Not going to lie..... I was a total skeptic walking in. My son is new to the area and this Pub is located in a strip mall and not much to look at from the outside. Inside is pretty much your local yocal bar set up. We were greeted immediately and service was great the whole time. Prices are reasonable. Anything crab there is amazing. Yep- I said amazing. Fresh and house made. Trying the crab dip is a must! Dry rub wings were terrific. Spicy and full of flavor! Dont let the outside fool you!

It's been many things in its history, but it's been Jessop's Tavern since 1996. (The family who owns the restaurant named it after a cooper named Abraham Jessop, who lived and worked in the building in 1724.) The restaurant has a great menu of food (including dishes inspired by the cuisines important to New Castle's early history: smorgasbord, a Dutch-inspired pot roast, etc.) and an incredible list of beers (200 Belgian beers, 20+ Belgian beers on draft, and more). We shared the Jessop's Tavern Crab Dip (served in a sourdough bread bowl) for the table, and I had the New Sweden Meatloaf for my entree (meatloaf with a vodka cream sauce and lingonberry preserves). I also had a couple of colonial ales - Washington's Porter by Yards Brewing Co. (I liked it so much, I had two). The service was good, and the ambiance is great: full of colonial charm. I'm sure there are other great places to eat in New Castle, but eating at Jessop's Tavern is a special place to grab a meal if you're spending the day exploring New Castle and learning about its history.

We have been going to The Whip for over 10 years now…read more THE #1 reason we keep going back is the staff. All of the staff make every meal a dining experience. The ambiance is great, especially in the warm weather, outside. The food is ALWAYS delicious, thanks to Dillon. Sarah and Tania are on top of their game behind the bar. I was excited for the food but unfortunately it was all pretty flavorless. I know British food is usually pretty bland but as someone who's lived in the UK, I know what to expect. Pretty disappointing. Weck Egg Roll- very crispy but not much flavor. Greasy. The creamy horseradish is good Bangers and mash- potatoes are good; fluffy and creamy. Sausages are good, savory and slightly sweet Shepards pie- weird flavor. The lamb changed the whole flavor. Sticky toffee pudding with ice cream- very good. Not overly sweet. The ice cream is a nice touch. Single stall gender neutral bdthrooms- kinda gross as a girl bc there's pee all over the floor by the toilet

I learned later that this restaurant has been around since the early to mid 1900's. Plenty of parking in a large open lot. The place is very large and has one of the longest bars I've seen. The wood is very dark and you can see the chefs cooking over the hearth. They don't take reservations and won't see you until your entire party is there. One of the things I liked for our party of 10 was they had no problems with seating as they also have many large round tables. For mixed drinks, they make them pretty big and potent. For my martini, they sent back an extra glass. They also had great bleu cheese stuffed olives. We ordered onion rings (8 large to an order) and fried zucchini. The onion ring I had was pretty good. I didn't have the fried zucchini but heard it was also pretty good. Other than the light fare items, all dinners come with their salad bar which has both iceberg lettuce and Caesar Salad along with many fixings as well as cheeses and bread. I had the Baked Seafood Platter which came with scallops, shrimp, Clam Casino (without the shell), Maryland crab cake and a small lobster tail for $49.99. My wife had the baked chicken breast which she said was quite dry. The dining area is quite large and reminds me of the restaurants at a casino. Some in our group said it reminds them of Medieval Times due to the dark wood vibe. While I thought it was a bit pricey, I would still come back and try their signature steaks or prime rib.

Looking through the glass panes in their door at the bottom of the steps leading to the back yard and C & D Canal, it appeared that the lights were off and that it wasn't open for business at 3:00 p.m. The door wasn't locked, so I opened it to step inside to try for a better look. It was then I saw a woman behind the bar who appeared to be setting up for business. She also saw me and asked if she could be of service. I asked if the place was open? She explained that it was, and she would be happy to make me a cocktail, however, they rarely had customers this time of day midweek, and that if I was hungry the restaurant above would certainly be happy to take care of me. The conversation continued briefly as she explained the two businesses had a common owner and shared a kitchen with a slightly different, but mainly overlapping menu. The large dining room next door was shared, although there were several tables in the shadows as well as a few barstools. The darkness seemed appropriate; like a cave where many things could be hidden from view and likely to instill a sense of secrecy and even conspiracy, for example, a perfect stop for the Underground Railroad or a speakeasy during Prohibition. Realizing I was taking up her time, and that she had better things to do than listen to a stranger's fantasies, I excused myself and exited the door I had just entered. She smiled and nodded, as she continued wiping the glassware in preparation for the night's guests.

The bar tender was very nice, very courteous . Then the issues began to emerge. Keep in mind what time it is and there are only 6-7 people in the bar. The men's bathroom was filthy. Like there was excrement on the wall, trash cans over flowing and toilet paper on the wall, stuck to it. All over the floor. The bar tender said something to the manager and the excuse was that it was the bait parade the night before. They have had over 12 hours to clean the bathroom. The nachos were absolutely gross. Poured cheese, 3 jalapeños, cold chicken. Two years ago it was a mix of cheese and smoked chicken, and delicious. I hope the owners read this and take note. Your saving money on cheap ingredients will lose clientele. A gross bathroom should have you shut down. Do better. You have a great location and a special little bar.
