This was my first time returning to Skipjack in 10 years. It's a good sign that it must be doing well if it's still here. We wanted to sit at the bar, which was pretty crowded, but we were able to get seats. Shelby, the bartender, was friendly, and we started with crispy Brussels sprouts, which were tasty with a chipotle dipping sauce. We also ordered the pork tenderloin and a grouper special served on grilled watermelon, which of course, I had to try. The food was creative, original, and delicious. My husband and I met another couple for dinner. It was the first time there for all of us. I had a grilled veggie sandwich with melted brie and a side of sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries was the highlight of the meal for me. The sandwich was so so. My husband ordered the crabcake that was served on a bed of rice. The crab cake was delicious, but it seemed a little odd to serve it on rice. The other couple seemed to be happy with their meals. One ordered a steak and the other the beef bourguignon. We noticed they have a happy hour menu. I would definitely go back to try that. The service was great and the ambience was very nice. We celebrated my brother's 70th birthday last night at Skipjack. We were a party of 12 and they were extremely accommodating. We brought a cake with us because my brother loves Costco's two layer chocolate cake. They told us there was a $2.00 per person cake cutting fee, so just be aware of that. We started our dinner with the roasted Brussel sprouts as an appetizer and everyone really liked them. I ordered the Herman's burger with tater tots. I ordered it medium rare and it came out medium. They also forgot to put the caramelized onions on the top but they did bring some out for the burgers that were missing the onions. Even though it was more well done than I like, it was still a delicious burger. The onions took it over the top so I'm glad they brought them out to add. My husband had the spicy Herman's burger which is served with toasted jalapeños on top and a side salad. Again, his burger was over cooked but he said very tasty. My cousin got the mahi mahi club sandwich and she said it was delicious and the fish was cooked perfectly. In the end, because of some of the mistakes they made and not all burgers came out together, they waved the cake cutting fee! read more

Absolutely fantastic! This restaurant is a hidden gem. We make a point to eat here anytime we visit from Pittsburgh. Everything is fresh and well though out. The menu is unique and bursting with flavor. Everyone is always so friendly. I highly recommend anything that is a beef product. As they get their beef from a great local butcher, Herman's Meats. They also always have a nice selection of fresh seafood. And their desserts are to die for. If you are anywhere near Skips, make a point to stop in for a meal. read more

Skipjack is about a 10 minute drive from UD's campus in a very nice shopping center in a residential area. The inside is very clean, simple with white table cloths. Our server Riley was so nice and helpful. Our meals were delicious and well presented with interesting combinations of ingredients. I booked a party here and was unable to reach the event planner. I wasn't even sure she has booked the party until another staff member saw it on the calendar (not the time I requested, however). After that I called multiple times and she did not return my calls and, though she did return a few of my emails, she gave me minimal answers. My son wanted his party here but with this lousy communication I won't chance the event being ruined or not planned at all. I order a cheesesteak, and when it was delivered the steak was small and the meat was strange looking not resembling any steak I have ever seen. Hubby and I spent some time at White Clay Creek and decided to grab a bite before heading home. We arrived well after the lunch crowd and before dinnertime so the place was pretty empty. The service was immediate and provided with a smile and pleasantries. Our food arrived quickly and was terrific. I had the filet cheese steak (what a treat!) and hubby had the Beast Burger. He told his buddies it was the best burger he has had in DE. The portions were generous and we both took half of our food home and warmed up for dinner. Since we had been to Skips a few times, we decided to invite our friends. Unfortunately, the food was terrible this time. The soup of the day was crab corn chowder. When it came, to our surprise, it was a spicy red broth and not a white chowder. It was barely hot and contained only a few things in the broth. No corn (?), a few potato pieces, and one piece of crab. It was very spicy and fishy tasting. Not good at all. The pear, walnut salad contained two pieces of pear, couldn't taste the dressing at all, the walnuts were soggy. The added chicken looked to be boiled. No color, no flavor or seasoning. Completely tasteless. The crab cake had no sides, but a small crab cake that sat in the middle of the plate on rice pilaf. It was a very expensive meal and highly disappointing. We do not plan on going back to this restaurant. read more

Food looked nice, but came out overcooked ( fish was mushy overcooked, the shrimp papparadella was barely lukewarm and noodles so overcooked they fell apart, as examples).... Service was slow with almost no one in the restaurant. We waited long time for forks for dessert ( ultimately just taking them off a different table). And there was some drama of yelling across the restaurant between staff members that was just sad. Felt like our table - booked for a special celebration - was an afterthought. *Hidden Gem Alert* Guys, after the longest weekend ever, we decided to find a nice place for early dinner. Low and behold we found this establishment in a shopping area off route 2 or something like that in Newark. Boy were we shocked! It clean, It's cozy, The staff are mega friendly. Ample parking. The food dare I say...took the cake. I would drive the 45 minutes to eat this quality of food everyday if I could. The pictures coming speak for themselves. Everything was spot on, Hot and flavorful. My best friend has a shellfish allergy and even she willing to risk it all to try the crab cakes. On an even nicer note, I have been making it a personal mission to thank staff whenever someone stands out for more than they actually have to do. Jeff our server was a sheer delight. He accommodated every single thing we needed. Including my sister asking questions like "does the chicken sandwich come on a bun made of bread?"- she's a true gen x'er. This guy put up with 8 to 10 drink orders. 5-6 appetizers, 4 meals ( there was a group of us after I got my tattoo) and dessert. He didn't skip a beat. They seem to be able to cater to large crowds, bar related events and cozy dining. Excellent place for date night too. My dad and I went there for dinner Tuesday night. This is the second time I've been to this restaurant and the second time it was a really nice experience. They have altered the indoor seating to comply with the current restrictions, so the tables are spaced out. The menu offered pub style fare and entrees that had meat, fish and vegetarian options. They offer a nice cocktail menu along with many wine and beer options. My dad got a salad appetizer and an entree of a lobster tail with rice. I went with the crab cakes that came with Old Bay seasoned fries and an arugula salad. Overall our food was really good. The crab cakes were seasoned really nice as were the fries. Both were very tasty. They also offer a lunch and brunch menu on the weekends and have daily specials. Definitely check them out. read more

Getting takeout at Skipjack restaurant is rarely easy. It is not a welcoming place to go and retrieve your food. In order to retrieve food that occurs at the bat. For as small as the bar is, it is loud. The times ive been there the transaction happens where any pickup of food is accomplished by having a bag of food handed to you over the bar itself, usually between people sitting at the bar. It is awkward and weird.. if you need to speak with the person handing you the food, the only way to be heard is to speak very loudly and the employee has to speak loudly as well. The ambiance at the bar is primarily for its patrons, who clearly are enjoying themselves, know one another, and it comes off as a private club. The food is quite good, but as i say here, it was very awkward attempting to interact with the employee. I called in my order, described my order, repeated it, and when i arrived at the restaurant, the order delivered over the bar was incomplete. read more

My third and final try with this place. They always seem confused about seating reservations. Staff is always shirt staffed and stress. This time they had a whole year to plan Mother's day. My new husband and I celebrated our marriage with my family in Delaware and this place was recommended. First off, a big shoutout to Kim for coordinating everything with me for a few weeks. The general manager as well (I forgot her name, sorry!) were so accompanying. They let us borrow a vase for roses, let us borrow a table for our cake and presents and treated us so well for this special occasion. The food was so good. Freaking great food!. Went to pick my son from UD and before coming back to NYC we decide to have lunch. After reading few reviews about this restaurant we went to check it out. We got the Cajun Shrimp wrap, Crispy Buttermilk Chicken sandwich and the Filet Tip Cheesesteak. Everything was delicious... 10 of 10 on taste! Hands down the best food I ate around Newark DE. I found this on Yelp and then confirmed it as "Places we love about Delaware" on Delaware Today. I specifically went for the lobster grilled cheese and a 90 minute DFH. I am delighted I did! My husband enjoyed the crab cake and fries with herbs and cheese. So good! This is perfect for a night out with family, friends or a spouse. Service generally takes a little while. Ambiance is nice, but the power kept going out. It appears to be a seafood restaurant with a lot sea type artifacts inside, but they seem to offer more land items than seafood items. The chef must also smoke 2 packs a day, all the food was salty. Ham and cheese brie appetizer has no brie in it, but loads of salt. The restaurant is an eclectic mix and seems to miss the mark on a consistent seafood theme which is a shame since there doesnt seem to be a single decent seafood joint anywhere near by. read more

They put us in the back part of the building. We were NOT allowed to order off of the special priced lunch menu because we were in the "party" room. We had to order off of the full price menu. We were notified that there were no hamburgers today. When I ordered a mushroom cheese steak I was notified there was no meat in the sandwich. After an hour wait, when we were finally being served, I was told there were no mushrooms, so I had to order something else. Refills of our drinks were also slow. Took a colleague of mine from Germany. We were celebrating his retirement. No reservation and we were seated immediately. Waitress was very pleasant, knowledgeable and gave us excellent guidance. The Victory dark beer was excellent. My Sole dish with rice was amazing. My colleague said his salmon was some of the best he's ever had in the US. We were still a bit hungry so I had the creme brulee and he had berries. I'll definitely be back. Only irritating aspect was the noise level was high in the beginning. I try to avoid giving 5 star reviews based on one visit. However, having been in a lot of good eateries over the years, you pick up a vibe that speaks to you. That's what I experienced at Skipjack. The owner, Donny, greeted me at their meeting room and could not have been more helpful. I was asked to give a talk on photography by the local car club and he set up the TV screens and my laptop with practiced expertise. He suggested I grab a snack at the bar as dinner was a couple of hours away. Their $5 bar menu had tempting small plates - the chicken wings got the nod. OMG, They were top 5 in my eating history! A free diet soda came with my order - cool. Dinner was ala carte - I had crab bisque for the soup course and found it rich, flavorful and full of juicy crab meat swimming in a well seasoned broth. Really a treat and highly recommended. My main meal was a crab cake, but not a Maryland crab cake, it's a Skipjack crab cake. They don't use mayo to bind things. Instead, they use a shrimp and lobster mousse that imparts a subtle, complex taste. I loved it. My crab cake sat on a bed of wild rice next to a tomato purée and a small pile of grilled squash. Every bite was a taste treat. Great service. Professionally run all the way around. Food that demonstrates what can happen when a chef explores unique ideas on fresh local ingredients.
