. Here's hoping that we get reimbursed for the overcharge from weeks ago that we still haven't received and that we don't get charged next week in error despite canceling. read more

Found out about Slate through my girlfriend's job, sounded like a cool service so we figured we would try it out. After an initial hiccup (the cleaner called out of work on the first day we were supposed to get service), Slate promised us we would receive 2 hours of cleaning the first day. Sounded great! The cleaning itself was great. Our apartment was clean and well-organized. The customer service rep we spoke with was very thorough and even followed up during the day to make sure our apartment door wouldn't self-lock - we made it quite clear that it did not and even specified that building security would need to lock the door (since they had to unlock the door when the cleaner arrived). That's the issue - when I came home, the door was unlocked. It was very upsetting to know that our apartment was left open to anyone walking up the hall for hours and hours. Doesn't matter how good the cleaning is, the disregard for the safety of our belongings was unacceptable. Needless to say we cancelled the service. After emailing them about the issue 5 days ago, we are yet to receive any follow-up from their team who previously answered emails within an hour. It's very disappointing that they chose to ignore our concern and pretend that it would go away if they just ignored it. I am so used to having a spotless apartment everyday that it would be hard to go back to weekly cleanings. I was considering taking a star off for the laundry service which has its problems but if I think of it as a included free service then I cant complain too much. They do seem to be improving the issues with laundry pick up/drop off scheduling and randomly picking out items to dry clean. The cleaning staff are all very hard working but need a bit of direction, after a while of the same person cleaning your place everyday its nice having someone that knows your home and preferences so well that everything is always in the right place. read more

Scheduled a cleaning to which the cleaner shows up without any supplies (and with no communication from Slate to make sure I have them, even after I specifically mentioned it was for a move in cleaning), so had to reschedule for the next day. And next day cleaner is a no-show, despite having confirmation from Slate they would show up. Also doesn't help that the cleaner didn't know any English so made communication that much harder. EDIT: Slate reached out to me apologizing for the service and never charged me for this cleaning, so I changed this rating to be 3 stars. FOLLOW UP: I'm upping my star rating from a 1 to a 3, because after I gave customer service an earful, the CEO called me personally to listen to my feedback and did everything he could to make the situation right. He credited me for the weeks I had paused, and rectified the 1x lump sum charge. I still cancelled my service, but he did rectify the billing issue, was very responsive, and was very nice in his conversation with me in listening to what I think they need to focus on to succeed. I do like the concept of the company and their service, and they seem to be good, solid people trying to grow their once traditional small business in what is now a disruptive service/technology (and very competitive) market place. She comes in, pets her, throws a tennis ball for her while she picks up her toys and the best is what she showed me today. A selfie on her phone with our dog! I have to say, I was skeptical at first. It seemed too good to be true for a service to be so affordable and so simple. However, I'm beyond impressed with this service. It was super easy to sign up! My Keeper and I spoke about what I like cleaned around my house. She made sure to pay attention to those areas, and was so sweet! I'm super picky about my home, and she was a welcome addition. Yes, the web presence could use a bit more fluffing, but their app for iOS that just came out is amazing. It lets you manage the whole service yourself and communicate directly with your Keeper. In addition, the customer service supplements well until they can get accounts active on the web UI. They are super responsive and friendly! My favorite part is the condition of the laundry!!!! It arrives perfectly folded, smelling great but not overwhelming, and was cleaner than if I had done it myself. I have a dog who sheds a ton, and there was not one errant dog hair on my clothes. I'd avoid listening to the very negative reviews posted here. This service cleans thousands of homes in NYC and wouldn't be able to do so if it was a total horrible nightmare.
