This is a rare wing review. We probably should do more wing reviews…read more I somehow ended up in Maryland. That sounds like the beginning of a lot of trouble for a weary traveler. Fortunately, this saga has a happy ending: great wings and discounted beer. I think C3 Tavern BBQs their wings before finishing them off. They offer a house sauce and an Old Bay sauce, and if you ask nicely, they'll even do a 50/50 mix. The wings were meaty, flavorful, and cooked just right. The adventure didn't stop there. We took our wings across the street to Elk River Brewing, where they were trying to kick a keg and offering $3 draft specials. You know how I feel about beer and anything half-price. There was a concert in Elkton that night, so the brewery was filled with chatty, excited concertgoers. Between the wings, the beer, and the people-watching, it was a great afternoon filled with some of my favorite things.

We arrived towards the end of the dinner rush hour, and fortunately were seated over by where a musician was playing. It was a busy night, and we were tired and hungry from a day at the faire. As it was busy, there were sportsball games going and the musician playing, shouting was required for discussion and we had some funny misunderstandings YOUR GRAPE IS ON THE MOON? WHAT? Oh, your gravy is a little cool! :) The musician was great, playing lots of 70s and 80s hits, and he seemed to enjoy us singing along and dancing. We are, after all, rennies. We're glad he was enjoying us as much as we were enjoying his music. We got drinks and menus quickly, and our server was attentive without being pushy. After a few minutes looking over the menu, she appeared and we ordered. I got the Stampede Burger, while one of my friends got the Prime Dip sandwich (AKA French Dip), and one got chicken fingers. All came in reasonable time and were quite good, hearty food. So, why the one star off? Dessert. Could we have a brownie sundae? Out of brownies. OK, how about chocolate cake? Out of that, too. Uh...red velvet? Out. Basically everything chocolate. Sigh. Yeah, it was busy but not insane. We ended up not getting dessert, and it was disappointing. Whoever's managing food orders and prep, please do better. Also, if it's not available, it would have been great for the server to say so up front, that way she didn't have to tell us no 3 times. Parking in a private lot, plentiful. We would go again, we just will plan on dessert elsewhere.

I ordered the tuna poke bowl and it had great flavor. The common theme across everyone's order was that it was massive, everyone took food home. An equal mix of drumettes & wingettes, mildly seasoned, nicely roasted & charred in all the right places, topped with cooked onions and a big green pepper. The ranch dressing was definitely needed for a flavor boost. A rarely-offered, healthier alternative to traditional deep-fried wings. Penne Vodka with Chicken The small portion I tried was good, not great. The vodka sauce wasn't as tasty or rich as my benchmark version at Marcos Grill & Deli (Maui). There was a male bartender who was clearly caught up in himself and I could tell he felt like I was competition and he completely ignored me. Cool. No problem. Checked on us often, went to lengths to ensure she got our orders right, and was a delight to interact with...and her pen collection was impressive, both for me and the mechanical engineer in our party.
