One of our 12-year old micro-inverters was no longer working. I called Hi Definition Solar who installed the system in 2014, and they explained that this was their busy season, but would send someone out asap. One of their techs was in the area and came by to install the new micro-inverter. After 3 days, It wasn't reporting production so I called Hi Def back and Jairo Aguilar, the manager, took care of it that day. I got a call from the technician and Jairo for a total of 4 times to make sure it was taken care of and working. I'm very happy with their customer service and follow-through. They totally replaced our roof in 2015 and re-sloped it with the goal of re-routing the draining water to a better location. As a custom home builder in the Bay Area, I regularly coordinate solar installations for new construction homes. Many cities now require solar systems to be installed, inspected, and signed off during rough construction, and fully completed before final inspection approval can be issued. I reached out to High Def Solar for a quote on a new construction project and scheduled a phone consultation. To help streamline the design process, I requested an email address so I could provide all the relevant project information upfront, including: * New electrical panel location and amperage * Appliance load sheets * Roof plans * Exterior elevations * Homeowner energy usage statements * Construction timeline and rough inspection schedule Instead of working collaboratively, the salesperson refused to provide an email address and stated they would only speak directly with the homeowner. Once I explained that I was the builder managing the project, I was told they did not want to discuss the system with "a construction worker" and insisted on dealing only with the client. This made absolutely no sense considering the homeowner has little to no knowledge of the construction schedule, rough inspection requirements, electrical infrastructure, or timing needed to successfully integrate solar into a new build. As the builder, coordinating these systems is literally part of my job. I've already received proposals and had productive conversations with several other solar contractors who understand how new construction projects operate and were happy to work directly with the builder to properly coordinate design, scheduling, and permitting. Unfortunately, my experience with High Def Solar was dismissive, unprofessional, and unnecessarily difficult. If you are a builder, contractor, or anyone managing a new construction project, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere. tl;dr - incompetent, unprofessional, rude; avoid at all costs. I bought a house with a two year old High Definition Solar system. A year later the whole thing failed. High Definition would not come out to fix it (at my expense) because they were "too busy" installing new systems. Phone guys were rude and dismissive and unprofessional. Here's the kicker: turns out that High Definition had overstuffed* 1/2" conduit with five hot wires, and carelessly pulled the wires such that 4" of insulation was scraped off one wire, which must have moved just enough to short out the entire system. (*Five hots in 1/2" conduit is just barely allowed by code, but two electricians told me that it's a bad idea and they would never do it, because it can cause wire damage. Especially if you pull the wires carelessly and scrape off 4" of insulation.) Summary: incompetent, unprofessional rude; avoid at all costs. read more

Took about 7-months from when I signed the agreement til the panels were up and running. Thrilled it's done and I'm sooooo happy to be paying someone other than PG&E. Using emphases batteries....refuse to give Tesla $1. Everything seems to be working perfectly. I've yet to see my first post-project PG&E bill. read more

Company was great until they weren't. I spoke with the company in early 2019 and started the process of purchasing a solar system to go on the hillside of my property. We ran into some problems and plans changed and they installed the solar panels on my roof. 24 panels paid in cash and gave them a great testimonial. In December 2023 I noticed a leak in my master bedroom, but it was minor and just put tar on it to hold into spring. On March 28, 2024, i sent an email to the company in regard to this leak in the location where the solar panels were installed, no reply back. The patch held for the rest of the year until the large storm this year and I had a water feature in my master bedroom. I again emailed the company and at least I got a call back and was told their roofer would be in contact to come out and see what could be done. Another storm past and did not hear a thing. I finally got tired of waiting and contracted a company and they came out and fixed the problem. 4 solar ankers were not sealed properly causing the wood on the roof to become damaged to the point that it had to be removed and replaced. At least now I have a new roof over my master bedroom and office. Good product, bad installers, horrible customer follow up when issues come up. read more

Hi Definition Solar (HDS) installed our roof top solar system 3 years ago. This summer I received a notification that the largest panel was not working. HDS sent out Marshall from their office to inspect and determine the issue. We have a very daunting roof; high and steep. Marshall handled it perfectly, quickly finding the problem and promised a warranty repair. Today Marshall returned as promised and spent 5 hours replacing the wiring to each panel and the junction box as well as the wiring to our Enphase box at ground level. He did this without additional help. His demeanor was professional and friendly. His obvious knowledge of the system was very reassuring. Without any qualifications I would strongly recommend HDS for solar installation. They stood behind their work and Marshall did a fantastic job in my opinion. read more

Dealing with High Definition Solar has been the worst experience in my 86 years of dealing with companies. They sold me a system that worked for 8 months until Enphase came out and changed the wiring because High Definition did not set the system correctly. In January, I notified them that I needed the system set up correctly and to make a long story short it is now June, and they will not return my calls or answered my emails. In addition, they misquoted shingling our roof. They claim to be a roofing contractor but they sub the work out. They also told me I could get a tax credit for the portion of the roof that was covered by solar panels but my CPA told me that did not exist. Now that my tar & gravel roof (which some solar companies won't go near!) is getting a bit older, I had HD Solar come over to take a look at a minor roof leak. A few weeks after I wrote that review, I received a phone call from the company and was immediately set up with someone who came out to the house to check out the Envoy device that appeared to not be working - or "dead" as someone described it on the phone in the previous conversation. The technician that came out, Guillermo, was most professional, knowledgeable, and personable. He checked out the Envoy, and found it to be not "dead" but instead working well. He attached it again, and informed me that it would catch up on the information that had been accumulating while it was unplugged, and would be in top condition in a day or so. He phoned the following day to see if it is working, and it is! Excellent service from Guillermo. He saved the reputation of his company. read more

Disclaimer: I did not go with this company. Absolutely rude. I've been called repeatedly by this company, who refuses to provide any information while insisting to come on site to do any sort of estimate. 99% of companies I talk to give estimates in a reasonable ballpark based on data and home info I provide. The third time they call, I told them to stop calling if they cannot give any info, and the representative snapped at me saying "everyone would need to come visit to give a quote" and "if you have talked to so many companies, why haven't you picked someone yet huh?". I don't want people to visit me if it's not a serious business that caters to the most basic of needs in information gathering. I'm certainly having zero interest to pick you as an installer when you can't listen to my needs. I cannot speak to their value or price obviously, but if they can't even give a ballpark number I've zero confidence the numbers are good. Everyone I've dealt with at High Definition Solar has helpful and responsive -- John, Josh, Jairo, Jake among them. (I call them the four J's). Then there is Nate, who came out to my home to actually do the work. I reserve my highest praise for Nate. Nate showed up on time, checked out my malfunctioning panels, and politely answered all my questions with patience and knowledge. Nate explained to me that the repair will require another visit due to squirrels chewing up some wiring. But having seen how responsive and professional High Definition Solar has been in all of our dealings, I'm very confident all the issues with this system will be addressed as quickly as possible to allow me to take advantage of peak solar production season. I am hesitant to recommend this company. My Enphase got disconnected last December and I first spent 2 hours twice on the phone with Enphase with no results. They recommended I call my installer, High Definition Solar. That was back in January. John told me he would put in a request but it would take up to 2 weeks before someone could come out. This went on for over 2 months which also meant no data from my solar panels. Finally I put in a complaint to the Better Business Bureau because no matter who I talked to at High Definition Solar, no one called me back or scheduled a visit like they said they would. Finally a man named Ali came out to help me. He inspected everything, talked to Enphase and got the Enphase connected. He spent 2 hours with me and I could not have asked for better service. He was professional, thorough and his communication was very clear and he was honest. He was patient with my ignorance about my solar panels and their connection to Enphase and taught me about my solar panels and their connection. I was very grateful and would highly recommend Ali's service to anyone. read more

This is the contractor people warn you about. Inflated prices, that drop almost 40% in order to tell you you're getting a good deal. Those that don't negotiate get taken for 2x the money that your system is worth. Some woman, that had no idea what she is doing, came to our house. Hokey, pressured, unbelievably unprofessional sales presentation. The thing was done from a binder with sheet protectors. Our quote was done on a piece of paper, scribbled with numbers as they dropped and then dropped the price again. After the woman left, I looked at all these reviews and noticed how bad this place really is, I can see that this sales person has been mentioned before... you think they would take these reviews to heart and get rid of someone who is clearly damaging the company's, already bad, reputation. I have spoken with the owner/ceo (whatever) more than once. This guy is shifty, slimy, and just a bad person. Its very clear who trains and hires their salespeople (as mentioned before) all sales no skills. I hope people read the reviews before being pressured into buying. read more

Quoted a solar and battery backup that was at a minimum double the price of more reputable competitors with same premium OEMs. Doesn't bother emailing the quote and just spits out a number on a piece of paper with no price breakdown or itemized list. Was shown the panel, meter, and main breaker was 200 amps already but says it still needs panel upgrade. Doesn't even bother reading the panel labelling that also says 200A. read more

Comparing to other bigger vendors, primary reason why we went with High Definition Solar is because of the micro inverter system. Although it cost a bit more because of that, we wanted a system that didn't have a single point of failure and a longer warranty. We've been really happy with the whole process. This review is for two estimates we received from different sales reps who came to our house. Sean, the first sales rep came out and gave his typical sales pitch. There are many solar companies, so it's critical to collect as much information as possible. More importantly, you should be presented with a formal summary information sheet with a breakdown of the equipment, installation, payments, cancellation policy, system warranty agreement, etc. The agreement should provide the customer with as much detailed information as possible, to avoid any hesitation or confusion about committing to a large investment of capital equipment. At the end of the first visit, we were simply presented with a single sheet of lined paper with some handwritten numbers for three different installation options. There was no breakdown of the numbers. A single piece of paper ripped off a notepad - not even a business card. We were later contacted later by High Definition Solar, and informed that if we agreed for our property to be photographed, we could get a more aggressively priced estimate. With Scott, the second sales rep came out to visit, we expressed concern about the lack of completeness and formality with the first visit. His response was along the lines of, "We're a green company..." which is ironic, because Sean left us with a piece of paper and could have easily emailed us a PDF instead. Scott left us with a revised number written on the back of his business card - that's it - and our opinion of the company was not swayed in their favor. I had them install solar panels on my home a few years ago. Several other companies that I had signed contracts with, backed out, once they learned that I have a metal tile roof. Their workmanship was first class, and everything was done on time, as scheduled. They also provided a very detailed set of plans. Best yet, when the Enphase microinverter failed twice (as happens, sometimes) they were quick to get it replaced. I would definitely recommend them. read more

Run...and don't even look back. This company is a complete joke. We should have recognized a red flag right away, as we could not get the guy who was signing us up to leave our house...but then the installation went smoothly (or so we thought) the truth is, they didn't connect us, they just installed the solar panels. How did we find this out? Two years after we had them installed, we did a home remodel. We were redoing a part of our roof and decided to contact High Definition Solar to have the panels removed so we could also do the section of roof underneath the panels. My contractor started calling them in October for removal in February. He could not get anyone to call him back. He tried for months and nothing. So finally I called the main office; the woman who answered the phone literally started screaming at me and telling me that I had no business starting a remodel on our home without first contacting them for a removal date. I tried to explain to her that this was just a small section of the roof we were wanting to redo but she just continued talking over me and screaming at me. I ended up hanging up and since we could never get a call back, we just didn't bother redoing that section of the roof. THEN, our electrician came out to do work on our electrical panel and noticed that the solar panels were not even hooked up turned on. He contacted Enphase, the online solar monitoring system and they had no record of us. After much back and forth, we finally got in touch with someone who worked tirelessly to try to figure out what happened and get us connected. She said she found out that our panels had been working, there was just a glitch in the system, and gave me a link to connect to Enphase. In the end, this was just too much trouble and their customer service is horrendous. I would definitely run away from using this company for anything. read more

I would give this company very high marks. They installed 12 panels in my house five years ago. They did a great job, and it wasn't easy because my house is all concrete with a flat concrete roof. They had to come several times and have several different inspectors look at it before we settled on a plan for installation. They called me back every year to make sure everything is fine and running well. They i've also come out to the house to make sure my monitoring system is working correctly. They sent a salesperson out and apparently she expected to close the deal in one visit. Quite aggressive. I told her we had several other proposals and that we would need some time to compare and evaluate the pros and cons of each before we could make a decision. Price is not necessarily our biggest decision factor, but they were over $10,000 higher. My wife was busy when the salesperson arrived, and so she would not start her presentation until she was able to join us half an hour later. My wife doesn't care about the details or technology. She wants me to learn about it and make the decision. This presentation consisted of flipping laminated pages in a 3 ring binder along with a canned (memorized) dialogue. She had no computer or pad, just her cell phone for reference. The proposal was finally hand written on a page torn out of a spiral notepad. No letterhead, (Her name and phone number) no company name, no date and no detail of exactly what we would be getting and when. Very professional. (NOT) I asked her if she would be sending an email with a more professional quote, and she said she would. That was a week ago and to date, it has not happened. Imagine what any future transaction with this company might be. I notice that most reviews written within the past year were mostly not good. read more

These guys are liars! We were promised to basically be paying only the SMUD infrastructure fixed charge. We just got a second SMUD bill with electric bill amounting to almost $200! Wow were we duped! Warning: HD Solar will lie to your face with big promises then provide you with equipment that does not work, does not generate enough electricity and does not come close to providing you with ample solar to cover your electricity costs. When working with the company on getting my panels up, I determined that, indeed, they were diamond level in performance. Every employee that I communicated with had customer satisfaction as a prime goal. All the company employees I saw worked well together. And the company was honest and up-front. I have had solar panels from Canada working well since 2011. Enphase that monitors my solar relayed that my panels were not communicating in July with the Gateway monitor. Once I had the right # 888-203-1855, I was able to reach Joel right away at High Definition Solar and set up an appt. to check it out while I was communicating with Enphase energy about what was happening. Nathan came out within the week and noted that my Gateway was very out of date and wasn't able to relay the info. to me. Enphase & high definition both noted that 2 of my solar panels weren't working properly and under a 25 year warranty, will need to be replaced at no charge to me. They ordered right away. I noticed that I can add battery storage to my storage panels through Enphase and High definition. Previously I had trouble getting that option with Tesla. So I'm excited to make that happen . I like that they have many experienced people working for this company. They explained that PG & E are still getting the info. from my solar panels. The Gateway is for me to monitor it and I will be getting that again soon. read more

So, this review mainly deals with just trying to set up an appointment, and if this is an indication how any more business with them(more than likely is) I would give a ZERO star. Wife made appointment for 1/14/2022 and was told someone would confirm a day before....no one did. So we called and asked what was going on and in turn the rep said it was our fault for not confirming....EXCUSE ME? NO!! You do not tell someone that someone from your company will confirm meeting and then try say it is the customer fault for not contacting you. Even with this we decided to give one more chance and had an appointment set up for 1/22/2022 at 1pm. 1/20/2022 someone called to confirm appointment and my wife missed the call. Now the reason she could not answer was because we both are RNs who work in surgery, so no you can not answer phone calls in the middle of surgery. She was able to step out, with another RN giving her a break, and called back less than 2 minutes later. Only to find out that our spot was given away. SERIOUSLY!! If someone doesn't answer your call you give away spot and you give no chance for a call back. WORST customer service ever! This is how you treat potential customers I would hate to see how you deal with existing customers or God forbid they have an issue that needs to be fixed. I only hope that you get no new customers after they read this....absolutely terrible business practice....just terrible!! No way they have BBB rating of A+. We have 30 panels installed by a High Definition Solar on our roof. The big selling point was the individual inverters used on each panel. One of the inverters has failed. En Phase was very good about getting us a new inverter. Now I am waiting for a High Definition Solar to send a repair man out to change out the inverter. One month and counting. They are more than happy to send out sales people but when it comes to service they are nowhere to be found. read more
