I got 10 solar quotes. Everyone else you can find here I talked to, and I then went ahead and narrowed to 10 and asked for quotes. I was 100% sure I was getting panels for tax year 2018, just had to find out from who. I researched the heck out of this process. Within a 'family' of panels prices are somewhat similar not including discounts, specials, city incentives and so on. However, outside of a family it can get crazy expensive. For instance German panels that produce way less cost way more. I am partly German and I don't trust german cars so I was not paying double for a made in Germany stamp. With the price and specials I narrowed it down to the 3 lowest quotes I had gotten in conjunction with the panels that I wanted. Only one in 10 was close to Skytech price but it was panels I was not so sure about (reputable chinese panels but the combo with inverter.. was not quite sure). Skytech was giving me a low price and had a special that got me a 6.03 kW system for the same price as a 5.74 and they were a SF city company that brought the price about 4K less than anybody else for equivalent system. In addition the products were LG 335 panels and top of the line SolarEdge SE6000. Reason enough to go with SkyTech Solar. Though in the back of my head I always wanted to go with them based on all my discussions with Gary Sandusky. I gotta say he is the man to talk to about solar products bar none (I talked to a lot of people). He knows the models, what is currently failing in the market, what was improved, and so on. Explains it all in a super friendly way. This is not rocket science but after like two calls I felt like I had taken a Solar course on models, inverters micro vs single, chaining... so on. No one else mentioned a certain model to watch out for that was causing issues out there. I started asking and yup some competitors were still using those inverters. So I was 100% convinced I was going to get the best the market had to offer at the time.  Everyone from Gary, Adam, Joel, Jason and the install crew... I cannot recommend Skytech Solar enough !! 100% satisfied so far. Results: It has been 3 months (Jan-Feb-March) and yesterday my panels produced 46.66 KWh. I think that is like ~191 miles on my EV. Lowest production day ~10 KWh Highest production day ~47 KWh I was calculating (roughly) payoff with my system in conjunction with EV replacing one gas car and I calculated a savings of ~$3k per year based on my energy usage in home and driving, true up... so on. I think this is a conservative estimate and assumes a static $3.5 gal and current E-Energy prices out 20 years. ~5 years system payoff. 10 years $15K savings 15 years $30K savings 20 years $45K savings read more

Per the owner, they are out of business and no longer able to meet their contractual obligations. As a local provider, they also weren't the cheapest installer but we wanted to support the community. Should have gone with lower cost "big guys". History: 30% of our system went offline ~2 years after installation. After weeks of back and forth arguments on contractual obligations and Skytech's request for the manufacturer to send new microinverters, their installer finally came out, fixed the issue in a very short time, and confirmed the initial installation was done very poorly and it wasn't a hardware malfunction. Fast forward another 2 years and 30% of the system is out of service again. When asked to send someone out, the owner is claiming they went out of business with NEM3 changes and can only provide a reference for support (at full service rate). I guess we have to find 3rd party support now despite our 10 year service warranty or whatever. read more

Had a great experience getting my solar array installed by Skytech, and even referred them to neighbors who had the same experience. However, 10 years on when I need service, there is none to be found with Skytech. After much back and forth, they fixed some of the micro inverter issues, but their tech mis-entered data so we can not track panels effectively, and simply stopped answering calls and emails. Originally when I posted a poor review, they tried to bribe me to take it down by offering service at no charge if I'd take down my honest negative review. Wanting a small local company to succeed, I paid for service and got partial results. Just wanted folks to know. read more

Like several other 2022 posts. Was fine years ago, but the latest interaction has been completely unsatisfactory. I now recommend avoiding Skytech. And if you do use Skytech, do not pay them until you are 100% satisfied. (See other reviews, too). They seem only semi-competent leaving me with possibly a non-productive second system for $10K. They are extremely disorganized. Once they are paid, Colin went from calling me several times a week to not responding to me. (A) Skytech installed a system in 2016. Continues to be working well. (One optimizer had failed, but that's not their fault.) They seemed like a scrappy company in 2022, so I was willing to do more business with them. (B) I wanted 8 more panels installed in late spring 2022. Colin, the owner, would call me several times a week. Always phone calls. Email was mostly ignored. The panels and setup took 12+ phone calls to negotiate (it should not have been that hard). Finally agreed upon a second 3.8KW inverter (Colin said it was lying around, which I could get for free ,after I refused to pay for it) + 8 panels. The initial contract they wanted me to sign had several errors in their favor, which I had to correct. (C) The crew came out early Aug, and had zero awareness of my many discussions with Colin, including photos I had sent Colin. They had a 6KW inverter not the 3.8KW inverter. Friendly crew, but it took them two days. (D) While installing the new system, they found the 2016 system piping was coming apart at the joints on the roof, exposing the insulated wires to the elements There was some discussion of coming back out to fix things and how it was too difficult. (E) Everything installed looked good physically. One more person came out a third day (in the span of a week, so they do have folks to send out) to replace the bad 2016 optimizer, but he found for that panel model, the optimizer was attached to the panel (they should have known this) and he did not have a spare panel. He left with the second 6KW inverter was not yet connected to SolarEdge's monitoring. Saying this had to be done at the office. (F) Turns out they needed a photo of the inverter S/N which I had to send, because that was not done in by them in step (E). No sign of the new inverter on the SolarEdge page. (G) Colin asked to be paid and we did. Once they got paid, getting them to respond has become difficult. And it is someone else, not Colin, who responds. (H) It is now 4+ weeks since the install, I followed up via email to get the inverter connected to the internet, and find out the inverter they installed (and threw in for free) is broken ; it has a motherboard issue. It's unclear if the inverter is even producing power (!). They shall come out in a week to replace it. Who knows how this saga will unfold. In summary, they installed 8 new panels and a defective inverter. After 5 weeks, I have a system that may or may not be working and they do not know and did not care to check. It is unclear if/when this will get resolved. (J) At this point, I'll just hire some other company to fix the piping from their 2016 install from (D). It's not worth the hassle even negotiate with them. read more

After being a customer of Skytech over the past 5+ years, I can say a few things: 1. They are disorganized. When they first installed our system, they made mistakes when filing paperwork with the city that caused us to get a much lower rate for electricity buyback, which has cost us a significant sum over the years. They were unapologetic. 2. They are indifferent. Our solar panel system is currently inoperative and has been for *three months*. I contacted them in April. They said they could see that it was not working, but did not tell me. They said it could take between a week and a month to fix it. It is six weeks later and I've still heard nothing. 3. They are unresponsive. Nearly any time I reach out to them, it takes days to get a return call. 4. They have a low quality work product. Within a few weeks after we first installed our system 5 years ago, it stopped working, after which they said we may need to pay them even more to fix the brand new system. It's hard to recommend a company with these qualities, but that has been the reality of dealing with them. read more

I had installed solar panels from SolarCity in May 2015 and wanted to expand capacity since we got married and our consumption had increased. We searched across four vendors, Skytech was highly rated on Yelp (23 reviews with 5 stars as of today) and came recommended from my wife's employer which is a major hospital. We could have gone with SolarCity which is now part of Tesla ie a large corporate, but the price Skytech offered was the best and the sales process was smooth. We were excited to work with a smaller local business and signed the contract to install 11 panels on Sep 5 2019, with their assurance that installation would happen in Oct. It was the start of missed deadlines, repeated excuses, and consistent lack of communication. Skytech came to do some checks, turned my existing solar system off, then forgot to turn it off and we only realized ourselves a month later. The permit actually arrived on Oct 16 and then we didn't hear anything for weeks. After repeated messages we finally managed to get the installation on Dec 26; getting it done the same year was crucial to any solar installation in California because of tax incentives. That was nevertheless 71 days from permitting whereas the contract had stipulated an installation within 45 days, a significant delay even after accounting for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Update after posting this review: the CEO clarified it was 45 working days (was not specified by their salesperson or in the contract) which means the installation started on the 47th day. After more repeated attempts with Skytech we finally got to PG&E inspection. First time got canceled the day before, with no reason. Second time they came and pointed out a tag was amiss that PG&E would have to come and install later. So then a third inspection happened Feb 10 2020. We thought the ordeal was finally done but then Skytech told us they had to submit all documents to PG&E for final approval. More follow-ups without responses and more weeks went by until today, Apr 27. Frustrated beyond words we called the CEO and he acknowledged immediately they had made a mistake, namely we didn't need paperwork for a new system since we already had solar panels previously. So good news is the system was operational as of Feb 10 even though we never got that confirmation. I have skipped many things, for instance at one point I had to search for the CEO's contact through LinkedIn to actually get Skytech to respond. Hence the first star for this review, since he was always helpful. The second star is for their crew who did a great job installing, including putting a charger for an electric car for free. The third star is unearned. As far as we know PG&E is still bankrupt, which they declared on Jan 29 2019. The pandemic has obviously affected business although in our area really since Mar 16 2020. I don't see either factor as responsible for our debacles and what was really frustrating with Skytech was the erratic communication. They did apologize profusely and committed to improving their processes. We highly doubt it will happen given we heard the same promises throughout, you can in fact see from older reviews our same complaints were true earlier too. But we will give the benefit of doubt, we do want Skytech to succeed. read more

Very bad company todo business with we had our Inverter fail and for months nothing has being done lots of emails and phone calls. The company keeps making the excuse that they don't have anyone to come and fix the Issue. Now it looks like they don't even reply to emails. They are better options out there then Skytech they don't care about there customers. read more

If zero was possible that is what this "business" deserves. I contacted SkyTech solar on March 13th and after waiting for a callback (there's never direct contact with actual business only answering message service) my wife and I emailed our PG&E bill with usage information for our home in San Francisco and with their slow communication, back and forth this took days. Reps explained, everything looked great! We are DOING THIS! We were getting our solar application in with SolarTech on Tier2 beating the deadline of April 15 when PG@E will start charging customers more who get solar after that date! Our main goal was to make the deadline and they knew this. During the ensuing week we were contacted by more than one representative who told us they were able to do the install on our home and we would just schedule a meeting with me at our property. After hearing NOTHING from anyone, no calls No emails I called the ANSWERING service and left a message. Nothing for two days. I call March 29 and "Justin" who says he's the owner and Like Groundhog Day asks who I am, my address, who I'm working working with, and oh, by the way WE DONT INSTALL NEW SOLAR PANELS IN San Francisco! I explained to him WHY THEN did you waste my time for the past two weeks? SORRY is all this man had to say. "What do you want me to say? Sorry." Why in gods name is this company in business? They waisted a weeks of my time because they are completely INCOMPETENT. Stay away from SkyTech! I have since found out no one has heard of this company. Actually after reading other reviews about disorganization I'm glad this "company" Never touched my home. After reading about their Poor service I wouldn't let them near my Home. Again I CANNOT express the level of frustration this terrible company has caused me after wasting so much of my precious time trying to get into tier2 solar. They have caused me to lose an opportunity to get electric solar power at the current rate which will jump after April 15. Totally inept. Totally unprofessional. Completely unorganized. read more

My experience with the installation was unpackable. The crew did an excellent and professional job. Now it's 5 years later and my system went down, April 18, 2021. I was not aware of it until the end of May. So no one monitors your system but you. When I contacted Solar Tech and SolarEdge ( the manufacturer of the inverter), they were aware that my system was down but no one had the curtesy to inform me. When I was able to get service from Solar Tech 3 months after my system went down so my system was not generating power for that 3 months. Here we are in July 28th and I'm still not complete. My monitoring device is sitting in the companies office instead in my home as it should be. I have no way of telling if my system is working and if it's lacking in efficiently. The service is atrocious and I would never do business with them again. They could have had this completed if the would have planned their service call and brought all the parts needed at the initial service call. If you call for service expect at least 2 weeks or more to get that service. It took 6 weeks to get to the point that I am at and I'm still waiting to be completely done. read more

We chose Skytech Solar from among 3 different solar companies during late 2017, all of which were in the Bay Aea Sunshares program, the 3 that the program felt were the best- Skytech Solar, Peterson-Dean, and SunPower. I chose Skytech Solar over its competitors (Peterson-Dean and SunPower) based on local company and customer support. The other two companies, according to my research, had significant customer support issues. SunPower cost per annual watt was higher. Peterson-Dean came in about the same as Skytech. I was pleased there was no high pressure sales like others I had dealt with. (Can we sign you up today? Can we sign you up today? ...) The whole business dealings were simple and pleasant for a large purchase. I must say, as an engineer, I pestered them with a lot of questions, all of which were answered to my satisfaction. Did not have to deal with a nameless customer service group somewhere; my dealings were all with the same few people, so there was good continuity. The installation team was done by mid-afternoon, all in one day. Cleanup was thorough. Up and running same day, but had to wait for the final inspection and then PG&E certification a few days later. Seven months later- no problems. System working well. Power production staying right on estimated output, very pleased. Online access lets me monitor the system easily. I'm glad I did it with Skytech. read more

We've had our solar panel install for about two months now and so far so great. The Skytech team were great to work with. We originally began our conversations with Kai late 2016 and were ready to go - but with the winter rains coming in and some mishaps from a roof leak - the team was so gracious (and patient) with our many postponements as we fixed our roof. We did our install through the San Mateo County SunShares program. Of the three installers I spoke to - Kai was the most informative, and treated us like a customer (not a number on a waitlist, or a check to be collected). He was with us every step of the way, offering us alternatives proposals when we asked.. and answering the many questions we had. John and Teela were great to work with for the install and coordination. John answered our many questions and always stayed in touch with us, to keep us in the loop of potential install windows (the darn rain!) and when they might schedule us. It's been neat to see the daily generation of our solar array, and knowing we are offsetting our daily consumption (at least for summer!). It's been about 10 months now since I had Skytech do my solar panels. I participated through Peninsula Sunshares and got calls from Sunrun and Skytech. I gave Skytech my business because they responded first. It took Sunrun weeks to respond. Skytech was also not pushy. I dealt with their sales person Brian and had a wonderful experience with him. The installation was completed in 3 to 4 visits. The electrician was very knowledgeable. I was so glad to see my electricity bills go down after it was running and even further when PG&E approved the installation. When I got my first bill from PG&E after the solar installation project, my bill was down to $26. Those are the minimum fees. Love it when my bill went from ~$250 to $26. When it started raining earlier this year, there was a time when my roof had a leak. My first inkling was it was due to the solar panel work. We called Skytech and they came immediately. Turns out it had nothing to do with the solar panels as the leak was a distance away from any of the panels. But guess what? They patched the leak without charging anything. How about that for customer service? I have referred Skytech to so many of my neighbors and every single one of the houses that went solar on our street went with Skytech. read more

I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but I became a fan of Skytech because Sungevity hired them to install my solar panels. Skytech was on time and did what they came to do. The electrician, Joel, went above and beyond and totally made himself available for post-install questions. Super nice guy. I feel like Matt is my new best friend after talking with him on the phone a bunch of times. Really personable. Not just smart and friendly, sincerely nice. Great customer service and quick response time. I felt completely catered to. I don't expect much or demand much and I like to simplify and accommodate as much as possible. I was well-rewarded for my lack of effort: When the electrical inspector tried to make trouble due to the width of my alley (breaker box spec code), Skytech gently presented documents proving that a prior inspector approved the box specs (30 years ago) and I was up and running! It could have been a paperwork disaster but I had the nicest bunch of folks you could ever hope to do business with on my side. I also feel fairly certain that they know what they're doing. It's a little difficult to know how to evaluate this project; it is the largest project, in both time and cost, that I've ever had done on our home. I don't really have anything to compare against, in evaluating them. So I'll compare against other, smaller contracting jobs that I've had done, as best as I can. The good: - I had much confidence in the original sales person that I dealt with; unlike the other solar company that I contacted, he did not give me a high-pressure sales assault, he just talked about what they offered, how they would evaluate my requirements to design my system, and answered all questions clearly. - Everybody that I dealt with at Skytech Solar, responded promptly and completely to my email queries, either to provide status or answer questions. - All work, with one exception (covered later) was done quickly and with excellent quality. The county building-inspector visit went smoothly and quickly; everything was completely up to code, he gave his approval and was gone in about half an hour. Not so good: - The price included about $2600 to replace our 50-year-old power panel in back. I was aware of this issue from previous dealings with it, so was not surprised. The contractor that handled this task, was quite skilled in electrical work, but when he went to re-install the stucco around the edges, he did an appalling job; stucco spread all over the panel, bulging out up to 1" in some areas, not even flush with the wall in others. He kept justifying this by saying "I'm really not good at applying stucco"; but I wish he'd just left that job for someone else to do. By the time Skytech people came by to look at it, it was hard as rock, couldn't even be chiseled. At that point, I really didn't want to deal with tearing it all out and doing it over, so I told them to just paint over it (it's in the back of house, so rarely seen by anyone). Still, it left a bit of bad taste in my mouth. This is the only less-than-professional aspect to the entire experience. Also, it took over 5 months from signing the contract to turning on the power; I had hoped to use the 30% federal tax credit on this year's taxes, but it took too long to get the job done. I have *no* idea if this is standard for such a large job, maybe it is. Anyway, the system is installed and running, and runs beautifully!! They designed the system to generate 110% of our average usage over previous two years, and it's generating very well; the first day was mostly cloudy, and it was still generating up to 1.9KW; maximum output is 4KW. I like being able to log into the system with a web browser, and monitor its output. We are quite happy with our solar installation, and recommend Skytech Solar to anyone else who wants to do this. read more

We found Skytech Solar through the Peninsula SunShares program. I have tried to get a solar company through Sunshares FOUR TIMES to come take a look at our roof and Skytech was the only one willing to do so. The other companies thought our installation was either too small (i.e. disguised as we didn't use enough electricity to warrant a PV system) or would not work on clay tile roofs (that was Sunrun). Skytech was willing to come out to talk with us and look at our 2-tier clay tile roof. The rep provided us a very thorough analysis of what were the possibilities, the cost and the pay-back period. The installers were very professional, got the job done on our 2-tier clay tile roof and managed all the PG&E paperwork. We were able to install a 12-panel PV system. They even communicated with us through the weekend to trouble-shoot a problem we had with the monitoring device. Fantastic customer service. Unlike other companies who will only install at least a 10-panel system, Skytech is willing to install as small as an 8-panel system. read more

The team at Skytech Solar is very competent and knowledgeable about solar installations. They also have a great selection of panels, from basic to advanced LG Neon R panels, at competitive prices. I researched solar for a month before I made a decision, and met with 5 different companies in the bay area (all top rated). Skytech Solar stood out with their competitive pricing (SunShares program), good customer service and overall fit for my project. Here are the specific reasons they were the optimal choice for my project: - I wanted high-quality solar panels. LG Neon R 365W is a new module, which comes with a 25-year materials, performance & labor warranty. It has good efficiency (21.1%), low temperature coefficient (Pmax=-0.3%), and low annual degradation rate. This panel is competitive with Sunpower X-22, which is 1% more efficient, but at a higher price. It is also better than the overpriced SolarCity panels, which seem to be just rebranded older Panasonic panels. - Skytech uses SolarEdge inverters. What's great about them is they are mainstream, relatively cheap, and inform the customer. Solaredge lets you monitor the per panel output online, view Voltage, Current, Power and Energy, weather conditions. For the tinkerers among us, they have a REST API. What upset me with Sunpower & SolarCity is the fact they have the same information, but they don't make all of it (per panel) available to the consumer! Also Sunpower only does micro-inverters at the back of the panels, which are supposed to be decent, but why risk putting more electronics on a 135 degree roof (6" clearance at 100 degree ambient temp). I decided to take the route of string inverter + optimizer to be safe(r). - Skytech participates in the SunShares program, which helped make the project more affordable. With this said, these guys are apparently pretty busy, so you need to be proactive and send them e-mails to keep things moving. I can't add much to all the 5-star ratings, except to confirm that these folks are great, smart, super-solid, and do all it takes to make the customer happy. I'm an architect, energy consultant, roofer, and solar analysis software designer, so it's a big deal to make me completely happy...and I am! Unlike any of the other 8 companies I got estimates from, these folks could actually 'talk shop' with me, provide me with spec- and cut-sheets for the system components, and work with me to really get the numbers right. Even if you don't make them work this much, you can feel secure that this depth is present with Skytech. With all the rebates, tax deductions, and the great price they gave me, I'll be making money from PGE (the evil empire!) in 4 to 5 years. Everything is performing as advertised and is maintenance free. It's a crazy world in solar these days, and tons of charlatans are capitalizing on the recent market growth. I'd highly recommend working with Skytech, as they are the real thing, they've been in business forever, and they really know what they are doing. I looked at many solar companies and programs and am lucky to have found Skytech. They were the most thorough in analyzing the situation and have the highest standards and ethics. They gave me individual inverters for each panel and I am producing over the estimated values. I bought a plug in hybrid Ford Fusion and run on the sun. They also did not want to put me on a zero down program with high interest rates that would cost more in the long run. I tell everyone about them. read more

I shopped around many other before going with these guys. First of all, they were the cheapest! But they seemed like they were the most thorough, and indeed they rocked!!! From working on my (old) house and fixing up some old electrical stuff that took an extra half of day, to asking me about if i cared about various small details on how they did it, and most importantly, following up with the tax credit even 6 months (due to an SF rebate freeze) after everything was installed and payed for!!!!! Very pleased with whole process, from evaluating whether it was feasible and cost-effective for us to install solar in our house in the Inner Sunset neighborhood (on the eastern end of the city's fog belt), through their bid, and, finally, their installation. The staff was very helpful in completing the city's forms. They were prompt and kind in the installation which involved several steps. Wish all our contractors were as timely, efficient, helpful, and kind. And now I have the joy of watching my electric meter run backwards. read more

I recently had Skytech Solar install our solar panels and we are extremely happy. They are professional and pay attention to detail. The process from start to finish was extremely efficient, from the initial consultation, through to the quote and contract process, as well as the installation. They take care of the permitting with your city as well as following up with PGE to get your system connected with PGE. The whole process from signed contract, installation and permission to operate took 6 weeks. All of the employees from the appraiser to the installers were extremely polite and professional and easy to work with. Colin, the owner is very professional and extremely knowledgable about solar energy and solar panels, and was able to guide us on selecting the right system for our needs. Skytech Solar is a very professional and reliable company. Mat Ventre, the director of Marketing, is very friendly, loyal, straight forward and cooperative. Rates are competitive. Sungate Energy installed my solar panels 4 years ago: it's not a company I would recommend. Due to my neighbor's construction project, my panels will be blocked and need to be moved, after a sun-eye analysis. Skytech did the analysis and moved my panels accordingly, on schedule and no hassle, about 2 weeks ago. Inspite of the partial blocking of my solar panels, they are supposed to generate more electricity now than ever before, since Sungate messed up the installation. I'm waiting for my 1st PG&E statement to confirm the additional electricity to be generated. Then, I will give Skytech a 5 star rating for sure. I am happy with my new system. It's a good feeling knowing that my carbon fingerprint is quite a bit smaller now that I have six solar panels on my roof. Skytech has done a great job to accommodate my various requests. They are a personable lot. I have particularly enjoyed working with Jonathan, Joel and the young war vet (such an amazingly poised 21 year old). I can now view the performance of my panels at any interval (hour, day, month, year) online! I'm one of those who started with national company and in desperation found Skytech...thank God! From the start to the finish; the whole process took just over a month and a half. The other national company dinked around for 3 months just on the planning stage. The inverter and panels where of excellent quality and the city inspector was very pleased with their work.
