Spicy Herman's burger
Nancy S.

We celebrated my brother's 70th birthday last night at Skipjack. We were a party of 12 and they were extremely accommodating. We brought a cake with us because my brother loves Costco's two layer chocolate cake. They told us there was a $2.00 per person cake cutting fee, so just be aware of that. We started our dinner with the roasted Brussel sprouts as an appetizer and everyone really liked them. I ordered the Herman's burger with tater tots. I ordered it medium rare and it came out medium. They also forgot to put the caramelized onions on the top but they did bring some out for the burgers that were missing the onions. Even though it was more well done than I like, it was still a delicious burger. The onions took it over the top so I'm glad they brought them out to add. My husband had the spicy Herman's burger which is served with toasted jalapeños on top and a side salad. Again, his burger was over cooked but he said very tasty. My cousin got the mahi mahi club sandwich and she said it was delicious and the fish was cooked perfectly. In the end, because of some of the mistakes they made and not all burgers came out together, they waved the cake cutting fee!

Absolutely fantastic! This restaurant is a hidden gem. We make a point to eat here anytime we visit from Pittsburgh. Everything is fresh and well though out. The menu is unique and bursting with flavor. Everyone is always so friendly. I highly recommend anything that is a beef product. As they get their beef from a great local butcher, Herman's Meats. They also always have a nice selection of fresh seafood. And their desserts are to die for. If you are anywhere near Skips, make a point to stop in for a meal.

Skipjack is about a 10 minute drive from UD's campus in a very nice shopping center in a residential area. The inside is very clean, simple with white table cloths. Our server Riley was so nice and helpful. Our meals were delicious and well presented with interesting combinations of ingredients. A nice dining experience (they even had a keyboard player) !

Hubby and I spent some time at White Clay Creek and decided to grab a bite before heading home. We arrived well after the lunch crowd and before dinnertime so the place was pretty empty. The service was immediate and provided with a smile and pleasantries. Our food arrived quickly and was terrific. I had the filet cheese steak (what a treat!) and hubby had the Beast Burger. He told his buddies it was the best burger he has had in DE. The portions were generous and we both took half of our food home and warmed up for dinner. Look forward to another time...maybe dinner!

*Hidden Gem Alert* Guys, after the longest weekend ever, we decided to find a nice place for early dinner. Low and behold we found this establishment in a shopping area off route 2 or something like that in Newark. Boy were we shocked! It clean, It's cozy, The staff are mega friendly. Ample parking. The food dare I say...took the cake. I would drive the 45 minutes to eat this quality of food everyday if I could. The pictures coming speak for themselves. Everything was spot on, Hot and flavorful. My best friend has a shellfish allergy and even she willing to risk it all to try the crab cakes. On an even nicer note, I have been making it a personal mission to thank staff whenever someone stands out for more than they actually have to do. Jeff our server was a sheer delight. He accommodated every single thing we needed. Including my sister asking questions like "does the chicken sandwich come on a bun made of bread?"- she's a true gen x'er. This guy put up with 8 to 10 drink orders. 5-6 appetizers, 4 meals ( there was a group of us after I got my tattoo) and dessert. He didn't skip a beat. They seem to be able to cater to large crowds, bar related events and cozy dining. Excellent place for date night too. I would recommend this place highly because I just don't see a bad thing about it.

Mahi mahi with asparagus capers and imperial crab cream sauce

So good! Only problem was very slow service. Food was amazing and I'd definitely be back if I'm down in this area again.

The crab cake and lobster bisque was excellent. Service at the bar was great. The ambiance was very "local cozy".

Pretty good food. They try hard and even opened an outdoor space. Old school place and not modern. But I like going here.

Also, if you've read my prior reviews, you know I always want my water glass filled and the waiter made sure that was the case. It's a small detail that added to the overall comfort of the meal. The ambiance of the restaurant was warm and inviting, creating a relaxed setting for dinner. The food was well-prepared and flavorful. The veal meatballs were tender, the olive oil and sun-dried tomato dip for the bread was unique and yummy, and the mushroom agnolotti stood out as especially delicious. In fact, I can't wait to go back and have it again. Also, since it was Valentines weekend they added a cute little lips design on top of my drink. Another memorable touch was the mini firework placed on the butterscotch custard to celebrate my birthday. It added a bit of fun to the end of the meal and made the occasion feel special. My partner had the cannoli for dessert and it was definitely enough for two! Overall, Taverna delivered a very enjoyable dining experience, and I would be happy to return.

They sell a lot of their own merch so that's what you first see when you walk in. They have a bar area as well. The dining area towards the back is very spacious. And they have seating to accommodate small-large groups. The dim lighting adds to the calm vibe of the restaurant. The service is so fast. I feel like every item came out so quickly. And the servers checked in pretty frequently to clear the table, ask you if you need another drink, dessert, etc. it did feel a bit rushed. As a starter they give you their Ciabatta bread and the sun-dried tomato oil. The oil was DELICIOUS. I literally bought a jar to take home. For my drink I got the Fresca. It was good, very refreshing. For my entree I got the Linguini & Clams. It was good, could've used a bit more salt but the sauce was good. For desert I got the boozy affogato and it was delish. Would definitely dine here again if I'm ever in the area.

I enjoyed the bacon and cheese potato kegs. My wife and I split the BLT and grilled cheese. Hers came with a side salad mine with shoe string fries. My son has the salad. Salmon was very good, it was vodka cured; bloodline and skin removed (+++)! Grain was pretty busy for mid-afternoon on a Sunday. Modern pub/ sports pub feel. Phillies game on the TVs. Music playing. Service was OK. My one pet peeve is allowing servers to leave dirty dishes and empty glasses on the table. And our server, although attentive, did not clear any dishes or glasses. Thank god I don't have epilepsy, the light over our table kept blinking non-stop. Plenty of off street parking for patrons. Lots of varied seating, both indoor and outdoor. See warning sign in my pics (haha). As far as prices, they are in line with any other places, as far as these other reviews that said it is excessively expensive, not true. Lunches are $15-20. Apps are a little pricey. Nice beer selection in the $8 ish range. Forgot I wanted to get a pan dessert, next time. I paid using InKind and got a nice discount.

Not surprising, as on holiday weekends most students go home so the town isn't crowded like a usual week. Service was friendly, fast and attentive. Everyone's meals were very good, except for mine. I made a bad choice. Skip the hot honey chicken over donuts brunch item. Its nothing more than 3 chicken fingers over what tasted like a couple of dry entemann's donuts. (Missed opportunity..theres a greta bakery across the street..should get fresh glazed donuts from them. The donuts ruined the dish. Other meals were very good. Easter quiche special with hollandaise sauce and fried potatoes was delicious, although the size of quiche slices was kind of small. Burrata avocado toast was great, and so was their cheese omelette. It was perfect dining for us as we didn't want a heavy, upscale meal at 1:30 in the afternoon. Will definitely come back next time we are in town for dinner and drinks.
