We have 30 panels installed by a High Definition Solar on our roof. The big selling point was the individual inverters used on each panel. One of the inverters has failed. En Phase was very good about getting us a new inverter. Now I am waiting for a High Definition Solar to send a repair man out to change out the inverter. One month and counting. They are more than happy to send out sales people but when it comes to service they are nowhere to be found. read more

High definition solar was the 3rd company I meet with for my solar consult! But the sales approach was very different than the first 2. This appointment was about 3 hrs! The sales man gave me the usual pitch abt pg&e. But the real shocker was when he started printing the contract for me to sign and enter into a contract. The difference was high definition quoted me a six panel system that would cut 1/2 my energy consumption but same price as a 15 panel system by other companies! I thought that was weird! The sales guy also told me a big LIE! He said PG&E had set net metering limits of 5% of customers! And that 4% had already signed up as of two weeks ago. So we shd sign up immediately, but I checked this and the 5% cap has been reached as of dec 2016! The contract had a arbitration agreement, as a businessman this is always a red flag to me! Basically this sort of agreement favors the company as they have lots of money, and a normal person cannot afford to litigate against high def solar! Updating my review here. Originally we were very satisfied with the customer service, but in the past year, there seems to have been quite a bit of turnover in the installation and service personnel. Cody, who was great, took over our project and then left himself. We were promised installation of consumption monitors by the salesperson, and have been told for almost a year now that someone would contact us to install. It should be an easy install, but follow-up has been very difficult. We have talked to various people at the firm, including the new head of customer service, and each time, we have to start over. Sorry to say, going to revise my original rating from 5-stars down to 2-stars until they become more organized and responsive to their customers. read more

This company is awesome! From start to finish, my project was handled by true professionals who are experts at their craft and everything was installed to the exact specifications. The project handlers, installers and associated staff were incredibly responsive and receptive to all my needs and requests. They worked with me throughout the entire process and gave me excellent advice. High Definition overall is highly recommended. The initial consultant came out to our house and could calculate the right amount of panels we needed for the amount of energy we use. And he was correct, now our PGE bill is $0! The only hitch in the step was with inspection. There was a lack of communication with this part of the office; I had to call the office to ask about this schedule because they didn't call us to let us know. Fortunately, April, the admin assistant, assisted us seamlessly with our PGE application and was the go between so we didn't have to deal with PGE. As soon as she submitted our paperwork our solar was turned on. We are very happy to now own our solar panels and we have not paid PGE for the last months! read more

Horribly over priced solar system company. Two sales reps visited me on different days after I didn't fall for sales tactics of the first. First sales rep mentions, how you can't be sure other solar companies will stay in business but they will and all certifications and BBB reviews but failed to mention their incredibly low Yelp reviews. Without even looking at my energy usage to figure out system size he started off with average solar system price of $60,000 then worked his way down to about $37,800 for 3.6kW system. That's more expensive than SolarCity who's given me similar quote for 6.5kW system!. At the end of the "impressive presentation" he asked for promo code that their office scheduling person given me day prior PHP28 $8,291 off. Then went on saying how great and unique promo code is and it's not frequently given out to customers so I should feel special. In addition I was given "initial visit" $4,309 visit discount that was only valid the day of the visit, nice sales pressure tactic! After 30% tax rebate, two "generous" promotions I was presented the system totaled around $17,500 for 3.6kW. This is after 3 Tax credits based on his calculations LoL! What a joke. See attached picture below. I was also told the LG panels I was offered are premium but after some research turns out they are standard and lose efficency around %20. That day I did not agree to proceed with anything, shortly I was contacted by high definition office scheduling person and asked about my experience with Jose. I said I wasn't impressed with the price of the system so she went ahead and scheduled me with "commercial" sales rep who can cut me much better deal because he deals with commercial work in the area, and said he wouldn't do an hour long presentation but would have a much better price. Guess what I was told again why I should chose them over another solar company and that he's got these commercial panels that are two steps above residental panels. And said that they move quick and probably will be gone in 2 days so I must act fast to get a great deal. This commercial sales rep started with system price of $32,000 and worked his way down to about $14,900 for same exact system the guy day before wanted $17,500. When I asked "commercial" sales rep about where he get $32,000 price figure from he was not able to give me straight answer after long minute of pondering. Then proceeded to say that most of their business is in Bay Area where homes are worth more and people have more cash. People don't fall for sales pressure of this company or anything they say, with basic math you can quickly calculate how much in materials your solar system will cost. Bulk of the cost is in the panels, micro inverters or string inverters and inverter optimizer and DC to AC converter. Premium Panasonic 320watt panels with efficiency of 21% cost around $360 per panel. That's $4,680 for panels, micro inverters are around $170, you need 13, that's $2,210. DC to AC inverter is around $1000 and rack mounting system around $1000, plus permit from city $304, and cables another $100. Grand total of $9,294 for 4.3 kW system and quality solar system, Now subtract %30 tax credit in California so the system now costing you around $6k if you can install yourself. Now you are looking at 4yrs time frame to break even on the system cost and at 5th year you are putting money in your pocket! read more

The Project Manager Jason kept me informed every step of the way and the Project supervisor Mark really made me understand the process and made it look so easy. I had not set aside that much time so sent them away after an hour with a request for a quote by email. They subsequently followed up by phone two times. They asked me to allow them to send a new representative out, but refused to make an appointment unless my spouse was also available. Predatory sales behavior exhibited by High Definition Solar. My 88 year-old stepfather and 89 year-old mother were sold a solar panel system in 2020 for $13,750 (Riverbank, CA). It is wholly unfeasible that the panels made sense for their situation. A full explanation of the payback of the system, the monthly savings, etc., were lost on my stepfather--he cannot explain to me now what he is gaining by having had the system installed. Unfortunately, given their nearest relative, me, lives a 90 minute drive away, no one had any idea of the proposal until after the panels had already been installed. High Definition Solar could have made the proposal and suggested to them that they review it with someone before signing. But they would have lost the sale as there is no way that the deal was a good one for them--absolutely no way. read more

High Definition Solar did a stellar job on our solar panels. The guys who first came to our house were polite and respectful of our time. There was no pressure to make an appointment. We have wanted Solar for quit a while and had one company come out, take up about an hour of our evening only to find out that they couldn't place panels on our concrete roof tiles. For an additional $ 5K, they would replace part of the roof and then install solar panels. We cancelled that contract. HDS said the existing roof posed no problem. Within about 2 weeks, the project was done. There were 2 minor cracks in the roof tiles that were corrected the next day. Their workers were polite. The area was cleaned up. We are extremely happy. My only negative comment is that the sales person (not the door-to-door guys) did sort of go off on a tangent. He said he wanted to make sure we understood everything about the contract and work, so maybe that explains his lengthy sales pitch. He was at our home about 1.5 hrs. read more

I can't comment on the quality of their systems, since I didn't have them install one, but I can say their sales process leaves much to be desired. Their sales rep wasn't rude or pushy or anything (unlike some of the other reviews I've read here), but he just wasn't very knowledgeable about solar. For example: * He showed me some figures on how a solar system has positive ROI, and in the process made the claim that the value of the home with solar appreciated over time, such that if I install a $30k system today, in 20 years my home will be worth $100k more! When I asked him how a house with a $30k solar system can be worth $100k more than the same house without the system plus $30k cash to install it, he couldn't give me any kind of answer that made sense. He did continue to reference that number as he continued his presentation, though. * He couldn't explain to me how net metering works on time-of-use plans, at least not in a way that I could understand. That might be on me. * He was *very* thorough in his description of their BBB, Diamond Certified, insurance, etc., but when it came to actual questions about the system they were going to install, I couldn't get much info except "our quality is so much better than the other guys!" The next day, I got an emailed quote from his personal Gmail, with his personal signature promoting a book he has written. I'm sure that was an honest mistake, but it's definitely not a confidence builder. I would expect my personal information to be stored securely, not in someone's personal Gmail account. And to put the nail in the coffin, their quote was almost 50% higher than the quote I got from Tesla/SolarCity. read more

Customer service at Hi-definition solar sucks, they do not return phone call or when they you they tell you they will get right on it (Ian) and that never happens of if they do send someone out it is the next time they have a crew in the area? I have had a issue with see all of my panel on Enphase  I sent Ian a email from Enphase  showing him how to fix the problem and still has not fixed it yet that was 2 weeks ago. Now when I call Ian's cell phone it a new person message I get and I have left 2 messages for him -no return call of course. read more

There are pros and cons to High Definition, but saddest part of our experience was the Owner/CEO of High Definition, Tim Netherton. The salesman was great, but ended up leaving High Definition before our project even started. We struggled a bit with getting the plans from HD. Since we have HOA with a Design Review Committee, we needed the plans ahead of time for approval. Finally got that taken care, however communication was not great and getting the project install date took time again, but after a few nagging calls, we got it scheduled. During this time is when I found out that our sales rep was no longer there, but he provided the name and number of the CEO for me to get some support. I texted Tim, with no response, however, I did get a call from the project manager. I confirmed with him that he was finally calling because I had contacted the CEO. After the install, our HOA did their inspection, only to find that the installers deviated from the plan. There was conduit on the roof, which was not part of the plan and not allowed by our HOA. The project manager was defensive when I provided the information from the HOA. I again texted the CEO as I was worried that the project manager was not taking the HOA seriously. No response from Tim again. The HOA Design Review Team sent a response that the explanation from the project manager was not acceptable and a solution would be necessary. I now have conduit on my roof that our HOA won't allow and I don't know what roof repairs will be needed to fix this as the conduit does go through the roof into the attic. I text the CEO again asking for a response. The response I get from the CEO's number is "you have the wrong number, stop texting". I double check the number, then do a reverse lookup and confirm that the number did in fact belong to Tim Netherton, owner of High Definition Solar. When I ask if that was true, I get blasted that this was a personal number and don't text again. I then reply stating that if I had received a response from my first message with the work number I should use, I would have been happy to use it, but spending $20k on this project, I was looking to speak to the CEO. The response was, "I don't care how much you spent". So the CEO refused to respond to my text messages, didn't bother to provide a different number for me to use to reach him, and whoever was responding, doesn't care how much I spent or what my problems are. This is a CEO that makes a ton of money, but doesn't back up his service, his team, or care about his customers. I am hoping the project manager cares more than that and we get this resolved. Until then, the HOA is holding our project deposit and if it is not resolved, may start charging us fines. read more

The quality of roofing and solar work was top-notch, and overall a good experience. The tradesmen were clearly very experienced, efficient, and pleasant. All of the teams were willing to work with project changes and unique needs. The project-management left a bit to be desired as schedules slipped a few times. I have my solar system installed by High Definition Solar about ten years now. I have a problem with the Enphase Envoy Monitor suddenly stop reporting. I contact High Definition Solar and they dispatch Jesse the next day. It took two days and multiple attempts to troubleshoot the problem but we get it resolved. Beware of dealing with this company. We dealt with them back in 2016 and had panels installed but have never been happy with the panels. The panels are just decoration as far as we're concerned. It was a waste of time, energy and money to which we're not saving. A salesman by the name of Gary who no longer works for the company sold us 6 panels to which he claimed at the time would save us on half our PG&E bill. So since that was the case we added a 7th panel just to save a bit more. Prior to the install the next day a guy came and knocked on our door and stated we were paying too much for the panels we were going to receive. We thought he was just someone trying to get us to go his way so we did not listen. Boy, do we wish we had listen to him. He was right we did pay way too much for the lousy 7 panels we had installed. We financed the panels and for a whole year waited for a bill to be sent to us to make monthly payments but we never received a bill. At the end of the year we received our property taxes just to find out that the cost of the solar panels for the entire year had been placed on our taxes. We were told we would receive a monthly bill by Gary and we had no idea that the cost would be added to our taxes. We could have lost our home due to our property tax bill which doubled. Plus our true-up bill a year is very costly we're not saving at all on our PG&E bill. We ended up losing money all the way around. Thanks to our broker he was able to get us refinanced to pay off those worthless solar panels. So 2019, I received a call from High Definition Solar regarding our meter reading. I expressed to the person that we were not happy with the panels nor the company and that we should have never accepted their service but they were recommended by a co-worker. The individual said they could send out a person by the name of Jose to see what they could do to better serve us. Well to make a long story short he offered for us to buy more panels. Can you believe that!!!! After we expressed to him that we were not happy with what we had. Wow!!! You would think that they would be willing to make things right with us being that their ex- employee Gary short sold us on panels from the beginning. We refused to purchase more panels. It was not our fault that Gary did not know how to sell the right amount of panels for a 2 story home. Jose said he would have Dan the Customer Relationship Manager contact us the following week. Dan never called. My husband called Jose twice to let him know we have yet to be contacted by Dan and said we will be placing a not so good review on Yelp. Then guess what? Dan called and stated did we have a question about our panels. I was like "NO" was not the story told to you of why you should be contacting us. I then had to reiterate the entire story to him. Wow these people!!!! Dan said he would pull our file from 2016 and would call me back on Monday or Tuesday of next week after he reviewed our file. Never heard back from him!!! I called and left a message on his voice mail stating that I was yet awaiting his call back. He finally called and some what apologized for not calling me back. He stated he dropped the ball!!! In closing, Dan stated he would place our file on the Vice President's desk and that is where it ended. We're not holding our breath to hear from him. The process went very smoothly from start to finish. We contacted the company in early April and they were able to secure the necessary permits through Santa Clara County in a reasonable time frame. The installation took place in the timeline we discussed and they were done in less than one day. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THES PEOPLE! LAWSUIT WAITING TO HAPPEN! IGNORE DIAMOND CERTIFICATION. These people did a pre-inspection of my home and did not tell me that my roof needed to be replaced. They only told me to cut a tree back to get the best sun. Here's the horrible result. I put my home up for sale less than 6 months later. The inspection report came back that my roof needed to be replaced and the worst part of the roof on the report happens to be where the panels were put on. There are moisture issues that put my home at risk for fungus problems. I was told by three roofing specialists that they absolutely should have informed me of the poor condition of my roof before I agreed to have panels installed. The roof should have been the first priority. The likelihood of these people damaging my roof upon installation is also high. This entire situation has marginalized the sale of my home (new owners potentially taking on a huge problem that I would not have known about unless there were an inspection - if this had gone unnoticed, the gradual damage to my home could be greater than it is right now). Either way, I'm losing at least $20,000 as a result of an investment that should have saved me money. They also told me that solar installments appreciate near entire investment cost. Wrong. Very untrue. Finally, the unprofessionalism of the Operations Manager, Janae, was shocking. She was condescending, dishonest (she told me that the roof was fine because the city signed off, but this means nothing as far as whether or not damage is done to your home upon installation and they weren't inspecting the roof). She did not respond promptly and when I called her to inform her of an email I sent letting her know about the recommendations of attorneys and roofers - a time sensitive email that would impact the sale of my home, she was resistant, defensive, and tried to turn the situation around onto me. I was flabbergasted. In addition, they require you to sign an arbitration agreement. NEVER DO THIS, EVER!!!!! Attorney's an business owners know damn well that this only serves them. You will spend more on time and money for an attorney who will go to bat for you in arbitration than is worth it. You lose a lot in that process. It places you in a catch 22 situation in which it's better to take the entire loss. In other words, arbitration agreements only protect the business owner, not the consumer. It's a cost benefit analysis that's nearly always in their favor. These people are totally unprofessional scam artists. Do not so business with them. They're absolutely horrible. read more

Seems like the reviews for this company are all over the map, good and bad. So I'm going to document everything about our personal experience and you can compare/contrast with others' experiences: - Door to door salesman: We didn't hear about HD Solar this way, so I can't comment on their door-to-door tactics specifically. They were recommended by a different energy company, and we contacted them. However, over the past year we have been in contact with several different solar panel companies by door-to-door salesman and in-store salesman. Like all the other comments here, all my experiences have been with pushy salesman. I'm just going to assume that HD Solar door-to-door salesman might be similar, but that's just my experience with door-to-door people. (Literally had someone a few months ago try to sell me freeze dried salmon, with said salmon in hand. Yeah, all door-to-door people are pushy.) - In-house salesman: Friendly, informative. This was an approximately one hour presentation about solar and energy in general, the company, the installers, etc. Some people on yelp are saying that their salesman used scare tactics to drive the sale. Guess what? Just because a salesman says something scary in their presentation, doesn't make it not true. Among the "scary" things our salesman said were: energy prices continue to rise, government rebates may not last forever, we could get a better price if we signed on the same day. All those things are undeniably true. Energy prices always rise. Government rebates don't last forever. You can always negotiate a better price by paying cash and paying now. Of course, lots of other things were discussed and all of it was useful. The salesman never dodged a question. - Project manager: Friendly, good communication, and good coordination. Within a week of the signed documents, we were contacted by the project manager. He was the one surveying our roof, designing the layout, and coordinating with the team of installers. He called us, emailed us, and texted us so that we were always in the loop. He gave us options when necessary, and in the end helped us get the layout that worked best for us. By the way, the layout does not just include the panels. The panels need to tie into the electric box, so there are pipes, wires, boxes, etc. that need to go somewhere. This was all part of his explanation and we could tell he was trying to make things look good with the layout of our house. - Installers: Good. Ok, that's not very descriptive, but I'm not sure what else to say here. They showed up on time, were friendly, finished on time, and cleaned up after themselves. There wasn't much contact other than that, but there also wasn't a need for it. In the past, I've had lots of contractors leave a mess. The HD Solar installers left with no sign that they were there in the first place. (Except for the panels. Those are still here, thank goodness.) - Inspector: Friendly. A few days after the installation an HD Solar inspector showed up to coordinate an inspection with the county inspector. The inspection passed, and everyone was happy. - Post-installation Follow Up: Friendly, informative. A week after the inspection we coordinated a time with an HD Solar customer service representative. He came to our house and showed us how to track our solar usage, explained some information about our gas/electric bill, and asked us about our experience with their company. He was super friendly, and I honestly couldn't think of anything negative about any of our interactions with them. So, overall I feel that HD Solar was a great company to work with. We are very happy with our panels and the price we paid for them. read more

I am amazed with the level of engagement right from initial meeting with the sales person to the last stage of feedback. Even though my solar panel project budget was a small one, I was given all the information I needed right from financing options to the panel operation and PGE electric bill. The initial quote was to get to have 13 panels on my roof. The engineer who visited my home to inspect the roof was honest and explained that for maximum efficiency 6 to 7 panels would be enough. The installers took an appointment for 2 days and did not bother me during the installation. Then they insisted on getting "my husband's name and information" because, you know, I am a woman and all. I told them I had a wife, which happens to be the case. And that I've owned the building myself for 30 years, not my wife. They refused to do the bid, unless my husband, umm er, my wife was present at the time. Even though I own the building myself, not my wife, really? I asked--and they asked if I was sure my husband wasn't available! Oh my goodness. In San Francisco I have to hear this. Oy vey. The poor kid kept pressing me on this, and I found it so offensive--not sure it was discriminatory, but it sure was stupid and ignorant--that it made me know that I don't want this company coming NEAR my Victorian. Have a nice day, dumbbells.... Frankly, I feel sorry for them at this point. Coming door to door, like it's the 1930s... And their guy clearly knew nothing....
