Calamari - more onions and peppers than calamari
    Christine M.

Update: Since I wasn't feeling well on Tuesday, my partner brought home a crab cake for me to enjoy. This morning I dug into it and the first thing I bit into was a giant piece of hard plastic (not shell)! I proceeded to try and eat parts of the crab cake but every bite involved some form of shell. I wouldn't pay a cent for such a poorly made crab cake. Totally not enjoyable! I am so very disappointed in my family's recent visit here. I made reservations via Open Table and informed them that my in-laws are celebrating their 35th anniversary! I sadly got sick today so I couldn't join them. But the story of their celebratory meal made my heart drop. Service was lacking from the start. My mother-in-law said it went from "we're barely there" to "we're invisible" when a large group appeared. Appetizers came out and were a flop. Barely any crab in the crab dip and more peppers and onions in the calamari than calamari. Also my mother-in-law was delivered a "on the cold side of warm" seafood soup. The kicker of the whole night was when the server appeared with my father-in-law's rib eye. The server admitted that it sat under a heat lamp for 20 minutes. Obviously the piece of meat was overcooked and my super sweet in-laws sat in silence trying to get through their meal. The ribs were overly sauced and my mother-in-law was picking out shells whilst trying to eat her crab cake. The chef did kindly come by to wish them a happy anniversary but at that point there was nothing more to celebrate at Back Creek Grill. They told me "never again". So I'm sick at home hearing this and now I'm trying to find a way to make it up to them after my partner spent over $100 on an abysmal meal.

    Crab cake sandwich and fries

Back Creek review: In my opinion the shrimp cocktail could have had a bit less horseradish sauce in it. We got a glass of red wine and the serving size was generous. I got the crab cake sandwich. In my opinion, the crab cake was bland. It needed some old bay seasoning or something. The lettuce and tomato was pale, but it's winter so maybe that's to be expected. I like that it came with skinny fries, rather than the steak fries that they used to serve. My husband got the sirloin steak. He said it was good, but he's got a bit appetite and he wished the steak had been a bit larger of a portion. Service was good. We had a reservation and we got seated immediately.

Crab cake appetizer, no fillers. Yummm

This place is yummy. The cab cake was really good and the salads are great and 1/2 salad is even huge! Soup was ok. It had a lot of flavor put was puréed. I had the mushroom soup my hubby had seafood bisque which was heartier. I'll definitely come back. Waitress was sweet. Nice atmosphere

For a basic golf club restaurant this place is fantastic. The service is great the food is excellent. I had a crabcake sandwich that's one of the best I've had in a very very long time. I would definitely suggest it.

The service and portions are on a down hill slide. It's a shame, it was one of our all time favorites. Very sad.

I'm glad, because with it being slightly off the 'main drag' in Middletown, we might not have seen it otherwise. We arrived towards the end of the dinner rush hour, and fortunately were seated over by where a musician was playing. It was a busy night, and we were tired and hungry from a day at the faire. As it was busy, there were sportsball games going and the musician playing, shouting was required for discussion and we had some funny misunderstandings YOUR GRAPE IS ON THE MOON? WHAT? Oh, your gravy is a little cool! :) The musician was great, playing lots of 70s and 80s hits, and he seemed to enjoy us singing along and dancing. We are, after all, rennies. We're glad he was enjoying us as much as we were enjoying his music. We got drinks and menus quickly, and our server was attentive without being pushy. After a few minutes looking over the menu, she appeared and we ordered. I got the Stampede Burger, while one of my friends got the Prime Dip sandwich (AKA French Dip), and one got chicken fingers. All came in reasonable time and were quite good, hearty food. So, why the one star off? Dessert. Could we have a brownie sundae? Out of brownies. OK, how about chocolate cake? Out of that, too. Uh...red velvet? Out. Basically everything chocolate. Sigh. Yeah, it was busy but not insane. We ended up not getting dessert, and it was disappointing. Whoever's managing food orders and prep, please do better. Also, if it's not available, it would have been great for the server to say so up front, that way she didn't have to tell us no 3 times. Parking in a private lot, plentiful. We would go again, we just will plan on dessert elsewhere.

The bar was full and most of the tables in the dining area were full. We opted to sit towards the front that has a few booths. Also, the place is a "Seat Yourself" establishment. The customer service was amazing, as both of our waitresses were the sweetest. We ordered Lemon Pepper wings, Jerk Chicken Empanadas, and Tuscan Chicken. We also had these watermelon mocktails the bartender whipped up for us that were sooooo good. Although the food took a long time to come out, it was certainly worth the wait! The wings were cooked and seasoned to perfection. The Tuscan Chicken was good and well portioned also. However, the star of the show was the Jerk Chicken Empanadas! They must have marinated that chicken for at least 1-2 days because the jerk taste was so powerful. Tasted like it was made on the streets of Jamaica. The sauce that comes with it was the perfect pairing as well. The food was so good, I went back the next day with my husband so he could try. They also have DJ's on Fridays and I believe Karaoke on Thursdays. I will for sure be visiting again to try more from their menu.

The burger is cooked to order and the meat is fresh from the Dutch Market's butcher shop. Onion rings are perfect, batter fried and very juicy, taste like Vidalia onions. Some days when the Dutch market is open, they have breakfast all day and quite an extensive breakfast menu. But since I am a fan of a GOOD burger, I always order a hamburger. The restaurant has undergone many changes since the Dutch market opened almost 20 years ago. Now it's a sit-down place near the center back of the market. A chalkboard indicates specials and there is a glass display of desserts in case your gigantic half pound burger wasn't enough for you. Our zippy waitress took good care of us. We'll be back.

Service was great and the order of short-stack pancakes was perfectly cooked. Unlike a good number of restaurants in our area that seem to serve overly spongy or dry pancakes, these were cooked to perfection. P.S. very hard to walk out of the Market without buying other freshly made treats/food.

On one hand I want to try again for dinner but for the price, I'm not sure it's worth it. Pros: Amazing service - very attentive server(s); we had one in training/shadowing and she was just as good as our primary server, offering refills, clearing plates, overall greet banter Cocktails are fantastic - had the Minnie Ripperton and loved it - creamy yet refreshing and bright which is a tough combo to achieve Cons: Hidden entrance - after circling what looked like an abandoned building 2x we finally figured out the entrance was in the backy and down a set of stairs. I now understand the "speakeasy vibe" but the clutter in the front made the building look abandoned or under construction; not a great start to the experience for us Food service - the other couple we were dining with got their entrees about 10 minutes before ours and we were some of the first orders & diners of the day. Usually you might hold the whole table or refire some of the dishes so it all comes out at the same time. They finished theirs before we even got our to start, making it a strange eating experience Small print menu - with the low light of the speakeasy, the menu had the teeeeniest print I've ever seen making it very difficult to read the menu options. We also didn't realize that the menu changes/is seasonal (not called out on the website) so many of the items we had wanted to try were not an available option. I love a menu that changes but hope it's indicated on the website (aka: sample menu, subject to seasonal change) Hit-n-miss: Fried chicken Benedict- huge portions, amazing biscuits and perfectly poached (but unseasoned?) eggs. I don't know if the hollandaise soaked into the fried chicken or never existed at all - and that's the thing you want with a Benedict. If it existed, it never reached the biscuits because while they were good, but were completely dry Shrimp and grits - perfectly cooked, great consistency, but very under-seasoned Water - just an observation and maybe it's just the local tap water flavor but it tasted off or as off the soap hadn't been washed from the glasses Pro Tip: be aware of the automatic gratuity in some circumstances; if you don't know, check the website before your meal!
