Well first starters we arrived at 11:55 am knowing you opened at 12:00 and the hostess unlocked the door when we were standing there (it was cold out) and didn't open the door for us, because of previous hernia surgery I am not comfortable sitting in a booth and I asked if we could sit at a table,I was informed that the tables were for larger parties, we were the only customers there,we sat at a table anyway. The waitress was great. The crab bisque was watery, I order a cheeseburger to take home for dinner it had provolen cheese and bacon and had no flavor to it. beautiful decor but what good is that. read more

The bar area is close to the weekend music but if you prefer a quiet experience you can sit on the other side of the restaurant. Turkey platter is " spot on " I order mash potatoes, which IMO are also excellent, The restaurant interior is a nice design. There is a bar , and stage on one side with music on the weekends , and a quiet dining room on the other end. Prices are reasonable , the staff is customer friendly. My wife and I have been to Baker's Restaurant several times and we have not been disappointed. This time we got seafood dishes. The crab bisque was excellent and the Chesapeake style Haddock with green beans was delicious to the last taste. My wife enjoyed her crab imperial dish and we both enjoyed the Whiskey bread pudding. Been our "go to" for 50 years and always had great food at great prices . Times have changed and so has Bakers ! My normal favorite , ground sirloin w onions and mashed was always a chargrilled nice sized oval piece of beef about an inch and a half thick . Now it's a small frozen hamburger size and is nowhere near as good as it was ...ordered the rib steak instead .. it was a small oval and literally 1/8th of an inch thick .. terrible .. friends got shrimp and they were flat (frozen) and tasteless ... another got oysters which were also flat ( frozen) and dry from being overcooked .. wife got special beef stew which has a dribble of beef and veggies covered with a ton of mashed potatoes .. same for the shepherds pie ... nothing but mashed potatoes . So sad that this once great restaurant has fallen so far so fast . Our group of 8-12 have been going there forever and after last night decided that it was our last trip . We all understand that costs have gone up .. and Bakers prices have risen substantially too which is fine AS LONG AS YOU CONTINUE TO OFFER THE SAME QUALITY FOOD THAT YOUR LONGTIME CUSTOMERS HAVE GROWN TO EXPECT ! Have been regulars here for many years. Menu has been fairly static with tried & true options and daily featured specials. Cuisine is diverse, fairly basic, but always fresh, served hot as needed and portions won't leave you hungry. Service is predictably reliable with a fairly stable staff. Seating is comfortable with good acoustics. Burgers are excellent and Friday Mac & Chz is a must! Platters are inclusive. Large seated bar is complemented by live music on selected weekends. Baker's is a landmark and a local favorite! Bravo! read more

I have dined here about a dozen times. The food is always great. Last night I had the bone-on pork shank. It was amazing. The meat fell off the bone and was very tender. Tonight I had roast beef. It was also great. The prime rib is another great menu item. I highly recommend it. The only downside is that the phone reception is not very good here. We don't like to eat out for Thanksgiving but this year we made an exception and went to a local favorite. Bakers had a special Thanksgiving menu and didn't disappoint. The service was super fast and friendly. Their wasn't a single server that had a negative attitude for working on a holiday. They were very friendly and customer focused. The meal was hot and portion size was perfect. We had a great Thanksgiving dinner and would recommend Bakers to anyone else not wanting to cook and cleanup Thanksgiving dinner or for really any time of the year. read more

Loved this place and can't wait to go back! Stopped in a few weeks ago and had a really nice lunch. For a place that's been around since 1958, I was surprised to see some unique items on the menu. We started with the pickle fries that came with an ancho ranch dressing - unlike other fried pickles I've encountered that are served cut into rounds or in whole spears, these were cut thin like French fries. I really enjoyed them and the dressing that came with them was nice but could have had a little more kick. Although there were quite a few things on the menu that caught my eye, the Southern girl in me wouldn't let me stray from the Fried Green Tomato BLT (on the seasonal menu) and I was not disappointed with my decision. Two thick pieces of fried green tomato replaced the usual slices of red tomato, and the sandwich had plenty of crispy bacon and lettuce on it. Perfect! It came with hand cut fries which pretty much blew me away - they were so homemade I felt like I was back in my Dad's kitchen down South. My husband had the Beef and Cheddar Melt which was also on the Fall Seasonal Menu. He seemed to enjoy it - there certainly wasn't any left. The décor in the place was quite nice and updated and the service was really good. Just like the old days. This place reminded me of my grandparents. It was my first visit to bakers and was pleasantly surprised. On a Saturday night at 7, party of 6, we were seated right away. menu had so many good choices, it was hard to pick out what I wanted. I ended up with breaded veal and brown gravy, only because I used to get it when I went to Sunday dinners with my grandparents and nowadays you rarely see it on a menu. They made it just like I remembered. And for dessert, Hello there, Smith Island coconut cake! Delicious! I should of got 2 pieces. Will definitely come back again. read more

Ordered cocktails and they were absolutely horrible. The servers were older ladies and seem to be burnt out and without any care for the customer. Server was fairly pleasant but walking like a zombie! The food here is OK but it's not something you're gonna remember for the rest of your life. My family and I went here on Mother's day 2017. Party of 9, called ahead to make sure we would be able to come without a reservation & was informed that we might have to sit separate (not a problem). First, the waitress took out appetizer order before drinks. Waited a good 5 mins for her to come back to take the drink order, then another 6-7 mins to bring the drinks. Second, the wait for the food was extremely long. Everyone ordered basic meals, one with steak. Third, she never cleared the table or checked back. I didn't like my entree, informed her, and she responded in a "oh well" manner. NEVER asked if I would like something else. When the bill came, my uneaten order was included and an extra drink that was included in one of the kid's meals. When I brought up not paying for a meal I didn't eat/like she blamed me for not liking it, claiming it was not the restaurant's fault. We spoke to the manager twice and spent over 2 hours here. It was a total waste of time and money. First and last time I will go here. Also left a review on their FB page and they further blamed me for my experience. Unbelievable! read more

We drive by here all the time, on our way to Schaefer's canal house. Always wonder if this place is good. Tonight, Schaefer's was too busy so we decided to give baker's a shot. So glad we did!!! We sat on the patio. Unfortunately, the loud motorcycles going past made it hard to enjoy, but that's not baker's fault. Our service was great, and the food was amazing! We had the grilled shrimp and scallops, the crab bisque, and the apple Gorgonzola salad. Every thing was perfect. Stopped by for cocktails and a late lunch. Enjoyed the outdoor patio seating. Food was very good and reasonably priced!! We got the southern hoe cake (bbq and coleslaw on a corn cake) and our server recommended the Key west pasta I think it was called. Both were very tasty the latter included many large shrimp and scallops. All of the staff we interacted with was super friendly from the person who answered the phone to the server to the person clearing and cleaning tables. The staff were the best part!! First we ordered the crab dip, it came and it was basically cheese dip with zero crab. No flavor and otherwise blah. Waitress was meh. She seemed like she had something better to do and was pretty much unpleasant. My wife asked for the prime rib, and she replied with it will come out how it comes out. Probably medium though. I ordered the shepards pie which when came out was covered in cheese and had no vegetables in it. Very bland and tasteless. It had a very thin layer of ground beef, and then white corn, cheese and mashed potatoes. That's no way I've ever had a shepards pie. All in all we won't be coming back. read more

We have been to this restaurant many times. It reminds us of a southern restaurant that serves comfort food. Every time we've gone we've had excellent service, except for the last time we went. We think it was a new server because she didn't know much about the specials or what things were on the menu. Our Nacho appetizer was good. As for the steak our server didn't know if it was pan seared or seasoned. Not that it is a big deal, but maybe they should try or observe how the food is made. A good steak doesn't need A1 and this one did. It lacked flavor but was cooked right and a decent Ribeye cut. My Fiance said her salad was very fresh and tasty. Her Filet Mignon was also lacking in the taste department. Note to the cook staff: Take note of how an Outback steak tastes and come up with a good seasoning pack. My husband ordered the crab dip and crab imperial. His app and my soup came out fairly fast. My soup was ok, way way too many shell pieces though. My husband's crap dip was 99% cheese 1% crab meat. Then it took over an hour of waiting to get our entrees. No apologies from the waitress who seemed like she hated her job and people. When my chicken finally came it was missing bbq sauce. I kindly told the waitress and she left with my chicken only to return with it SWIMMING in bbq sauce. The chicken itself was dry and the green beans were canned and so mushy it made me gag. "It's a diner for older people" The big sell for this place seems to be that it has been around for fifty-odd years, which would explain their clientele, who have all most likely eaten there since they were 15. The food, as noted by others, is basic diner fare, though the menu is minuscule by the standards of most diners. I got their beef liver with onions (yes, eww, I know, but I like it, normally), and the lack of a "how would you like that cooked" should have been an alarm bell. What I got had been cooked to the consistency of shoe leather, and was barely edible. The fries and cole slaw were good, however. My girlfriend had the turkey sandwich, which was, I quote, "the worst thing I've ever eaten". Maybe if I was 30 years older, this place would have some appeal, but for now, I'm avoiding it like the plague.
