steak and mashed potatoes

This was just about what I needed after a long day in Delaware in December. They have good amount of traffic coming in and the food was pretty good. I've seen one main girl taking orders from most tables (mine included) and she remains upbeat the whole time. Would recommend.

Carnegie Cheesecake - delicious & plenty for sharing!

I enjoyed two separate experiences here when I accompanied my husband on a recent business trip. I was thoroughly impressed with the food quality, cocktails and service as well as the live music on the patio (offered seasonally from April to October on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.). The Happy Hour menu offers delicious small plates and cocktails for very reasonable prices. I highly recommend the Rose Cosmo cocktail and the Crispy Brussels Sprouts. The regular dinner menu offers a wide array of delicious options -- I can vouch for the Antipasto Slate, Crispy Buffalo Cauliflower, Fried Chicken Curlys and the Market Garden Pizza. If you're a dessert person, the Carnegie Cheesecake is delicious and is perfect for two -- or maybe even three-- to share.

Dinner Sunday night at the bar great service food was mostly good however the fries with brisket were cold

Cowtipper Burger and Fries

This is a bar/restaurant within a Hilton. You should walk in with expectations adjusted as-so. The service is far and away the best aspect of this venue and, well...I would say that is befitting the setting. The bartender Joel is the most personable bartender I have come across, the manager came out personally to tell me they did not stock Egg Whites (that's INSANE, bro!), and in general the service will leave the most lasting impression on me for my stay in Delaware. The food is fairly uninspired, but that is...I don't know. It's expected I guess, but communicates to me more about how much Hilton is willing to invest. What you get with the cowtipper burger is a solid burger cooked the way you want it with some above-average strips of bacon, some awkwardly placed greens and a package wanting for a wetting agent. Something. I tried all the sauces on it and it didn't do the trick. The fries were fantastic, but again lacking for a proper sauce pairing outside of the house ketchup. The ketchup is, however, very good. Nice and thick and flavorful. The ranch and bleu cheese selections are worse than dollar store varieties. Overall...the place is a 4 star for foods. It pretends to be gourmet but falls flat of the expectation. Might even be a 3. The asking price of the burger is $20, which is pretty pricey even accounting for the location for what you get. But for the service, drinks, and the atmosphere...consider me a returning customer. At least until my stay is over.

Just another server fascinated by her phone and oblivious to her customers.

Please don't make the mistake of ordering steak. If the prices reflected the quality of the food, I would've given 2 or 3 stars. However, when you pay $45 for a steak, mashed potatoes and broccolini, that steak should be excellent. If you know the different grades of steak (select, choice, prime, etc.) you'll understand. Their steaks are of the same quality you'd expect at a cheap buffet or a struggling Chili's. More gristle than expected, and absolutely no marbling or flavor. This is an $8 steak from Walmart all day. Everything else was very basic and bland. The mashed potatoes tasted like they were made hours ago, which is fine if you mix in a little milk and/or butter every hour or so. The broccolini was simply steamed and salted. My estimate in the total cost of the plate is about $9 maximum. They sell it for $45. That's an INSANE markup. I was expecting a USDA Prime, aged New York strip for that price. I HONESTLY would've preferred the chicken wings at the Applebees across the street versus this meal. Not to mention, the server was on her phone the whole time and could care less about me. She was texting someone, as I could see the conversation/chat each time she walked by with her head down. This restaurant needs an overhaul ASAP or it'll become another mediocre spot very quickly. Ambiance: very sad and depressing for a Saturday night. It put me in a bad mood before I ever got my food. The staff seemed either preoccupied with their own personal situations, or miserable that they're at work. Everyone seemed indifferent or cranky. I regret dining here.

Service - people were very nice and friendly and the venue is cool and chic. Good- tomato soup was bland and didn't have much flavor. The grilled cheese sandwich was good. My friend had the veggie burger/sandwich and she thought it was great. Beignets were okay. Other friend at the salmon and thought it was really good.

This place was okay for a hotel restaurant. Service was slow as it seemed like there was only one waitress. It took us a while to order and to get the bill. The antipasto splate was a little sparse for the price of $22. My veggie bowl was okay, a little bland, but well presented. The duck ragout was very filling and a nice variety of flavors, but I thought a little salty. We didn't have enough room for desert this time. Beware of the price of the drinks on the kid's menu. $8 for a flavored lemonade. Yikes!

This is a very nice hotel bar. Even if it wasn't in my hotel, I would still go. Very classy and swanky. They also serve local beers on tap. The outside atmosphere is also very high end with fire pits overlooking a pond. High recommend.

Very solid for a Hotel option. Even seems to be a draw for locals. Makes this Hilton a worthwhile stay.

I learned later that this restaurant has been around since the early to mid 1900's. Plenty of parking in a large open lot. The place is very large and has one of the longest bars I've seen. The wood is very dark and you can see the chefs cooking over the hearth. They don't take reservations and won't see you until your entire party is there. One of the things I liked for our party of 10 was they had no problems with seating as they also have many large round tables. For mixed drinks, they make them pretty big and potent. For my martini, they sent back an extra glass. They also had great bleu cheese stuffed olives. We ordered onion rings (8 large to an order) and fried zucchini. The onion ring I had was pretty good. I didn't have the fried zucchini but heard it was also pretty good. Other than the light fare items, all dinners come with their salad bar which has both iceberg lettuce and Caesar Salad along with many fixings as well as cheeses and bread. I had the Baked Seafood Platter which came with scallops, shrimp, Clam Casino (without the shell), Maryland crab cake and a small lobster tail for $49.99. My wife had the baked chicken breast which she said was quite dry. The dining area is quite large and reminds me of the restaurants at a casino. Some in our group said it reminds them of Medieval Times due to the dark wood vibe. While I thought it was a bit pricey, I would still come back and try their signature steaks or prime rib.

It is a tiny building but they are doing it right! There is complimentary valet parking which was great because I have no idea where we would have parked. We were seated at exactly 4:30, and our server was friendly and fast. RJ and I ordered Downeast Peach Mango Cider which was refreshing and delicious. We started with crab and artichoke dip and beef and weck eggrolls, and our table ordered 2 fish and chips, the "Luxury" seafood pie, shepherd's pie, and the beef on weck sandwich. My weck included onions, mushrooms, swiss, and bacon with a side of au jus and horseradish. Yum, what a salty, savory, spicy combo. The roast beef was very tender and juicy. The fish and chips were all enjoyed, as were both pies. We did not make it to dessert but will try that again another time. We were in and out in about 1 hour without being rushed at all. We will definitely return to the Whip!

It's been many things in its history, but it's been Jessop's Tavern since 1996. (The family who owns the restaurant named it after a cooper named Abraham Jessop, who lived and worked in the building in 1724.) The restaurant has a great menu of food (including dishes inspired by the cuisines important to New Castle's early history: smorgasbord, a Dutch-inspired pot roast, etc.) and an incredible list of beers (200 Belgian beers, 20+ Belgian beers on draft, and more). We shared the Jessop's Tavern Crab Dip (served in a sourdough bread bowl) for the table, and I had the New Sweden Meatloaf for my entree (meatloaf with a vodka cream sauce and lingonberry preserves). I also had a couple of colonial ales - Washington's Porter by Yards Brewing Co. (I liked it so much, I had two). The service was good, and the ambiance is great: full of colonial charm. I'm sure there are other great places to eat in New Castle, but eating at Jessop's Tavern is a special place to grab a meal if you're spending the day exploring New Castle and learning about its history.
